I've got the OSCAR fever, hope you got it too! On a returning ERIC ROBERTS is the MAN we're joined by guest - and ON CINEMA, AT THE CINEMA expert Zach Weiss - to discuss Eric Roberts' recent appearance on the 12th Annual Oscar Special. We go deep on the history of the bizarre franchise created by Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington, as well as its various spin-offs, and try to explain just why the heck people would spend hours of their time watching this stuff (a questions we're VERY familiar with on ERITFM!). Just in case that doesn't whet your whistle we also have a look at an episode of the action espionage TV show BURN NOTICE directed by Renny Harlin and featuring an ALL-STAR cast including Dean Cain, Kristanna Loken, and - of course- ERIC ROBERTS! All this and the latest Eric Roberts news IF YOU CAN HANDLE IT! The post Episode 269 – Eric Roberts is the Man – 12th Annual On Cinema Oscar Special (2025) (/w Zach Weiss) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

Gregg Turkington, arguably more widely known from his guise as comedian Neil Hamburger, is possibly best described as a comic himself, but also as a cultural critic and commentator. Having spent his younger years as a zine publisher, a musician in multiple bands, and running a label, he has since risen to greater prominence as a collaborator with Tim Heidecker in On Cinema at the Cinema, a web series put out by Adult Swim, among many other endeavors. Hear how songs by Jimmy Webb, Leonard Cohen, and Frank Sinatra influenced his work, including his newest record, Neil Hamburger Presents: Seasonal Depression Suite, which is out now on Drag City.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today we welcome back Paul Keelan of CINEMATIC UNDERDOGS to discuss the abrasive, deliberately alienating character studies of Rick Alverson. Alverson works with alt-comedy icons like Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington, but his films are anything but normal comedies— whatever you call them, they're dark, uncomfortable, and follow people you probably don't want to spend much time with. We're discussing two of his best-known provocations (don't let the titles fool you): 2012's Tim Heidecker-starring THE COMEDY, and 2015's Neil Hamburger vehicle ENTERTAINMENT. This week, the Best in Show crew is full of Indie Spirit as they mingle on the carpet and out the back of the Film Independent Spirit Awards, where Zoe Lister-Jones, Jordan Firstman and the teams from Kokomo City and The Zone of Interest all stop by for chats about Cassavetes versus Altman, the secrets to a great director-producer relationship and epic movie dog moments. Finally, Neil Hamburger himself (On Cinema's Gregg Turkington, cast member in the John Cassavetes Award-winning Fremont) tells Mia and Gemma about the first award he ever won (and seems to keep on winning). Jared and Mike are joined LIVE via satellite by Gregg Turkington and Erik Paparozzi to discuss their new album; Neil Hamburger Presents: Seasonal Depression Suite! https://archive.org/download/ur-138-pv/UR%20138-pv.mp3
In this edition of arts24, we focus on one of the year's most buzzed-about movies on the festival circuit. A different spin on a refugee story, warm and offbeat, "Fremont" tells the story of a young Afghan woman building a new life in California. British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Jalali speaks to Eve Jackson about his amazing first-time actress Anaita Wali Zada, who five months before casting had been on an evacuation plane from Afghanistan, how he cast Jeremy Allen White and Gregg Turkington and why he found himself working mainly with a female team.
Gregg Turkington discusses his collaboration with Erik Paparozzi on the wonderful new album, Neil Hamburger Presents Seasonal Depression Suite, why a Christmas-themed concept record set in a chain hotel works so well, surveys, reviews, and why customers get so entitled at hotels and motels, Frank Sinatra's Watertown and David Berman's songwriting, serious artists who are very funny, the star-studded and collaborative nature of this release, Bob Dylan's Desire and working with Scarlet Rivera, other future plans, and much more.Supported by you on Patreon, Pizza Trokadero, the Bookshelf, Planet Bean Coffee, and Grandad's Donuts. In Babak Jalali's playfully eccentric FREMONT focuses on a beautiful and troubled 20-something Donya, an Afghan translator who used to work with the U.S. government and now has trouble sleeping. Each morning Donya (Anaita Wali Zada) leaves her tight-knit community of Afghan immigrants in Fremont, California. She crosses the Bay to work at a family-run fortune cookie factory in San Francisco. Donya drifts through her routine, struggling to connect with the culture and people of her new, unfamiliar surroundings while processing complicated feelings about her past as a translator for the U.S. government in Afghanistan. Unable to sleep, she finagles her way into a regular slot with a therapist (Gregg Turkington) who grasps for prospective role models. When an unexpected promotion at work thrusts Donya into the position to write her own story, she communicates her