After 43 days, the longest federal government shutdown in history has ended. President Donald Trump signed the legislative spending package into law late Wednesday night after the House passed it 222-209. While the reopening of the government is certainly a step in a positive direction, it comes with lingering questions. First and foremost on that list is whether much of the government will be right back facing the threat of a second shutdown come the end of January, when the continuing resolution is set to expire for a large block of federal agencies. However some agencies, like the Department of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as the legislative branch, will receive full appropriations through fiscal 2026 as lawmakers on the subcommittees that oversee them were able to pass full funding bills as part of the package. On top of that, though the government's doors are officially back open for business, there will be some lag in getting key services back online and returning workers to their posts. Issues that were key during the 43-day saga like air travel operations and SNAP benefits will take some time to return to normal. As will paying federal employees who were furloughed without pay during the shutdown. And, it's not clear yet what the end of the shutdown could mean for federal employees who were removed from their jobs via reductions in force since Oct. 1. The congressional package that reopened the government placed a caveat on funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs' Electronic Health Record system, putting new pressure on the agency to resolve its yearslong challenges with the rollout. The bill to fund the VA through fiscal 2026 will dish out $3.4 billion for the EHR rollout, but the full amount is contingent on the agency updating Congress on the revised timeline and cost estimates. The provision, tucked into the 394-page spending package, would withhold 30% of the funding until July of next year and gives the agency secretary until June 1 to hand over the requested information. This information includes an updated life-cycle cost estimate for the EHR Modernization program, based on the VA's announcement earlier this year to accelerate deployments in nine facilities. The Senate also requested a facility-by-facility deployment schedule for all facilities expected to receive the EHRM program, along with the projected federal VA staffing levels and required resources. The secretary is also expected to certify that all VA facilities using the EHR have exceeded or met health care performance metrics and certify that the department has at least four consecutive, successful site deployments without delays or patient harm. It comes after Senate staff was informed in 2023 that the rollout of the EHR system was linked to six cases of “catastrophic harm,” including four deaths. Later that year, the Biden administration paused the EHR rollout. The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. Complaining about our bodies or our personalities is a "Great-American-Pastime" it would seem. But the scriptures confront that habit in Psalm 139, when the psalmist declares that he is "fearfully and wonderfully made". In today's episode we'll linger in the imagery of being "knit together" in our mother's wombs. Listen in!Read Psalm 139:13-14Questions from today's episode: Linger in the beauty that God knit each one of us together in our mother's womb and is intimately acquainted with everything about us. He declares that you are fearfully and wonderfully made! As you meditate on this truth, is your loving Creator inviting you to surrender your complaint about any part of you, either a physical trait or a personality trait, and instead to praise and thank Him for making you exactly as you are? Would you invite Him to show you how He might use that trait as a blessing to others?Podcast music written and recorded by Caleb Lieurance
Reddit and live-streaming platform Kick will be added to the platforms required to ban 16s when the new rules come into effect in December. Australia's impending social media ban for under-16s, which covers eight major platforms, hinges on ongoing eSafety assessments that distinguish between social media, messaging, and gaming services, explaining why platforms like Steam and Twitch were not initially included.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is RL Carpentier III, author of the book Our Lady of the Overlook. Rodney is a lifelong writer of stories and poems and songs and now, novels. As a kid he and his mom would try to plot whodunits on Sunday afternoons; in middle school he and his friends tried to develop their own superhero comic book; and in college he wrote song lyrics for his pop-punk band Gone Ashley. But he's had a novel stuck in his head for the last 20 years and it's about time for him to let it all out. Professionally, he has been a storyteller throughout his long law enforcement career. He has written factually about the mundane to the maniacal. He has told his peers, his bosses, and juries about what he has seen and done, what he's investigated and what he's able to prove. It is a procedural and clinical style; something he has brought over to his fiction writing. So, at this crossroad of his life and career, well into his 40's and in the downswing toward retirement, he is going to live out his dream of being a writer. He has his wife and daughter in his corner and the whole world for an audience. In my book review, I stated Our Lady of the Overlook is the first in a trilogy of murder suspense novels. And talk about suspense! From the beginning, RL makes the reader wonder who did it and why. We meet Mike Ellis, a man who has come home to be a cop - but remains in his dead father's shadow, a man who was Police Chief of the town before his heart attack. Before long, he is sucked into a murder investigation that is quite like his father's first murder case and one that has long since gone cold. Despite no evidence, Mike believes that the two have to be related. But with a 40-year span between them, will he ever be able to prove his theory? But more importantly, will he get the chance? There are those on the force who want to set him up for failure - retribution against his father. And his personal ghosts work against him as well. This novel is full of intrigue, half-clues, secrets, and trauma, and the ending will leave you wanting more! If you crave more moments of feeling awake and fully present, this episode reveals how aliveness is already available in the ordinary. I'll never forget a moment in Montana when everything felt so alive - the colors in the sky, my family laughing, the fire crackling. But soon I wondered, why can't I feel this at home too? That question led me to discover that aliveness isn't rare, it's simply missed when we rush past it. Today, I share how to notice it more often. Action Steps: Practice presence: Slow down and let yourself truly notice small things. Savor simple rituals: Linger over coffee, watch the sunset, or enjoy your first bites of dinner. Put the phone away: Create space to be fully there with people and experiences. Use your breath: Take slow, intentional breaths to reconnect with your body. Invite joy daily: Play music, dance, or hug someone a little longer. Join the email list for Take The Exit - Be the first to step inside the story! More from Megan YouTube | Website | Instagram
