Send us a textEndings deserve as much care as beginnings. We invited Faith and Nate, founders of Pilgrim House in Santiago de Compostela, to reflect on eleven years of offering a soft landing for pilgrims who have just completed the Camino—and on the bittersweet move back to the United States after nearly eighteen years in Spain. Their journey started with backpacks and a love for traveler culture; it matured into a vocation to practice simple, excellent hospitality where it matters most: the threshold between a long walk and the return home. They share how a dream of opening an albergue evolved into creating a Pilgrim center instead when circumstances didn't go as they had originally imagined. Yet, that pivot proved to be better than their original idea as it unlocked a deeper and wider impact in the Camino community as a whole. Without beds to manage, Pilgrim House could stay open to everyone, not just those with reservations. That choice created time for real conversations, quiet rooms for reflection, a kitchen that hosted shared meals and impromptu lessons, and a staff of experienced pilgrims ready to help with both blisters and big questions. We discuss the early, scrappy days, grants that shaped the space, and the teammates whose fingerprints are everywhere. We also look outward. Santiago's season is longer, the pilgrim tide is higher, and the city has grown more global while holding onto its slow, walkable rhythm. For would‑be expats, Faith and Nate offer grounded advice: test a 90‑day stay before committing, learn the language with patience, build local friendships, and find a purpose that outlasts novelty. And for pilgrims nearing the finish, their counsel is clear—don't rush. Linger in Santiago, use resources like Pilgrim House and Camino Companions, and let your ending become a thoughtful transition. As Pilgrim House continues under the creative leadership of Gabe with Jessica and Emily, its DNA stays intact: warmth, presence, and the spirit of the Camino made tangible. If Santiago is on your horizon, stop by Pilgrim House and exhale. If this conversation resonates, subscribe, share it with a friend who loves the Camino, and leave a review to help others find the show.Support the showBecome a supporter of The Camino Cafe Podcast:

In this episode of My Favorite Mistake, Mark Graban talks with Jason Sherman, an entrepreneur, startup advisor, and educator, about the early startup mistakes that quietly shape everything that follows. Episode page with transcript, video, and more Jason shares hard-earned lessons about choosing co-founders, distinguishing “smart money” from money alone, and why MVPs should accelerate learning rather than encourage overbuilding. The conversation explores judgment, incentives, and alignment through a Lean lens — showing how optimism, unchecked assumptions, and unclear decision rights can undermine even strong ideas. This episode is especially relevant for founders, leaders, and anyone working under uncertainty who wants to turn mistakes into insight instead of regret.

Do you have a Giraffe mindset or a Hippo state of mind? Soren Kierkegaard said that “The door of happiness opens inward.” Dr. Seuss said, “Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.” Wait, did Dr. Seuss really say that? The Cranberries said, "Do you have to let it linger?" We think you do. We also think that Dr. Seuss didn't really say that, but we know who did. So come and Linger with us and bring in the New Year correctly. You'll be Happy you did.By the way we meant to post this Monday but due to some issues, we didn't get it posted in until actual New Years Eve so some of the dates/timeline we mentioned are no longer completely accurate. The song we used for the intro was "Happy Holidays (Beef Wellington Remix)" by Beef Wellington and 2003 Christmas Chill Inc. The ending song was "Make Someone Happy" by Jimmy Durante. We used "Linger" from The Cranberries. We also used "Baby It's Cold Outside" the original from the romantic comedy musical Neptune's Daughter released by MGM in 1949. We don't own any rights. Simply to become aware—with kindness, honesty, and God's presence. As we re-release this conversation with CFO Karen Williams during the holiday week, we're opening the episode with a short preface drawn from something she shared recently on LinkedIn. In a post about books that shaped her as a leader, Williams reflected on culture, bias, and the importance of staying open to different perspectives—ideas that echo throughout this episode and frame how she's built her career. Those themes weren't always obvious early on.Williams traces a formative lesson back to her move from a 20-person startup into Mars, where she says she “bombed at networking.” Accustomed to a small, family-style environment, she kept what she describes as a “head down, get on with it” mentality. She didn't yet understand the importance of relationships and networks, she tells us, and after a couple of years, she left. That experience reshaped how she approached her next chapter at American Express. The culture there was “very people focused, very relationship driven,” Williams tells us, but progress still came slowly at first. It took time to move from analyst to manager as she built credibility and learned how influence actually works inside large organizations. Once she reached that level, things accelerated quickly.A structural gap gave her direct exposure to a divisional CFO, who became her sponsor and helped unlock three to four subsequent roles, Williams tells us. Over fifteen years, she held roughly nine roles at American Express—calling the experience her “Harvard School of training years.”In the episode, listeners will also hear how Williams continued to stretch herself by moving out of finance into business leadership, leading strategy through disruption, and later stepping into CFO roles where unexpected challenges—like cleaning up a balance sheet—tested her early credibility. It's a conversation about learning, reflection, and how experience—especially the uncomfortable kind—shapes leadership over time.
