The story of Habibi Funk begins not in Cairo or Beirut but in Berlin, where a young record collector named Jannis Stürtz spent years haunting second-hand shops and chasing down obscure leads across North Africa and the Middle East. What he was piecing together was a sound the Arab world had largely forgotten, a body of music from the 1960s and 1970s that absorbed soul, funk, psychedelia, and Latin grooves, then filtered them through local sensibilities, languages, and heartbreak. Stürtz launched Habibi Funk Records in 2016 as a reissue label, but what he was really doing was making the case that this music deserved to be heard on its own terms, as something essential rather than merely curious. The 1970s were the golden decade, and nowhere does that feel more alive than in Morocco and Libya. In Morocco, Fadoul was the genre's unruly spirit, a singer who absorbed James Brown and pushed him somewhere rawer, more street-level, with records like Sid Redad built on a groove that barely holds together and is all the better for it. Attarazat Addahabia and vocalist Faradjallah occupied stranger territory, blending gnawa trance music with fuzzy electric guitars and a psychedelic looseness that places a track like Al Hadaoui somewhere between Marrakech and Woodstock. Down in Libya, the picture was equally rich. The Scorpions, not the German rock band but a Sudanese-Libyan outfit led by guitarist Sharhabil Ahmed alongside vocalist Saif Abu Bakr, were making some of the most quietly sophisticated music of the era, tracks like Seira Music and Nile Waves carrying a cool, unhurried confidence that sounds almost effortless. Ibrahim Hesnawi and Ahmed Fakroun rounded out a Libyan scene that had genuine range, from Hesnawi's deep, stately Watany Al Kabir to Fakroun's more cosmopolitan Sahranin, a track that could sit comfortably alongside anything coming out of Lagos or Kingston in the same period.   What this playlist makes clear is that Habibi Funk was never really a genre in the narrow sense. It was a moment of possibility, spread across a dozen countries and twice as many musical traditions, held together by a shared appetite for rhythm, modernity, and something that felt genuinely alive. In this episode, Diana Magdy, a gender equality specialist, feminist researcher and oral historian has a conversation with Professor Hoda Elsadda unpacking the politics of archiving, revealing archives as spaces of power and resistance rather than neutral repositories. Diana Magdy is an Atlantic Fellow for Social and Economic Equity and a feminist researcher and gender equality specialist from Cairo, Egypt. She has 12 years of experience in gender and development. As a feminist oral historian, she has worked on documenting the Egyptian feminist movement, producing feminist knowledge in Arabic, and archive building. In this area, she published a paper titled ‘Narrating Gender in Egypt's Public Sphere: The Archive of Women's Oral History'. Professor Hoda Elsadda is a feminist activist, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Cairo University, and Co-founder of the Women and Memory Forum. She previously held a Chair in the Study of the Contemporary Arab World at Manchester University, and was Co-Director of the Centre for the Advanced Study of the Arab World in the UK. Her research interests are in the areas of gender studies, comparative literature and oral history. She is author of Gender, Nation and the Arabic Novel: Egypt: 1892-2008 (Edinburgh UP and Syracuse UP, 2012); and co-editor of Oral History in Times of Change: Gender, Documentation and the Making of Archives (Cairo Papers, 35:1, 2018). After Israel's stunning and unpredictable victory (especially from the Arab perspective) in the War of Independence, there was a colossus of bruised pride in the Arab World. To answer the heretofore imponderable, "How could Israel have been victorious?" a narrative emerged, "We did not lose because Israel was strong, but rather because our leaders were weak." The search began for strong military men who could restore Arab dignity, and the undisputed rising star was Colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt. Nasser was a pan-Arabist who maintained that Arabs were born for greatness and should have had one of the most enduring empires, had they not been victims of colonialism. A Soviet shift in the 1950s pushed them from allies of Israel to adversaries. President Eisenhower, with the very strong support of his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, decided to be stronger aligned with the Arab side in the conflict. Episode 216: The Sound of Protest in Morocco: Nass el Ghiwane and the Years of Lead (1970s-1990s) In her current