“If you want to know the future, look at the past.” While no one in their right mind would claim Einstein was giving any thought whatsoever to the future of the financial services industry, history would have once again proven him right if he had. Once upon a time, one's choice of bank was based on how well that particular institution had won over your trust. That meant building relationships with the customers and the community at large. While it's hard to envision any other reality, it's only been a couple of decades where convenience and the digital experience became such dominating factors. But as banks increasingly leverage emerging technology to race toward automation and digital optimization, the notion of trust and relationship building has all but faded into the rearview. Or has it? “Yes, you need to have an amazing digital experience. It needs to be convenient, easy and it needs to flow… But you also need to be able to get ahold of a banker just as quickly. You need that opportunity to have someone jump into that digital experience as you're a part of it–if you have a challenge, or a question or an alternative need. For our industry, that's what everyone is trying to solve.” This is the mantra of Eric Sobie, SVP, Head of Consumer Sales and Strategy at Heartland Financial USA, Inc. It's his belief that in order for the financial services industry to move forward, it needs to find a way to bridge the gap between the personalized experiences of the past with the efficiency and digital innovation of today. And as Chris Tapley, VP of Financial Services Consulting at EPAM, points out, it's a notion with strong precedent behind it. “It's interesting because what bank customers told us is that they have very disparate use cases for in-person versus digital interactions with their banks. They want to move money digitally; they want to check balances digitally; but when they need advice, or when they need a problem solved, they… want some kind of in-person interaction. Being able to converge that digital and human experience will be critical.” As the two discuss, it's this convergence where the emergent technologies of AI and generative AI will play an important role. While they might make it possible to further automate, optimize and streamline customer interactions – for example, recommending a specific product for a customer based on the available data – is this what consumers really want? As Sobie makes note, the alternative is to leverage these technologies to gain a more thorough understanding of the customer, and to upskill bankers to better build relationships with their customers based on this insight. “I think banks, rightfully so, are a little nervous about AI, because we are a business built upon trust; we want nothing to invalidate that trust. Let's not use AI to create an opportunity to drive [a product] recommendation. But can we get predictive analytics? Can we understand where the customer is on their road map… and can we get a whole view of who that customer is from the data?” That's how banks can bridge the gap between today's digital environment and the personalized experiences of the past. Now, it's time to dive into the full *Resonance Test* conversation. Enjoy your stay. Host: Alison Kotin Engineer: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Scott MacAllister Executive Producer: Ken Gordon

Is it future? Or is it past? One thing's for sure - it's a brand new season of NO ENCORE~!And it wouldn't be The Return of this particular podcast without leaning into some truly tragic news in the form of the passing of visionary filmmaker David Lynch, who shuffled off this mortal coil in mid-January. As such, we're marking the first episode back with a tribute to a man who inspired as much creativity as he did nightmares during his time on this earth. A true original, Lynch cast a genuinely mesmerising spell in his work via a uniquely potent mix of imagination, surrealism, horror, and deep empathy. He deserves to be celebrated, and so we will do just that. Leading the charge is returning guest co-host David A. Tapley; mastermind of Tandem Felix and a damn fine Gordon Cole impersonator - seriously, he went as him for a Twin Peaks-themed night once and it looked and sounded terrific. ACT ONE: The preamble in which we ramble. ACT TWO (9:05): Plenty of news to dissect from weeks gone by, including Nine Inch Nails' very welcome impending visit to Dublin, Grimes saying Grimes things, the jaw-dropping Emilia Perez controversy, popular music artists of the time turning to cinematic endeavours. Ringo Starr's red-hot confession, Kendrick's dominance at the Grammy Awards (and Drake's further public humiliation), Gracie Abrams stans finding new ways to cause problems, the Boyzone documentary, and Billy Corgan stepping onto our turf. It's Die Hard in a flood! This week, hosts Phil and Liam dive headfirst into the watery chaos of HARD RAIN with special guest Kris Tapley of the 50MPH Podcast! As the small midwestern town of Huntingberg, Indiana is overwhelmed by an epic flood, armored car security guard Tom (Christian Slater) finds himself in the middle of heist plot orchestrated by determined thief Jim (Morgan Freeman). Tom attempts to thwart the thieves by hiding the money, but as the water level rises, he soon discovers that the opportunity presented by this natural disaster brings out both the best and the worst in his fellow citizens. Can Tom stop the thieves, avenge his partner's death, and save the remaining townsfolk, before the dam breaks and the entire area goes completely underwater? In this action-packed episode, the guys explore the