"A lot of customers are very concerned about their carbon footprint."For all the challenges faced by the beer industry, it's one that continues to forge ahead in many areas, not least when it comes to sustainability.Whether the focus is powering breweries, recycling or reusing ingredients, supporting organic and regenerative farming practices, or creating new and innovative ways of cutting waste, the brewing industry and those with which it shares a symbiotic relationship are often hotbeds for fostering sustainable practices. It's an area we've covered extensively on The Crafty Pint and, in this episode of our podcast, Craig Williams brings together a panel of pioneers from different businesses helping drive industries in a more eco-friendly direction. He's joined by George Wade, co-founder of UK-based Zevero, which helps breweries calculate their carbon emissions, Tom Field, founder of Sydney-based Bearhug Pallet Wraps, and Jonathon Buntz, from Ecogrip, producer of 100 percent Australian-owned and manufactured recycled plastic can holders. As well as exploring the genesis for each of their businesses and how they're helping customers operate in a more sustainable manner, they discuss the benefits to brewers, the challenges of persuading more businesses to implement new sustainability measures in tough economic times, and how business owners can take their first steps in this direction.Prior to the panel discussion, Craig is joined by James at Moffat Beach Brewing's Caloundra Production House (where they'd recorded a future show) to look back at another big week in beer – and that was before the news about Fox Friday's voluntary administration broke. The Akasha-Wayward unification and rebirth of Molly Rose from liquidation, plus a recent post by Phil Cook on his Beer Diary site, spark a discussion about independence, its meaning and relevance, while Craig offers insight on Steve Jeffares' takeover of the former Deeds Brewing site, after working with him on GABS for four years. We pump up the launch of the Pint of Origin program ahead of the festival's return on May 9, and in the middle of the show shout out the latest winners in the Have You Done A Rallings? campaign celebrating good beer citizens – nominate yours here.Start of segments: 17:12 – Sustainability Panel Part 1 34:12 – Have You Done A Rallings Winners 38:49 – Sustainability Panel Part 2Other relevant links Zevero's Starter Sustainability Kit For Brewers Bearhug Pallet Wraps Ecogrip Nominate a Brewery of the MonthTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.NB We mention a travel article on Québec in the intro, but publication has been pushed back due to the breaking news regarding Fox Friday.

"I think we got tagged early on as a hype brewery. We're not afraid to say that we were."In the words of Willie Nelson, we're on the road again for this episode – or at least we were – as our chat with James McCall and Carla Naismith of Shapeshifter Brewing is the last of the shows we recorded in Adelaide at the tail end of 2024.James founded the brewery with Kevin Mulcahy after the pair met on a brewing course run by SA legend Stephen Nelsen. They launched their first beers before opening a brewery and quickly made a name for themselves on the back of some banging oat cream IPAs.These days they brew and welcome punters to their brewpub home in Findon – part of a brewery circuit in Adelaide's west – and continue to experiment with new styles, techniques, and ingredients, with a particular fondness for hops.As well as delving into their stories and the evolution of Shapeshifter, we discuss some of the issues still impacting many in the beer and hospitality negatively, as well as steps that can be taken to make it a more inclusive and welcoming industry.Prior to the main interview, Will and James discuss the week's news, including Sydney Brewery's acquisition of Rocks Brewing from liquidators, the inspiring tale of the mates behind Auslan Beers, and the continuing mainstream media coverage of the unfair excise tax system and its impact on brewers, venues, retailers and drinkers alike.Funnily enough, it was podcast regular Craig Williams – back here with Hendo for some more Rockstar Brewer Academy advice – who landed on the TV news and Sunrise off the back of a viral video he shot about beer's “fifth ingredient” with his Blackflag Brewing hat on.Don't forget to get your nominations in for the Bluestone Yeast Brewery of the Month and, if you're in Sydney on February 26, James is hosting an Ale Trail Blind Tasting Face-Off at Hopsters. J. Craig Williams believes empathy is an important quality to be a trial lawyer. It's served him in his profession, and it's a tool he has also been using as an author trying to get into the minds of people from past eras. In How Would You Decide? 