Leave Wellness + Wisdom a Review on Apple Podcasts Power Quotes From The Show Thin Slice Your Purpose "A thin slice way to practice purpose is you would say, What is my purpose as ___ today? What is my purpose as a father today? After you practice daily purpose, you would practice like, what's my purpose this month? What's my purpose this quarter? What's my purpose this year? When you practice purpose thinking, eventually you'll get to, What is my life purpose? You just get a little closer because you're practicing, just like any other skill in sport or performance." - Dr. Michael Gervais Fear of Rejection "We have this mechanism in our brain that is scanning for potential rejection because rejection 250,000 years ago was a near death sentence. The brain is optimized without having to think to respond to threat. And the threat of rejection was a near death sentence. So when we see a sign of rejection, we conform, we contort, we will critique them or critique somebody else to take the heat off of us, or we'll just disconnect from the relationship. So it's such an intense thing that we will abandon our sense of self for the approval of others." - Dr. Michael Gervais Heal Your Trauma "The nature of trauma is that it's not the event itself that is the traumatizing bit. It's that that triggers a sense of aloneness and isolation because others around you don't relate to you. So healing happens when another person just looks at you and hold space for it and is in it with you. They might cry with you. They might laugh with you. They might get irritated, but they're holding the space for depth. That's where healing actually takes place for folks." - Dr. Michael Gervais Links From Today's Show  Michael Gervais 201 Finding Mastery: Michael Gervais The First Rule of Mastery: Stop Worrying about What People Think of You by Michael Gervais 70-Year-Old Billionaire Definition Of Success 366 Mark Wolynn | How To Heal Generational Trauma: The Thoughts, Feelings, Patterns & Behaviors Formed Before You Were Ever Born 595 Relationship Death + Rebirth: How to Let Love Lead Again + Let Go of The Anxious-Avoidant Dance (Margo Running + Carrie Michelle) Dr. Tim Brown Nate Hobgood-Chittick The Map of Consciousness Explained: A Proven Energy Scale to Actualize Your Ultimate Potential by David Hawkins Josh's Trusted Products | Up To 40% Off Shop All Products Biohacking BREATHE - 33% off with the code “PODCAST33” SaunaSpace - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" PLUNGE - $150 off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE" SiPhox - 10% off with code "JOSH" BON CHARGE - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" SpectraSculpt - 15% off with the code "JOSH15" Defender Shield - Save 10% with "TRENT10" Neuvana - Save 15% with "WELLNESSFORCE" Supplements Organifi - 20% off with the code ‘WELLNESSFORCE' MANNA Vitality - 20% off with the code "JOSH20" LiftMode - Save 10% with "JOSH10" Adapt Naturals - 15% off with code "WELLNESSFORCE" MitoZen - 10% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” Activation Products - 20% off with the code “WELLNESSFORCE” BiOptimizers - 10% off with the code "JOSH10" Lightbody Total Eye Health - 20% off with "JOSH20" at checkout. Why the Evangelical Movement Is in ‘Disarray' After Dobbs

The Ezra Klein Show

With Roe now overturned, the evangelical movement has achieved one of its decades-old political priorities. But for many evangelicals, this isn't the moment of celebration and unity it may have first appeared to be. In the wake of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, Russell Moore — a former president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, the policy wing of the Southern Baptist Convention — described the state of evangelicalism as one of “disarray.” He argues that surface-level political allegiances paint over much deeper divisions within what has become an increasingly polarized movement. Understanding those divisions and what they portend for evangelicalism is deeply important, in large part because of the movement's immense power in American politics.Moore is the editor in chief of Christianity Today; the author of numerous books, including “Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel”; and one of the most visible leaders in the evangelical movement right now. But he has also voiced some of the most stinging criticism of the movement's current direction. He believes that evangelicals' embrace of Donald Trump was a mistake and that the way many evangelicals are approaching the culture wars — with what Moore calls a “siege mentality” — is toxic for the faith. He encourages his fellow evangelicals to embrace their role as a “moral minority” in America instead of desperately clinging to political and cultural power. “The shaking of American culture is no sign that God has given up on American Christianity,” he writes in “Onward.” “In fact, it may be a sign that God is rescuing American Christianity from itself.”So this is a conversation about how evangelicalism morphed into the political identity we know it as today, why so many evangelicals have come to embrace apocalyptic thinking about politics and where the movement goes next now that Roe has been overturned.Mentioned“The Supreme Court Needs to Be Less Central to American Public Life” by Russell MooreBook RecommendationsThe Weight of Glory by C.S. “I think it's terribly dangerous for an artist to fulfill other people's expectations. If you feel safe in the area that you're working in, you're not working in the right area. Always go a little further into the water than you feel you're capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth. And when you don't feel that your feet are quite touching the bottom, you're just about in the right place to do something exciting.”