It's an all new That Real Blind Tech Show as Brian and Ed sit down with Mike May at the National Federation of the Blind 2023 Conference in Houston, Texas. Our apologies for our tech issue as even though we tested it, Ed's mic was not hot, so his mic quality is not what you are used to on That Real Blind Tech Show. Mike discusses using the Good Maps app to get around the Conference and find places of interest in Houston. Mike tells us a little about his career involvement with accessible navigation. Mike then tells us about some of the exciting changes coming to Good Maps Outdoors. Mike then lets us know what he likes about coming to conferences like the NFB and Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. We discuss what products at this year's NFB have excited Mike. We discuss the current 15 to 30 second delay from real time that is occurring on AM/FM radios at Major League Baseball games. At the 2023 NFB Conference a resolution was passed targeting this delay. You can read about the resolution and all the NFB resolutions passed at this year's conference here. We then find out why Mike is now consulting with Flight for Sight. Mike then explains the concept of the power of getting un-lost. Mike fills us in on his upcoming travels which are fairly extensive. If you would like to read Brian's recap about Ed and Brian's entire time in Houston, a recap of the NFB Conference, the Astros game, and more, you can read it here. We're kicking off "Mike May-ers," a month devoted to Canadian comic icon Mike Myers, with a look at his ill-fated Dr. Seuss adaptation, The Cat in the Hat. One of the more..., let's say, perplexing movies we've looked at, this one begs a lot of questions. Do adult jokes have a place in Seuss adaptations? Is the Cat in the Hat an inherently sinister character? What's the logic of the Cat's powers? And should Seuss's short, verse-focused books even be adapted to feature length in the first place? We discuss all this and more, as we examine the movie that made Dr. Seuss's widow swear off any future live-action adaptations of his work! Well, we've come to the end of the Mike May thirty-seven part trilogy and a good time was had by all. We discovered that there is no bear on the “Polar Express,” learned all about the Hesston Steam museum in LaPorte County, Indiana, found out what it's really like to a locomotive engineer on the Durango and Silverton and had a chance to hear about running on Amtrak. We took in so much information during this series, it feels like our head is about to esplode, but fortunately for the AML Nation Mike agreed to come back and update us on his latest adventures. What a great story, a true railfan since he could remember, supportive parents and a journey through railroading that most of us can only dream about. This is another great podcast we're sure you'll enjoy!!
Running the “Polar Express” is a full-time job and yet our guest Mike May still has time to occasionally put his name on the extra board and run some of the most iconic locomotives in North America. In this episode we dive deeper into what it takes to keep the “Polar Express” on track at several different locations around the continental United States and various spots around the globe. Mike has been an avid railroader most of his life whether it be model or prototype and his opinions on the hobby of model railroading and the influence railroading of any kind has on the population as a whole are interesting to say the least. There are so many that ride the Durango and Silverton that might only have a passing interest in are yet drawn to Colorado by the hundreds of thousands each year to ride a train. It's a great episode with lots of thoughtful discussion. Enjoy!!

It's part two pf the forty-seven-part Mike May trilogy and in this episode, we discover how a young boy from the suburbs of Chicago eventually is drawn to the wilds of Alaska and one of the most famous three-foot gauge railroads in the world, the White Pass and Yukon Route. Mike has built a beautiful rendition of this railroad in HOn3 that's just eighteen inches wide and over twenty feet long. Today the White Pass is the busiest tourist railroad in America after being shut down in 1982 due to lack of freight traffic and then re-open for tourism few years later. Mike has carefully modeled the railroad and eventually become a Master Model Railroader. We also discover that he enjoys writing, having had several articles published in the Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette as well as having the layout featured in the 2022 edition of Great Model Railroads. It's another great podcast and one we're sure you'll enjoy!!
We've met a lot of interesting people on this podcast but every once and awhile somebody comes along that just makes you sit up and take notice. Mike May's lifelong love of trains has taken him all sorts of interesting places but if you're wondering how a guy that studied theatrical lighting ended on a Brightline train in Miami in the month of November you've come to the right place. Whether he's waxing poetically about his love for the White Pass and Yukon Railroad or telling stories of his journey to become a locomotive engineer on the Durango and Silverton. One thing is abundantly clear Mike's story is to big for just one episode. Find a comfortable place to sit, grab a big bowl of coal ash, a tall cool glass of melted driver grease and enjoy!!!