US stocks fell as concerns over AI exuberance resurfaced, with Broadcom sliding amid margin worries, while Lululemon rallied after raising its annual profit outlook. Meanwhile, US government bond yields rose after Fed officials warned of lingering inflation pressures. Elsewhere, European shares also retreated as a risk-off mood spilled into commodities. Back home, Aussie shares are expected to open the week lower, snapping their longest winning streak since August. Julia and Eliza are back in the stu for a deep dive into hostile architecture, unpacking the spikes, slopes, bars, and billion-dollar "design choices" that quietly shape our cities and public spaces. Greg Bishop reviews the status of several challenges to Illinois' gun and magazine ban, including the U.S. Supreme Court taking a case challenging Cook County's ban into conference Friday. A decision whether they'll take the case could be released Monday. This as the case where a district court found the state's law unconstitutional remains pending in an appeals court, and a case challenging Naperville's ban remains in a district court. # Trump Court Cases Update: November 2025The legal landscape surrounding Donald Trump has remained extraordinarily active heading into the final month of 2025, with several significant developments unfolding in recent weeks that deserve your attention. The most immediate and consequential matter involves a case that just saw oral arguments before the Supreme Court on November fifth. Trump v. V.O.S. Selections, Inc., consolidated with Learning Resources, Inc. v. Trump, presents a fundamental question about presidential power. At the heart of this dispute is whether the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA, actually authorizes the president to impose tariffs. The Supreme Court expedited this case with remarkable speed, granting the petition for certiorari on September ninth and setting it for argument less than two months later. During those oral arguments on November fifth, the Solicitor General D. John Sauer represented federal parties, while attorneys Neal K. Katyal and Benjamin N. Gutman argued on behalf of private and state parties respectively. What makes this case particularly compelling is its timing and implications. The case originated in the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals and was elevated to the Supreme Court with an unusual motion to expedite. The Court allocated one full hour for oral argument and consolidated multiple related cases to address this single crucial question about executive authority. The briefs filed throughout September and October contained arguments from amicus curiae groups including Advancing American Freedom, as well as various state respondents who weighed in on the matter. No opinion has been issued from the Supreme Court as of late November, though such decisions typically take weeks or months following oral arguments.Meanwhile, another significant legal matter involving Trump relates to New York state criminal charges. According to court documents from the New York courts, Trump was convicted of thirty-four counts of falsifying business records with intent to defraud, which included intent to commit or conceal a conspiracy to promote a presidential election by unlawful means. Following his election victory in November 2024, Trump requested a stay of sentencing and eventual dismissal of the case. However, the court acknowledged that while Trump consented to and actually requested the adjournment that postponed sentencing after the election, the record makes clear the defendant's role in directing the case's timeline. The sentencing decision remains pending as we move through November 2025.Additionally, various litigation continues against the Trump administration itself, as reported through legal tracking organizations. A coalition of nonprofits and cities has sued the Trump administration over the suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for November 2025, representing yet another frontline legal battle involving the administration's policies and priorities. These cases represent the intersection of executive power, electoral politics, and administrative action that will likely shape legal precedent for years to come. The tariff case at the Supreme Court, in particular, carries enormous consequences for how future presidents may wield economic authority.Thank you so much for tuning in to this update on Trump administration litigation. Be sure to come back next week for more on how these cases develop and what they mean for American law and governance. This has been a Quiet Please production. The United States has amended its peace plan for Ukraine, reducing it to 19 points and opening a dual diplomatic track with Moscow and Kyiv. But the new plan is stirring anxiety that Donald Trump might be willing to push Ukraine to sign a peace deal heavily tilted towards Russia.

