And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.” (Luke 22:39-46) In the most agonizing moments of His life, Jesus did not run from God – He ran to Him. As the weight of the cross drew nearer, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray, as was His custom. This wasn't new, prayer was a big part of Jesus' lifestyle – it was His safe place, His renewal of strength, His lifeline to the Father. And in this moment of overwhelming sorrow, He modeled what to do when temptation and suffering feel unbearable: pray. Jesus had every reason to feel tempted. The cross was not only physical torture – it was separation, public humiliation, and the crushing weight of all sin and God's wrath. Jesus knew what was coming, and He possibly could have remembered Satan's offer in the wilderness. That earlier temptation – “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me” (Matthew 4:9) – an offer meant to tempt avoidance of the cross. A temptation of an easier way – a way out. But instead of entering into that temptation, Jesus entered into prayer. He cried out, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” This is the essence of prayer: not to avoid all pain or get what we want, but to bring every fear, every weakness, and every desire to God – and then submit to His will in full trust and surrender. Jesus' instructions to His disciples are just as urgent for us: “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” Temptation is not sin—but without prayer, we are far more likely to fall into sin. Whether it's the temptation to give up, lash out, run away, or seek comfort outside of God's will, our greatest protection is not our willpower – it's our connection with the Father. Fervent and genuine prayer doesn't always change our circumstances, but it does change us. Prayer strengthens our resolve, reminds us of truth, re-centers our perspective, and fills us with grace to obey, even when it's hard. So, when you feel overwhelmed, pray. When you feel tempted, pray. When you don't know what to do, pray. Jesus has shown us the way and prayer is not a last resort – it's the path to victory. Our connection to the Father, and strengthening our resolve to do His will, is the pathway to victory over every temptation. May we always make prayer our first response, not just in moments of crisis, but in every moment of life. Let us not enter into temptation, but be led into deeper communion with God through prayer and overcome just as Jesus did.

I had stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I did the first time, and the Lord listened to me at this time also. It was not his will to destroy you. — Deuteronomy 10:10 Moses explains here that when he received the commands of God on tablets of stone, he prayed fervently for the people. This was the second time he had gone up on the mountain to receive God's law, because the people had sinned while he was away the first time. The people had sinned so badly that God threatened to destroy them, but Moses interceded for them, and God heard Moses' prayers and sent the people on their way. (See also Deuteronomy 9:7-29.) When our hearts are troubled and seeking God's grace on behalf of our churches, families, coworkers, partners, and other hurting or lost souls, we pray. It is powerful to pray and to be prayed for persistently. We pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17). It is not unusual for people to intercede for others who are in need, such as homeless, sick, hungry, or displaced individuals. Even more, we can pray for people to repent and be forgiven. We count on God to move mightily in people's lives and situations because we know God loves them. James 5:16 assures us that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. God listens to us, and Jesus, the Savior, faithfully intercedes for us (Romans 8:34). Amazing! Father, Son, and Holy Spirit thank you for calling me to intercede for people and situations in our broken world. Help me to pray faithfully, as Jesus himself does. In his name, Amen.

In this lesson, Dr. Mitchell will cover 1st Peter chapter 4 verses 7 and 8. Here he speaks about the end of all things which is at hand. He will exhort us to love, patient love, genuine love, fervent love even to those who are hard to love. Only Jesus' shed blood on the cross covers our sins before God. Dr. Mitchell goes on to show that love covers a multitude of sins. This speaks of covering the sins of others before the public. He says, genuine love does not broadcast the sins and failures of God's people. So what should one's response be? Pray for that one who has failed. This brings the failing one before God who is able to forgive and to restore. Let's turn to 1st Peter chapter 4 verses 7 and 8 with Dr. Mitchell, here on the Unchanging Word Bible broadcast.
Read OnlineAnd every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death, but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words. Luke 19:47–48Jesus had just entered Jerusalem for the upcoming Feast of Passover. He arrived in that holy city and then returned again the next day and entered the Temple area. As He witnessed the corruption of those selling animals for the Temple sacrifices, Jesus responded with fervent preaching in an attempt to cleanse the Temple from this corruption. He quoted the Prophet Isaiah and cried out, “It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” Luke's Gospel points out the reaction of the chief priests, the scribes and the leaders of the people. They were “seeking to put him to death.” However, as the Gospel further relates, “they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.”It's important to consider this passage within its context. The words that Jesus spoke were words that sought to cleanse the Temple of corruption. With the approval of the temple priests, who benefitted from the temple tax, there were many people who were using the practice of divine worship to make a profit for selfish gain, turning the Temple into a marketplace. Jesus could see this clearly, and many of the people would have also sensed the corruption of these practices. Though they needed to purchase animals for the ritual sacrifices and Passover meal, many of them were most likely disturbed by this abuse. Therefore, as Jesus spoke with fervor and condemnation, it angered those who were responsible for the corruption but left the people with consolation. Hence, they were “hanging on his words.”The Gospel is always consoling, and, for those who are open, it leads them to hang on every word that is spoken. It refreshes and invigorates, clarifies and motivates. Usually when we think of the Gospel, we think of words that are gentle and inviting—words of mercy to the sinner and compassion for those who are struggling. But sometimes the pure Gospel message from our Lord fiercely attacks sin and evil. And though this may be shocking to the evil doers, to those with pure faith, these words also refresh and strengthen.Today, we need the full Gospel message. Many need to hear Jesus' gentle invitation to conversion by which their heavy burdens are lifted. But many others need to hear His firm words of condemnation. And the Church as a whole needs both of these messages to be proclaimed if we are to fully participate in the apostolic ministry of our Lord. Only our Lord has the right to condemn, chastise, and call others to repentance. But we are all called to share in this mission of our Lord. And though we do not have the right to judge the hearts of others, when we see objective evil and disorder within our world and even within our Church, we must cry out with our Lord, “My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.” And when we do hear the holy and inspired words of God's messengers who boldly and courageously proclaim the truth and call others to repentance, it should inspire, invigorate and console us as we find ourselves hanging on their every word.Reflect, today, upon the Gospel messages that need to be preached in our day and age that are both inspired by God and are also fervently directed at corruption within the world and even within our Church. Allow yourself to support such holy preaching and to be inspired by it. Hang on these holy words of God's prophets today. As you do, God will protect them and inspire them to continue His holy mission of purification. My purifying Lord, the corruption within our world, and at times even within our Church, requires Your holy preaching and purifying action. Please send Your messengers to those in need so that all may be cleansed as You cleansed the Temple. May I share in this mission in the ways in which You call me, and may I always hang on every word spoken from Your merciful and fervent heart of love. Jesus, I trust in You. Nevada was once a ruby-red state, but now it has been blue for four elections in a row, and Democrats think it will remain that way.