Join us to hear highlights of the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show from Mike May, GoodMaps Chief Evangelist, and Gena Harper. Mike has been providing his summary of CES for over 20 years. My guest this week on the Work in Progress podcast is Mike May, who holds the title of chief evangelist at GoodMaps, a tech company helping the visually impaired navigate large venues such as convention centers, universities, hotels, and rail stations. "We take the outdoor navigation that everybody's used to and turn it into turn-by-turn navigation with GPS indoors. We do outdoors, but for most people, you lose your route and your directions once you go inside," explain May. May and I met at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. He has firsthand experience with the challenges of navigating a big space such as the Las Vegas Convention Center, which is a whopping 4.6 million square feet. May was blinded in an accident when he was a young child. May says there is a 70% unemployment rate among blind people -- he is among the 30% with a "good, viable job" as he describes it. "Technology's a big part of getting a job, and getting to a job, and maintaining that job and performing, but there's also about attitudes. And that's something that's going to be an ongoing process for everybody to understand that we're all individuals, not all blind people operate the same way," he explains. He says technology such at GoodMaps can help increase the potential for hiring and advancement for people like him once they enter the workforce. Mike May, chief evangelist, GoodMaps at CES (Photo: WorkingNation) Here is some of what May told me at CES. "In terms of blind people, the better you get around, the better you engage in life and in a career. And so if you go to a company these days and they have hoteling, or open desks, how do you find your desk when it may not be in the same place every day? "What if you go to see a client and you want to get to somebody's office without having to have sighted assistance? So we're providing independence and really the opportunity for career advancement and keeping a very precious job and doing it well by having the navigation component part of that equation. "I've talked about how getting to and from a job and navigating within that job is important, but there's a huge component about the tools that are available in a job. And there's so many pieces of software these days that are marginally accessible. "I could be sitting at my desk and only get 10% of the information that's on the screen. And a lot of these big companies have software that's not fully accessible. And so I may get through the hurdle of getting hired for a job, but then I can't manage the payroll software, or the sales software, or something like Salesforce, which takes a lot of training. "Even though these companies are making efforts to make this stuff accessible, that tends to be the most significant barrier once somebody does get hired." This podcast is about big ideas on how technology is making life better for people with vision loss. Artifacts from Blackbeard's sunken pirate ship are on display in the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, North Carolina. But now they are also accessible to visitors who are blind, thanks to the efforts of Peter Crumley, who spearheads the Beaufort Blind Project. In this episode, we ask: How can new technology help make sites like these as accessible to people who are blind as they are to sighted people? We profile three companies applying new technologies paired with smartphone capabilities, to make strides in indoor navigation, orientation, and information transfer. Idan Meir is co-founder of RightHear, which uses Apple's iBeacon technology to make visual signage dynamic and accessible via audio descriptions. We check in with Javier Pita, CEO of the NaviLens QR code technology which we profiled in our first season to see what they have been developing in the last two years. Rather than iBeacons or QR codes, GoodMaps uses LiDAR and geocoding to map the interior of a space. We speak with Mike May, Chief Evangelist. Thanks to Peter Crumley, the North Carolina Maritime Museum is fully outfitted with GoodMaps, and will soon have NaviLens as well. As the prices of these tools come down, the key will be getting them into all the buildings, organizations, and sites of information transfer that people who are blind need to access – which is all of them. The Big Takeaways: Beaufort Blind Project. Peter Crumley, a blind resident of Beaufort, North Carolina, has advocated having accessibility tools brought to various parts of his hometown. Along the way, he helped the North Carolina Maritime Museum outfit itself with GoodMaps technology for indoor navigation, and with NaviLens QR codes for information transfer. Thanks to these new technologies, the museum artifacts are now accessible to everyone. RightHear. Idan Meir cofounded RightHear, which uses iBeacon technology paired with users' smartphones to guide visitors who are blind through an indoor space. iBeacons send unique signatures via low Bluetooth signals to phones inside the radius. When these iBeacons are paired with areas of interest in a space (e.g. the front door, the counters, or the bathrooms) users can orient themselves within a space, and identify where they want to go and how they want to navigate to each location. RightHear translates the information embedded in each beacon into audio feedback for users. On the subject of feedback, Idan Meir is looking for beta testers to try out RightHear and provide him with constructive feedback. NaviLens. We profiled NaviLens QR code technology in an episode from our first season. In this episode, we follow up with Javier Pita to see what has been in development in the last two years. Since we last spoke, NaviLens has launched NaviLens 360, which uses magnets to help guide users who are blind to the NaviLens codes, even if their camera is having trouble picking up the code, making the app even more user-friendly. In addition, NaviLens has launched a partnership with Kellogg's in Europe and North America to test the effectiveness of the Navilens code on consumer product packaging. GoodMaps. GoodMaps uses LiDAR technology to map a space. Lasers are sent out from the LiDAR sensor, and when they bounce back, they have captured distances from the point of origin. Institutions work with GoodMaps to pay for the mapping service, and then users can access the maps for free. The app uses audio to communicate navigational directions with users. Technological advancement. Each of these tools relies on component technologies that have gotten less expensive in recent years (iBeacons, QR Codes, and LiDAR). They are also able to exist because their target markets carry smartphones in their pockets, enabling these potential users to access the tools quickly and easily, without much additional hassle or investment. Distribution. In this episode, we profile three different approaches to broadening access to indoor navigation technology, including for orientation and information transfer, proving there are many ways to solve these problems. It is good that some of these tools can be paired, as has been done at the North Carolina Maritime Museum, and that users may be able to choose which tools work best for them. The key will be getting them into all the buildings, organizations, and sites of information transfer that people who are blind need to access – which is all of them. Tweetables: “The advocacy is so important; when you're actually interfacing with the app to make the app better and make it work in a way that a blind person really needs it to work.” – Peter Crumley, Beaufort Blind Project “Well, it's gonna be built from blind perspective philosophy. So not only will it work for me — it will work for anyone, totally blind and fully sighted to give an interactive experience.” – Peter Crumley, Beaufort Blind Project “Imagine, if this technology will be in all the products, we will solve the problem of accessible packaging for all users.” – Javier Pita, NaviLens “The point is we have solved the last few yards of the wayfinding problem that is super important for a blind user. And this was born in New York City with the collaboration with the MTA and the department of transportation of New York City.” – Javier Pita, NaviLens “That camera picks up the environment and it compares it with that point cloud and says, “I see based on this particular image … that you are near the Starbucks,” or “You're near Gate 27.” –Mike May, GoodMaps “It was important and kind of obvious for us from the very early on, you know, that nothing about us without us. It was clear to us that we have to involve users in the process. –Idan Meir, RightHear Contact Us: Contact us at podcasts@lighthouseguild.org with your innovative new technology ideas for people with vision loss.
