Alien Lanes by Guided By Voices, their first for Matador Records, expanded upon the lo-fi, hook-driven bursts of songs from previous release Bee Thousand. Its chaotic, collage-like structure packs 28 tracks into just over 40 minutes, thanks to the raw, four-track production gives the album an intimate, unpolished feel. Songs end abruptly, vocals are buried, guitars are out of tune, yet the melodies emerge from the fuzz with a mix of power pop charm and punk spontaneity.Widely considered one of their best works, Alien Lanes remains a cult favorite and a defining record of '90s indie rock. For the 30th anniversary of Superchunk's fourth album, FOOLISH, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Superchunk got their start in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989, they were becoming known for their catchy punk anthems and busy touring schedule. Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance had been a couple and formed Merge Records initially as a way to release their early singles, while releasing their full-length albums on Matador Records. Around the time of their third album, ON THE MOUTH, McCaughan and Ballance ended their romantic relationship, causing tension and uncertainty about the future of the band, as well as Merge. The inner-band turmoil impacted the songs they were writing, as McCaughan wrote lyrics from a vulnerable place while they also worked to expand their sound, incorporating more dynamics, new guitar textures and slower tempos. They booked studio time at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minnesota with Brian Paulson, who they had wanted to work with after hearing records he made with Slint and Unrest. Their breakneck three-day session resulted in FOOLISH, eventually released in 1994. In this episode, Mac McCaughan describes his intention to do something different musically with this record and how he was incorporating more clean guitar tones and space than ever before. Laura Ballance talks about hearing McCaughan's lyrics for the first time in the studio and how she felt attacked as she interpreted them as being about her or about their relationship. Jim Wilbur gives his perspective on this tumultuous time in the band's history, but how they were able to remain collaborative as a unit and write many songs quickly. From treating the band like a job to losing a day in the studio to writing on acoustic guitars to an ambitious and tense video shoot to the story behind the album cover to a breakup record with some of Superchunk's most enduring songs, we'll hear the stories of how the album came together.
Today we chat with the USA noise rock menace that is HUMAN IMPACT. The band contains ex members of Swans and Daughters but also Chris Spencer from Unsane and Jim Coleman from Cop Shoot Cop. Damon Arredondo is a son, a brother, a father, an entrepreneur, a dreamer, a brewer, and -- based on the four hours I spent with him in my basement studio -- an amazing human being. He's the owner and founder of Rizoma Liquid Creations, and he's my guest for Episode No. 119.Damon and I talked about growing up, family, heritage and culture, parenthood, collaborations, mental health, and beer, to just mention a few topics. We also talked about a few of Damon's favorite records, which were these:Sunrise over the Sea (2004), The John Butler TrioBalmorhea's Stranger (2012)Pedestrian Verse (2013), Frightened RabbitDirty Heads' Sound of Change (2014)Origin (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (2023), Kris Bowers*Rizoma continues to search for a location to call home here in Kansas City, and -- while that search continues -- Damon has been selected to participate in the Crafted for Action Conference in Atlanta next month. And if I may speak on behalf of Damon, he needs your contribution to see this important step in the process through. If you trust me when I say that Damon is good people, or if you enjoyed our conversation here on the podcast, or if you're just a kind/giving person at your core, please take a moment to learn a little bit more about this portion of Damon's journey to seeing his dream through. You can do so here.It was a privilege to meet Damon and an honor to share some time with him. I appreciate you being here and supporting the podcast, and if you are able to support Damon, well I appreciate you for that, too. Thank you.copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the audio samples contained within this episode. They are samples from a tune called, "Bassackwards" by Kurt Vile. The track is from his 2018 release, Bottle It In (c/o Matador Records), and I'm not going to tell you that the album is a badass record, but I will tell you that Mr. Vile is a lifetime member on the Board of Badassery. So take those tidbits and decide for yourself.*Damon loves the Stan Walker tune, "I AM" from this soundtrack, not necessarily the entire collection. I chose to list the soundtrack as part of his list just because I'm a dork like that and couldn't have a lone track listed all by its lonesome.