loneliness and longing through a concise medium: the fortunes inside each cookie. Donya's koans travel, making a humble social impact and expanding her world far beyond Fremont and her turbulent past, including an encounter with a quiet auto mechanic (Jeremy Allen White) who could stand to see his own world expanded. Tenderly sculpted and lyrically shot in black-and-white, Babak Jalali's FREMONT is a wry, deadpan vision of the universal longing for home. Babak joins us for a conversation on the moment he knew that casting an unknown actor, Anaita Wali Zada as Donya, his instinctual decision, in collaboration with cinematographer Laura Valladao would work, the calming effect of Gregg Turkington, and the joy he derived from his time spent in the Afghan community of Fremont, California. Hosts Andy Cush, Sam Sodomsky, and Winston Cook-Wilson are all staff writers at the online music publication Pitchfork, and all have deep knowledge and great chemistry when talking about these albums. Sodomsky in particular has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of these artists and their work. While they can get personal sometimes, most of their dialogue revolves around the music itself, which I find enjoyable. The albums they cover can range anywhere from hidden gems deep in an artist's discography or an absolute flop, both of which are fun to explore. Some episodes feature guests as well, ranging from comedians like Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington to musicians like Open Mike Eagle. Some great episodes to start out with are Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail, Aerosmith's Honkin' on Bobo, and Bob Dylan's Under the Red Sky. Each episode ranges from 50 minutes long to an hour and a half, and it does not need to be listened to in order. For anyone interested in music history, I could not recommend this podcast more. Content warning for some strong language and occasional drug references. Currently, the show seems to be on hiatus with the last episode coming out in July 2021, but there is a chance they could come back at some point. Similar podcasts include the 33 1/3rd podcast, 155, and the Album Year. All right, guys, that's all for this week but remember if you want to see the cover art, sources or the written transcript for this episode be sure to check out the show notes or KCSUFM.com. Simone Turkington is the quintessential example of creatively following ones passions. An epiphany on the dance floor let Simone back to her childhood love of parlour magic. After much intense training she is now one of very few female magicians. Simone has now been accepted by the prestigious magic castle and performs their regularly. Oh and by the way, she also happens to the wife of Americas number #1 funny man: Gregg Turkington aka Neil Hamburger When her father selected a deck of cards as his prize at a carnival shooting gallery, Simone was stunned by his boring choice. "It's a MAGIC deck of cards!" he told her. "I got it for you." Noting her enthusiasm for magic on television, he hoped to encourage her interest with this prize. And encourage it did. Using the deck and its instructions, Simone performed her first magic show at school assembly, aged 9, cementing her love of magic and performing from an early age. Years passed and magic faded away to make room for music fandom and seeing rock shows around the world which would be her focus for the next 20 years. But once the bands she followed had washed up, broken up and reunited again, so did Simone with magic. In her thirties with a husband and child under her belt, what better time in one's life to pursue the not-at-all lucrative path of a magician? Now living in Los Angeles, a far cry from Australia where she started, Simone was able to take classes at the world famous Magic Castle, a private club for magicians. She soon passed her audition to become a magician member and began performing both solo and as part of a rare female magic duo, Mystiki. A long time devotee to classy vintage styles, Simone brings the sights and sounds of the 60s to her magic, not often seen (unless you watch a lot of videos of magic from the 60s.) A mix of visual, card, and mentalism effects make up her repertoire. Simone is a member of the prestigious Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle where she performs in one of the main showrooms, The Parlour of Prestidigitation. For four years she was a board member for the Women Magicians Association and The Academy of Magical Arts' Women In Magic committee. She writes reviews of magic books, videos and props for The Linking Ring monthly magic magazine. Simone is available for strolling or close-up magic which sees the magician wowing guests at your party or event with intimate, one-on-one magical experiences, entertaining small clusters of people throughout the evening. Much of Simone's performance experience is in parlour magic which are larger effects than seen in close-up settings. Parlour shows are suited to moderately sized audiences for variety or cabaret shows in clubs or small theatres, but also homes or parties. Parlours were where magicians would entertain in Victorian homes.
