As Juliet asks, "what's in a name?" in that Shakespeare play every 9th grader reads, I too ask the put the same question to today's guest, Dr. Caio Miguel. Welcome to Session 287 of the Behavioral Observations Podcast! Literary allusions aside, in this episode, Caio walks us through the concept of Bidirectional Naming, and its implications for research and practice. In this conversation, we use his 2016 paper, Common and Intraverbal Bidirectional Naming, from the Analysis of Verbal Behavior, as a springboard for this discussion. One of the things that I took away from this conversation is to be more careful using terms like tacting, naming, and labeling interchangeably. In this podcast, you'll learn why these distinctions are important. We also talk about why terms like receptive and expressive labeling aren't conceptually systematic, and should be avoided in the Behavior Analytic literature. If that sounds like a hot take to you, please tune in to hear the rationale. Caio is also presenting at this year's Verbal Behavior Conference, which is taking place March 27-28, 2025, both in Austin, TX, as well as virtually through BehaviorLive. If you like to nerd out on all things verbal behavior, this is your event. And during our conversation, Caio provides a preview of what he plans to talk about at the VBC. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here. The M's new wing triples its exhibit space in downtown St. Paul Architectural historian Marjorie Pearson of St. Paul wants people to know that the new, expanded wing of the Minnesota Museum of Art, commonly known as the M, is now open in the historic arcade of the Endicott building in downtown St. Paul. The major renovation triples the available exhibit space for Minnesota's oldest art museum. The exhibit in the new wing, entitled “Here, Now,” features 150 works from the M's permanent collection, ranging across centuries and styles. The museum is open Thursdays through Sundays and admission is free. When you visit, Marjorie recommends you take time to admire the architecture in addition to the art.Marjorie says: This is a premier office building that was designed by Cass Gilbert in the early 1890s and the arcade with its wonderful arch stained-glass ceiling, beautifully restored by Stonehouse Stained Glass Studio in Avon, Minn., really enhances the whole gallery space.  The Endicott building was constructed around the historic Pioneer building … the two buildings were combined. The galleries now are in the historic arcade, which was a shopping arcade for people in the offices downtown — a precursor to a shopping mall.[Note: Cass Gilbert (1859-1934) was a prominent architect who lived and worked in Minnesota for portions of his life; he designed many important buildings, including the Minnesota State Capitol and the U.S. Supreme Court Building.] — Marjorie PearsonArtist created, student-curated Black joy Billy Nduwimana Siyomvo got an early view of the exhibit “Layers of Joy,” which he called “mind-blowing.” The exhibit features five Minneapolis artists — Leslie Barlow, Alexandra Beaumont, Eyenga Bokamba, Cameron Patricia Downey and seangarrison — whose selected works celebrate Black joy and identity. Billy loved the work, and he recommends taking your time to take it in from all angles. He was also struck by the exhibit's backstory: the show was curated by University of Minnesota students enrolled in ARTH 3940: Black Art in Minneapolis, taught by Dr. Daniel M. Greenberg and Dr. Dwight K. Lewis, Jr. Billy describes the show: When you walk in, the first thing that embraces you is colors —different textures, colors, different stories. Each art piece I felt like was made with love. What I love about this [exhibit] is that this class is basically giving these artists a platform. I don't think it's every day that you hear about curating art; people need to understand that, yes, these artists are very important, but without the right curated spaces, their art is not put on a platform that it deserves to be on. — Billy Nduwimana SiyomvoWhere design meets play Rebecca Montpetit of Rochester is a lifelong fan of the Rochester Art Center, and she's already making plans to go back again with her family to see Mini Golf and Chairs. The interactive exhibit consists of 20 chairs from the private college of an Owatonna family, which artist then