In the dead of winter, 1979, a man called his local police station with concerns. He'd been staying at the Blue Mill Inn and had just been on the phone with the motel's desk clerk when he'd heard something unusual. It sounded as if someone had gotten into the office. Perhaps the person had been intent on robbing the motel? The caller heard the desk clerk, Janet Chandler, say “don't take it all, sir.” When police arrived at the motel, they discovered money missing from the register. Janet Chandler was nowhere to be found. A day later, a snowplow driver discovered Janet's body by the side of the road. The murder of 22-year-old Janet Chandler shocked the small community of Holland, Michigan. Who had murdered Janet? And why? For decades, those questions went unanswered. And now for a note about our process. For this episode, Kristin read a bunch of articles, then spat them back out in her very limited vocabulary. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: “Gang rape, murder and justice in a small town,” by Shaun Assael for Glamour “Conspiracy of silence,” by Victoria Corderi for NBC News “Second man convicted in Janet Chandler murder case dies in prison,” by Peg McNichol for WHTC “Witness provides graphic details of final hours,” by John Tunison for Michigan Live “State court rejects appeals of Chandler killers,” by Megan Schmidt for the Holland Sentinel “Chandlers can't forgive killers showing no remorse,” by Lee Lup for The Muskegon Chronicle “Witness: Guards plotted to ‘teach' victim a lesson,” by John Tunison for Michigan Live “Swank: ‘No excuse' for role in Chandler death,” by John Tunison for Michigan Live “Witness: I did not plan rival's death,” the Press Enterprise “Where are Jim and Glenna Chandler now?” by Sounak Sengupta for The Cinemaholic YOU'RE STILL READING? House impeachment manager Jamie Raskin delivered a speech during Trump's impeachment trial last week in which he made a direct appeal to reality: “Democracy needs a ground to stand upon,” he said. “And that ground is the truth." There's a lot of demand for reckoning in America right now. Cities around the country are debating and in some cases instituting some forms of reparations for Black residents. Last June, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) introduced a bill to establish a “United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation,” which has gained 169 co-sponsors. In December, even anchor Chuck Todd asked his guests on “Meet the Press” about the political prospects for a national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The calls for a rigorous public accounting of Trump-era misdeeds reached a crescendo in the aftermath of the violent attack on the Capitol in January: the impeachment proceedings against the former president became, all of a sudden, the de facto court for establishing the reality of the 2020 election results, even as Republican lawmakers voted to acquit. It raised the fundamental question: How do we establish the truth, amid a war on truth itself? On today's episode of the Mother Jones Podcast, journalists Shaun Assael and Peter Keating share their deep reporting into the history of the "truth and reconciliation" movement, here and abroad, and what we can learn from its promises and pitfalls—presenting a realistic view of their effectiveness as building blocks for reality, rather than magic bullets. “There can be no reconciliation before justice,” Keating says. Keep an eye out for their written investigation, appearing later this week at motherjones.com.

Sonny Liston is considered one of the best fighters of the last century. The former heavyweight champ was so feared it was often difficult for him to find opponents. He had to rely on mafia representation to help advance his career. However, after being beaten twice by Muhammad Ali, his career sputtered and his was left without direction. No longer being a profitable investment, the mafia no longer supported the ex-champ. He turned to working with loan sharks and drug dealers as hired muscle to help make ends meet. Liston was a fighter and never backed down from pointing out when he felt he was wronged. This earned him many enemies in Las Vegas, where he resided, and ultimately may have cost him his life. This week, Killin Missin Hidden explores the mysterious death of Sonny Liston.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Liston#Deathhttps://medium.com/@brightonboy1901/the-mysterious-death-of-sonny-liston-a-boxing-conspiracy-4138ac4e2202https://www.bbc.com/sport/boxing/48974341https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/general/others/boxing-sonny-liston-was-murdered-by-mob-claims-hitmans-son-8803558.htmlhttps://www.vice.com/en_us/article/mvk7jn/who-killed-former-heavyweight-champion-sonny-listonhttps://www.wbur.org/onlyagame/2017/02/03/sonny-liston-shaun-asasel-book-boxinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muhammad_Ali_vs._Sonny_Listonhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bureau_of_Narcotics_and_Dangerous_Drugshttps://destinationhope.com/rohypnol-club-drug-or-date-rape-drug/Shaun Assael, The Murder of Sonny Liston, HighBridge (2016)

From the early 1980s on, every story about professional wrestling is a story about Vince McMahon. So what are the boys to do with a book that is, by its title, all about Vince? On this episode of Awesome Truth, we discuss Sex, Lies, and Headlocks, an attempt by Shaun Assael and Mike Mooneyham to tell both the story of Mr. McMahon and of pro wrestling in one swoop. They may not succeed entirely, but we get some great Vinnie McMahon highlights along the way, including how MTV's Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection began and how Vince assisted in the destruction of Jim Crockett Promotions. And, of course, a preview of the renowned Vince McMahon biopic...
On January 5, 1971, Sonny Liston was found dead in his home—of an apparent heroin overdose. But no one close to Liston believed that his death was accidental. Digging deep into a life that Liston tried hard to hide, investigative journalist Shaun Assael treats the boxer’s death as a cold case. The result ia page-turning whodunit about a glorious and grimy era of Las Vegas. Middle America was flocking to the Strip, transforming it from an exclusive playground for the mob to a mecca for corporate dollars. But the city was also rotting from within. Heroin was pouring over the border from Mexico, and the segregated Westside was on the cusp of a race war. The cops, brutally violent, were barely holding it together. Driving through town with the top of his pink Cadillac down, Sonny Liston was the one celebrity who was unafraid to bridge the two sides of Las Vegas. Cashing in on his fading notoriety in the casinos, he was dealing drugs, working for a crime syndicate, and trying to break into Hollywood—all with a boxer’s faith that he could duck any threat, slip any punch. Heroin addiction was the only knockout blow he didn’t see coming.THE MURDER OF SONNY LISTON: Las Vegas, Heroin, and Heavyweights-Shaun Assael
