"A lot of customers are very concerned about their carbon footprint."For all the challenges faced by the beer industry, it's one that continues to forge ahead in many areas, not least when it comes to sustainability.Whether the focus is powering breweries, recycling or reusing ingredients, supporting organic and regenerative farming practices, or creating new and innovative ways of cutting waste, the brewing industry and those with which it shares a symbiotic relationship are often hotbeds for fostering sustainable practices. It's an area we've covered extensively on The Crafty Pint and, in this episode of our podcast, Craig Williams brings together a panel of pioneers from different businesses helping drive industries in a more eco-friendly direction. He's joined by George Wade, co-founder of UK-based Zevero, which helps breweries calculate their carbon emissions, Tom Field, founder of Sydney-based Bearhug Pallet Wraps, and Jonathon Buntz, from Ecogrip, producer of 100 percent Australian-owned and manufactured recycled plastic can holders. As well as exploring the genesis for each of their businesses and how they're helping customers operate in a more sustainable manner, they discuss the benefits to brewers, the challenges of persuading more businesses to implement new sustainability measures in tough economic times, and how business owners can take their first steps in this direction.Prior to the panel discussion, Craig is joined by James at Moffat Beach Brewing's Caloundra Production House (where they'd recorded a future show) to look back at another big week in beer – and that was before the news about Fox Friday's voluntary administration broke. The Akasha-Wayward unification and rebirth of Molly Rose from liquidation, plus a recent post by Phil Cook on his Beer Diary site, spark a discussion about independence, its meaning and relevance, while Craig offers insight on Steve Jeffares' takeover of the former Deeds Brewing site, after working with him on GABS for four years. We pump up the launch of the Pint of Origin program ahead of the festival's return on May 9, and in the middle of the show shout out the latest winners in the Have You Done A Rallings? campaign celebrating good beer citizens – nominate yours here.Start of segments: 17:12 – Sustainability Panel Part 1 34:12 – Have You Done A Rallings Winners 38:49 – Sustainability Panel Part 2Other relevant links Zevero's Starter Sustainability Kit For Brewers Bearhug Pallet Wraps Ecogrip Nominate a Brewery of the MonthTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.NB We mention a travel article on Québec in the intro, but publication has been pushed back due to the breaking news regarding Fox Friday.

In this episode, we delve into the captivating journey of Steve Jeffares, a filmmaker turned craft beer pioneer. Steve's story begins with a pivotal moment in 2000, when he experienced a beer revelation while living in Los Angeles. Upon returning to Melbourne, he, along with Guy Greenstone and Justin Joiner, co-founded The Local Taphouse in Melbourne and Sydney. These pubs not only introduced Australians to a new level of craft beer appreciation but also laid the foundation for what would later become the renowned GABS festival (Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular). From these humble beginnings, GABS has evolved into Australasia's premier beer festival, attracting over 55,000 enthusiasts annually across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, and Auckland. Inspired by a year in New York City, Steve ventured into brewing, co-founding Stomping Ground Brewing Co in 2016. With its popular Beer Halls, Stomping Ground has revitalised Collingwood as a hub for independent brewing, harking back to the suburb's rich brewing history. In this episode, we explore Steve Jeffares' journey from filmmaker to beer visionary, tracing the evolution of craft beer culture in Australia and the impact of initiatives like The Local Taphouse and GABS festival. Join us as we raise a glass to the spirit of innovation and community that defines Stomping Ground Brewing Co and its quest to make great beer accessible to all.
With the size and importance that the GABS Hottest 100 occupies in the craft beer scene, we caught of with one of the poll's founders, Steve Jeffares, to hear where it all came and how it got started. In Malachi 3:10 God says to us He will "open the windows of heaven and pour out a blessing so great you won't have enough room to take it all in." Wow!In this message of the Windows of Heaven series Steve Jeffares looks at how Tithing defeats the Giants in our lives. He also takes time to share about the report God gives over our lives versus the report we may receive from others, and on the pathways we go down when we choose our own wisdom over the wisdom of God.Message Referenced:ZION at Home | The Middle | Ps Steve Jeffares - https://youtu.be/5ZUyuYnC_zc