10 Famous Trials That Changed History, Book One, Williams examines cases and trials from history through the lens of a modern trial lawyer. He uses the accounts of the historical proceedings to illustrate current principles of litigation and civil rights, and explains what each can tell us about the rule of law.  In this episode of The Modern Law Library, Williams tells the ABA Journal's Lee Rawles that empathy was key in trying to understand the people involved in events like the Salem Witch trials, and figuring out how injustices could be perpetrated. He realized there were parallels to be drawn between society in late-17th century Salem and American society today. The 10 trials featured in this first volume of How Would You Decide? are: The Trial of Jesus The Salem Witch Trials Boston Massacre Trial Civil War Tipping Point and Aftermath Trials (Dred Scott, John Brown, Plessy v. Ferguson) O.K. Corral Shootout Trial of Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday The Black Sox Trial The Scopes “Monkey Trial” The Lindy Chamberlain Trial The McMartin Preschool Trial The O.J. Simpson Murder Trial The case that most readers bring up when speaking with Williams is the Boston Massacre trial. Williams, who grew up in New England, says he was surprised to find during his research that there was much he hadn't known about the case himself. Founding Father and future president John Adams was the attorney who successfully defended the British soldiers who fired into the Massachusetts crowd, an extremely risky professional and social decision. Williams and Rawles discuss Adams's representation and what it meant for the establishment of the rule of law in the United States. Listeners might best know Williams from his Lawyer2Lawyer podcast, which he launched in 2005, making him a pioneer in legal podcasting. Since Williams was already familiar with audio production, How Would You Decide? was a natural fit for multimedia. He launched a companion website, 10FamousTrials.com, making available more of the source material he relied on to write the book. He also partnered with Legal Talk Network to release a miniseries podcast, which is currently in production. In Dispute covers one of the 10 trials each episode, featuring commentary and reenactments drawn from trial transcripts and historical documents. In this episode, Williams and Rawles discuss his research process, how he selected which trials to feature, and what might make it into Book Two. They also get into the holiday spirit by talking about The Sled, a Christmas story Williams and his wife wrote for their grandchildren.

Do You Bag-A Nut? Sweet Gum Ball Picker Review   In this episode Craig and Kevin review the Bag-A-Nut sweet gum ball picker. Kevin has several sweet gum trees in his yard and the number of balls they drop is a staggering amount. It winds up being a pretty big issue during certain times of the year, and this new picker is a game changer. If you've got sweet gum trees, you'll want to listen to this episode. Or, if you have nut orchards, this might be an episode that you'll want to listen to as well! Introduction: In this episode of the Homeowner Show, hosts Kevin Hackett and Craig Williams dive deep into the challenges of dealing with sweet gum trees and their pesky gumballs. As homeowners, they've faced the frustration of these spiky, stubborn balls clogging up their yards and causing issues with their lawn equipment. But fear not, they've discovered a game-changing solution that could be a lifesaver for fellow homeowners dealing with the same problem. The Sweet Gum Ball Dilemma: Sweet gum trees are known for their beautiful foliage and impressive shade, but their gumballs can be a real nightmare for homeowners. Kevin shares his personal experience with the issue, explaining how the gumballs would get caught in his zero-turn mower's belts, leading to costly repairs and downtime. The situation had become so problematic that he was willing to invest in a solution. The Baganut Solution: Enter Baganut, a company that has developed a unique tool specifically designed to tackle sweet gum balls and other troublesome nuts and fruits. Kevin discovered this product after extensive research and was impressed by its effectiveness. The Baganut picker is a simple yet ingenious device that uses a rolling wheel with tines to scoop up the gumballs and deposit them into a collection hopper. The Baganut Picker: Kevin walks us through the different models available from Baganut, ranging from a 12-inch push model to a 36-inch pull-behind option. The larger models even feature collapsible crates for easy disposal of the collected gumballs. The company's customer service and return policy were also noteworthy, with a 30-day guarantee on all products except the sweet gum ball picker, which they claim no one ever returns. The Benefits and Potential: Using the Baganut picker, Kevin was able to clear his entire yard of sweet gum balls in just a few hours, a task that would have