Over the weekend, folks, there was an amazing thing that happened, Mike Pence was asked who told him to buck the trend and certify the election.. it was almost as if 'the mob' wanted a name.. and the answer Pence gave was amazing. Almost concurrently, Congressman Jamie Raskin was asked about his plans in the Select Committee to "strengthen" the Electoral Count Act and his answers are equally amazing. But the real question is how many Republicans are willing to step forward and say that yes, they support strengthening the Electoral Count Act so that what we had happen on J6 (and almost happen) on J6 never happens again? #MikePence #JamieRaskin

Rep. Jamie Raskin took to the House floor last week to lay out exactly what is at stake in the battle of Steve Bannon's refusal to testify before the Jan. 6th Select Committee. Few members have done more to get to the bottom of what happened that day than Raskin and punish those who were responsible. Before being elected to Congress, he was a Constitutional Law Professor. It was he who led the charge to impeach former President Trump over his role in inciting the attack. Congressman Jamie Raskin is a Member of Congress representing the 8th District in Maryland, the home of the worldwide headquarters of the Planetary Gigs Society, and also plays piano. So, Jefferson Glassie caught up with him to ask a few questions about music. Raskin says there was always music in his home growing up, because his father was a classical music prodigy on the piano. His father saw the world through music and it was essential to who he was, and he thought society should be organized in a way that connected people just like music does. Raskin professes that he is not a musician, but only plays by ear, fools around, and improvises on the piano, but also said his entire family plays music, so music is always around. He says that with all the issues we are having, such as the covid pandemic and the January 6 insurrectionary violence, one can despair sometimes. However, he says, “When you listen to music, you understand where humanity is actually going and what we're really capable of.” He says so many of the pathologies of our time result from people being separate, but music brings people together. Raskin says he is a big champion of science and math, but if we lose touch with literature, music, the arts, we could be headed to a dangerous place.

Representative Jamie Raskin, who represents Maryland’s Eighth District, had an enormous task ahead of him: he was mounting the defense of the Electoral College vote. When a violent mob incited by Donald Trump breached the building, Raskin’s life was in danger, along with the lives of his daughter and son-in-law, who had joined him that day for support. Just weeks later, when the House impeached Donald Trump for his role in inciting that insurrection, Raskin was the lead manager prosecuting the case. Raskin told David Remnick about the devastation of a suicide in the family, his condolence calls from President Biden and Vice-President Harris, and how he believed the entire Senate would unite to convict Donald Trump.

They did consider witnesses nonetheless, says Neguse, but to him, it came down to timing. “It was clear that other witnesses whom had been speculated about in the media in terms of potential witnesses that we could have heard from were unlikely to voluntarily comply and voluntarily appear, which meant we would have to issue subpoenas. And they could very well contest those subpoenas in court,” he says. Ultimately, he feels the point was made, and everyone knows Trump was responsible: “That is something that obviously was crystal clear by virtue of the evidence that we showed during the course of the trial, which of course the American public had a chance to see as well.” He shares his own experience during the Capitol insurrection, including the moment he realized things had gotten bad. “I texted my wife and told her that, uh, I loved her and our daughter,” he says. Plus! He and Molly discuss what plans the House has to make sure this doesn’t happen again and that people in power are held responsible. And is Medicare for All and federal legalization of marijuana on the horizon?  See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Congressman Jamie Raskin on Impeaching Donald Trump—Again

Tommy Raskin, a twenty-five-year-old law student, took his own life on New Year’s Eve, after a long battle against depression. His family laid him to rest on January 5th, and, the next day, his father went to the United States Capitol, where he serves in Congress.

