In 2018 I interviewed the legendary actor Michael K Williams about his HBO documentary Raised In the System which gave him a chance to talk about criminal justice and also about his incarcerated nephew Dominic who did over 20 years inside. It was a powerful interview—we talk about prison, drug addiction, acting, the Wire, the Night Of, and Dominic who had been released days earlier and was there at the interview with us. It was an honor to spend time with Michael—he was an intense freedom fighter who cared deeply about criminal justice reform. His intensity comes through in this conversation. Omar's coming… BACK to the Mike Safo podcast… the iconic actor Michael K. Williams, aka “Omar” from The Wire and “Chalky White” from Boardwalk Empire” stopped by Jack Demsey's to join Lee Abbamonte and myself for some shenanigans. Growing up, he was the furthest thing from a gangster kid and now the hipsters are taking over his beloved Brooklyn. Mike talks about his infamous roles as Chalky, and how he parlayed playing Omar on The Wire into meeting President Obama. What it's like going through the acting and auditioning process and how I'm trying to find him a role that's not so emotionally draining. He takes his passion for producing to his upcoming documentary, “Diamond in the Rough” on HBO which touches close to home. Things get personal during the filming of “The Night Of” as he tells us about his family members in the system. We hear Mike tell the story of his infamous scar, and how he came in contact with the person who gave it to him twice in his life. From playing and meeting Rick Ross to trying to smoke weed with Tupac and much, much more… over 90 minutes of me, Lee and Michael K. Williams! Check out Mike and Lee's websites here.. http://www.michaelkennethwilliams.com/ http://www.leeabbamonte.com/
In this episode of the podcast it appears that Big Brother may have been listening to us recording, as Wade's entire neighborhood decided to go dark with a large power outage soon after we stared talking about a potential vaccination mandate for America's food supply chain front line workers...that being said, apologies for the last minute or so; Wade had to hop back on with his cell phone, and it sounds rough! We also pay tribute to Michael K Williams, discuss the impact of The Wire, and talk some all around actors/entertainment. #MichaelKWilliams #VaccinationMandate #FoodSupplyChain #TheWire #TheSopranos #Boardwalk Empire #HBO #Acting #PowerOutage #Entertainment Photo Credit: (Jesse Dittmar/For The Times)

The actor Michael K. Williams passed away two weeks ago of an apparent drug overdose. Williams starred in Boardwalk Empire and Lovecraft Country, but he came to fame playing the role of Omar in The Wire, the award-winning HBO series produced by David Simon. When his death was announced on September 6, tributes poured in. On Sunday night, the Baltimore Ravens honored him at their game against the Kansas City Chiefs. That same night, the actress Kerry Washington paid tribute to his gifts at the Emmy Awards ceremony. "Michael was a brilliantly talented actor and a generous human being," she said, "who has left us far too soon...” Tom's next guest is Dominic Dupont, a nephew of Michael K. Williams. He served 20 years of a 25-years-to-life prison sentence for a murder conviction when he was 19. Pardoned in 2017 by then-NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, today he is the program director of “Making Kids Win,” the foundation his uncle set up to reduce gun violence and encourage kids in the arts. Dominic Dupontjoins us on Zoom, from New York, to remember Michael K. Williams as an actor, a justice activist, and a loving and supportive uncle. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Actor Michael K. Williams died earlier this month. He was 54 years old. He was best known for playing Omar Little on The Wire. Michael began his career in entertainment first as a dancer in New York, then an actor with a handful of walk-on credits. By the time he auditioned for The Wire he was in his mid-30s. When Jesse Thorn talked with him in 2016, he was starring in a show called Hap and Leonard. When we heard the news about Williams' passing, we went into the archives to listen back to our conversation. There's some stuff you might've heard in the past, a lot of stuff you haven't.
Michael K. Williams was best known for playing Omar on 'The Wire' and Chalky White on 'Boardwalk Empire.' He died Sept. 6 of a suspected drug overdose. In 2008, Williams told Terry Gross the story behind the scar on his face and his background in dance. In 2016, he reflected on his lucky breaks and what it was like to leave Omar behind. "When 'The Wire' and the character of Omar ended, I had zero tools, personally speaking, in how to deal with letting that go. ... I didn't equip myself with the tools of how to wash that off my psyche." Maureen Corrigan reviews Sally Rooney's new novel, 'Beautiful World, Where Are You.' Also, we hear from U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo. She's the first Native American appointed to the position. She has a new memoir, 'Poet Warrior,' that's in part about her family's history. She's a member of the Muskogee (Creek) Nation.