Host Adam Bittner welcomes Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise to analyze Pitt's loss to Notre Dame and what it means for the Panthers' ACC title hopes. Was the ugly defeat a signal of how far Pat Narduzzi's program still has to go? Or will it perform better against conference competition? Can Mason Heintschel shake off the adversity as a freshman? And are Kyle Louis, Rasheem Biles and the Pitt front seven a threat to every team left on their schedule, including ranked Georgia Tech and Miami teams? Our duo tackles those questions, then ponders Narduzzi going up against old rival James Franklin now that he's been hired as Virginia Tech's coach. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Many believers confuse being around God with actually being close to Him. The story of Mary and Martha reveals that proximity and presence are different things. While Martha was busy serving Jesus, Mary chose to sit at His feet and experience true intimacy. The greatest threat to spiritual closeness isn't sin but distraction. True confidence comes not from the absence of fear but from the presence of the Father. When we intentionally position ourselves to spend time with God, we absorb His power and boldness naturally rather than trying to manufacture it through our own efforts.

After 43 days, the longest federal government shutdown in history has ended. President Donald Trump signed the legislative spending package into law late Wednesday night after the House passed it 222-209. While the reopening of the government is certainly a step in a positive direction, it comes with lingering questions. First and foremost on that list is whether much of the government will be right back facing the threat of a second shutdown come the end of January, when the continuing resolution is set to expire for a large block of federal agencies. However some agencies, like the Department of Veterans Affairs, Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as the legislative branch, will receive full appropriations through fiscal 2026 as lawmakers on the subcommittees that oversee them were able to pass full funding bills as part of the package. On top of that, though the government's doors are officially back open for business, there will be some lag in getting key services back online and returning workers to their posts. Issues that were key during the 43-day saga like air travel operations and SNAP benefits will take some time to return to normal. As will paying federal employees who were furloughed without pay during the shutdown. And, it's not clear yet what the end of the shutdown could mean for federal employees who were removed from their jobs via reductions in force since Oct. 1. The congressional package that reopened the government placed a caveat on funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs' Electronic Health Record system, putting new pressure on the agency to resolve its yearslong challenges with the rollout. The bill to fund the VA through fiscal 2026 will dish out $3.4 billion for the EHR rollout, but the full amount is contingent on the agency updating Congress on the revised timeline and cost estimates. The provision, tucked into the 394-page spending package, would withhold 30% of the funding until July of next year and gives the agency secretary until June 1 to hand over the requested information. This information includes an updated life-cycle cost estimate for the EHR Modernization program, based on the VA's announcement earlier this year to accelerate deployments in nine facilities. The Senate also requested a facility-by-facility deployment schedule for all facilities expected to receive the EHRM program, along with the projected federal VA staffing levels and required resources. The secretary is also expected to certify that all VA facilities using the EHR have exceeded or met health care performance metrics and certify that the department has at least four consecutive, successful site deployments without delays or patient harm. It comes after Senate staff was informed in 2023 that the rollout of the EHR system was linked to six cases of “catastrophic harm,” including four deaths. Later that year, the Biden administration paused the EHR rollout. The Daily Scoop Podcast is available every Monday-Friday afternoon. With just about a month to go before Australia's new law restricting social media use for under 16s comes into effect, many details remain unclear. Amid ongoing uncertainty, the government has announced an expansion of the platforms subject to the restrictions — bringing the total to nine platforms.
Complaining about our bodies or our personalities is a "Great-American-Pastime" it would seem. But the scriptures confront that habit in Psalm 139, when the psalmist declares that he is "fearfully and wonderfully made". In today's episode we'll linger in the imagery of being "knit together" in our mother's wombs. Listen in!Read Psalm 139:13-14Questions from today's episode: Linger in the beauty that God knit each one of us together in our mother's womb and is intimately acquainted with everything about us. He declares that you are fearfully and wonderfully made! As you meditate on this truth, is your loving Creator inviting you to surrender your complaint about any part of you, either a physical trait or a personality trait, and instead to praise and thank Him for making you exactly as you are? Would you invite Him to show you how He might use that trait as a blessing to others?Podcast music written and recorded by Caleb Lieurance
Reddit and live-streaming platform Kick will be added to the platforms required to ban 16s when the new rules come into effect in December. Australia's impending social media ban for under-16s, which covers eight major platforms, hinges on ongoing eSafety assessments that distinguish between social media, messaging, and gaming services, explaining why platforms like Steam and Twitch were not initially included.
