It was a familiar old Easter Monday script for Hawkers, the boys falling to Geelong by seven points in what was a frustrating game overall. The perfect start to the season suddenly seems a distant memory, as the Hawks move to 4-2, hoping to recover their mojo at Marvel Stadium this weekend. “This country has been crippled in the way politicians handle affairs … Well, someone needs to step up at some point and have the courage to recognise that we are now at a breaking point.”Anyone paying attention to craft beer in Australia over the past decade will be aware of two things. One, that Hawkers have consistently put out some of the best beers of any brewery in the country over that period. And, two, that founder and outgoing CEO Mazen Hajjar is one of the sharpest and most outspoken commentators on the industry. Both were among the reasons we invited him to be a guest on the podcast: Hawkers turn ten this month while the beer and hospitality worlds are experiencing existential threats from multiple directions. Since we extended that invite late last year, he's found himself in the eye of the news too after merging his brewery with White Bay in Sydney to form Social Drinks Group. The move provided more ammunition for what was always going to be a fascinating, wide-ranging, and occasionally fiery chat – one in which we addressed the issue of excise tax and a lack of support from the Federal Government just days before it blew up again on the back of the latest bi-annual tax hike and accompanying comments and directives from the Treasurer and ACCC respectively. The latter part of the interview is where Mazen really builds up a head of steam, taking on not just excise tax but other hot topics, including the abandonment of indie brewers by the homebrand-hawking retail duopoly, tap contracts, the inequities of the country's various container deposit schemes, and the lack of support for local producers from the government. He also expresses hope, however, even as he acknowledges that much of the industry is at breaking point, while reflecting on his decade at the helm of Hawkers, lessons he brought with him from his home country of Lebanon, and educating drinkers through experimentation. He also takes us inside the merger with White Bay – how it came aboutand is their attempt to carve out a future in a much-changed landscape – while sharing his experience of going through voluntary administration, as well as his future plans.Prior to joining Mazen, there's a longer-than-usual intro as Will and James discuss the fallout from the most recent rise in excise tax, its coverage in the media, and how the calls for change seem to be coming from more quarters and getting ever louder in this election year.Hendo is back with more tips on brewing efficiently, and we look ahead to the reopening of Tiny Mountain in Townsville after the brewery was bought from Lion by a Queensland-based hospo group.Start of segments: 22:27 – Mazen Hajjar Part 1 50:00 – Rockstar Brewer Academy 55:34 – Mazen Hajjar Part 2Relevant links: Hawkers & White Bay Merge The Exploding Cost Of Brewing Beer IBA response to the Treasurer's comments on excise tax IBA's Save Indie Beer Campaign Tiny Mountain To Reopen The Crafty Pint's Brewery & Venue Directory Rockstar Brewer AcademyTo find out more about supporting the show or otherwise partnering with The Crafty Pint, contact craig@craftypint.com.
It's time to hit the road again after hosting the GABS Hottest 100 Countdown livestream as Will and James call into Noodledoof in Victoria's west.Founders Sam Rudolph and Alex Carr launched the brewpub and distillery with their partners in late 2019 – just before you-know-what hit – in Koroit, a small town a short drive inland from the western end of the Great Ocean Road.In the years since, they've gone on to create a genuinely distinctive operation in a region that was pretty much barren land for local craft beer before they came along. With Sam still making his way back from a beer festival in Melbourne on the day of our visit, we sat down with Alex to hear how the former homebrewing housemates from Adelaide ended up reuniting as brewers and distillers. We find out how they turned a former mechanics in the town's main street into a community hub, where the unique name comes from, and why they've been determined to create a brand like little else in Australia – certainly among breweries found so far from any major cities.Alex tells us about their mission to work with and celebrate local producers, foraging for native ingredients in the rich ecosystem of nearby Tower Hill whose Gunditjmara name, Koroitj, gives their adopted home its name, and creating unique spirits such as a wonderful potato vodka that pays homage to the Irish community that settled in the area in the mid-19th century. The show features great insights and inspiration for those looking to build a community around a regional brewery, and the rewards that can come from sticking to your beliefs. We also hear from Anne Gigney, founder and co-director of The Distillers Institute, ahead of March's IBD Convention in Hobart.Prior to the chat with Alex, we reflect briefly on this year's Hottest 100 results, the eye-catching merger between Hawkers and White Bay, and our feature on globe-trotting Aussie brewer Nick Galton-Fenzi.Start of segments: 10:54 – Alex Carr (part one) 30:16 – Ann Gigney 38:11 – Alex Carr (part two)Relevant links: Noodledoof GABS H100 of 2024 Livestream GABS H100 of 2024: Analysis Hawkers & White Bay Merge Aussie Exports: Nick Galton-Fenzi Have You Done A Rallings? The fellas are back, kicking things off with some quick banter on sports before Dr. Mzee takes center stage to share his reflections on growth through the past year. They take a moment to express thoughts and prayers for the victims of the devastating wildfires in LA. The discussion transitions into a deep dive on accountability, questioning why political leaders and public figures seem to receive the lion's share of attention during calamities. On the local front, they touch on the state's latest efforts to relocate hawkers from Nairobi's bustling streets. Staying on the political track, they tackle the perennial issue of corruption, exploring its root causes like greed, prejudice, selfishness, and more. Uncle Barry takes us on a quest to uncover Kenya's rich and untold history, revisiting the nation's founding days and beyond. The episode wraps up with a look ahead as they share individual plans and resolutions for the new year. And more!

