Tuesday Topics will focus on how AI is being used by people who are blind! This was planned for last Tuesday but the ACB Board of Directors preempted our discussion! We will be expanding our second topic from last week! I wonder how many of us are using artificial intelligence to describe pictures and other things. I saw a long article almost a year ago about a blind person who was using A i to describe coins he was collecting! Are there other things you are using these programs to accomplish? How well do they work? Have you noticed "hallucinations" much? Are they becoming less common? Are there things you can't do now with artificial intelligence that you would like to be able to do? There are lots of ways that we can access artificial intelligence! How should we do it? Should we use AIRA? Should we concentrate on the approach of Be My Eyes? Should we expect that entities like copilot will become the way we implement AI. Should the use of AI become part of the curriculum of rehab agencies? Should ACB, perhaps through BITS (Blind Information Technology Specialists), consider doing some training for us? Are we making AI more important for people who are blind than it needs to be? Should we be concerned over what has happened to Orcam? What are the implications of this development for those who own Orcam products? There are lots of questions and lots of issues!
On the show today Steven and Shaun discuss various topics including the new studio setup, the MX keys keyboard, and the future of Google Chrome OS. They touch on the updates to Chrome OS that benefit users of ChromeVox, such as better PDF support and a new read-aloud mode. The hosts express their thoughts on the potential of Chrome OS in education and the workplace, as well as the importance of accessibility in technology. In this conversation, Shaun and Steven discuss the frustration of reader mode not working consistently on websites, the benefits of using RSS readers, and the importance of focusing on apps for different platforms. They also touch on the closure of AppleVis and the uncertainty surrounding OrCam's exit from the visual aid market. The conversation highlights the challenges of affordability and sustainability in the assistive tech industry, as well as the impact of subscription models on end users. OrCam is leveraging its expertise in AI-based devices to address the cocktail party problem in hearing technology with the introduction of OrCam Hear. The device, which made a notable debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), uses advanced AI to isolate and enhance specific voices in noisy environments. This innovation aims to significantly improve the speech-to-noise ratio, making it easier for users to participate in conversations even in loud settings. The OrCam Hear consists of earbuds, a smartphone dongle, and an app that allows users to select and focus on particular speakers while filtering out background noise. The technology, rooted in OrCam's successful development of assistive devices for the visually impaired, offers a groundbreaking solution for those with hearing difficulties, including individuals who do not require traditional hearing aids but struggle in noisy environments. Firstly of course, they are bone conduction head phones leaving my ears free to listen to what is around me. Secondly, they use a standard USBC port which means for my ever growing collection of USBC devices plus their cables, they still fit wright in. https://shop.visionaustralia.org/shokz-openmove-wireless-bluetooth-headphones-grey.html Update from Blazie Technologies Due to overwhelming interest in the BT Speak Pro, Blazie Technologies has decided to discontinue the Bt Speak basic. For the moment, the company is only selling from their Own website. https://www.blazietech.com Another Update, Touch Pad Pro Foundation Getting Closer (sort of) to Launching the Braille Doodle — Copy of Email April 5 2024 Dear BrailleDoodle Family, We've found it incredibly challenging! We're at the point where we just can't wait any longer! We've been hesitant to post an update without any significant progress to report. However, we're thrilled to share that recent advancements in manufacturing have been truly remarkable. Throughout this process, we've strived to maintain transparency, and in that vain, these past few months have been frustrating and, at times, even scary. It's hard to overstate the precision required for every aspect of the BrailleDoodle to function flawlessly. With over 1600 metal beads and holes in the BrailleDoodle, even a single malfunction is simply unacceptable. After numerous adjustments, we're finally producing fully functional BrailleDoodle samples, one after another. Below, you'll find an audio-described video showcasing the BrailleDoodle being put through its paces. We're confident that BrailleDoodles will soon be in the hands of people within the next couple of months. We understand that many of you are disappointed by the delays, but when you finally have this product in your hands, you'll realize it was worth the wait! The BrailleDoodle is poised to be nothing short of incredible! Despite the chaos of this journey, we're immensely grateful that you've chosen to be part of the BrailleDoodle family. A Chat About the ARX Vision Headset Being Reviewed by the Vision Australia Vision Store Hardware Bone conduction head set, on left sound cheek pad contains the volume up/down buttons, and right cheek pad is moulded in to the rectangular camera unit containing 