The Author Events Series presents Jill Lepore  | We the People : A History of the U.S. Constitution Meelya Gordon Memorial Lecture Standby seating will be available in the overflow room for guests who wish to wait for an opportunity to be seated in the main auditorium, if space permits. These standby seats will be available on a first come, first served basis. Auditorium seats are not guaranteed. In Conversation with Kate Shaw Published on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding-the anniversary, too, of the first state constitutions-We the People offers a wholly new history of the Constitution. ''One of the Constitution's founding purposes was to prevent change,'' Lepore writes. ''Another was to allow for change without violence.'' Relying on the extraordinary database she has assembled at the Amendments Project, Lepore recounts centuries of attempts, mostly by ordinary Americans, to realize the promise of the Constitution. Yet nearly all those efforts have failed. Although nearly twelve thousand amendments have been introduced in Congress since 1789, and thousands more have been proposed outside its doors, only twenty-seven have ever been ratified. More troubling, the Constitution has not been meaningfully amended since 1971. Without recourse to amendment, she argues, the risk of political violence rises. So does the risk of constitutional change by presidential or judicial fiat. Challenging both the Supreme Court's monopoly on constitutional interpretation and the flawed theory of ''originalism,'' Lepore contends in this ''gripping and unfamiliar story of our own past'' that the philosophy of amendment is foundational to American constitutionalism. The framers never intended for the Constitution to be preserved, like a butterfly, under glass, Lepore argues, but expected that future generations would be forever tinkering with it, hoping to mend America by amending its Constitution through an orderly deliberative and democratic process. Lepore's remarkable history seeks, too, to rekindle a sense of constitutional possibility. Congressman Jamie Raskin writes that Lepore ''has thrown us a lifeline, a way of seeing the Constitution neither as an authoritarian straitjacket nor a foolproof magic amulet but as the arena of fierce, logical, passionate, and often deadly struggle for a more perfect union.'' At a time when the Constitution's vulnerability is all too evident, and the risk of political violence all too real, We the People, with its shimmering prose and pioneering research, hints at the prospects for a better constitutional future, an amended America. Jill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper '41 Professor of American History at Harvard University and professor of law at Harvard Law School. She is also a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her many books include the international bestseller These Truths: A History of the United States. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Today's Headlines: Federal investigators finally arrested a suspect in the January 6th pipe bomb case — 30-year-old Brian Cole Jr. — though AG Pam Bondi says they still don't know the motive and didn't get any new tips. Meanwhile, pardoned J6 defendant Taylor Taranto popped up near Rep. Jamie Raskin's house, prompting another bump in security during what's starting to feel like a never-ending wave of threats. The DOJ is also trying to re-indict Letitia James and James Comey after their earlier cases collapsed thanks to the administration forgetting you actually need legitimate prosecutors. A new grand jury declined to indict James on mortgage fraud, and the GAO has now opened an investigation into FHFA director Bill Pulte — the guy reportedly cooking up the bogus mortgage probes against Trump enemies. Trump declared he's solved war again, announcing “peace” between Rwanda and militant forces in the DRC… despite fighting still happening. Over in the real war he can't magically fix, Putin rejected the latest Ukraine peace draft after chats with Kushner & Witkoff. And according to a leaked call, European leaders warned Zelensky that the U.S. might screw Ukraine over in negotiations. At home, the Supreme Court ruled 6–3 that Texas can use its aggressively gerrymandered congressional map for 2026 — a huge boost to Republicans. In”people who won't go away” news, Mike Lindell is now running for governor of Minnesota. And finally, the NFL announced new uniform field-safety standards for all stadiums by 2028, presumably so players stop shredding their knees to enhance player safety. Rep. In November 2025, newly released documents from the estate of Jeffrey Epstein revealed that Stacey Plaskett (D-U.S. Virgin Islands) exchanged messages with Epstein during a February 2019 congressional hearing involving Michael Cohen. The texts showed Epstein offering advice on questioning strategy (including prompting “RONA – keeper of the secrets,” a reference to Trump executive assistant Rhona Graff) and congratulating Plaskett's questioning with “Good work.” Plaskett's office acknowledged Epstein as a constituent (he owned islands in the territory) but denied that he was directing her actions. A GOP-led motion to censure