Cows ‘N Cabs has raised more than $2 million for Central Florida charities since it got its start in 2011. The event was co-founded by David Larue, Executive Vice President at ABC Fine Wine & Spirits, and John Rivers, the owner of 4 Rivers restaurant group. “My wife and I were talking about how to use, like my ABC platform, because we have so many great contacts and the liquor business, and we've raised so much money for other things — but how to create something on our own? So we figured out, actually saw something on the Food Network called Pigs ‘N Pinot. I'm like, ‘Well, that is really cool,'” Larue said. Larue had drinks covered, but he did not have the restaurant contacts he would need for the event. That's when he was able to pull on Rivers and his vast network in Central Florida's dining scene. The pair wanted this event to be different from a typical charity event, more casual. “We decided, let's, let's try to figure out if you are the person walking into an event and you're by yourself. Would you have a great time being there for four hours by yourself? And so we kind of started with that mentality,” Larue said. They settled on a Western theme, which the regular attendees have embraced. “We got a guy that comes with, like, an inflatable cow costume. A lot of people just with cowboy hats, which we've actually given away a bunch of cowboy hats the last couple of years through one of our supplier partners. They've given away like, 700 hats,” Larue said. Amid the sea of cowboy hats, chefs from 38 restaurants will be offering up bites and snacks to the hungry attendees. “I would say 25 of the restaurants are coming back because they just love it so much and then we've got a couple of new ones,” Larue said. The participating restaurants include Kaya, Hawkers, The Monroe, Otto's High Dive, Bar Kada and Black Rooster Taqueria, among others. Of course, the food may draw people in, but the charities helped by the event are the star of the show. “It's so much fun just to be able to make that list (of charities) and, more importantly, deliver the checks,” Larue said. The charities helped by the event include 4 Roots Farm, After-School All-Stars, Central Florida Diaper Bank and Harbor House. Cows ‘n Cabs is set to take place in Winter Park on Nov. 9. Tickets are available now. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, Larue talks more about the growth of Cow ‘n Cabs and its expansion with a new event, Burgers.Bubbles.Beer, which is taking place on Nov. 7. He also shares the family history behind ABC Fine Wine & Spirits. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Here we are, Hawkers, back with Round Ten Recap when maybe we all we want to do is run and hide, and ignore what was a heartbreaking loss to Port Adelaide. Still, there were positives aplenty to take from the game, including Ethan Phillips' debut and a career-best five-goal haul from Blake Hardwick. Two young hawkers chat about the profession in this era of high inflation - how to maintain profitability while still serving that affordable meal. Synopsis: Every second and fourth Monday of the month, The Straits Times takes a hard look at social issues of the day with guests. The cost of living has gotten more expensive in the last two years. Inflation measured by a basket of consumer goods was 4.8 per cent higher in 2023 than 2022, more than in 2021 when the price increase was at 2.3 per cent. For young hawkers who also have their families to care for, maintaining a profit margin while resisting raising prices, can be challenging. Cost differences between running a stall in private coffee shops vis a vis hawker centres managed by NEA, could make a stark difference in profitability, according to two hawkers. In this episode,ST podcast assistant editor Lynda Hong speaks with Jeevan Ananthan, 32, who sells Li Na noodles - bak chor mee - in three stalls in coffee shops with a central kitchen. Also in the studio is Cornelius Tan, 38, vice-chairman of the Chinatown Complex Hawker association. He is also a second-generation hawker of Chai Wee Cuttlefish stall in a hawker centre managed by the NEA. They also talk about how the government subsidy waives the 0.5 per cent transaction fee that stallholders will have to pay for each digital transaction – those made via QR code payments under the Singapore Quick Response Code (SGQR) platform. The new subsidy window, under the Hawkers Go Digital initiative to spur more merchants to digitalise, continues until Dec 31, 2024 – the second time it has been extended. It was initially extended to the end of 2023 to support stallholders during the Covid-19 pandemic. Highlights (click/tap above): 7:34 “Let hawkers increase prices without guilt”? How rentals in hawker centres managed by NEA are charged differently from private coffee shops and food courts 13:20 Juggling manpower costs: Hiring Singaporeans and Permanent Residents (PRs) 15:19 Is there "greed" when it comes to rent in private coffee shops and food courts? 