Ep 137 - A neighbourhood brewery bringing people across Melbourne together over a great beer with Justin Joiner from Stomping Ground Brewing Justin Joiner is a hospitality professional with more than 20 years of venue management experience here and in the UK, working in a wide range of businesses from fine dining to bars and pubs. He has been involved in the Australian craft beer industry since managing the first James Squire Brewhouse in the early 2000s in Melbourne. He was the venue manager of Melbourne's pioneering craft beer venue, The Local Taphouse for its first 8 years, and operations manager of GABS Beer, Cider and Food Festival before partnering with Steve Jeffares and Guy Greenstone to establish Stomping Ground Brewing Co in 2016. Justin's role within Stomping Ground Brewing Co includes overseeing venue operations, people & culture and external events and activations. In this podcast we talk about when Justin first fell in love with craft beer, how he and the Stomping Ground team supported their workers in 2020, how the range evolves and stays different, and their new facility to open up this year in Moorabbin in Melbourne's southern suburbs. Even if you aren't a craft beer drinker you will absolutely love this podcast and the generosity and humbleness that Justin projects. We hear from Steve and Guy, the two founders of GABS, the Local Taphouse, and co-founders of Stomping Ground. They tell us the story of GABS, and why they decided now was a good time to sell and move on.

This weeks letter of the week is from Jen S. Hi Matt and Prof! I enjoyed your discussion in episode 201 about strategies for listing (or not listing) beers in the Hottest 100. A few of my favourite beers from 2018 were seasonal limited releases. And although they were excellent, I knew they didn't have the distribution to get anywhere near the top 10. As a fan of facts and figures, I'd also love to see more voting stats! Ex. the total number of votes going to a brewery versus a specific beer, or how a local brewery with limited distribution ranked within their state. Here's hoping you can convince Steve Jeffares to work on this ‘holiday project'. The people want to know!

In part 2 we look at what beers Steve and Guy consider the most influential over the last 10 years, we look at the origins and the evolutions of the Hottest 100, what it means on the beer landscape, the early days of the Great Australian Beer Spectapular and how it morphed into the GABS festival, how that has morphed and grown and what they have learned along the way.
Ten years ago the Local Taphouse opened and quickly became a benchmark for what a great beer bar should be. Over the last 10 years founders Steve Jeffares and Guy Greenstone have continued to evolve and innovate and, in Hottest 100 and GABS, have created some of the biggest things on the craft beer calendar. They have also had a few misses and over the next 90 minutes you will hear them discuss their successes and failures with great insight and honesty. We have split the interview up into three parts that break nicely into half hour segments looking at The Local Taphouse, GABS and more recently Stomping Ground. In this first episode we look at how they discovered beer and what inspired their interest, how they met, the inspiration for the Local Taphouse and what they have learned - and continue to learn - along the way. Enjoy the conversation.
The third and the final part of our conversation with Steve Jeffares and Guy Greenstone, founder of The Local Taphouse, GABS and the Hottest 100, amongst other things. We start this part finishing off finding out about the growth of GABS from the Local Taphouse to the Royal Exhibition Building. We then learn about the decision to open the Stomping Ground brewery and their key staff Ashur Hall and Matt Marinich. With their business relationship being so long and involved, I also ask these two different personalities how they work together successfully and what they have learned in their time together and what's next. It's a great finish to this conversation series with Guy and Steve.