—  David Bowie,  David Bowie: The Last Five Years On the 1st anniversary of the release of the revised and expanded 2nd edition of Steve's best-selling book Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption--which confusingly is also the 2nd anniversary of the 1st edition's release--we celebrate its success and impact with our very special guest Forrester Research VP & Principal Analyst Sucharita Kodali.  Sucharita is not only one of retail's top thought leaders, but she was our very first guest on the podcast back in September of 2022 and she graciously wrote the Foreword to Remarkable Retail's 2nd edition. We unpack some of the key lessons from the book and take stock of Steve and Sucharita's predictive prowess. We also wonder aloud about whether there is complacency setting in among too many retailers, if a "collapse of the unremarkable middle" is inevitable and whether certain oft talked about "innovations" are victims of the hype cycle. But first examine the retail news of the week that caught our attention, including trying to be glass is half full on JC Penney's new strategy to "love the customers that love us." We then move on to marvel at Shein's stratospheric $100 billion valuation, before weighing in on whether the Neiman Marcus Group's new partnership is rather Farfetched (see what we did there?). We close with our take on what to make of Walmart's bold moves to deal with trucking shortages.  Note: The John Oliver "This Week Tonight" segment referenced in the episode can be found here. And don't forget to check out our bonus episode recapping this year's Shoptalk conference, recorded live from high above the Vegas Strip.  About SucharitaSucharita serves digital business strategy professionals. As a professional track and field athlete and Olympic Trials Qualifier, Steven Benedict has run in some of the worlds most prestigious events. In addition to the Adidas Classic Diamond League and US Nationals, he ran for Nike for 2 years and was a Penn Relays Champion. Featured in 50 national and international magazines such as Train, ESPN Magazine, Mens Fitness, Mens Health and Fitness RX, Steven has expertise and contributions that extend. far beyond the track. These accomplishments were not what was expected based on his early years. Steven's childhood began in an abusive home which resulted in he and his brothers placement in foster care. Over the course of his first 8 years, he was moved between homes and motels with little certainty of what the next day would bring. At age 8, he and his brother were adopted by an incredible couple which possessed traits of joy, humility, sacrifice and unconditional love. The time with these parents would be short lived, however as both his mom and dad suffered untimely deaths within a few years of each other. The pain of these losses nearly ended Steven's professional career but as history would repeat itself, once again, Steven defied the odds and is back stronger than ever to be proof that experiences in life are nothing more than another day of training in becoming a champion for others. He is passionate to set the pace for the coming generations as an example of what relentless strength and faith can accomplish. https://fosteringsuccess.co/ https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/whats-your-armor-with-steven-benedict/id1565606454 www.stevieyb.com

We look closer at the role of civil unrest as an agent of change.Plus, in today's book club, a Mississippian who is one of the most read sportswriters in the country tells us about his book, “The Cost of These Dreams.”Segment 1:Earlier this week, President Donald Trump addressed the nation from the Rose Garden - speaking on the weekend of protests that erupted throughout the country. Nearby, just outside the gates of the White House, in Lafayette Park, armed police began forcibly clearing the streets of unsuspecting protesters who had been gathered for hours. That move, which was ultimately done to clear a way for the President to have a photo op at St. John's Episcopal Church, is now under scrutiny from the House's Committee on Homeland Security. Mississippi Representative Bennie Thompson, who chairs the committee, is requesting a briefing from the Secret Service regarding the abrupt decision to clear the park. He discusses the request and the role of Homeland Security with our Michael Guidry.Segment 2:The nation is on the eve of its second weekend of widespread protests following the death of George Floyd. Protesters are marching and shouting in the streets of American cities demanding their calls for reform be heard. C.J. Recently, the U. S. women's soccer team thumped Thailand 13-0 in the Women's World Cup. It got ugly, and led to criticism: some felt the American ladies wrongly ran up the score and that their goal celebrations were a bit over the top. Well, whether that criticism is just or unjust, you can't blame the best left back in U. S. women's soccer. That's because Jaelene Hinkle wasn't on the pitch during the multiple celebrations. In fact, she's not even on the team. Hinkle's saga began back in 2015 after the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex “marriage.” Hinkle posted the following on Instagram: “I believe with every fiber in my body that what was written 2,000 years ago in the Bible is undoubtedly true …. This world may change, but Christ and His Word NEVER will.” As you can imagine, this made Hinkle a marked woman, especially among soccer fans who identified as