Chinatown (1974) is a neo-noir crime thriller, directed by Roman Polanski from a screenplay by Robert Towne. Based loosely on the Owens Valley water wars in Los Angeles from the early twentieth century, the film follows private investigator J.J. (“Jake”) Gittes (Jack Nicholson) as he pursues a series of leads that take him into the dark underbelly of power and corruption in 1930s Los Angeles. A woman claiming to be "Evelyn Mulwray” initially hires Gittes to follow her husband Hollis, whom she suspects of infidelity. Gittes discovers that Noah Cross (John Huston), the father of the real Evelyn Mulwray (Faye Dunaway), had Hollis, his former business partner and head of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, killed. Hollis had learned of Cross's plan to force famers in the Northwest valley to sell their land by cutting off their irrigating water and purchasing it through dummy syndicates on the cheap with the aim of developing the land into valuable Los Angeles real estate. Gittes also learns that the young woman he falsely suspected Hollis of having an affair with is Evelyn's sister and daughter—the product of Evelyn's rape by Cross when she was fifteen. While Gittes ultimately unravels the mystery, he is unable to stop the powerful Cross from achieving his goals or prevent the tragic fate that awaits Evelyn. A man using the name “William L. Toomey” was found dead on December 4, 1982, in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boise, Idaho. This man has never been identified and it's believed that the name he used  “William L. Toomey” was not his real name. An autopsy later revealed that the man had died from ingesting a lethal dose of cyanide via a cyanide capsule. The man had removed all items of personal identification, before committing suicide. At the time of his death, the man was between thirty-five and forty-five years old, weighed 175 pounds, and was 6'0” tall. He had gray eyes with a hint of brown. He seemed to be “well-groomed”; he was clean-shaven, his hair was styled, and his fingernails were clean. The man was extremely tanned, had sun-bleached, wavy blond hair, and was dressed in Western-style clothing. Because of this, authorities believe he may have been from somewhere in the southwestern part of the United States, perhaps California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas. There was some speculation that the man was connected to the infamous Tylenol murders case, which took place two months before the man's death as well as the murders of 2 priests from southwestern part of the United States. The man's real identity remains a mystery, however the case is still under investigation and LE are trying to identify this man.Contact us at: weeknightmysteries@gmail.comInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/weeknightmysteriesTikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@weeknightmysteries

Through text and lavish images, this work explores the saguaro's growth into a western icon from the early days of the American railroad to the years bracketing World War II, when Sun Belt boosterism hit its zenith and proponents of tourism succeed in moving the saguaro to the center of the promotional frame. An essential—and monumental—member of the Sonoran Desert ecosystem, the saguaro cactus has become the quintessential icon of the American West. In the Arms of Saguaros: Iconography of the Giant Cactus (U Arizona Press, 2023) shows how, from the botanical explorers of the nineteenth century to the tourism boosters in our own time, saguaros and their images have fulfilled attention-getting needs and expectations. Through text and lavish images, this work explores the saguaro's growth into a western icon from the early days of the American railroad to the years bracketing World War II, when Sun Belt boosterism hit its zenith and proponents of tourism succeed in moving the saguaro to the center of the promotional frame. This book explores how the growth of tourism brought the saguaro to ever-larger audiences through the proliferation of western-themed imagery on the American roadside.  