Born and raised in Iowa, Davies would soon begin playing music and finding inspiration as to what kind of art he wanted to create and make a mark with and that would eventually become TFULC282! On this podcast Davies tells us about his growing up in Iowa listening to the powerful groups coming out at the time, touring with Sun City Girls and releasing a record with them, TFULC282, being one of the earliest bands to sign to Matador Records in the 90s, his solo work and much more!
slight departure from the usual (?) format -- this week's show features a longish conversation with Will York, author of the newly released 'Who Cares Anyway : Post-Punk San Francisco And The End Of The Analog Age' (Headpress). If you've longed for an exhaustive overview of the ups & downs of Flipper, Sleepers, Tuxedomoon, Minimal Man, Toiling Midgets, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, Caroliner, Zip Code Rapists and many other crucial figures in Bay Area underground music history, today's your lucky day. You're even luckier if you wanted to hear 2 guys talk about it endlessly.
In Who Cares Anyway: Post-Punk San Francisco and the End of the Analog Age (Headpress, 2023), Will York draws on over 100 interviews with musicians, artists, and scene participants as well as zines and other ephemera from the time period to chronicle post-punk San Francisco. York starts with the Punk Era and moves through Post Punk, Hard Core, the Eighties and into the Nineties, to explore the golden age of analog DIY culture, from the dark cabaret of Tuxedomoon and Factrix, the apocalyptic sounds of Minimal Man and Flipper, the conceptual humor of Gregg Turkington's Amarillo Records; through to the subversive pop music of Faith No More, the left-field experimentalism of Caroliner, Mr. Bungle, and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, and much more. It's a tale full of existential drama, tragic anti-heroes, dark humor, spectacular failures--and even a few improbable successes. In addition, York has a companion podcast to delve further into the scene and the interviews. Rebekah Buchanan is a Professor of English and Director of English Education at Western Illinois University. Her research focuses on feminism, activism, and literacy practices in youth culture, specifically through zines and music. Learn more about your ad choices. Originally situated in Iowa, Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 established themselves in the Bay Area in the late '80s. Clattery, complex, and super musical, TFUL282 combined tight songcraft with rough edges, pulling from spaghetti western tropes, absurdist poetry, and spiraled noise rock to create a singular body of work. On this episode, Marc and John drop the needle on The Natural Finger, the band's 1990 7" EP and sort out what makes it tick in its unique fashion. About The Spindle: The 7-inch record isn't just a format—it's an art form. On each episode of The Spindle podcast, music writer Marc Masters (Pitchfork, The Wire, Bandcamp) and music historian (and music maker) John Howard dive into a great 7-inch, dissecting its background, impact, and the reasons why it stands out as a small plastic piece of music history. Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 is the sound of spongy pop music hitting a brick wall. Playfully weird and fuzzy, this group of pop deviants has annoyed and delighted since 1986. Even though the band hasn't released any new music in ten years, Thinking Fellers fit right in at Asbury Lanes (yes, a bowling alley) on opening day of the All Tomorrow's Parties festival, inciting the weekend's rowdiest crowd. Recorded on Friday, September 30, 2011.
