Food serves as a perfect ice breaker, breaking down barriers, creating bonds, and helping us see one another for who we really are. It was only while sharing a meal together that two disciples recognized Jesus. Christmas table traditions bring people together as neighbors and as brothers and sisters in Christ.

Studies have shown the bonding power of gathering at a table with other people. It is where we show ourselves. It is the beginning point of intimacy, of knowing others and being known by others. Just as King David invited his disabled friend's son to sit at his table like his own son, when Christ the King invites us to the table, he is inviting us to be fully known as his own son or daughter. As sons and daughters of the King, we don't have to bring something to the table.

This Thanksgiving, we gather together with family and friends. The table is vital to the family of faith. Everywhere you read in the gospels, Jesus is eating with people. That’s because the kingdom of God isn’t a geographical location, but a set of relationships where Jesus is sovereign. We gather around the table to express gratitude for our many blessings.