This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host and aBlogtoWatch Founder Ariel Adams is joined by serial watch industry entrepreneur Guillaume Laidet. Guillaume is currently the Co "Re"Founder and Chief Brand Officer of Nivada Grenchen, the Co-Founder of Argon Paris, and Co Owner and CEO of Excelsior Park amongst other companies and titles. Ariel and Guillaume start the show by discussing his newest brand and venture, Argon watches, and how his kickstarter campaigns can function as a major tool for brand building. They talk about the risk it may put on the consumer when certain companies can't deliver, but how it also makes it possible to cut out major costs in the manufacturing and delivering of a product directly to consumers. Guillaume dives into his life background and his incredibly dynamic career that has spanned over many companies such as William L, Zenith, and L'Oreal. Ariel asks Guillaume about his philosophy on pricing when it comes to fair prices all year without the need for discounts and built in margins that increase the everyday price of watches that shouldn't cost what they do. They talk about how that pricing philosophy has helped build a market of smaller independent brands who are doing the same practice and finding success doing so. All due to the quality of the watches they put out at the reasonable and fair price point that they do. Ariel and Guillaume also talk about how the kickstarter campaigns and all of Guillaume's practices that he does have led to a marriage of manufacturing and brand building that we do not typically see in watch e-commerce today. Resources to study the history of Pennsylvania German material texts exist in institutions all around the nation and world, and it behooves scholars to look beyond the best-known repositories in southeastern Pennsylvania in order to discover underutilized and undiscovered resources. It also is in historians' best interest to make use of examples of Pennsylvania German calligraphy and penmanship that may not rank as the most beautiful examples of the art form but push us to understand Frakturschrift calligraphy in a broader social-historical context. The Holstein family account and penmanship practice book at the William L. Clements Library of the University of Michigan offers a wonderful example of both of these points. Created by several generations of a rural Pennsylvania German family, this everyday manuscript provides insight into how children learned penmanship, manuscript illumination, and lessons in Protestant piety. In this special episode of Cloister Talk, we take a virtual trip to the Clements Library in Michigan to study the complex, fascinating, and analytically rich Holstein manuscript. The episode takes a deep dive into the materiality of the manuscript before considering the history of the Holstein family and drawing comparisons with other account books and penmanship exercise books held by the Winterthur Library in Delaware. The episode also includes reflections on lessons learned for Pennsylvania German studies. You may view the Holstein manuscript here, via the Clements Library's digital repository: https://quod.lib.umich.edu/h/holsteinfam/.

Years later, investigators explore a theory that Toomey's suicide might be connected to the murders of two Catholic priests, Father Patrick Ryan and Father Benjamin Carrier. To further complicate matters, a suspect was arrested for Father Ryan's murder only weeks before Toomey's death, even though the evidence strongly suggested he was innocent of the crime. Who was the mysterious “William L. Toomey” and what compelled him to take his own life? 404.

