Let's face it. Most rock documentaries suck. But not BORN INNOCENT: THE REDD KROSS STORY. Why? Lots of reasons. There's the great music, of course. And the way it's sweet instead of cloying and self-effacing where it could be self-serving. But mostly? It's the joy of listening to two funny guys telling a good story that's worth hearing. Well, this week we have one of them on the show: Steven McDonald. A true lifer who's been doing it since he was eleven (ELEVEN?!?) — he also happens to be one of the best rock bassists out there (AND an all around swell guy). On this episode we talk to Steven about “Crazy Horses”, Moose lodges, his brother Jeff, misbegotten childhoods, runaways, THE Runaways, Black Flag, Rodney Bingenheimer, taking a beer can in the face for the Melvins, comparing notes with Tommy Stinson, Air Supply's gangster manager, and the I-told-you-so's of life.

Before January wraps, let's celebrate that 39 years ago this month on January 18, 1986, the Replacements got banned for life from SNL. In the middle of playing "Bastards of Young" on live TV, singer Paul Westerberg yelled to guitarist Bob Stinson, "Come on, F*cker!" during this guitar solo. In a combo platter of VIDEO and audio featuring one of our favorite guests, Tommy Stinson tells the story of yet another rowdy New York incident when the band played at the legendary CBGB. When the God of Thunder, Gene Simmons from KISS, walked in the Replacements decided that being on their worst behavior was exactly what the occasion called for. WATCH HERE: https://youtube.com/shorts/FbcKOyA7mAA Tommy's on tour! In this episode, the Minneapolis kid who grew up playing bass in one of rock 'n' roll's most notorious bands talks about wearing dresses while opening for Tom Petty; Rock in Rio with Guns N' Roses in front of 500,000 fans and not being able to hear a thing; and the weather-induced fear of encountering a TORDANO on the road. Looking up and out during performances, recording after business hours, and the $80 a month Strava membership. Danny Bengston (Together Pangea) "Since they began jamming back in William's Santa Clarita bedroom, Los Angeles indie band Together Pangea have continually challenged themselves with each subsequent offering. Jelly Jam [2010] poured the gasoline, Living Dummy [2011] struck the match, and Badillac [2014] lit the fire with its revved-up nineties rock-inspired flames. Along the way, fan favorites like “Sick Shit,” “Badillac,” and “Offer” would rack up millions of Spotify streams, while the group received support from Consequence of Sound, Pitchfork, MTV, Stereogum, and more. Following the 2015 release of The Phage EP, produced by The Replacements' Tommy Stinson, these working class boys embarked on the journey to what would become 2017's Bulls and Roosters, which evidenced their growth as a tried-and-true rock band with just the right amount of “brattiness,” as they like to say. Together Pangea—William Keegan, Danny Bengston, and Erik Jimenez—return in 2021 having made the most of 2020's turbulence by writing and recording DYE, an upbeat, undeniable collection of hooks, anthems, and power-pop garage-rock catchiness that is unmistakably the album of their career.DYE is an amalgam of the band's last three records: the inward looking and self-pleasing experimentation of 2017's Bulls and Roosters, the frantic and scream-y Badillac with its inspiration from emotionally raw grunge, and the 50's pop heavy 2011 album Living Dummy. After more than a decade as Together Pangea, the band know how their bread is buttered and made an effort to focus on what they know they do best." In this episode, Craig marks the 40th anniversary of The Replacements' iconic album Let It Be. He explores how the 1984 release broke new ground for alternative rock, blending punk energy with heartfelt introspection. Craig discusses the album's enduring influence, with tracks like "I Will Dare" and "Unsatisfied" showcasing the band's raw emotion and rebellious spirit. As he reflects on its lasting impact, Craig highlights how Let It Be remains a touchstone for both fans and musicians, cementing The Replacements' legacy as pioneers of the indie rock scene.Shawn shifts the focus to one of his favorite albums from the last 20 years, Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago. He dives into the emotional depth and haunting beauty of Justin Vernon's debut, discussing how its sparse production and introspective lyrics created a sound that resonated with listeners on a deeply personal level. Shawn explores how For Emma helped redefine the indie folk genre, influencing a generation of artists with its raw vulnerability and atmospheric soundscapes.Together, Craig and Shawn explore the power of these two transformative albums—one celebrating a legacy and the other shaping a new era of music. Whether you're a fan of raw, heart-on-sleeve rock or intimate, soulful folk, this episode is a celebration of the timeless music that continues to inspire.