Gaelynn Lea is a violinist, singer-songwriter, disability rights advocate, author, and public speaker. Born with osteogenesis imperfecta, Gaelynn began her musical journey with the support of a childhood music teacher and her musical family. You'll hear about how her big break happened when she won NPR Music's Tiny Desk Contest in 2016, which led to a fascinating creative life which in the last few years has included international touring and scoring Macbeth on Broadway, starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga. Gaelynn is really open to trying new things, and this really came through as she talked to me about how she'll never have enough time to explore all her curiosities, reflections on her first compositions and songs, how she collaborated with mentors Alan Sparhawk, and Charlie Parr, and how she created a new musical fable for the stage called Invisible Fences with disabled storyteller Kevin Kling. You'll be hearing clips from some of Gaelynn's albums during the podcast, and her Bandcamp is linked in the show notes for you. We begin with a look at her upcoming memoir—It Wasn't Meant to Be Perfect— a warm, funny and deeply-felt exploration of disability, music, and the messy creativity of an artist's life. I plan to welcome Gaelynn back for a future episode focused on that work. You can find the pre-order link in the show notes. This sermon on Exodus 32–33 contrasts Israel's impatience and idolatry with Moses' and Joshua's pursuit of God's presence. When Moses delayed on Mount Sinai, the people quickly turned to idols, showing how easily we exchange God for substitutes when He doesn't work on our timeline. Idols—whether status, possessions, or relationships—cannot satisfy and only pollute our lives. Yet even after their rebellion, God remained faithful to His covenant, offering His people provision and protection, though withholding His presence. The Israelites mourned, realizing that God's presence is more valuable than blessings alone. Moses responded by setting up a tent outside the camp to meet with God, while the people only watched from a distance. Joshua, however, chose to linger in God's presence, unwilling to leave. The message emphasizes that true transformation, wisdom, peace, and power are found not in fleeting substitutes but in lingering with God. While many settle for watching from afar or giving God minimal time, the call is to step into His presence personally, remain there, and experience intimacy with Him. Ultimately, lingering is the key to knowing God deeply and walking into His promises.

Send us a textThe Barn and Midwest Mixtape Podcast are proud to welcome Fergal Lawler, drummer of the iconic Irish band The Cranberries, for a special conversation celebrating the 30th Anniversary Editions of their breakthrough album, No Need to Argue. The reissue arrives in stunning fashion with a limited three-LP vinyl set featuring remixes by Iain Cook of CHVRCHES, rare live recordings, a demo of “Zombie,” and the band's unforgettable MTV: Unplugged performance. Fans have long awaited the official release of the group's legendary 1995 Unplugged set, and that wait is finally over: beginning November 7, 2025, MTV Unplugged will be available for the first time as a standalone release on vinyl, CD, and digital via Island Records/UMe. A special colored vinyl edition with alternate cover art will also be available exclusively through Complex.Originally taped on February 14, 1995 at the Howard Gilman Opera House in Brooklyn, the intimate nine-song performance aired two months later during the sixth season of MTV Unplugged. Following the release of their worldwide smash No Need to Argue, the setlist showcased the band's blend of vulnerability and power with songs like “Dreaming My Dreams,” “Ode To My Family,” “Empty,” “Zombie,” and the title track. In this short episode of Help Me Understand, Coach JK McLeod shares his perspective a pattern many people fall into: It's not the event itself that causes problems, it's the days that follow. A birthday party, a vacation, or a night out isn't the real issue. The drift begins when “just once” turns into two, three, or four days of decisions that pull you away from your habits.Using his own recent birthday weekend as an example, JK shows how quickly lingering choices can sneak in, and why the language of being “off track” misses the point. He reframes it as course correction, returning to rhythm, or resetting the compass.Listeners will take away practical strategies to get back to center after events.Instagram: @coachJKmcleodEmail: JK@jkmcleod.comSubscribe to receive a free workout each week: HERE

Jeff Blair and Kevin Barker are joined in-studio with Blue Jays radio analyst and former pitcher Chris Leroux to debate how John Schneider should reconsider utilizing Brendon Little and the rest of the relievers, if the roster is capable of being the best team in the Majors, even the AL East, Eric Lauer's second stint back to the bullpen, and Bo Bichette's contact ability this season. Then, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi stops by to discuss the Blue Jays' recent additions to the team with rosters expanding for the month, if they can still call-up Trey Yesavage to the big leagues, why he wouldn't be too concerned with Jeff Hoffman despite some hiccups over the recent stretch, and if John Schneider will consider switching up the second spot in the batting order. Once you let anger into your life, once you let it motivate or animate you, it's very hard to get rid of. It's hard to find a substitute that measures up. It's hard to let it go.
