Episode Notes In this episode of Sunday Edition, Anthony sits down with Gabriel Habech, the co-creator of Fovionics, to dive deep into the story behind a revolutionary piece of wearable tech designed for the blind and low vision community. Gabriel shares how he and his co-founder first met while studying engineering at FIU and began collaborating on ways to use technology for real-world impact. Inspired by Gabriel's close family friend Augusto — who lost his vision at age 7 — the two began exploring solutions that address challenges canes alone can't solve. The result: Fovionics smart glasses, equipped with innovative object detection sensors and an AI companion built specifically with feedback from our community. During this insightful conversation, Anthony and Gabriel walk through the development process step-by-step, answer listener questions, and unpack how Fovionics is the first to use this specific type of sensor in smart glasses, allowing for detection of hazards like low-hanging branches and signage — often missed by traditional mobility tools. They also discuss the real cost of access technology, how Fovionics' subscription model can help ease financial barriers, and why early community involvement is essential. In this episode of Double Tap, Steven and Shaun explore the expanding world of AI-powered vision across devices and platforms. Steven shares his first hands-on experience using Google Gemini's live vision feature on the Samsung Galaxy S25, using it to identify blinking lights and navigate the menu on an inaccessible VoIP phone—saving himself an Aira call in the process. They dive deep into what this technology can do (and what it can't), including its potential for identifying objects like mugs, clothing, CDs, and reading text on the fly. While Gemini impresses in some use cases, its limitations in real-time accuracy reveal that we're still a few steps away from fully trusting AI for independent navigation or complex spatial tasks.Listeners also weigh in. Aaron shares a glowing review of the Stellar Trek and its breadcrumb navigation, color detection, and tactile buttons—offering a hands-free experience separate from his smartphone. Steven reflects on past struggles with the device and confirms plans to revisit it with Humanware's help for a more in-depth review.Other topics include: The strengths and weaknesses of the Envision smart glasses vs. Echo Vision by Agiga Meta Smart Glasses glitches and fixes The growing reliability of AI voices and TTS tools for audio production The future of smart glasses hardware amid global supply issues A hilarious and practical debate on using fingers vs. liquid level indicators for pouring teaWith firsthand insights, practical listener advice, and thoughtful reflections on what accessible AI could mean for blind users, this episode offers both inspiration and grounded realism.Get in touch with Double Tap by emailing us feedback@doubletaponair.com or by call 1-877-803-4567 and leave us a voicemail. Today we are breaking down EssilorLuxottica, a global leader in the eyewear industry, formed by the merger of Essilor and Luxottica in 2018. Today the business sports a nearly $130 billion market cap. EssilorLuxottica represents a vertically integrated business, encompassing design, manufacturing, distribution, and retail operations across both vision care and eyewear fashion segments. To break down EssilorLuxottica, I am joined by Swetha Ramachandran who manages the Artemis ‘leading consumer brand' strategy and is co-manager of the ‘global select' and ‘global focus' strategies. Swetha analyzes the strategic rationale behind the merger, assessing how it shaped the company's competitive advantages. We discuss the economics of prescription lenses, high-fashion sunglasses, and iconic brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley. We also explore the impact of emerging technologies like Smart Glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and evolving consumer preferences on the eyewear market, as well as the competitive impact of upstarts like Warby Parker. Please enjoy this breakdown of EssilorLuxottica. Smart glasses, such as the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses (Meta glasses hereafter), will likely facilitate terrorist activities, as malicious actors are likely to divert the initial use of the glasses to serve criminal or terrorist objectives. Potential terrorists will likely use the glasses as props to enhance their operational capabilities and efficiency in carrying out attacks, likely improving attack preparation and planning, surveillance tactics, and espionage. Given the glasses' capabilities to capture and broadcast photos, videos, and sounds, potential terrorists will likely use them to access sensitive information and sites, record the topography of potential targets, security measures, and personnel, or live-stream terrorist attacks. Given the device's potential discretion and users' ability to disguise them as normal glasses, security services will likely have difficulty identifying potential threats on the ground. On the other hand, the glasses' connectivity functions will enable law enforcement to track online individuals using the glasses for terrorist purposes by identifying networks, GPS, or IP addresses. In this episode, Agathe Labadi joins Arnold Koch to provide us with a deeper understanding of the threat impact of smart glasses.