used as inspiration to create five mini golf holes. You can't sit on the chairs, but you can play the golf holes. Clubs of all sizes, including adaptive clubs, are part of the exhibit, and there is a par for each hole. The exhibit runs through May 4, 2025. Rebecca describes what it was like to visit the exhibit with her kids, aged 8 and 10: The beginning of the exhibit leads you through this hall of chairs. And it was a really fascinating discussion with our kids to talk about. We said, all of these have the same purpose: to sit! But look at all of the materials and ways that you can create ways to sit. They're everything from corrugated cardboard to molded plastic to, a kind of a shag material. So we had all sorts of different ways to explore, ways to sit. So it gave the artist creative license as well to really be inspired by the materials or the shape or even the thought process as they created the mini golf elements. — Rebecca Montpetit

Why is Endicott playing in the first round? Why is Ursinus? Why does Centre get a bye? Why does Salisbury have to face a 6 or 7 seed in its first game instead of a 9 or 10? When the teams are already identified and all boiled down to a number value by a mathematical equation, the bracket is all we can talk about, and go figure, sometimes decisions are still being made by geography. Sometimes the NPI ranking of a team doesn't match up with what the general Division III fandom thinks, or what our voters think. And it doesn't seem like we would learn anything from talking to the NCAA committee chair, so we decided instead to interview the algorithm. Or in this case, we talked to Logan Hansen about who the last teams in and first teams out were, how John Carroll and Mary Hardin-Baylor made their big jumps up the NPI ranking, and exactly how much of an impact the UW-River Falls win over UW-Oshkosh on Saturday had -- it's more than you probably think. And it's way more insightful than most committee chair conversations, so we hope you agree. Plus, we chat with Linfield coach Joe Smith for Fast Five, about west coast D-III football, his team's two-quarterback system, and the Wildcats finally being able to put last season's loss to Whitworth in Week 11 behind them. And we take a number of your questions in our mailbag segment. The D3football.com

Joined by Cody Endicott, a certified personal trainer and owner of Endless Evolution Fitness, this discussion highlights how blood work can be used not just for diagnosing illness, but as a proactive tool for optimizing wellness. Cody shares his expertise on utilizing blood tests to create personalized, holistic health strategies that help clients achieve their fitness goals, improve overall well-being, and reduce dependence on medication. About the Guest: Cody Endicott is a certified personal trainer with degrees in Exercise Science and Nutrition & Food Science. As the founder of Endless Evolution Fitness, Cody specializes in functional health and uses blood work to pinpoint underlying issues that may hinder wellness goals. His unique approach combines fitness with a deep understanding of internal health, allowing his clients to achieve long-term, sustainable results by addressing root causes instead of relying solely on medications. Key Takeaways: Blood Work as a Blueprint: Blood work offers personalized insights into an individual's internal health, serving as a 'blueprint' to identify abnormalities and inform health strategies. Cortisol and Stress: Elevated cortisol levels due to constant stress can lead to adrenal fatigue and weight loss resistance. Blood work helps identify these issues early and guides corrective actions. Holistic Approach: Cody emphasizes a holistic approach to health, where understanding blood work allows for personalized wellness plans that focus on nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle adjustments rather than medication alone. Customization is Key: Not everyone responds the same way to fitness and nutrition plans. Cody explains how blood work allows him to tailor health strategies to each client's specific needs. Reducing Medication Dependence: By addressing root causes through lifestyle and dietary changes, individuals can often reduce or eliminate the need for medication. Blood work helps uncover these underlying issues and provides a pathway to long-term health.