In 1984, The Replacements were gaining a reputation as fun live punk band, always delivering loud, raucous tunes with setlists full of covers and aggressive originals. They intentionally thwarted management's efforts to get them on bigger labels by sabotaging shows they knew record company reps would be attending. The Minneapolis quartet of Paul Westerberg on vocals, Bob Stinson on guitar, Tommy Stinson on bass and Chris Mars on drums carved out a loyal following and had begun to win over fans around the country thanks to opening for REM. But Westerberg's songwriting, especially his lyrics, were too strong to be for only those moshing around through a drunken haze. With Let It Be, the band explores more personal themes (Unsatisfied, Answering Machine, Androgynous) and captured more melody than they had previously. They still had plenty of straight ahead punk songs (We're Comin' Out, Tommy Got His Tonsils Out, Gary's Got A Boner) but also tried to empathize with those who might not understand the world around them and how to relate (Sixteen Blue). Westerberg's lyrics are personal and poignant and still resonate to this day. Plus, there's a KISS cover song on the album so what's not to like? We didn't find this record until later in life but if you're unfamiliar, I think you'll like a lot of what you hear as we delve into deep topics we don't always weigh in on thanks to this punk classic. We also talk about procrastination, Elvis Costello, the need to let ideas simmer, collaborating on a show, making an album, the meaning of music, the tricks to productivity, and the joy of baby steps. Bio: For two decades, Nicole Atkins has created her own brand of spectral American rock & roll. She's an old-school torch singer for the modern world, funneling her award-winning songwriting chops and genre-spanning influences — including psychedelic rock, Muscle Shoals soul, the pop grandeur of Roy Orbison, and the dark drama of Nick Cave — into six albums that have earned a global audience. Regularly featured on year-end "best of" lists by Rolling Stone, NPR, and The New York Times, Atkins has collaborated with artists from across the musical spectrum, including David Byrne, Chris Isaak, Spoon, Elvis Costello, Tommy Stinson, and the Old 97's. The title track of her major-label debut album won The ASCAP Foundation Sammy Cahn Award, and her songs have appeared in prime-time TV shows like Dexter, national ad campaigns for American Express, and on the Billboard charts, with tracks like "Domino" becoming Top 40 AAA hits. A road warrior who has performed everywhere from Carnegie Hall to Late Night With David Letterman, Atkins is also a professional illustrator and painter whose work has appeared in The Wall Street Journal and No Depression.

But let’s just say that Tim by The Replacements is certinly a record that I’ve never gone long without listening to since it’s release in 1985.Yet I must be honest when I say that my all time favorite Replacements record is actually the previous album, Let It Be, but I’ll concede that Tim is a better collection of songs. How is that possible? Let It Be had a powerful sound. Tim has always suffered from a thin, muddy mix that was certainly fine enough that it didn’t afffect my overall love of the record. Tommy Stinson in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.tommystinson.com/ Stinson's latest venture is Cowboys in the Campfire. A duo with Chip Roberts, their debut album ‘Wronger' is perhaps the most ‘American' album he has ever made, its ten songs riding a giddy trail of twang and grit, melody and (mostly lyrical) mayhem. The very first song, ‘Here We Go Again', sets the tone; Stinson on ukulele, singing about the ardours of creativity, while horns swell and the only hint of percussion is from the tapping of feet by the musicians in the room. Stark and immediate, it is like sitting smack in the middle of a maelstrom.