film's unique take on the ‘Die Hard' paradigm, comparing it to other water-based action thrillers and dissecting the themes of survival, greed, and heroism in a flooded world. What does the film say about human nature in the face of catastrophe? How does HARD RAIN stack up as an action film when compared to others in the genre? And just what the hell is Betty White doing in this movie?!With Kris Tapley's insights from his years in the world of film criticism, the discussion dives deep into the film's approach to disaster cinema, its star-studded cast, its Western echoes, and the ambitious technical challenges of bringing a flooded town to life on screen. They also address the oft-repeated urban legend that this film was once considered as a sequel to SPEED! So join the boys for a suitably wet and wild episode!HARD RAIN trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vsmt4B35hsMAt the time of release, HARD RAIN is available to stream on Hoopla and Pluto TV and is available to rent or buy on YouTube, Apple TV and Fandango.Click here to subscribe to our Patreon-only podcast, 48 Hours Of Buddy Movies! It's Die Hard on a cruise ship!Leeches! Copper poisoning! Vehicles moving very slowly! Or sometimes not at all! That's right folks, it's the sequel nobody asked for! This week, Phil and Liam are cruising for a bruising as they attempt to make sense of the hideously misguided cinematic atrocity that is SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL! Joining them on this voyage into watery oblivion is none other than Kris Tapley, host of the SPEED oral history podcast 50MPH! While on a vacation cruise in the Caribbean with her new boyfriend Alex Shaw (Jason Patric), Annie (Sandra Bullock) and Alex find themselves caught up in a nefarious terror plot orchestrated by John Geiger (Willem Dafoe), a disgruntled computer programmer seeking revenge on the shipping company who screwed him over. Geiger seizes control of the cruise ship's computer systems and threatens to destroy the vessel and everyone on it…so can Alex and Annie foil fiendish Geiger's plan, before the cruise ship crashes? If you're still awake, maybe you'll find out! The guys start by discussing the memories of the movie's release, and their feelings about the prospect of a sequel to Jan De Bont's peerless original classic, 1994's SPEED (aka “DIE HARD on a bus”). They also ponder what might have happened to the DIE HARD franchise, had the same choice been made to replace the leading man action hero with another actor. After talking through the various connections between DIE HARD and SPEED 2 in the ‘DIE HARD DNA' section (including an abandoned DIE HARD sequel with an almost identical premise), the boys break down the film piece by piece, from its ill-conceived premise, to the total betrayal of Annie's character, to the doomed attempt to replace Jack Traven with another gung-ho LAPD SWAT cop and hope nobody minded, to the pitiful villain with a very confused agenda (and a predilection for leeches, lest we forget). This is arguably the worst film that's been covered on the podcast so far…but it might also be the funniest episode yet! SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8f7HlX6iW-MAt the time of release, SPEED 2: CRUISE CONTROL is streaming on Starz and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, AMC On Demand and all the usual platforms! When I signed a copy of Extreme Alpinism for Pete in 1999 I wrote, "The moment of terror is the beginning of life. Be scared." I signed the book to a reputation—to hearsay—instead of signing it to the actual man. Years later, having become friends, he reminded me of the inscription. The phrase was my response to hearing a story of him bolting routes in Hyalite Canyon, sacrilege to me at the time; reducing risk to pursue purely technical difficulty and permanently altering the resource by chasing that grail. We had a good laugh 25 years after the fact ... we are both still alive to do so. In the moment of our early encounters I couldn't see the similarities between us. I focused on the hot-button issue in my own philosophical pursuits so I missed what could have been an influential and powerful relationship. What I couldn't see then was that Pete strove to connect with nature through adventure, exposing himself to great risk in exchange for the promise of great reward. That individual reward, when communicated and shared, becomes inspiration, becomes progression ... reinforcing the interconnectedness of the community, the climbers seeing and seeking and pushing limits out on the edge. Now that we are on the backside of the arc, the offramp so to speak, and still alive to be wondering, "What now? What next?" we sat down for a conversation. We spoke about the influence of music on climbing as an activity and attitude in that era, when there was a soundtrack to everything. The punk rock cry was "no future" and that might seem claustrophobic or oppressive but our interpretation of it was that, "If I have no future then I am utterly free to act in the present, to do what I want to do right now because I'm going to die anyway." But there was no map, no guideposts; we had to manufacture our own rites of passage into adulthood because the rites that were culturally common before no longer existed. Without a map, with only casual insight from brief exposure to mentors, we followed what we could, imitated what seemed appropriate, and struck out into a wild world where those who tried the hardest seems to live the shortest lives but we went there anyway. And somewhere out there we learned that fear is not a barrier, it's just good information.