House impeachment manager Jamie Raskin delivered a speech during Trump's impeachment trial last week in which he made a direct appeal to reality: “Democracy needs a ground to stand upon,” he said. “And that ground is the truth." There's a lot of demand for reckoning in America right now. Cities around the country are debating and in some cases instituting some forms of reparations for Black residents. Last June, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) introduced a bill to establish a “United States Commission on Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation,” which has gained 169 co-sponsors. In December, even anchor Chuck Todd asked his guests on “Meet the Press” about the political prospects for a national Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The calls for a rigorous public accounting of Trump-era misdeeds reached a crescendo in the aftermath of the violent attack on the Capitol in January: the impeachment proceedings against the former president became, all of a sudden, the de facto court for establishing the reality of the 2020 election results, even as Republican lawmakers voted to acquit. It raised the fundamental question: How do we establish the truth, amid a war on truth itself? On today's episode of the Mother Jones Podcast, journalists Shaun Assael and Peter Keating share their deep reporting into the history of the "truth and reconciliation" movement, here and abroad, and what we can learn from its promises and pitfalls—presenting a realistic view of their effectiveness as building blocks for reality, rather than magic bullets. “There can be no reconciliation before justice,” Keating says. Keep an eye out for their written investigation, appearing later this week at motherjones.com.

PODCAST SUMMARY HOUR 1: Brett Winterble guest hosts for Rush on Wednesday. Capitol riot not in doubt, the culpability is. Impeachment trial is religious zealotry. There’s no direct connection from Trump to attack. Democrats use Jan. 6 acts to flip script on Republicans. Jamie Raskin better than Schiff and Nadler at impeachment. Dems hail Founders that they otherwise wish to cancel. Leftists on Discord admit they infiltrated rally and incited violence. Long game of impeachment. A tale of two realities. Washington is force. It’s all about control. Guilt by association. PODCAST SUMMARY HOUR 2: Joaquin Castro’s incitement. Dirty little secret for impeachment managers. John Sullivan incites violence but Democrats use his footage for trial. Eric Swalwell’s Chinese penetration is fair game. Bill Cassidy virtue signals after impeachment vote. Mark Cuban panders to China and the woke, ditches Star-Spangled Banner. Dems repeat the same things over and over at trial. Sullivan has more capability than Trump. Colin Kaepernick’s social justice SPAC. We, the people, should remain patriotic. Trump impeached for having a different opinion. PODCAST SUMMARY HOUR 3: An overwhelming majority did not storm the Capitol. The left’s fear. Legitimate questions. It’s about dollars in coffers, not opening up schools. Dirty little secret: Teachers unions feel safer at home. Rush is right again! Salesforce says 9 to 5 workday is dead. Underwhelming Trump attorneys. Another 9/11? No, the Capitol riot was another Benghazi. The Great American MacGuffin. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. A first 100 days to crash and burn. If we stay united, we can’t lose this fight. Impeachment Trial Day One: The Damning Case Against Donald Trump

Tears on the Senate floor. Shocking footage of the insurrection. A bumbling and widely panned performance by Donald Trump's legal team. The former president's second impeachment has now moved to trial, and House Democrats came prepared. A little over one month after a riotous mob laid siege to the very chamber in which the trial was now taking place, Democrats presented such a damning trail of evidence that that it caused one GOP senator, Bill Cassidy, to change his vote on the trial's constitutionality. Mother Jones national political reporter Pema Levy joins Jamilah King from DC to recap and explain what went down on Day One. Pema explains how the House impeachment managers, led by Rep. Jamie Raskin, a constitutional scholar, will set out to prove Trump responsible for the deadly attack. Meanwhile, Republican Senators are expected to try to wiggle out of the toxic political shadow of their former president by sticking to an argument that the proceedings are unconstitutional, letting Trump get off scot-free. Trump's acquittal is all but a foregone conclusion, and the trial is expected to be an unusually swift one. But as Pema explains, what happens over the next week or so will still be incredibly consequential and perhaps even more damaging for Republicans than Trump's first impeachment. For up-to-the-minute coverage of every twist and turn, head to motherjones.com, and for special bonus coverage, make sure you subscribe to the podcast, wherever you listen.
