EPISODE 91 - Sean Quirk, Head Coach of PLL's Cannons LC BEERS The traveling doesn't stop! Will reviews a beer from the cruise a few weeks ago, and he goes for another Hefeweizen. Floridian by Funky Budha is the choice this week. A smooth and refreshing wheat beer is filled with citrus notes and flavors. This week, Jake is in The Gateway to the West: St. Louis, Missouri. While the beer isn't as good as it is in New England, there were some bright spots in the craft scene in the STL area. Shortleaf Brewing Company (formerly Petrichor) was on the list of spots, and a 11.1% Imperial Samoa Stout took the cake for best beer on draft at the small micropub in the Winghaven neighborhood of O'Fallon. BUSINESS Air New Zealand will have bragging rights to the longest commercial flight in the world later this year when they launch a 17-hour haul from Auckland to New York City. To keep travelers from going stir-crazy they've come out with a model that would allow their passengers to rent bunk beds during their flights. The catch? Not only does it come at an additional cost to your regular seat, but you get kicked out after only 4 hours! How will this play with long-haul travelers? In the social media world, Snapchat Plus is hitting the market this summer. For $4 per month, you can get access to features like seeing who re-watched your story and pinning your top friends as a BFF. Is this a flop or a good idea? BALLS, presented by Manscaped (33:14) Sean Quirk led the Boston Cannons to the final Major League Lacrosse Championship in 2020, and earned the franchise a bid to the Premier Lacrosse League the next year. But, like many in the sport of lacrosse, his journey began far before he dreamed of calling the shots on the sidelines for the greatest players in the world. Coach Quirk joins the show to discuss his decorated career as an All-American goalie, his D3-record coaching stint at Endicott, and the lessons he's learned along the way. We also discuss coaching Paul Rabil & Lyle Thompson, how far the PLL can go, and lacrosse's potential to crack America's major sports. We finish with Rapid Fire - the Yankees, Kyrie Irving, and the Colorado Avalanche lifting Lord Stanley are all on the hot stove. We're proud to present Manscaped as our latest partner! And what people miss is that if you play collegiate athletics at any level, you're part of the top 3% of the world's athletes.00:11:48 My family wanted me to get back into it. My kids wanted to get back into it because they were already missing dad, the coach.00:12:28 I felt that my skillset matched the needs of coaching professional lacrosse.00:14:11 But I knew jumping into this at 24 years old, I had a lot to learn and I was.00:14:39 I was extremely open to learning and having conversations. And I think such a big part of communication is not always speaking, but listening.00:15:12 Worrying about the team dynamics, how to treat young men, how to gain the respect, how to gain their trust, how to trust them, how to respect them.00:16:23 I think they played harder for us as a coaching staff because we respected them and they respected us. We trusted them and they trusted us. 00:17:40 You have to fail to become successful…Whereas if you're hard-headed and you're saying, I'm just going to do it my way and fine I fail, you're going to continue to fail and you'll be on the outside looking in.00:19:18 You're looking at your failures as a growth opportunity rather than some sort of Scarlet letter that you did something wrong. 00:20:27 Building culture and then sustaining a positive culture is consistency. And how do you do that? It's all a process. It's a journey.00:21:01 Giving a lot of autonomy back to your players, your student athletes, your coaches.00:21:25 I personally think having one or two, maybe three captains is the right thing. And then you put almost sub captains below them. Teams have assistant captains.00:24:17 Non-negotiables no palms up. How many times do you see athletes given palms up to their teammates when they make a mistake or an official on a bad call, or a coach on a decision?00:26:49 As a professional coach, it's really communicating and having that relationship in that trust with those players.00:28:40 I would go out and just schedule meetings with coaches to spend 15, 20 minutes a half hour in their office before their practice. Talk a little bit of philosophy and then observe practice.00:29:04 Maybe more often than not, I learned how to not do things by watching some of those coaches. And I said, you know what, that's not for me how the coach X did things with his team, but I liked coach Y how he or she did things. I could see myself implementing that into my personality on how I see things to be.00:29:58 My first and only objective with that young man or young woman is to love this game is to love this sport, to build their confidence.00:31:42 It all comes back to the human being element of them, feeling good about themselves, them growing as a person.00:33:56 My approach changed the most once I had my own kids.00:37:00 I would sugar coat, why they weren't making the team to make them feel good about why they weren't making the team.00:37:42 Coach, just shoot me straight. Yeah. Tell me why I didn't make the team.00:38:26 We're always continually learning continually listening.00:41:10 I think I changed and gained much more appreciation for what they got out of our program during their four years. 00:43:45 Seeing what these young people are doing after they play for you for four years and who they become in their careers like I said, then seeing them as fathers, like that's the greatest gift any of us could have is getting married and having a child, and to see them and how they interact with their families is what I love most.00:49:19 Try to be successful, but that definition of successful, isn't always the same everywhere, but putting the student athlete first, creating standards and culture and growth opportunities for them, and worrying about the process of how you get there is what's they're going to take with them.
