The latest AMI Audio podcast episode of “Outdoors with Lawrence Gunther” starts with news about migrating birds and their attraction to cities. Blind or sighted, you choose.
Matthew Layton and Sam Rickard present Studio 1 - Vision Australia Radio's weekly look at life from a low vision and blind point of view. This week… A rather remarkable gentleman by the name of Mike May. Mike lost his sight as a child, but in 2000, at the age of 46, following multiple procedures involving cornea transplants and pioneering stem cell therapy, Mike regained some sight in one of his eyes. That's remarkable in and of itself, but Mike is also an accessible technology pioneer. He is the founder of The Sendero Group - who were the first company to make the power of GPS accessible to people with little or no vision - and is now Chief Evangelist at GoodMaps. He also happens to be the fastest blind man on two skis - and that's official! -- CALL or TEXT: 04 500 78834 EMAIL: studio1@visionaustralia.org TWITTER: http://twitter.com/varadionetwork and http://twitter.com/whingeingpom -- [PHOTO CAPTION: Studio 1 guest Mike May, looking very dapper in a well-cut suit, sitting behind his desk, smiling in a very welcoming manner.] -- GUESTS AND RESOURCES GoodMaps - https://www.goodmaps.com/ Tammey Candeloro - Counselling 4 You WA - 0423 93 15 74 - www.tammey.com.au -- Vision Australia gratefully acknowledges the support of the Community Broadcasting Foundation for Studio 1. Mike’s start-up ventures have included developing the world’s first and only Laser Turntable, inventing a portable heating cushion for sports and medical applications, and starting 2 companies in adaptive technology including Sendero Group in 1999, which released the first-ever accessible GPS for the blind. Currently, he is Chief Evangelist for Good Maps, Inc., a pedestrian navigation company with an emphasis on accessible navigation for people who are blind or visually impaired. Mike also holds the record for downhill skiing by a person who is completely blind -racing at 65 mph-and is the subject of the best-selling book Crashing Through by, Robert Kurson.Huge thanks to Arrow Electronics for sponsoring this episode - the first in a series highlighting folks who are pioneering and innovating in the field of inclusive technology.Resources:For more information about Mike May, go to http://www.GoodMaps.com or http://www.CrashingThrough.com