been arduous and time-consuming without the tool. He also mentions the potential for his son to use the picker to earn some extra money by offering the service to neighbors with sweet gum trees. Conclusion: The Homeowner Show has once again provided a practical solution to a common homeowner's dilemma. The Baganut picker has proven to be a game-changer for Kevin, and it could be the answer for many other homeowners struggling with the nuisance of sweet gum balls. By sharing this innovative product, the hosts hope to empower their audience to tackle this challenge and reclaim their yards with ease. Dayton, Tennessee, catapulted into the national spotlight in 1925 after a young teacher challenged a state law banning the teaching of evolution, transforming the town into a chaotic carnival of ideas and fervent beliefs.  Re-live the spectacle as Clarence Darrow, a relentless advocate for scientific thought, squared off against William Jennings Bryan, the stalwart defender of religious tradition. Feel the tension as the courthouse brimmed with heated exchanges, each argument pushing the boundaries between faith and reason. Witness how Darrow's razor-sharp cross-examination exposed deep questions about literalism and learning, creating ripples that reverberated far beyond the courtroom.  Though Scopes was found guilty, the trial carved out a legacy of debate that echoes in America's dialogue on education and freedom to this day LINKS: Sign up for our newsletter so that you're the first to know when new episodes drop! The infamous cheating scandal from the 1919 World Series, between the Chicago White Sox and the Cincinnati Reds, broke America's belief in the purity and innocence of baseball. As the story slowly unfolded, it became filled with all the colorful characters you'd expect from 1920s America: baseball players with catchy nicknames, short-tempered gangsters/gamblers immaculately dressed in business pinstripe suits, newspaper reporters and radio broadcasters with flowery descriptions of the trial as if itself was a baseball game, and even New York mob boss Arnold Rothstein, who was alleged (but never proven …) to be the impetus of the scandal. Unfortunately, the Black Sox trial transcripts were lost long ago, requiring modern-day historians to rely on newspaper reports of trial testimony, which sometimes were sensationalized for their readers and at other times were directly contrary to one another. From this reality, admittedly many of the facts about the scandal we examine in this episode are (true to this show's title) In Dispute. In Episode 170 of The Business Development Podcast, host Kelly Kennedy sits down with Craig Williams, founder of A&M Abatement, to explore the often-overlooked dangers lurking in older homes and buildings: asbestos and hazardous materials. Craig shares his journey from environmental science to entrepreneurship, highlighting how he founded A&M Abatement to fill a critical gap in the industry. He dives into the technical details of asbestos abatement, explains the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, and offers practical advice for homeowners, business owners, and contractors working in buildings constructed before 1985.Craig also discusses the broader impacts of asbestos, including its history, why it was so commonly used in construction, and what legal obligations exist today for property owners and businesses. The episode sheds light on an important, yet niche, industry while emphasizing the importance of being proactive in identifying and addressing hazardous materials in buildings. This conversation is essential for anyone involved in renovation, construction, or property management, providing valuable insights into maintaining safety and compliance.Key Takeaways: 1. Asbestos was widely used in buildings up until the 1980s, making it common in older homes and structures.2. Inhaling asbestos fibers can cause diseases like asbestosis and mesothelioma, often developing decades after exposure.3. Asbestos becomes hazardous when it's friable, meaning it can crumble and release fibers into the air.4. Before renovating buildings older than 1985, testing for asbestos is essential to avoid exposure risks.5. Proper asbestos removal requires trained professionals and specialized equipment to ensure safety.6. Spraying wate during abatement helps prevent asbestos fibers from becoming airborne by making them heavier.7. Lead paint in older buildings poses neurological risks, particularly to children, and should be tested before renovation.8. Asbestos-contaminated materials must be disposed of correctly to prevent exposure to others and environmental harm.9. Employers must follow health and safety laws to protect workers from asbestos exposure during renovations or demolitions.10. Hiring environmental consultants ensures proper testing and safety measures before any renovation or demolition work.