What were you doing when you were 14? I bet it wasn't playing bass in one of the most important bands in rock history. Tommy Stinson's career has gone in many directions since those impressionable days, all of it good. After the implosion of the Replacements, Tommy eventually joined Axl Rose in Guns N' Roses while also releasing solo and Bash & Pop albums. His newest project is a pairing with guitarist Chip Roberts called Cowboys in the Campfire and it's laid back and excellent. Tommy's as rock and roll as it gets and seen just about everything. We touch on a lot of it here including reunions, the Hall of Fame, Chinese Democracy and more. Enjoy!  www.tommystinson.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

With tonight’s show being the last broadcast of June, and especially as it is also the last day of the month, it’s pretty clear that it needed to be a second quarter recap. There’s over two hours of great music that has come out in the last three months, similar to the first quarter recap show of March 31. The material ranges from the fantastic power pop of Paint Fumes and Jagger Holly to veteran rockers such as Ian Hunter and The Waco Brothers. There’s some rootsy rock and roll from Tommy Stinson, Deer Tick and The Baseball Project. The music comes from not only the usual US, UK, and Canadian artists but also from Australia, Austria, France, and Germany.  As for this week’s “52 weeks of Teenage Kicks” series, I have a very special cover by German punkers Die Toten Hosen. Way back in the early 90s they had a fantastic covers record called Learning English, Lesson One, where they invited members of the original bands to assist them with their remakes. 2017 saw the relese of Learning English, Lesson Two that continued that format. Wronger finds Cowboys in the Campfire embracing the sort of stripped down twangy Americana such band name suggests. It's the latest left turn in a career full of them. Tommy Stinson's musical career began in his pre-teen years, courtesy of bass gifted by older brother, Bob. Joined by Paul Westerberg and Chris Mars, The Replacements would ultimately become one the 80s most influential acts. In the years since the band's 2021 dissolution, Stinson has gone on to play with Guns N' Roses and Soul Asylum, while pursuing his own solo ambitions. Hosted on Acast. This week’s episode is another show consisting of material I’ve been a bit obsessed with around the Hudson compound. The first half is primarily new or new-ish material. The tribute to Justine Covault continues with tracks off the brand new Justine and the Unclean album, The Signal Light, along with new tunes by Lydi Loveless, Kate Redgate, Tommy Stinson’s Cowboys in the Campfire, and a great Alice Cooper cover by veteran rockers Zero Boys. The second half of the show is dominated by older records that I’ve recently picked up. Many were originally owned by my buddy Phil who had his semi-annual record sale last weekend. But I also have included a couple of reissues of records that I’ve been trying to acquire for years. The Lyres On Fyre, for example, was the very first truly independant record I’ve ever owned, and I desperately needed a copy to replace the one I lost decades ago. And then there’s Double Nickels On the Dime, the classic double album by Minutemen. Going for big bucks on the used market, SST finally pressed some more copies, and I just could not resist!  Of course, there’s also this week’s installment in the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” […]

In this episode, Nick gets into a lively chat with Jim Ryan, journalist from Forbes and The Daily Herald. They dish on Jim's interviews with the legendary Stewart Copeland from The Police, Tommy Stinson from The Replacements, and Black Sabbath's very own Geezer Butler. Then, brace yourself for a crazy tale from Nick about last month's Janet Jackson concert in Tinley Park. The story's got everything: a packed-to-the-rafters concert, no parking spaces left, an unexpected strip club detour, abandoning a car at Target, and walking for miles, just to catch the last snippet of the concert. Crazy, right? To wrap things up, Esmeralda Leon and Nick respond to a Magic Megaphone request and it triggers a laugh-out-loud chat about game shows. They gab about "Family Feud," "Password," the quirky Canadian game show "Talk About," and "Supermarket Sweep," which Esma just can't get enough of. [EP150]

There’s the return of a ton of veteran artists, including Rancid, Graham Parker, The Aquadolls, and Joan Jett.  Most importantly, at least for me, is the brand new project by Tommy Stinson. Over the last few years he’s been touring with his pal Chip Roberts under the Cowboys in the Campfire moniker, and today sees the release of their debut album, Wronger. While a bit quieter than we’re used to from the former Replacements bass player, it’s still quite a record from the hardest working member of the legendary band.  Of course, we begin with the latest in the “52 Weeks of Teenage Kicks” series, and this time it is nt a new release.