Hetty Lui McKinnon is one of our favorite recipe developers, and she writes a mean Substack to boot. She's the author of a fun new book, Linger, which smartly bridges her love for plant-based cooking, dinner parties, and salad artistry. In this episode, Hetty returns to our studio to discuss her viral tomato and dumpling salad, and why a party at her house might include a photo shoot. Also on the show we have a great conversation with Toni Chapman. Toni is a passionate home cook and recipe developer and the creator of Toni's Recipes and TheMoodyFoody, where she shares bold, comforting dishes made for real life. Inspired by childhood favorites, takeout classics, and family traditions, her recipes are designed to impress, without the stress. She's the author of a great new book, Everything's Good, and we talk about what is exciting her in the kitchen and her life both on and offline. From the BBC World Service: U.S. President Donald Trump is in South Korea for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum, or APEC. As U.S. tariffs in the region loom large, he'll also be meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping tomorrow. Plus, Ben Cohen — co-founder of Ben and Jerry's — says he's launching a new, Palestinian-themed melon-flavored sorbet after previous attempts were blocked by the firm's parent company Unilever. And, life-saving, 3D-printed equipment is coming to some Syrian hospitals.

My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is RL Carpentier III, author of the book Our Lady of the Overlook. Rodney is a lifelong writer of stories and poems and songs and now, novels. As a kid he and his mom would try to plot whodunits on Sunday afternoons; in middle school he and his friends tried to develop their own superhero comic book; and in college he wrote song lyrics for his pop-punk band Gone Ashley. But he's had a novel stuck in his head for the last 20 years and it's about time for him to let it all out. Professionally, he has been a storyteller throughout his long law enforcement career. He has written factually about the mundane to the maniacal. He has told his peers, his bosses, and juries about what he has seen and done, what he's investigated and what he's able to prove. It is a procedural and clinical style; something he has brought over to his fiction writing. So, at this crossroad of his life and career, well into his 40's and in the downswing toward retirement, he is going to live out his dream of being a writer. He has his wife and daughter in his corner and the whole world for an audience. In my book review, I stated Our Lady of the Overlook is the first in a trilogy of murder suspense novels. And talk about suspense! From the beginning, RL makes the reader wonder who did it and why. We meet Mike Ellis, a man who has come home to be a cop - but remains in his dead father's shadow, a man who was Police Chief of the town before his heart attack. Before long, he is sucked into a murder investigation that is quite like his father's first murder case and one that has long since gone cold. Despite no evidence, Mike believes that the two have to be related. But with a 40-year span between them, will he ever be able to prove his theory? But more importantly, will he get the chance? There are those on the force who want to set him up for failure - retribution against his father. And his personal ghosts work against him as well. This novel is full of intrigue, half-clues, secrets, and trauma, and the ending will leave you wanting more! If you crave more moments of feeling awake and fully present, this episode reveals how aliveness is already available in the ordinary. I'll never forget a moment in Montana when everything felt so alive - the colors in the sky, my family laughing, the fire crackling. But soon I wondered, why can't I feel this at home too? That question led me to discover that aliveness isn't rare, it's simply missed when we rush past it. Today, I share how to notice it more often. Action Steps: Practice presence: Slow down and let yourself truly notice small things. Savor simple rituals: Linger over coffee, watch the sunset, or enjoy your first bites of dinner. Put the phone away: Create space to be fully there with people and experiences. Use your breath: Take slow, intentional breaths to reconnect with your body. Invite joy daily: Play music, dance, or hug someone a little longer. Join the email list for Take The Exit - Be the first to step inside the story! More from Megan YouTube | Website | Instagram

Once you let anger into your life, once you let it motivate or animate you, it's very hard to get rid of. It's hard to find a substitute that measures up. It's hard to let it go.