In response to the growing number of citizen complaints and imprisonments, Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor William Phips appointed a man with no legal training to preside over the trials. More than a dozen poor decisions and questionable verdicts later, townspeople became all too familiar with death sentences by hanging. Wisconsin Democrats look to boost local journalism | Missouri Republicans cobble stupid ideas together | School voucher boosters need some extra help with math | Key Attorney General races in the 2024 electionsWisconsin Dems Propose Legislation To Support Journalismhttps://wisconsinexaminer.com/brief/democrats-propose-ways-of-bolstering-local-news/Amid widespread layoffs in the journalism industry and ongoing concerns about newsroom closures and consolidations, Wisconsin Democrats are proposing some ways of boosting the local journalism industry. A package of bills — coauthored by Reps. Jimmy Anderson (D-Fitchburg), Jodi Emerson (D-Eau Claire) and Sen. Mark Spreitzer (D-Beloit) — would create a tax credit for people who subscribe to local newspapers, a fellowship program to get individuals into the field, and a Civic Information Consortium Board that would award grants to local news.Rep Anderson said “Local journalism is essential to our democracy. It keeps voters informed and engaged on the issues that matter most to their communities, and local reporters also play an important role in keeping officials accountable to their constituents. But local news is dying.” “News deserts are disproportionately located in rural areas, low-income areas, and communities of color. The three bills in this package are designed to ensure that all Wisconsinites can access high quality, reliable local journalism.”The journalism fellowship program would be administered by the University of Wisconsin System. Under the program, a panel of UW journalism professors and industry experts would choose 25 fellows to match with participating newsrooms for a one-year fellowship. Participants, who would be required to hold a two- or four-year degree in journalism, media, communications or a similar program, would receive a $40,000 salary.Another bill would create a nonrefundable tax credit as a way of encouraging people to subscribe to their local newspaper. When subscribing to a qualifying local newspaper, taxpayers could receive a tax credit equal to 50% of the amount paid to subscribe. The credit would be limited to a maximum of $250 in each taxable year.Missouri Proposed Change On Initiative Petitions Creates An Electoral College Outcomehttps://missouriindependent.com/2024/02/05/as-few-as-1-in-5-voters-could-defeat-initiative-petitions-under-missouri-senate-proposal/BY: RUDI KELLER - FEBRUARY 5, 2024 10:00 AMAs few as 1 in 5 voters could defeat initiative petitions under Missouri Senate proposalThe legislation set for debate in the Senate would require a majority vote in 82 state House districts and a statewide majority to approve constitutional amendments  Called a concurrent majority, an analysis of voting patterns by The Independent shows that the change would make it possible for as few as 20% of voters to determine the outcome of statewide ballot measures.Tim Jones, state director of the Missouri Freedom Caucus, pushing the change, said “This to me is a very similar concept to the electoral college.”The proposal is taking on new urgency for GOP leaders because a proposal to overturn Missouri's abortion ban could be on the ballot in November. Republicans see changing the rules as the only way to defeat it.Opponents claim the idea undermines majority rule, which has determined the outcome of constitutional questions in Missouri since 1846.Chuck Hatfield, an attorney representing Protect Majority Rule, which is raising money for a possible campaign against the amendment said, “Their goal is to make sure that even when an overwhelming majority of Missourians overall support a measure, rural voters can still defeat it,”Democrats in the Senate, who have been content to let the GOP civil war play out without interfering, are “vehemently” opposed to any effort to change the current simple majority to pass ballot measuresRed State School Voucher Programs Need To Go Back To School For Basic Mathhttps://www.thenation.com/article/society/school-vouchers-red-state-budgets/JENNIFER C. BERKSHIRE and JACK SCHNEIDERFor GOP lawmakers who view public education as a quasi-socialist project, the gaping hole in state budgets left by subsidizing private school tuition is a feature, not a bug.In Arizona, taxpayers are now staring down a $400 million shortfall, with an even bigger bill coming due next year. How did the Grand Canyon State