LGBT. Then, in 2017, Hinkle chose to withdraw from the national team rather than wear a U. S. team jersey sporting rainbow numbers in order to celebrate gay pride. Hinkle explained her decision, “I just felt so convicted in my spirit that it wasn't my job to wear this jersey… I gave myself three days to just seek and pray and determine what (God) was asking me to do in this situation. If I never get another national team call-up again then that's just a part of His plan, and that's okay. Maybe this is why I was meant to play soccer, to show other believers to be obedient.” Well, her obedience came at a price. Playing for the North Carolina Courage team in the National Women's Soccer League, Hinkle is the recipient of boos and jeers almost every time she touches the ball. And in the run-up to this year's Women's World Cup, U.S. Coach Jill Ellis invited Hinkle to try out for the team. After three days of workouts, Ellis, who is gay and “married” to her lesbian partner, cut Hinkle, citing “footballing reasons.” Many were skeptical that the best women's fullback in the country—something even her pro-LGBT critics admit—isn't good enough to play on the U. S. Women's World Cup team. According to SB Nation's Kim McCauley, who by the way called Hinkle a “vocal homophobe,” “there isn't a better pure tactical fit available [for the U. S. team] than Hinkle.” Now, McCauley posits that Coach Ellis only invited Hinkle to tryout to avoid a lawsuit. Nonetheless, the mere fact that Hinkle was invited to try out sent LGBT fans into conniptions, with the usual complaints of feeling betrayed and hurt, that someone with traditional religious views might dare represent the U. S. More rationally, some fans expressed concern about “team chemistry.” After all, as I already mentioned, coach Ellis is gay, and team star Megan Rapinoe has posed without clothes on the cover of ESPN Magazine with her girlfriend. Of course, chemistry isn't a problem for Hinkle's North Carolina Courage team. Coach Paul Riley and teammate Jessica MacDonald both have stated publicly that Hinkle's faith has not negatively affected that team or its play. Hinkle's saga is only the most recent evidence that American Christians need to develop a theology of getting fired, or if you happen to be in Hinkle's profession, a theology of getting cut from the team. It's simply more likely than not that we too will face a choice at some point between our career and our convictions. We aren't the first Christians who have had to face this choice, and thank God the choice isn't our life and our convictions, as it is for our brothers and sisters in other parts of the world. Jaelene Hinkle chose well. Will we?

Sarah's list of “firsts” could fill several lifetimes: setting her first World Record (100m dash) at age 13, first amputee featured on the cover of Runner's World Magazine, first female athlete to complete the Ironman World Championship on a prosthetic (2005), first amputee (male or female) to grace the cover of ESPN Magazine's Body Issue, first amputee (male or female) to participate in CBS's “The Amazing Race”, first amputee (male or female) to complete the World Marathon Challenge (7 half-marathons on 7 continents in 7 days), and first female athlete to run the Great Wall Marathon in China on a prosthesis. Oh yeah, and Sarah's represented Team USA at the Paralympics, is a three-time ITU Paratriathlon World Champion, has won six gold medals, and held five previous world records…all while having a full-time job at Nike. Despite Sarah's extensive accomplishments, she will tell you that she's made of the same stuff inside all of us, and she truly believes that we can all seek and accomplish what we envision. The bolder the better. That's what's bringing her back to the Kona Ironman World Championship on October 13, 2018 on Ironman's 40th anniversary. Get ready for a serious shot of inspiration - Sarah's energy and can-do attitude is contagious! Who among us has not been paralyzed by fear? In this episode, award-winning journalist Jaimal Yogis explains why fear so often dominates our lives, what makes it tick, and how we can use fear to our advantage. He shares with us his experiences living in a monastery, overcoming heartbreak, and how we all can emerge triumphant from even the most paralyzing of fear, sadness and loss. Learn how fear evolved in the human brain, how to use the latest neuroscience to transform fear memories. Discover why fear spreads between us and how to counteract fearful "group think," and how to turn fear into a performance enhancer - athletically and at work. A graduate of the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Jaimal Yogis is the author of the best-sellers Saltwater Buddha, a coming-of-age memoir about how surfing and the sea helped him transition back to the world after a year in a Zen monastery (now also a documentary film); and The Fear Project, which looks at the neuroscience of fear and courage, using science, mindfulness, and sports to reveal ways in which humans can live more fully. His new book, All Our Waves Are Water: stumbling toward enlightenment and the perfect ride, uses the sea as a metaphor to explore the true self. Jaimal's writing has appeared in ESPN Magazine, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and many others. He teaches meditation and creative writing at places like Spirit Rock, Kripalu, 1440 Multiversity, and the Writing Pad.   Special Guest: Jaimal Yogis www.jaimalyogis.com   Creator & Host: Brett Larkin http://www.brettlarkin.com/   Sound Engineer: Zach Cooper zmcmusic.tumblr.com   Producer: Benn Mendelson www.sivanaspirit.com www.sivanapodcast.com
