In this episode, Britton and Daniel Towner discuss Daniel's journey from a non-church background to becoming a pastor and pioneer in Philadelphia. Daniel shifted from an acting career in New York City, to a pastoral role in ministry, including a role as a director of discipleship, and is now pioneering a simple movement. The conversation highlights the importance of faith, community, and the pursuit of lost souls. He emphasizes the importance of prayer, the challenges of support raising, and the transformative power of being present in the community. Daniel discusses the significance of listening to God's guidance and the need to avoid comparison with others in ministry. He encourages listeners to embrace their unique calling and to be open to the work God is doing in their lives and communities.
A Holy DiscontentSeries: For the City Preacher: Rev. Thomas HinsonDate: 8th September 2024Passage: Nehemiah 1:5-11
Preaching for the Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Ariell Watson Simon offers a reflection on God meeting us in our spiritual hunger: "That feeling of holy discontent doesn't mean that yesterday's prayer didn't work; it means that God is building a relationship of trust with you. Just like the Israelites' physical hunger kept them looking to the heavens for manna, our spiritual hunger turns us toward God. Hunger grounds us in the everyday. It's in this everyday hunger that God will meet us, giving us this day – each day – our daily bread." Ariell Simon, M.Div. is a healthcare chaplain who lives, writes, and serves in central Missouri. Ariell was raised in the evangelical church, which instilled in her the value of scripture and the importance of lay ministry. After falling in love with Catholic Social Teaching as an undergraduate student at Loyola University Maryland, she entered the Catholic Church in 2011. Ariell received a Masters of Divinity from Boston College School of Theology and Ministry in 2018. She completed her chaplain residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, focusing on psychiatry and spiritual care. A Holy Discontent Philippians 3:1 - 4:1 Sunday (4-14-24) night Bible Study
What breaks your heart? What do you long to see done differently in our world? Join us for the start of our series The Power of Everybody as we learn how to pay attention to our God-given discontent. Speaker: Ryan Leak, Teaching Pastor
“The message of Jesus is not to maximize your strengths and minimize your weaknesses; rather, it is in your weakness that God's strength is made perfect within you.“ - @andrejosiah We started on our Vision Series, with an overarching theme of A Holy Discontent, challenging us to confront the shallowness of our spiritual discontent in a culture that craves immediacy and the temporary. Ps. Andre spoke on the very heart of discipleship today, which is to take our spiritual formation seriously. A dangerous fallacy in our approach to life with God occurs when we believe that being strong in one area will somehow compensate for weakness in another, but God wants us be like Christ in all aspects of our lives. Let us take some time to reflect on this question: “Where am I unlike Jesus?”Our formation must address the areas where we are not formed in Christ. We pray that we will approach our spiritual growth with intention, taking active steps to be molded into the image of Christ and live out our faith daily.
Get The FREE Seasonal Journal Week PDF: https://susanbeth.com/winter-journal-freebie In this episode of the Susan Beth podcast, Susan explores a concept she calls 'holy discontent.' She invites listeners to interpret those nagging feelings of desiring something more as divine nudges, inviting them to a richer, more purposeful life. From the monotony of January to the joys of February, Susan encourages you to experience every facet of your journey deliberately. She underscores the importance of being present in every season of life and transforming unfulfilled desires into spirit-guided action. Susan aims to debunk the misconception that we lack resources or capabilities, sharing instead that we possess everything we need to realize the lives we were designed to live. Framing signs of discontent as divine, she guides listeners toward the pursuit of a higher purpose Exploring the connection between personal discontentment and divine calling, she takes inspiration from biblical narratives that depict temporal suffering and eternal reward, emphasizing that circumstances don't define God's power. She encourages listeners to surrender control and let God manifest the desired transformation in their lives. Susan's ultimate objective is to create a communal space that inspires listeners to embrace and navigate their seasons of life with gracious faith and divine trust. The result is a journey that aligns hearts and minds to see heaven's traces in daily life. Moses is one of the most important figures in all of Scripture, and he is seen as a great liberator and titanic personality in history. Yet, when we really look at his story, we don't see someone who succeeded in an incredible effort by his own will, but through God's grace. We find someone who initially tried to do it his own way, but who had to learn to turn his discontent with the world into a holy discontent from being transformed by God's grace. In this sermon, Pastor Joel unpacks Moses's story and where see God act according to his pattern of grace.