3 clearly shaped buttons. From the bottom of the camera module is the fixed UsBC cable. Microphone is also in the camera housing. Software ARX Android only app at the moment used to power the head set, enabling both local and online processing of scene detection, specific object detection, short OCr text, document OCR scanning, face recognition, and QR code scanning. Onboarding on device when first using it, training mode to remind user how to position camera, and Help mode to remind users on how to use the 3 buttons. ARX head set can be used via the buttons or controlled from simple voice commands. Note - ARX head set connected via a UsBC cable to the Android phone. Benefits All processing is done via the smart phone/cloud, head set there to to provide audio output, mic input, and image processing via the camera. Having a wired connection leads to faster data transfer between the head set and the phone. Scene detection works extremely well, as does Object specific recognition, Document scanning, and face detection. Short text recognition perhaps not as fast as Seeing AI app on iOS, but certainly usable. Audio processing sound is heard to let user know that the ARX head set is active in a mode, and no sound when the unit is put in to idle mode. A lot more cost effective than other similar products on the market. Braille companion getting started guide included. Points To Consider The screen reader Talkback running on the Android phone is very soft volume wise compared to the self voicing of the ARX head set. The maximum volume of the self voicing on the ARX head set is distorted at the maximum volume. The camera unit which gently touch's the side of the face does get quite warm, not hot, but very noticeable. Aira not yet supported on the ARX head set but coming soon. iPhone compatibility being worked on. Blind Shell Classic 2 app being worked on. Moving forward, most functions will bee via the cloud for getter processing of images etc requiring cellular data on the phone, works well on Wifi at home. Excellent product under development. For more info: https://arx.vision As a bit of a result of a chat outcome from Tech Friday last week (my weekly tech chat Zoom meeting), thinking of doing a “smack down” chat concerning the ARX, Orcam, and Envision in January 2023. Resetting Goals on your Apple Watch Due to my Karate journey, I've had to up my goals on my Apple Watch and surprisingly I couldn't remember where to do this. In a nut shell, it's in the Activity app on the Apple Watch, and you need to scroll down wright to the bottom of the screen to find the change goals button. https://www.cultofmac.com/671532/how-to-set-apple-watch-move-goal/ Accessibility Assistant for Apple Watch, iPhone, and Mac This is a shortcut you can run which allows you to pop in your general disability, and any sub-disabilities as it were, and then get recommendations in notes for accessibility settings. Note - as the Apple Watch does not have an actual notes app, you run the Apple Watch short cut on your iPhone, iPad or Mac along with the other two for iOS or Mac. Is Siri Falling Behind with Natural Language Processing Last week I wanted to remind myself how to count to 10 in Japanese as part of my Shotokan Karate training. When I asked Alexa, I got the answer in counting to 10. However, when I asked Siri, she translated “how do I count to 10 in Japanese” as a direct translation sigh. Alexa and Google are still forging ahead, and can't help feeling Siri is falling more and more behind.Support this Vision Australia Radio program: https://www.visionaustralia.org/donate?src=radio&type=0&_ga=2.182040610.46191917.1644183916-1718358749.1627963141See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

During National Volunteer appreciation Week, held every year at this time in April, we're pleased to feature one of the kindest, friendliest people we know who's volunteered for years. We first met this guest at a Canadian Federation of the Blind convention out in B.C. and we greatly appreciate her support of this show. This week on Outlook, we speak with Nancy Gill, a mother and now newly a grandmother who's had to learn to manage and adapt to Usher's Syndrome throughout her life. Usher's is a condition causing both blindness and deafness. She tells us about the supports she didn't receive when she was in school as a child, learning braille in her sixties, and the complicated parent/child relationship. We hear about her love of cooking, gardening, and her new OrCam reader which she can use to do both those things more accessibly. Disability has, historically, and still does bring with it challenges (barriers society puts in the way), feelings of denial, and feelings of shame. We, as blind people, need to openly discuss it to eliminate it, how we can all feel useful. Gill goes through life with a sense of humour and outgoing outlook. We discuss the outlooks we have and choose to share and how we learn from others and Nancy's outlook is one of giving back and getting out there. She is doing this with a new senior's support group. Check out the following link to learn more about her Blind/DeafBlind Seniors National Roundtables . They have a new intake open right now and are highly recommended for any blind seniors out there who would like to join: https://cobd.ca/programs/roundtables/#seniors And for more on Nancy's story, check out Kerry's article featuring her in The Blind Canadian magazine: https://www.cfb.ca/the-blind-canadian-volume-20-december-2021?id=11