go from sitting on a huge cash reserve to facing a rising tide of red ink? Simple. Voucher proponents suggested that paying for private school tuition would cost taxpayers $65 million a year; but as it stands, the program is on track to cost roughly 15 times that. All told, Arizona taxpayers are likely to spend close to a billion dollars reimbursing the cost of tuition and luxury expenses—including ski resort passes, pianos, and theme park tickets—for families whose children were never enrolled in the public schools. It isn't just Arizona's problem. Over the past two years, multiple states have enacted universal or near-universal voucher programs that far exceed initial cost projections. In Iowa, Governor Kim Reynolds pushed an expansive voucher program that gives $7,500 to any Iowa family for private school tuition. But demand for the program among parents who already send their kids to private schools, most of which are religious, has far exceeded expectations. Now Iowans are on the hook for the tuition of 17,000 private school students—a bill that will total $345 million a year next year. The same story has unfolded in Ohio, Arkansas, West Virginia, and elsewhere. It wasn't just the price tag that voucher proponents were deceptive about—it was also the projected beneficiaries of such programs. Advocates promoted vouchers as a benefit for poor students, students with disabilities, and students in struggling schools. Yet the reality has looked very different. As The Wall Street Journal recently reported, the vast majority of parents taking advantage of these tuition coupons are those who already send their kids to private schools. Key State Level Attorney General Elections for 2024https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/articles/this-years-key-attorney-general-and-secretary-of-state-races/By Louis Jacobson 2024 State RacesThis year, there will be 17 elections for Secretary of State and Attorney General in states across the U.S., but only a few are on track to be competitive. Today we'll talk about the Attorney General races in North Carolina and Pennsylvania.North Carolina: Open seat (Josh Stein, D, is running for governor)In a hot election cycle in North Carolina with lots of competitive races and open seats, the AG contest could prove unusually compelling. It has been over a century since the state elected a Republican to this office, although this race could be exceedingly close—just as the last few contests have been. The two frontrunners for the open AG seat are both sitting members of Congress: Republican Dan Bishop and Democrat Jeff Jackson. Bishop is a favorite of the GOP's conservative wing, having been a member of the House Freedom Caucus and a thorn in the side of former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Jackson—who joined the AG race after effectively being drawn out of his seat in re-districting last year—has attracted a national following for his posts on TikTok. While Bishop appears to have a clear shot at the GOP nomination, Jackson must first win a March 5 primary against Durham County District Attorney Satana Deberry, and attorney and veteran Tim Dunn. Louis Jacobson at Sabato's Crystal Ball says if Jackson and Bishop do meet in November, the race could go either way and is a true toss-up.In Pennsylvania's AG election this year, Both party primaries are on track to be competitive. The Democrats have five credible candidates: former Auditor General Eugene DePasquale, former Bucks County Solicitor Joe Khan, former top Philadelphia public defender Keir Bradford-Grey, veteran and state Rep. Jared Solomon, and Jack Stollsteimer, the district attorney in populous Delaware County near Philadelphia. The Republicans have two: York County District Attorney Dave Sunday, who has been endorsed by the state party, and veteran and state Rep. Craig Williams. In the Democratic primary, DePasquale, as the only candidate from western Pennsylvania, and Bradford-Grey, as the only Black candidate, may have an edge in a contest where as little as 21% of the vote could be enough to win the nomination. On the GOP side, Sunday should have a modest edge. The general election should be highly competitive, and it could swing depending on the dynamics on the rest of the ballot, including how the competitive races for president and Senate play out. There has been some ticket-splitting in Pennsylvania in recent presidential cycles, though. In 2016, as Republicans won the presidential and Senate races, Democrats won the contests for Attorney General, Auditor, and Treasurer. In 2020, as Joe Biden flipped the state, Republicans took back the Auditor and Treasurer posts. If you're not registered to vote, get on it!