01/29/2023 Pastor Jordan starts off our new sermon series, The Values of Hope and tackles the value of Holy Discontent with the story of Jesus in the Wilderness.
1. We live in a time of dry bones. The Tailbone Christian: Who just sits, and lets everybody else do the ministry in the church. - The Fingerbone Christian: Who are always pointing their finger at everybody else, not taking responsibility for their own actions. They blame everybody else for the circumstances they find themselves in. - The Jawbone Christian – Who runs off at the mouth … who puts his mouth into motion before his brain is in gear … who spreads gossip … who intentionally causes trouble by stirring up strife. - The Hipbone Christian – Who sits on his wallet every Sunday when the offering plate is passed. - The No Backbone Christian – Who has no convictions … wants to please everyone but Jesus… blends in with the world. These bones are dry - dead - lifeless. 2. Dry bones are confusing. There is a pattern of revival, and we may just be in it right now. The pattern of revival: 1)We are in trouble, crisis, or a Holy discontent. “I'm sick of the way things are” – Holy Discontent. 2) People begin to pray. 3) Prayer leads to presence of God. 4) Presence leads to surrender and repentance. (Renewal) Americans struggle to humble themselves and repent/surrender. 5) Surrender and Repentance leads to New Patterns Greater surrender acts as preparation for greater levels of God's presence. 6) New Patterns leads to groups of people (Remnants) contending for revival. 7) Remnants lead to Revival 8) Revival leads to Awakening. Crisis can be the gateway to revival. 3. Prophecy is speaking what God is saying, not what we are seeing. Speaking life over death is a powerful prophetic responsibility. The church is called to speak to dead things and call them alive. Arise Church is not a name, it's a prophetic declaration! Arise Church at Brandon! Arise Church at SouthShore! 4. These are the days of Revival. What will your role on revival be?
In the wisdom of the church throughout Christian history, Advent has been set aside as the first season of the Christian liturgical calendar. Derived from the Latin word "adventus" and the Greek word "parousia," it means "coming" and refers to the coming of Christ. Christians recognize the four weeks of Advent as a time to anticipate the birth of the Christ child and the second coming of Christ, as well. This Advent season, as we anticipate the coming of God made flesh in Christ Jesus, we dare to relinquish control of our planned timelines, over-scheduled calendars and daily trappings and habits of life. We accept the invitation to ponder, behold, listen, dwell, abide, trust, wait and watch as God's life-altering activity of the redemption of the world takes place again in real time and space. Each week, Pastors Ray, Theresa, Luis, Kelly and Andy will unpack these themes in a roundtable discussion format. These are supplemental to the sermon series, “Watching and Waiting” and will run for the four weeks prior to Christmas Day. Week 3 - Scripture Anchor: Jeremiah 33:14-16 Synopsis: Watching and waiting on the fulfillment of God's promises are hard. Especially if you have been watching and waiting for so long and see all of the chaos around you in the world. Jeremiah's promise of the coming of the Messiah happens in the midst of chaos, turmoil and upheaval. Our holy discontent is seeing what the Lord has promised He will do and looking around at the current state of the world and our lives. The Psalmist refrain of "how long, oh Lord?" is an honest response to our holy discontent. When will the Lord make things right? When will God deal with sin, injustice, chaos, tyrants, war, disease and death? Our holy discontent is perceiving the gap between what is and what is promised...and so, we cultivate a posture of trusting the Lord while we watch and wait for the fulfillment. "The hopes and fears of all the years are met in Thee tonight."