project, Alessandra Ciucci is Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at Columbia University in New York, posits that in order to understand the effectiveness of the songs of Nass el Ghiwane it is critical to examine their musicopoetic assemblage with its rich web of citations and intertextual references, and to acknowledge the force of the band's sound that Moroccans heard as “revolutionary” (thәuri) and with a “protest tone” (nәbra ḥtjajiya). She considers their songs as historical and emotional repositories of an era of profound transformation, as songs bearing witness to an era so marked by political violence and oppression that it came to be referred to as the “years of lead” and, at the same time, giving voice to collective hopes, dreams and aspirations. Ciucci is interested in the possibility that these songs offered in envisioning a different future in an oppressive reality and, just as importantly, the reasons for the musicians to choose the tools they used to capture the ears of a young generation. Alessandra Ciucci's research interests include: the music of Morocco, the Maghreb, the Mediterranean, sung poetry, popular music of the Arab World, music and migration and music and protest. Her first book, The Voice of the Rural: Music, Poetry and Masculinity among Migrant Moroccan Men in Umbria (Chicago University Press 2022), explores the significance and the endurance of a specific notion of the rural ('arubiya) among migrant Moroccan men in Italy. The Arabic translation of her writing on Moroccan professional female singer-dancers (shikhat) and on the musicopoetic genre ‘aiṭa, was published as a collection by the Edition La Croisée des Chemins in partnership with the Académie du Royaume du Maroc. She is currently at work on a new project tentatively titled Nass el Ghiwane: Popular Music and the Sound of Protest in Morocco (1970s-1990s), in which she delves into Nass el Ghiwane, the most influential group to forge a new musicopoetic language utilizing traditional Moroccan culture as a method of decolonization that also provided a sense of contemporary authenticity. Ciucci is the recipient of a number of grants and prizes, among which the Rome Prize in Modern Italian Studies (2018-19). As a teenager in Cairo in the early 1940s, Inji Efflatoun made two great discoveries: art and the Communist Party. Although she was from an elite French-speaking background, Efflatoun chose to “re-Egyptianize” herself, pursue painting and throw herself full-heartedly into anti-imperialist, feminist and leftist agitation. She was eventually arrested during President Nasser's repression of Communists in the early 1960s. It was in prison that she embarked upon the most productive stage of her career as an artist. Today, her prison portraits and the vibrant, luminous paintings of Egyptian rural life she painted after her release are iconic. In this episode we speak to Ahmed Gobba and Avery Gonzales, co-translators of Efflatoun's 1993 memoir, “The Memoir of Inji Efflatoun: From Childhood to Prison.” The memoir is the nucleus of a new book, The Life and Work of Inji Efflatoun, published by SKIRA and edited by Sultan Sooud Al-Qassemi and Suheyla Takesh. It comes out in the US on October 7 and is available to pre-order now. This September marks eight years since Donald Trump cozied up to pariah dictator Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt on the sidelines of the United Nations—a secret meeting that reportedly triggered a highly secretive Mueller investigation into whether Trump accepted a $10 million bribe from el-Sisi when his 2016 campaign was desperate for cash. Neoliberal trade policies have not deepened international trade in many of the region's markets. This book explains why. When the region's regimes have strong support from global powers and strong social connections to the industrial elite, they engage in extensive but deceptive trade policy reform. Behind an edifice of neoliberal trade policies, neopatrimonial forms of protectionism like tax evasion and noncompetitive procurement shield the socially connected from international competition and obstruct actual trade liberalization. Industrialists are less trustful of regime promises of neopatrimonial protectionism after reform when they have weak social connections to their regime and their regime has low support from global powers. They are more likely to defend existing protectionist policies under these conditions, resulting in less trade policy reform. Drawing on interviews, firm- and industry-level data, and evidence from Jordan to Morocco, Mirages of Reform reveals how international and domestic factors interact to shape the Arab world's rugged trade policy terrain.