Welcome to a special podcast from the Australian Brews News team. Thanks to Bintani, we ran a live broadcast of the last two hours of the GABS Hottest 100 craft beers of 2017. We broadcast live from Balter, who ended up being named #1 in the poll. We chose Balter early in the voting process, well before the results were known, which turned out well for the show. While we managed to keep the show pretty on track despite a number of planned and unplanned guests dropping by the studio, good order was lost a little towards the end once the winner had been announced. We were very surprised to have Mick Fanning and then Joel Parkinson drop by to join us, Joel having raced in having left a wedding to celebrate with the team at Balter. Despite a few occasional rough edges, the podcast does capture the excitement of the countdown, the surprise as the results were announced and also how important the GABS Hottest 100 has come to be to the Australian beer industry. Don't let any brewer try and tell you that they don't care about the results. We would like to thank Balter for their generosity in making the boardroom available, and for the time they gave us especially as it became clear that we were in for an exciting finish. We'd also like to thank our co-hosts Kerry Claydon and Steve ‘Hendo' Henderson for joining us for the broadcast. Thanks also to our guests: Balter's Scott Hargrave, who - as you will hear - was so generous with his time we had to shoo out the door so he could actually celebrate the result rather than be stuck in the studio Stone & Wood's Jamie Cook who happened to be on the coast and made the effort to join us in the studio and happened to be there as the final results were announced. Pirate Life's Michael Cameron who joined us from a very hot carpark in South Australia Feral's Brendan Varis who called in from WA Dave Padden who accepted our call while he was pulled over on a highway. And also to Steve Jeffares, one of the founder of the Hottest 100 and the GABS Festival and Phil Meddings from Bintani, both of whom had their interviews put on hold as we were happily gatecrashed by a couple of excited world champion surfers. Finally, thank you to Bintani - who will bring the right ingredients to your brewery, just as they do with Balter - for sponsoring the show. We genuinely could not have done it without them.

This week we speak to Steve Jeffares, all about the GABS Hottest 100 beer poll. The annual poll gets increasing amount of attention and criticism and in our chat we cover everything. Things such as having too many pale ales at the top, beers no one has ever tried landing in the list, and the "Change the Date" campaign are all discussed.. In addition, Steve updated us about Stomping Ground as well as their support of Midsumma festival and their mentoring program for LGBTQIA+ artists. It's a rollercoaster of a show! Inebriation Nation Episode 18
This week Dave and I get censored by our producer; then have a wonderful chat with Steve from the Local Taphouse about Good Beer Week and the GABS festival here in Melbourne. We also discuss a range of interesting things from steak stuffed with oysters to classic arcade games, and a lot of beer inbetween
It's great to be back with Pete and in this episode we record live at the Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular. While Pete was busy hosting the Craft Beer College, Matt caught up with a range of brewers and beer identities to get their thoughts on Good Beer Week, GABS and life in general. Apologies in advance for the sound quality, this was recorded on the floor at GABS,. Apologies too for the repetitiveness of the intros to the guests and other things...we're learning as we go as you know. Our guests are: Ross Jurisich (Stone & Wood) Dave Bonighton (Mountain Goat) Jade Flavell (The Wheatsheaf, Adelaide) Jasper Cuppaidge (Camden Town Brewery, London) Andy Scade (Little Creatures) Thanks to the Steve Jeffares & Guy Greenstone from The Local Taphouse, directors of The Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular for hosting us at GABS and letting us set up shop to record the interviews.
The gremlins hit the recording this week and a great interview with Jade Flavell from the Wheatsheaf and Steve Jeffares from the Local Taphouse was ruined. Rather than go without a podcast, we have repackaged a 2010 interview with Greg Koch from Stone Brewing explaining why he is passionate in trying to stop the grey importing of his beer. This interview created quite a storm when we first played it in November 2010 and many of our readers may not have heard it before. The story is relevant this week because of a story by Sam Fletcher that takes a look at Platinum Liquor, a favourite craft beer store in the tough Sydney market, but one that also proudly boasts of selling grey import beers, including Stone. Anyway, listen to Greg Koch and make up your own mind about the practice. Next week we will be back with our regular show. As always, for show notes and links head on over to Australian Brews News.
