Omar Little, Jimmy McNulty, Stringer Bell, Snot Boogie. If you recognize these names, you are probably a fan of the HBO series The Wire. June 2022 marked 20 years since the series premiere. It ran for five seasons, following the lives of the cops, criminals, political players, and everyday folks caught up in Baltimore's often futile war on drugs. Many argue that The Wire is the best television show ever created and has earned praise for its realistic, humanizing, multi-dimensional portrayal of Black characters. But 20 years on, the conversation about policing in Black communities has changed. The deaths of Freddie Gray, George Floyd, and many others after encounters with police and the rise of the Black Lives Matter Movement have brought about more public scrutiny, debate, and criticism of the police.Listen to more Consider This at these links: Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, NPR.org, or anywhere you get your podcasts.

When does Bayern Munich re-start again? That was...terrible. Germany looked aimless and lacked energy and got the result that it deserved in a 2-0 loss to Colombia. The game looked like it mattered to the Colombians, while the Germans ambled around hoping that something good would happen (Hint: Nothing good happened). Let's find out if you are as bitter as me! As Stringer Bell once told Brother Mouzone and Omar Little, let's “get on with it”: A look at the starting lineup and a breakdown of the scoring. Where is the pride on this German team? Colombia was energetic, brash, and talking junk...and Germany withered under the stress of it all. Nothing is good...not the attack, nor the midfield, nor the defense. They are all terrible right now. Hansi Flick is assuredly in some danger. Where does it go from here? And why the players need to take some heat as well. “He knew how pain kept inside multiplies, and how pain shared subtracts,” writes podcast guest Jon Sternfeld in the opening bars of Michael K. Williams's haunting new posthumous memoir Scenes from My Life. Jon was midway through his work with the electrifying actor, known to television audiences for his career-defining turns as Omar Little in “The Wire” and Chalky White in “Boardwalk Empire,” as well as for his Emmy-nominated roles in “The Night Of” and “Lovecraft Country,” when Williams died in September 2021 from a drug overdose. It fell to Jon to complete the project on his own—an intimidating task the veteran ghostwriter was reluctant to take on at first. “I can't tell you how strange this is and has been,” he says. “When Mike first passed, I was just dealing with the shock and grief. I wasn't even thinking about things like deadlines or promotion. And now, I'm speaking about his legacy, and while I feel outmatched by the responsibility of it, I do accept it.” Join us as Jon Sternfeld reflects on his relationship with the late actor and activist, as well as on his other collaborations, including A Stone of Hope, with the noted residential care advocate Jim St. Germain; Crisis Point, with former U.S. senators Trent Lott and Tom Daschle; and the forthcoming Marked For Life, with attorney Isaac Wright Jr., who defends the wrongly accused in the same courtroom where he was sentenced to life in prison. This week, we talk about Felix Bautista's awesome new entrance featuring the Omar Little whistle from The Wire, Paul missing a post-rain delay comeback because he has responsibilities, GM Mike Elias and Assistant GM Sig Mejdal hanging out in the seating bowl with fans, and Paul's latest article on Eutaw Street Report. We also take some questions from listeners, Ryan regrettably brings up DJ Stewart, and the Orioles tie the Rays for the third Wild Card spot right before we sign off.
The Wire created one of the most complex characters in the history of television in Omar Little, played by the late Michael Kenneth Williams. Casting director Alexa Fogel recalls what made her consider Williams for the role, and Ed Burns remembers his initial doubts and how Williams extinguished them when the cameras rolled. Idris Elba, Andre Royo, JD Williams, Wendell Pierce, Hassan Johnson, Domenick Lombardozzi, Clarke Peters, Karen Thorson and Jermaine Crawford also join The Wire at 20 to talk about the special type of person Williams was, his exceptional talent, their friendships with him, and how his performance added new depth to discussions of masculinity. Rest in peace, Michael Kenneth Williams. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Not every actor is lucky enough to earn themselves a role like Omar Little – the shotgun-wielding and wildly charismatic stick-up artist who stole every scene he was a part of in HBO's “The Wire”. Of course, no character, regardless of how cool they are, is worth anything without a talented actor -- and in that regard, it always seemed like Michael K Williams was born to play this part. The legend of Omar would practically become inseparable from the man who brought him to life, but Williams still managed to avoid the pitfall that so many other talented actors have fallen into when portraying a character with such a strong orbit. Simply put, Williams was too magnetic to ever be type-cast. Yes, he played one of the best characters in television history, but in the end, his career was about a lot more than that – which is why when news broke about his death this past Labor Day, everyone who had ever been touched by the man's gifts took a moment to stop and reflect on what he meant to all of us.
“But the game is out there, and it's either play or get played” Michael K. Williams was one of the great small screen actors of his time. And yet, even with characters as compelling as the legendary Omar Little, Chalky White, Bobby McCray and Montrose Freeman on his resume, he was so much more. The pod took to the mics to talk about the loss of a man who redefined black masculinity for an entire generation of men, while becoming an icon (05:27). In the rest of this episode we talk music. Alahna, Angelo, Dan and Dom run through their projects of the year so far (35:24) and inevitably get into Donda v Certified Lover Boy (42:10). Like. Share. Subscribe.
Actor Michael K. Williams died earlier this month. He was 54 years old. He was best known for playing Omar Little on The Wire. Michael began his career in entertainment first as a dancer in New York, then an actor with a handful of walk-on credits. By the time he auditioned for The Wire he was in his mid-30s. When Jesse Thorn talked with him in 2016, he was starring in a show called Hap and Leonard. When we heard the news about Williams' passing, we went into the archives to listen back to our conversation. There's some stuff you might've heard in the past, a lot of stuff you haven't.
On this episode, we talk relationships with parents, Andre 3000's verse on Kanye's song, Chloe's fussiness, football being back, and of course, bingeables. We also give flowers to one of the greatest artists of all time, Michael K. Williams (best known as Omar Little from the Wire). Michael K. Williams knows that a lot of people consider his character, Omar Little, to be the best character on The Wire. But he has a different opinion about the show's best character. Michael tells Marc about how he brought his struggles as an addict to his performance, how he relapsed while making the show, and how the cast gave him the support he needed to get clean. They also talk about Michael's scar and how it helped him land his first acting job, why he loves Rachael Ray so much, and why his role in the movie Body Brokers was so personal to him.