Modern Austria: empire and republic, 1815-1986. Cambridge: Cambridge Univ. PressRockberger, Nicolaus (1996). Even keeled and turned so his back faces you and the rest of the Eye's denizens lined up at the stall hoping for a bowl of something with an ounce of flavor, Emphis tosses unknowable ingredients high into the air above the flames and lets them tumble back into the wok with a magnificent sizzle. He pours the wok's contents out into a container and hands it to you, barely making eye contact before averting his gaze to meet that of the next customer to wordlessly indicate there's another serving coming right up. You get nothing more. Stepping away from the stall and opening the lid to let the overwhelming aroma of mysterious spices rip through your senses, you glance back at Emphis who has somehow already served four more customers in the interim. "Fun guy," you think to yourself and take a bite of the best meal you'll have all week.Discussed: Citizen Sleeper, Rogue Legacy 2, Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure, Retro Game Challenge, Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2, Dragon Quest V, Dragon Quest IV, Yoshi's Island DS---Find us everywhere: https://intothecast.onlineJoin the Discord: https://theworstgarbage.onlineFollow Stephen Hilger: https://twitter.com/StephenHilgerFollow Brendon Bigley: https://twitter.com/brendonbigley---Produced by AJ Fillari: https://twitter.com/ajfillariSeason 4 Cover Art by Scout Wilkinson: https://scoutwilkinson.myportfolio.com/---Join the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/intothecastThanks to all of our amazing patrons! | Kyle B | Nick L | WallyWoo | Cody D | Alex Z | Miles L | Mark E | Sid T | Jeffrey A | Anthony L | Trevor S | Sebastian G | Jacob M | sourorrin | Andrew C | X L | fingerbelly | CJ M | Miles D | Dominic G | Macy P | Callie BD | Jesse Y | Callan C | Zachary M | Thomas B | Joseph D | JC G | Nigel B | Ryan R | Sasha M | Jake L | Cody G | Derek N | peppc | Sam B | Jesse W | Coco N | Ronan B | Julia B | Douglas W | Kaelan T | Honshew | Dan | Gregory | Austin K | Tony D | Mike T | no name | Espen S | Shaun K | Michael C | Maarten G | Paige A | Katie | The Family Computers | Pearson B | Anna E | Codes | Jim VDH | Matt B | Andy M P | Wesley | Logan W | Laslie C | Charlie D | Erik B | Heath S | Marc H | Connor S | Adam V | Ronin W | William W III | Jonathan B | Will N | Mike | Brandon T | Daniel R | Adam L | David H H | Nick V | Mike K | Eric A-F | Judith S | Alejandro M | Susannah G | Mush | Al F | Mick W | Keith S | Markus W | AggressiveToast | Liam R | Pippin N | Matt M | Minh N | jorgamund | Butterfly Bandit | Naman B | Gabe O | Josh H | Bellspr00ut | Kite | Doug | Lasse B | Retromation | John Thomas F | Juanda | Adam L | Geocracy | George L | b0rt | Elen R | David D | Casey D-VA | Zach B | Alex L | Connor C | Jeff N | Baker S | Daniel M | Adam S | Sergio L | Kyle S | ninjadeathdog | Sous Chef Russell | Greg | Zachary G | Adnan S | Celia S | Chris P | Lukerfuffle | David O | Kelly | Rory B | Adam V | JTH | David M | Varsha S | Stumpy J | Verlinp | Matthew W | Andy S | evie  | A42PoundMoose | Sam T | Maxwell H | Robert M | Jonah K | Morgan M | Robb S | Owen P | Samuel H | Michael W | Andrew S | Tom | Mitchell J | Justin M | Will L | InterJustin | Evan H | Sam B | Robert O | Xavier K | Charlie E | Theresa N | Jamal M | Korey | Thomas W | Monte J | Liam M | Nick S | Jellums | Peter R | Jennifer S | Will H | Derek H | Brian D | Augusto D | Ethan K | Michael O | Brandon B | Peter H | Matt S | Albatross Soup | Noah H G | Christiaan S | Nick P | Ryan O | CosmicBluesMinis | Derek N | Megan T | Josiah R | Austin B | Kaija R | Khaleel G | Rowan | Sam S | Hunter F | Togame1 | JT | John H | Makenzie B | James O | SalivationArmy | Bishop_Tacos | Alex L | Dakota K | Ryan H | Blake M | Wanda S. | Scott T | Rachel L | Ian B | Onatah | Samuel H | Myles H | Wiley K | Moonstone5tella | garretsr  | Eric D | Latte709 | Phillip F | Charles S | The WolfeKnight | Patrick M | Michael N | Brigitte L | Lee R | James Y | Reuben J | John C | Anisa | Maurice  | Nick M | Trey L | Sam N | Madeleine  | Randal S | Matthew M | leigha | Michael N | Connor  | Garrett P | Justin W | Brendan K | Michaela  | Adam G | Sebastian P | Júlía H | Marc | Christopher S | Alanna O | Scott R | Jackson