16:13 Why the SGQR unified payment code method has helped many hawkers survive lately 17:30 Jeevan's and Cornelius' journey from the corporate world to the hawker profession; did their university degrees help in current hawker profession? 24:32 Overseas ventures: How will the Lina Noodles empire strike out next?26:01 Advice for young and aspiring hawkers or “hawkerpreneurs” Produced by: Lynda Hong (lyndahong@sph.com.sg), Ernest Luis and Hadyu Rahim Edited by: Hadyu Rahim Follow In Your Opinion Podcast here and rate us: Channel: https://str.sg/w7Qt Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/wukb Spotify: https://str.sg/w7sV SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Read ST's Opinion section: https://str.sg/w7sH --- Discover more ST podcast channels: COE Watch: https://str.sg/iTtE In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad Music Lab: https://str.sg/w9TX Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts --- Special edition series: True Crimes Of Asia (6 eps): https://str.sg/i44T The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia (5 eps): https://str.sg/wuZ2 Invisible Asia (9 eps): https://str.sg/wuZn Stop Scams (10 eps): https://str.sg/wuZB Singapore's War On Covid (5 eps): https://str.sg/wuJa --- Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts! #inyouropinionSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Hawks are on the run with Harrison Ford as fugitives. Guts is fighting a beautiful ribbon dancer from the middle east at a tournament. Judeau is feeding Casca sleepy-ass soup so she gets some rest; and Guts saves his old pals at just the right time and the exact day that the Hawkers received intel about where Griffith has been this whole time! Hawkers peddling their wares on an Auckland road famous for its Christmas lights seemed undeterred by the council's threats to shut them down. Residents of Franklin Road in Ponsonby have complained this week after hawkers selling food, toys, and accessories refused to leave when asked. But around half a dozen turned out again Thursday night. Franklin Road resident Roscoe Thorby started the light show around 30 years ago. Thorby spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.

Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
Since the Middle Ages, food has always been sold on the streets of London. Women and men, boys and girls, have seemingly sold everything that can be eaten, from shellfish and fried fish, to baked potatoes and baked pies, to handfuls of fruit and cups of milk. They were far from being the most respectable members of London's society, either in the late sixteenth century, the late nineteenth century, or any of the periods in between. Yet they were absolutely an absolutely vital link in feeding the growing population, part of a chain that extended from the coasts, ports, the gardens of Kent and Surrey, and from suburban cows, until finishing its journey in a customers mouth. In his new book Street Food: Hawkers and the History of London, Charlie Taverner chronicles the daily life of the street vendors over three centuries, following them as they make their way with baskets and carts through the urban landscape. This enables him to not only reimagine a vital part of London's history, but to reconsider the process of urbanization and modernization. Charlie Taverner is a Research Fellow at Trinity College, Dublin. A social historian of cities and food, he was in a previous life a business and agricultural journalist. For Further Investigation Islington: no cows now present For rabbits traveling to London, and much more besides This is a conversation about urban history, and many other things besides. For another conversation which describes the life of the city in a very different way, listen to Episode 133: Mad Dogs and Other New Yorkers, or, Rabies in the City David Edgerton, The Shock of the Old: Technology and Global History since 1900 Transcript Al: Charlie Taverner, welcome to Historically Thinking. Charlie: Fabulous to be here. Thank you very much. Al: So I guess we'll talk later about how being a business and agricultural journalist and influenced this book. Imagine I could see it sort of the experience and fingerprints all over it. But this is a book about it's about a business, it's about a centuries of a sort of type of business and one intimately [00:02:00] connected with agriculture, but we're not gonna talk about that yet. As you make clear, the sources of who Hawkers were are very iffy. They're based on middle class or gentlemen. Taking long walks through the city, making observations, which may or may not be valid, or they're by court cases or whatever. So I think there's the idea, we have the, we should talk about the prototypical vision of the London Fish