Plaskett and strip her from the House Intelligence Committee failed by a narrow margin.During the floor debate on the resolution, Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) defended Plaskett by saying Republicans were effectively “arraigning a Democratic member for taking a phone call from her constituent, Jeffrey Epstein” during a hearing. He argued there was no specific House rule forbidding such contact and that the resolution was premature—“you don't get answers by rushing to judgment and turning the whole process upside-down,” he said. Republicans on Tuesday, led by Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., introduced a resolution to censure Plaskett for "inappropriate coordination with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein," which it says "reflects discreditably on the House of Representatives." Convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell may be serving a 20-year sentence — but according to a federal whistleblower and a new congressional letter, she's living more like a guest than an inmate. House Democrats led by Rep. Jamie Raskin are demanding answers from the Department of Justice after explosive allegations surfaced that Maxwell is receiving VIP treatment at Federal Prison Camp Bryan in Texas. Reports claim she's enjoying custom-delivered meals, after-hours private workouts, unmonitored computer access, and even direct help from the warden in preparing a sentence-commutation request to former President Donald Trump. Maxwell — who helped Jeffrey Epstein run his international sex-trafficking operation — was convicted in 2021 and transferred to the minimum-security Texas camp despite her sex-offender status. The whistleblower alleges her transfer followed a private interview with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, formerly Trump's attorney, raising questions about political influence, favoritism, and potential misuse of federal authority. In this episode, Tony Brueski exposes what's in the congressional letter, what the DOJ is being asked to explain, and why this could signal one of the most disturbing breakdowns in accountability yet. Is the justice system bending once again for the powerful? Has Ghislaine Maxwell found a way to turn her secrets into leverage? And what does this say about the ongoing rot inside the system that let Epstein operate for decades? All the facts, all the outrage — only on Hidden Killers. #HiddenKillers #GhislaineMaxwell #Epstein #Trump #FederalPrison #JamieRaskin #DOJ #TrueCrime #Whistleblower #TonyBrueski Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? In one of the most damning congressional letters in recent history, Rep. Jamie Raskin is demanding answers from Attorney General Pam Bondi after the Department of Justice quietly killed the ongoing investigation into Jeffrey Epstein's co-conspirators. Until January 2025, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York was running an active case—interviewing survivors, issuing subpoenas, and pursuing leads on Epstein's vast network of abusers and enablers. Nearly fifty women provided names, timelines, and evidence connecting at least twenty powerful men to Epstein's operation. Then, overnight, everything stopped. The Trump DOJ ordered the files transferred to Washington, D.C. By July, the FBI and DOJ had closed the case, issuing a one-page memo claiming there was “no evidence” to continue. Raskin calls it what it is: a gigantic cover-up. In his letter, he accuses the DOJ of abandoning survivors, firing prosecutors, dismissing credible witnesses, and refusing to investigate over $1.5 billion in suspicious Epstein-linked transactions flagged by major banks. Even worse, FBI Director Kash Patel told Congress the victims were “not credible”—the same women whose testimony convicted Ghislaine Maxwell beyond a reasonable doubt. This episode breaks down Raskin's explosive letter line by line—how the DOJ buried one of the largest sex-trafficking investigations in U.S. history, what it means for survivors, and what Congress plans to do next. Because if the government can erase the Epstein files this easily, who will they protect next?

In a shockingly brazen move, President Trump is demanding that the Justice Department pay him $230 million stemming from certain federal actions against him. Representative Jamie Raskin, the ranking Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, sent a scalding letter to the White House demanding all internal communications on this shakedown. What struck us was the letter's forceful indictment of Trump's corruption and criminality: It denounced Trump's “blatantly illegal and unconstitutional effort to steal $230 million from the American people” and his “outrageous and shocking” effort to “shake down” the Treasury, labeling this straight-up “theft.” There's much more, and it made critical legal points as well. We talked to the University of Michigan's Leah Litman, author of Lawless, a book on the Supreme Court. We discuss Raskin's letter, the legal nitty-gritty of Trump's heist, how it exemplifies the MAGA movement more broadly, and how the Supreme Court brought us to this dangerous moment.  Looking for More from the DSR Network?