The Late Era crew is joined by the hilarious and insightful Gregg Turkington (Neil Hamburger, On Cinema) to discuss a late-career landmark by Frank Sinatra. Best known for featuring Ol’ Blue Eyes’ immortal rendition of “Theme From New York, New York,” 1980’s Trilogy: Past, Present, Future is a surreal, self-referential, and strangely moving triple album organized through the lens of Sinatra’s own experience in show business. This means we get a selection of standards, some fresh takes on radio hits by Billy Joel and the Beatles, and… an operatic suite about interplanetary space travel and the crushing inevitability of death? We discuss all of this, plus a shocking tale of kidnapping conspiracy, a savvy bit of financial advice, and an expert round of celebrity impressions. Start spreading the news: It’s a Late Era classic. Please consider reviewing this podcast on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We invite you to join us for Season 2 Episode 3, coming April 8! Late Era is a production of Osiris Media. It is edited and produced and mastered by Winston Cook-Wilson. This episode was seemingly cursed! Damaged audio files, lost footage, crashed hard drives, laptop meltdowns. It's almost as though this episode didn't want to exist. Well, it does and now you have to deal with it. We apologise in advance. This week, Ash Frith (irregular wayward co-host) joins Paul and Eli for more thifty findings and incredible edibles. Eli gets to wrap his taste buds across a selection of sauces, crisps and, most importantly, juicy fat pickles. At least he is enjoying himself as all Ash and Paul can do is listen on in horror. Finally, we end this week's episode with an experiment. The Cheap Chaps put on their acting hats and attempt a performance of a new piece of writing called "Marion's Wish" (written by Tim Heidecker, Gregg Turkington and Mark Proksch)... As you can imagine, between their unrehearsed attempt and Paul's fat, stupid mouth, it doesn't go well. In fact they pretty much ruin it. Sorry. "America's Funnyman" Neil Hamburger is the disturbing comic creation of Gregg Turkington; deeply funny, vile and poignant in equal measure. Ordinarily reluctant to talk about his alter-ego, Gregg gradually uncovers his love for outsider art, and the qualities he considers genius. We learn about the origins of Neil in prank phone calls and fake live shows, the comedy he can't stand and why, and the utterly original concept behind his live albums.Over 30mins of extra content available exclusively to members of the Insiders Club include Gregg on being booed onto the stage supporting Tenacious D at Reading Festival, and how it meant no more to him than a crowd at Madison Square Garden chanting his name! We also learn the surprising basis to whom he won't attack and why, and find out why he considers interviews pointless... Mister America is the new film starring Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington. It's a documentary-style satire about an first-time political candidate named Tim Heidecker, that is, the character Heidecker has played for years now alongside Turkington as part of their movie show On Cinema at the Cinema. In case you don't already know, Heidecker and Turkington have created an incredible comedic universe involving their two movie-guy characters which spans a vanity spy show, Twitter, and now Mister America. FC Editor-in-Chief sat down with the duo to talk about how they put it all together, where cinema verité comes into it, and what they think of Alan Partridge.
I didn’t know if Tim Heidecker was going to show up for this interview, or if I was going to get his boorish, abusive, dim alter ego, Tim Heidecker. Luckily Tim Heidecker leaves Tim Heidecker in the “On Cinema” universe. That project he started with Gregg Turkington is comprised of an ongoing series called “On Cinema at the Cinema,” various spin-off series including “The Trial of Tim Heidecker,” special episodes, segments, tweets, songs, and now the feature film “Mister America.” In this half hour I ask Heidecker to lift the hood on his performance style and the evolution of his comedy from the brilliantly absurd “Awesome Show” with Eric Wareheim, to the super subtle realism of “Mister America.”
This week, we're seeing double. Jon and Will review Gemini Man, a new action-thriller-spy-clone film starring Will Smith from acclaimed writer and director Ang Lee. Known for its off-kilter shooting style and aggressively high frame rate, Gemini Man has critics and audiences torn, but where do the Cinemaholics stand? Also in the show, Will shares his thoughts on two other new films: Mister America and In the Tall Grass. And Jon briefly discusses his experience playing Borderlands 3 for Playstation 4. This week’s theme music is “Gemini Man,” which was composed by Lorne Balfe and can be found on the original soundtrack for Gemini Man. The leeeeeegendary Ryan and the leeeeeegendary Dave immerse themselves in the strange world of Neil Hamburger, the intentionally off-putting stand-up character created by comedian/actor Gregg Turkington. Joined by familiar faces like John C. Reilly and Michael Cera, Turkington and director Rick Alverson take us on a surreal, David Lynch-esque journey into the lonely mind of a uniquely twisted performance artist. Also, Ryan and Dave continue their discussion about modern comedy and "political correctness" that began with last week's review of "The King of Comedy", where Ryan does some John C. Reilly impressions and Dave coins the term "blackologist". Next week, Ryan's next pick brings perennial favorite Harvey Keitel back to the forefront where he belongs - "Bad Lieutenant"!

Rick Alverson’s new film THE COMEDY is not necessarily a comedy. Depending on your limits for satire, many scenes will make you laugh while you might be cringing or even angry at other scenes. As we follow 30-something Swanson (Tim Heidecker) in his privileged yet aimless leisurely days, the ante gets upped when he stands to inherit his Father’s estate. Forced with the first major change in life, he and his friends (among them Eric Wareheim, LCD Soundsystem frontman James Murphy and comedian Gregg Turkington a.k.a. Neil Hamburger) strive for connection and an understanding of the world – not by hip, gleeful emoting but through testing the limits of society and common taste with possible punishment at every turn. It’s a strong, timely film. Cinemad talks with Alverson about making the film and testing audiences for the right reasons.