Wife, which is that seems to be the, that is the vision of the Hawker. But then going from the fish wife to who were they really, are they the lowest, they can't be the lowest of the lower class, but where are they? Do they fit into the new middling type in the 16th century? Where, who are they? Where do they come from? Charlie: Yeah, I think I talk about in the book, one of the sections I term all sorts of Londoners. And that's because Hawkers were a really diverse bunch of people. Many of them were very [00:03:00] poor. Really scraping by doing other forms of menial work. Things like sweeping the streets, collecting old bones and rubbish. Or later on holding up sandwich boards and signs on the streets, basic forms of work. And others were much closer to the kind of shopkeepers people who had a bit more respectability, respectability about them. And a range of complex kind of skills in trades like retail. So you've got a, you've got a wide range of abilities and skill within there. And what that means is you've got people kind of work doing this work very occasionally, and you've got people just doing this work kind of fulltime. So the job itself can be very different. And it meant also that in there were very different sorts of people involved in the street trade. And one of the big transitions we see is around the gender of street sellers. So you start off. Early in the early in the period that I'm interested in the late...
Talk about eyes on the pick one prize! Resting their equal leading goal scorer in a team struggling to score? The Hawkers aren't leaving anything to chance! Time to Restump Podcast preview Saturday night's 2013 grand final repeat. (Yeah.. I know that's overdoing it) Does it sound like the Hawks' priorities aren't necessarily on securing the draft pick hindering 4 points? Freo, on the other hand, are we done? Are we alive? Are we currently treading water in purgatory contemplating the glass half full, half empty positions?Nat Fyfe is back and that surely has to give everyone on and off field a lift. Starting as the substitute seems a strange decision but we're not privy to the information behind the move.Great to see Josh Treacy return after a couple of solid hit outs and ten marks last week at Peel while Freddy re-joins the experimental forward line as well after recovering from injury quicker than expected.Sad to see Sammy Sturt has been sent back to the twos. Admittedly he had a shocker last Saturday but he wasn't on his Pat Malone and his previous two games showed encouraging signs. For the second time in a few weeks, Will Brodie also found the axe above his neck. No doubt he'll go back and dominate Peel's midfield but he probably has to bring a bit more to the senior side when he next gets an opportunity.Despite the resting of players, the Hawks that take the field won't be resting up. They're a plucky young talented group and they won't make it easy for us. James Sicily is one of the best going around down back, Mitch Lewis is going to be a gun forward, Dylan Moore always dines out on us and they've done pretty well picking up forward Fergus Green as a mature age recruit. It will be nice to see Lloyd “Braun” Meek back in WA and you can imagine he'll want to put his best foot forward…. or his best knee in a Darcy or Jackson kidney. Good contest this week with Darcy and Jackson (JackArce) taking on Ned Reeves and Meek. You'd be an optimist to think we're still alive in season 2023 as far as finals are concerned but stranger things have apparently happened. However, really in this game we just need to see some system, some structure, some composure and some cohesiveness. The worrying aspect here is that this is a game in which there is little to gain but plenty to lose. That alone creates pressure and pressure does funny things. We've got no first round pick to worry about so lets just go hell for leather and win whatever we can win. And on that note, let's get into it. Unless you've got sock drawers need tidying, grass growing or paint drying that needs to be watched. Relax, pull on your Captain's special no panicking bucket hat, bung this nonsense in your ears and join us for 45 minutes that you'll never be able to get back! Support the show

Street hawkers are a common sight, plying their trade on streets across Africa. From fruit and vegetables to gadgets and clothes – they sell it all. But in Tanzania, ‘Machingas' - petty traders - have been evicted from their stalls and told they need to go to official markets. They were given one month's notice. President Samia Suluhu Hassan says the street traders pay no tax, block up congested roads and take customers from formal shop owners who DO pay tax. But the Machingas say the move has left them struggling to feed their families. Presenter: Alan Kasujja (@Kasujja) Guest: Economist Walter Nguma. Street traders Godfrey Massima and Khamisi Mohammed