Dive into the life of Mya Kermelowicz, a remarkable individual whose journey is as inspiring as it is enlightening. Mya, an Endicott alum with a Bachelor's in Psychology and Creative Arts Therapy and a Master's in Business Administration, a warrior in her own right. Her work as a Title IX Advocate, Relationship Coach, Public Speaker, and founder of MK Prevention Services has made significant strides in the area of dating violence and sexual assault prevention in high schools and colleges. Mya's story begins in her freshman year of high school, where she found herself entangled in a toxic relationship with a senior. This relationship, unbeknownst to her at the time, set the tone for what was to come. It was only during a school play, which mirrored her own experiences, that she realized the abusive nature of her relationship. This awakening was a pivotal moment in Mya's life, leading her down a path of self-realization and empowerment. Her journey, however, was not without its challenges. Mya faced a series of toxic relationships, a pattern she refers to as 'toxic cycling'. This cycle was a difficult one to break, but Mya's resilience and determination saw her through. She understood the importance of self-love and confidence, recognizing that real change starts from within. Mya's insights into relationships are profound. She emphasizes the importance of an equal power dynamic and the dangers of manipulation and gaslighting. Her experiences taught her that verbal and sexual abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse. These revelations have not only transformed her life but have also fueled her passion to educate others about these critical issues. Now, as an advocate and educator, Mya is dedicated to opening hearts and minds. She stresses the importance of understanding rights and laws, and the support systems available in schools. Through MK Prevention Services, she has created a platform to educate and empower, reaching out to those who might be struggling in silence. Mya's message is clear and powerful: You are worthy of love and respect. She encourages everyone to use their voice to create change and ensure safety for themselves and others. So, if you're ready to dive deeper into Mya's incredible journey and her work, hit play now and let her story inspire and guide you.   GUEST LINKS:   Email: https://www.mkpreventionservices.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mk.preventionservices/  Linktree: https://linktr.ee/myakermelewicz  Podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dearmk    LINKS: malarchuk.com/book  malarchuk.com  www.thecompassionateconnection.com www.warriorsunmasked.com  Join Chuck's Text Community: 251-418-7966 Follow us on Instagram Like us on Facebook Subscribe To Our YouTube My Community Contact   Episode Minute By Minute: 00:00 Introduction to Conversation With Mya Kermelewicz 02:55 Beginning of the Interview and Topic Introduction 03:52 Mya's Personal Journey and Experience with Toxic Relationships 07:21 Understanding the Nature of Toxic Relationships 10:04 The Impact of Toxic Relationships and the Process of Realization 11:10 The Cycle of Toxic Relationships and the Struggle to Break Free 19:26 The Importance of Self-Work and Personal Growth 21:26 The Role of Self-Care and Gratitude in Healing 22:28 The Impact of Meditation and Mindfulness 27:54 The Importance of Feeling Worthy and Valuing Self 29:28 Starting the Journey of Relationship Coaching 30:05 The Power of Sharing Personal Stories 31:25 The Impact of Speaking at Schools 32:58 Realizing the Calling and Starting a Business 34:08 The Emotional Impact of Speaking to Students 36:15 The Importance of Understanding Rights and Laws 37:43 The Struggle of Getting People to Talk About Abuse 40:37 Reflecting on Past Toxic Relationships 45:33 The Importance of Self-Care and Setting Boundaries 46:23 Connecting with Mya and Her Work 48:36 The Power of Vulnerability

Blacktail Hunting in the Pacific Northwest with Nathan Endicott Show Notes:   Nate Endicott and I sit down for a chat about blacktail hunting in the Pacific Northwest. He's also hunted mule deer in Arizona a couple of times. We talk about the rapid changes to hunting in Arizona if you're out of state, especially when it comes to getting a tag. Even though I advocated for it, it's not the best system, and it has an impact on my guiding business. We also chat about how things go up north in Oregon, where Nate is.   I hunted in Washington last year during the blacktail rut, and Nate and I talk about late season deer hunting in Oregon. Washington and Oregon are similar, but there's less opportunity in Washington. You could also get an all season tag every other year, so it all depends. If you're a non-resident, it's more expensive. Nate walks through the tag process for deer hunting, and we get into when the peak of the rut is for blacktail.   Nate and I talk about deer behavior on the west coast and how it's different and similar to the east. In some areas, there's a lot of private ground, and Nate maps out the geography and where the deer population hangs out. We talk about how to use deer behavior to your benefit, how our experience over the years has made us better hunters, and why hunters need to band together. We wrap up by chatting about Nate's favorite habitat to score blacktail bucks, the three factors that contribute to his success, and Nate's favorite blacktail deer hunting story.   What's Inside:   What the tag process for deer hunting is like in Washington and Oregon.
