What does it take to become a musical chameleon who commands respect across diverse genres? Daniel Kimbro delivers a masterclass in musical versatility on this episode of Chewing the Gristle. From his beginnings in a family folk band called Mountain Soul to his current status as bassist for Jerry Douglas and session player on Eric Clapton records, Daniel shares the winding path that shaped his musical identity. With disarming honesty, he reveals how growing up surrounded by Stanley Brothers, Sting, and classical music created the perfect foundation for a career that refuses categorization.Daniel takes us deep into the heart of Appalachian musical traditions, particularly the fascinating world of murder ballads – those deceptively cheerful melodies paired with dark narratives. His own songwriting draws from this tradition, including "Loyston," a haunting tale about a town submerged underwater when the Tennessee Valley Authority built dams across the region. The conversation explores how these songs balance historical reality with creative embellishment, creating something both authentic and original.Whether you're a musician seeking to diversify your influences or simply curious about the connections between bluegrass, jazz, and everything in between, this conversation offers rich insights into finding your authentic voice while honoring musical traditions. Check out Daniel's music and keep an eye out for The Woodshed Guitar Experience, where he serves as music director alongside world-class guitarists sharing knowledge in an unusually accessible environment.

Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 535 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Nothing but a good time, how pedals work, and a skateboarding legend Richard has been breadboarding pedals with some success and he is keen to talk to the guys about his attempts at building a modified LPB1 booster pedal. Blake struggles to stay awake. Brian talks us through his modification and talks a little bit about this classic boost circuit and this turns into a little bit of a primer for guitar effects in general. Blake has been roleplaying and it takes the guys buy surprise so they go off on a tangent into the world of robots before Brian tells us of his gaming tactics. Richard insults him before they discuss a documentary about 1980s hair metal that involves ridiculous meat based antics. He also met one of his heroes and saw some live music which wasn't related to Pink Floyd and asks the question - who is the greatest Female Telecaster player of all time? SNL made a sketch about Oasis and it did not go down well. Meanwhile the guys have been lusting over the Greg Koch "Koch Ness Monster" pedalboard and Brian finds inspiration from Robert Keeley. This flows smoothly into a conversation about compressor pedals, feed-forward designs, and the EGO 76. Meanwhile Richard has been blown away by an early pioneer of delay effects. Davey and Greg share our personal connections to Rory's Celtic blues-rock, a sound that rattled thier own musical frameworks to the core. From the electric rush of touring with Rory's former comrades to the challenges of juggling the touring life with family responsibilities, we unearth the raw emotional tapestry that defines the musician's life. And for those who've ever wondered about the alchemy of bands, we dissect the irreplaceable magic that develops within groups who've weathered the road's trials together. Finally, we crank the amp to eleven as we trade tales of our most treasured axes — including Greg's '66 Telecaster that's more family heirloom than guitar — and reminisce about the raucous heyday of rock and roll attitude. From Hendrix's legendary coolness to the visceral thrill of loud, unapologetic concerts, we explore how the echoes of those live-wire performances still inform our music today. So join us, turn up the volume, and let every chord strike resonate with the storied past and vibrant present of rock, blues, and everything in between.1:33 - Life in Chicago, Davy's new acoustic album, and the simplicity of performing by oneself8:05 - The glory and mystery of Robert Johnson13:10 - One cannot deny the influential power of Eric Clapton17:26 - Davy affiliation w/ Rory Gallagher, and similarities to Roy Buchanan24:58 - Keeping busy in 2024, and the importance of having a solid, cohesive (sober?) band34:59 - The importance of a great booking agent, a few words on opening bands, and what happens your band is loud AF51:12 - Davy's life as a performer53:18 - The Telecaster, a few vintage guitars, and the real power of Rock 'n RollFishman Dedicated to helping musicians achieve the truest sound possible whenever they plug-in. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for an all-new episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Richard makes some bold and outrageous claims about his fuzz pedal credentials having built exactly one pedal ever and has had some help from one of our supporters and tells us all about it before he and Brian have a genius business idea. Yes genius that is what i said. Blake enquires about the density of a key component and Richard has the geekiest thing he has ever owned. Brian has had a long weekend, a veritable blur of guitar activity, and he tells us all about the Woodshed Guitar experience. He hung with some of the finest players and effects minds in the business - and possibly trolled them all - and has an amazingly coincidental story about Brent Mason. It's fair to say a good time was had by all and somewhere out there there is footage of Brian in a hot jam. Brian also got to play the new PRS 'Telecaster' style guitar and he was surprised by his reaction. There has been some controversy in the guitar word related to a well known retailer / youtuber and their involvement with an amp company which the guys were surprised by as they all thought it was common knowledge. The guys look at the serious side but also can't help but see the funny side too. There's also an update on the Van Halen video we discussed last week. Adjusting trimpots, Indiana snow, Eric Johnson, The Metaverse, Bunking with Greg Koch, Yngwie...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! This episode is sponsored by the fine folk at Pickupmusic.com and Stringjoy.comThanks to all our supporters - you are awesome! We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.com Support the show
Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian, Blake, and Richard are here for a classic episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian's out of town, possibly making something that is classified for someone top secret, and so we've decided to re-run one of our classic episodes for you this week with one of our favorite guests of all time, Mr Greg Koch.If you are a member of our Patreon we did record an extra show for you to check out as a thank you for your, ahem, patronage. You can also join the executive producers and get a shout out every week in a random, and often hilarious* style! Greg has some signature pedals - including the Diabolical Gristle Tone Manipulator - so Brian asks a little bit about them and how they came to be before the inevitable conversation about food leads on to a little talk about Greg's journey to his current tea(coffee)-total state via Keith Moon's biography...There are some serious points raised when Greg raises his own unique personality traits and how they defined the beginning of his life - he speaks pretty candidly. Greg also gives some great advice about how to get started in the music business, what it takes, what it doesn't take, and how he made it through all of the pitfalls that were placed in his way. *Hilarity not guaranteedCheck Greg's website out and buy some cool merch:https://www.gregkoch.com/We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Merch and DIY mods:https://modyourownpedal.com/collections/booksFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.com-Support the show