F | Megan B | Erika Y | Christopher D | Matt D | Sebastian E | Liam B | Meredith | wreck | Daniel C | Coop | Brian M | Richie | Alexander M | Andrew K | Roc B | Alex G | Dan O | Laura W | Roberto S | Leo C | Wishbone | saddlebread | Roberge | Ian A | Max M | Michael V | Kyle R | Selina A | Noah O | Rich E | Michael G | Arcturus | Raihan S | Matthew M | Rowan S | Chris R | leastest | Kyle L | Anthony G | Adam | The Binding of Andrew | Hepahe | Jake L | Conor P | Cory F | Luke L | Matt C | Cian | John J P | GJ C | Mr Mallard | Sarah G | Vanessa J | Jack F | Kelsey J | Chase A | Elyse H | Anna | Nick Q | Tom H | Wes K | Erica S | Maria D | Chris M | RB | Jared B | Toots M | Aaron D | David C | Karen H | Walter N B | Kristin T | Joseph P | Tom W | Chad W | Chy J-B | Michaela W | Ryan W | Adam F | Scott H | Denys T | Lauren H | Andrew M | Alexander St. P | Griffin F | Ben G | killian | Therese K | Matthew V | Nick C | Zach A | SpagooliDude | Andrew L | Justin H | Alyssa R | jgprinters  | Rob K | Justin C | Jess B | Matt H | bsushi | sebsab  | Lilie G | Ian L | Chris | Pat M | markh | Craig | Matt F | Sebastian V N | Joeri B | Maryanne D | SkinTightAlloy  | Dennis C | Eliot O B | Shelly B | William L | Brendon T | Robert S | Murray  | Trevor B | salutepeezy  | Andrew D | David P | Alex M | Catherine O | Josh G | noname  | Jason  | Bede R | Mark O | Jeff C | Brett S | Inês G. | Kim M | Kamrin H | Minh T | Andrew D | Marxelle  | Akira  | Christopher B | Melimuffinpie  | bolt  | Scout W | Philip N★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Regrettably, Stephen and Brendon spend this extremely truncated episode discussing a solitary game due to a lack of time or planning. Even more regrettably, Stephen and Brendon spend their time after recording this extremely truncated episode wondering about what could have been had they prepared at a level matching their own individual and joint expectations regarding what goes into creating a quality podcast episode.Discussed: The end is never the end is never the end is never the end is never the end is never the end is Just because I say the word "objection" at a reasonable volume doesn't mean I don't mean it.Discussed: Phoenix Wright: The Ace Attorney Trilogy, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Golden Sun, Golden Sun: The Lost Age, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn---Find us everywhere: https://intothecast.onlineJoin the Discord: https://theworstgarbage.onlineFollow Stephen Hilger: https://twitter.com/StephenHilgerFollow Brendon Bigley: https://twitter.com/brendonbigley---Produced by AJ Fillari: https://twitter.com/ajfillariSeason 4 Cover Art by Scout Wilkinson: https://scoutwilkinson.myportfolio.com/---Join the Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/intothecastThanks to all of our amazing patrons! | Kyle B | Nick L | WallyWoo | Cody D | Alex Z | Miles L | Mark E | Sid T | Jeffrey A | Anthony L | Trevor S | Sebastian G | Jacob M | sourorrin | Andrew C | X L | fingerbelly | CJ M | Miles D | Dominic G | Macy P | Callie BD | Jesse Y | Callan C | Zachary M | Thomas B | Joseph D | JC G | Nigel B | Ryan R | Sasha M | Jake L | Cody G | Derek N | peppc | Sam B | Jesse W | Coco N | Ronan B | Julia B | Douglas W | Kaelan T | Honshew | Dan | Gregory | Austin K | Tony D | Mike T | no name | Espen S | Shaun K | Michael C | Maarten G | Paige A | Katie | The Family Computers | Pearson B | Anna E | Codes | Jim VDH | Matt B | Andy M P | Wesley | Logan W | Laslie C | Charlie D | Erik B | Heath S | Marc H | Connor S | Adam V | Ronin W | William W III | Jonathan B | Will N | Mike | Brandon T | Daniel R | Adam L | David H H | Nick V | Mike K | Eric A-F | Judith S | Alejandro M | Susannah G | Mush | Al F | Mick W | Keith S | Markus W | AggressiveToast | Liam R | Pippin N | Matt M | Minh N | jorgamund | Butterfly Bandit | Naman B | Gabe O | Josh H | Bellspr00ut | Kite | Doug | Lasse B | Retromation | John Thomas F | Juanda | Adam L | Geocracy | George L | b0rt | Elen R | David D | Casey D-VA | Zach B | Alex L | Connor C | Jeff N | Baker S | Daniel M | Adam S | Sergio L | Kyle S | ninjadeathdog | Sous Chef Russell | Greg | Zachary G | Adnan S | Celia S | Chris P | Lukerfuffle | David O | Kelly | Rory B | Adam V | JTH | David M | Varsha S | Stumpy J | Verlinp | Matthew W | Andy S | evie  | A42PoundMoose | Sam T | Maxwell H | Robert M | Jonah K | Morgan M | Robb S | Owen P | Samuel H | Michael W | Andrew S | Tom | Mitchell J | Justin M | Will L | InterJustin | Evan H | Sam B | Robert O | Xavier K | Charlie E | Theresa N | Jamal M | Korey | Thomas W | Monte J | Liam M | Nick S | Jellums | Peter R | Jennifer S | Will H | Derek H | Brian D | Augusto D | Ethan K | Michael O | Brandon B | Peter H | Matt S | Albatross Soup | Noah H G | Christiaan S | Nick P | Ryan O | CosmicBluesMinis | Derek N | Megan T | Josiah R | Austin B | Kaija R | Khaleel G | Rowan | Sam S | Hunter F | Togame1 | JT | John H | Makenzie B | James O | SalivationArmy | Bishop_Tacos | Alex L | Dakota K | Ryan H | Blake M | Wanda S. | Scott T | Rachel L | Ian B | Onatah | Samuel H | Myles H | Wiley K | Moonstone5tella | garretsr  | Eric D | Latte709 | Phillip F | Charles S | The WolfeKnight | Patrick M | Michael N | Brigitte L | Lee R | James Y | Reuben J | John C | Anisa | Maurice  | Nick M | Trey L | Sam N | Madeleine  | Randal S | Matthew M | leigha | Michael N | Connor  | Garrett P | Justin W | Brendan K | Michaela  | Adam G | Sebastian P | Júlía H | Marc | Christopher S | Alanna O | Scott R | Jackson F | Megan B | Erika Y | Christopher D | Matt D | Sebastian E | Liam B | Meredith | wreck | Daniel C | Coop | Brian M | Richie | Alexander M | Andrew K | Roc B | Alex G | Dan O | Laura W | Roberto S | Leo C | Wishbone | saddlebread | Roberge | Ian A | Max M | Michael V | Kyle R | Selina A | Noah O | Rich E | Michael G | Arcturus | Raihan S | Matthew M | Rowan S | Chris R | leastest | Kyle L | Anthony G | Adam | The Binding of Andrew | Hepahe | Jake L | Conor P | Cory F | Luke L | Matt C | Cian | John J P | GJ C | Mr Mallard | Sarah G | Vanessa J | Jack F | Kelsey J | Chase A | Elyse H | Anna | Nick Q | Tom H | Wes K | Erica S | Maria D | Chris M | RB | Jared B | Toots M | Aaron D | David C | Karen H | Walter N B | Kristin T | Joseph P | Tom W | Chad W | Chy J-B | Michaela W | Ryan W | Adam F | Scott H | Denys T | Lauren H | Andrew M | Alexander St. P | Griffin F | Ben G | killian | Therese K | Matthew V | Nick C | Zach A | SpagooliDude | Andrew L | Justin H | Alyssa R | jgprinters  | Rob K | Justin C | Jess B | Matt H | bsushi | sebsab  | Lilie G | Ian L | Chris | Pat M | markh | Craig | Matt F | Sebastian V N | Joeri B | Maryanne D | SkinTightAlloy  | Dennis C | Eliot O B | Shelly B | William L | Brendon T | Robert S | Murray  | Trevor B | salutepeezy  | Andrew D | David P | Alex M | Catherine O | Josh G | noname  | Jason  | Bede R | Mark O | Jeff C | Brett S | Inês G. | Kim M | Kamrin H | Minh T | Andrew D | Marxelle  | Akira  | Christopher B | Melimuffinpie  | bolt  | Scout W | Philip N★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

After some hobby chat, Camila tells Ana about the French videotex network ‘Minitel'. Launched in the early 80s, it was the most successful version of an online service before the World Wide Web. While other similar networks struggled, this episode looks at how the specifics of Minitel allowed it to become integrated into everyday life and what happened when France began adopting the Internet. We're on Instagram! And Twitter!Main research for the episode was done by Camila. I am releasing 36 straight days of podcast episodes about every election in Canadian history in honour of the new election. For the subsequent episodes in that series, make sure to subscribe to From John to Justin. In this election, the Liberals and Conservatives had two new leaders going head-to-head. It would be the first election where most women could vote, and the first woman would be elected. It would also begin 21 years of power for William L.M. King. E-mail: craig@canadaehx.com