I'm so excited to to share this week's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast, which features a fascinating, deep yet kind of low-key conversation between two really talented people that you might not have expected to be paired up: Bob Odenkirk and Marcellus Hall. I'm guessing most people listening to this podcast will know who Odenkirk is. A longtime comedian and writer, he and his pal David Cross gifted the world some of the funniest TV ever created in Mr. Show With Bob And David, and if that was the only thing Odenkirk ever did, it'd be plenty. But of course the other really huge thing in his career is his portrayal of Saul Goodman on both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, two dramas that stand among some of the best TV ever. And I haven't even mentioned his books, the movies he's produced and directed, or the many things he's starred in. Without Bob, there would be no motivational speaker Matt Foley from SNL or any Tim and Eric Awesome Show. He's a legend, and he probably wouldn't want me saying that, which makes him a legend even more. Bob has also been a huge booster for things that he loves over the course of his career, including the aforementioned Tim and Eric plus things like the Birthday Boys and the unheralded movie Girlfriends Day, which he also stars in. And Bob has been a vocal fan of today's other guest, Marcellus Hall, for many years, too. Hall's music career goes back to the 1990s, when he was the frontman of the band Railroad Jerk, a clattering blues-punk band whose self-titled debut was one of the first albums ever released by Matador Records. Railroad Jerk is one of those bands that never quite hit it big, but those who saw them play live—I did once, in Madison Wisconsin—never forgot it. After that band broke up, Hall started another one, called White Hassle, and eventually started releasing albums under his own name while simultaneously enjoying a career as an illustrator—he's done a bunch of New Yorker covers and put out a really touching graphic novel a few years back called Kaleidoscope City. But this conversation was inspired by Hall's return to music after some years away. He just released a brand new album called I Will Never Let You Down. Here's the album's title track, which these guys chat about. In this lengthy and intimate conversation, which took place at Hall's New York apartment, he and Odenkirk start and end by talking about Jack Kerouac, and in between they go to a ton of interesting places. Sometimes these Talkhouse chats really feel like you're eavesdropping, and this is definitely one of those. They talk about Hall's work as well as Odenkirk's, and they dive into the notion that it gets harder as you get older to find that spark of inspiration. Odenkirk admits to some feelings of imposter syndrome, even after all of his success, and they both come across as guys who are still seeking, even after all these years. It's contemplative, but I think ultimately inspiring. This may be the last podcast you hear Odenkirk on for a while, as he's decided to stop saying “yes” to quite as many things as he did in the past. I love that, too. So get yourself some headphones and give this one your full attention—you won't regret it. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Marcellus Hall and Bob Odenkirk for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform, and check out all the goodness at Talkhouse.com. This episode was recorded by Mark Yoshizumi and produced by Myron Kaplan. The Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range. See you next time!
Last fall, we celebrated the 15th anniversary of Fucked Up's ‘The Chemistry of Common Life'– an era-defining punk LP that also just so happened to be the Canadian band's Matador Records debut. This Friday, our long-in-the-works orange vinyl 2xLP reissue will finally arrive on shelves. Find that HERE. Today, you can listen to a brand new digital EP, ‘44th & Vanderbilt,' which compiles three ‘ChemCom'-era session performances with No Age's excellent remix of “No Epiphany.” This episode of the Matador Revisionist History podcast finds FU members Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco in conversation with former Matador employee (and current World of Echo proprietor), Natalie Judge. They discuss making the record, recording nine months of overdubs, quitting their day jobs, and asking Michael Stipe to jump on the mic for a Feelies cover at the close of their 12-hour long record release show (spoiler: he passed).

Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pretty Girls Make Graves' sophomore album, The New Romance. Originally released in 2003, this was the Seattle punk band's Matador Records debut. After more than a decade out of print, the album will return to us in a limited edition white vinyl pressing in stores on November 3. A deluxe digital version also lands today on digital services and features two b-sides “Magic Lights,” newly available on streaming, and a cover of Bow Wow Wow's home-taping anthem, “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!” And what's more, singer Andrea Zollo and guitarist J. Clark guest on the latest installment of our Matador Revisionist History podcast series alongside producer Phil Ek and our host, Matt Sweeney. Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001. The members – Andrea Zollo, Derek Fudesco, J. Clark, Nick Dewitt, and Nathan Thelen – were already local underground luminaries, owing to their time in punk and hardcore bands like Death Wish Kids, Area 51, and Murder City Devils. The quintet released an EP, a handful of 7” singles, and a full-length, Good Health (Lookout! Records), before getting a cold email from Matador Records founder Chris Lombardi, who may or may not have read a positive review in Pitchfork. A deal was struck and the band decamped to the bucolic Bear Creek studio to track The New Romance with Ek. On this episode, Zollo and Clark go deep on the band's early years, talking influences (Drive Like Jehu, Ink & Dagger, Fugazi), rock band do's / don'ts, and what it's like to practice riffs in a freezing cold paper maché igloo.

It's so great having our buddy Nils Bernstein drop by the studio. Nils is a man of many skills, and we talk about his great new book, The Joy of Oysters. Nils is the food editor for Wine Enthusiast magazine, and he has written and developed recipes for places like Bon Appétit, Epicurious, GQ, and the New York Times. But Matt knows Nils best as a former music publicist, working with bands like Interpol, Stephen Malkmus, and Nirvana while holding key positions at Sub Pop and Matador Records. We talk about his musical past, what is was like being in the room when "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was first played live, as well as a deep love of the bivalve. We loved catching up with Nils Bernstein, and we hope you enjoy this conversation. Also on the show, Aliza and Matt talk about three things that are getting them excited right now, including chicken sandwiches at the Fly, Bawi Agua Fresca, a new NA beer, and Nightingale Ice Cream Sandwiches. This week, I wanted to go back and revisit an older episode. I recorded an interview with singer and songwriter Julien Baker in 2018. It was a few months after her second album came out. Since then, she's put out another solo album, called Little Oblivions, which was critically acclaimed. And now she's also a member of boygenius, which is the supergroup made up of Julien, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus. They've put out an EP and then, earlier this year, they put out their first full-length. Julien is a really interesting artist, and I think her songwriting is just heartbreaking, especially the song she takes apart for her episode. Here it is: Julien Baker is from Memphis, Tennessee. She released her second album, Turn Out The Lights, in October 2017, on Matador Records. The New York Times called her music "devastating" and Pitchfork gave the album Best New Music. In this episode, Julien tells the story of her song "Appointments," and how writing it helped her work through her thoughts around addiction, depression, and relationships. Julien also takes apart the track “Over,” which was written as part of “Appointments,” but then split off as a separate track. For more, visit songexploder.net/julien-baker.

Learn more about this episode at www.kexp.org/podcasts/el-sonido/.] Support the show: http://kexp.org/elsonidoSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[Enjoy our podcast this week that we share with our sister Maremel Network podcast, Creative Innovators.] Dick Huey claims that his career jumps have been "educated luck." "Because they they are luck. And I'm, I'm I don't ever pretend that I have more information than everybody else does. But I think I'm good at identifying opportunity. Joe Strobl joined Badass Records Podcast for episode #16, and I'm not sure what we didn't cover: being engaged, smoking briskets, Anthony Bourdain, pro wrestling, Wakarusa, high school, family, Chiefs season tickets, collecting vinyl, Bruce Springsteen, Swedish visas (or the lack thereof). You know. The typical Tuesday-evening fodder.Joe chose My Morning Jacket's Z, The '59 Sound by Gaslight Anthem, and everybody's favorite Wilco record, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, as his initial dabbles into records of badassery.Early in our conversation I called Joe, "something of a unicorn," and later supposed that perhaps he was striped. He said it was a testament to his family going through stuff together and having that bring them close together. That sentiment hasn't left me since and I don't imagine it ever will.I barely know Joe. He's a friend of my youngest younger sister and we've only really seen each other at gatherings for a number of years. He's always been a sweetheart in my mind, though, and the kind of human he has always struck me as being now resonates as certain truth, and I can't help but tie that to his upbringing. It in fact makes me hopeful that I am perhaps a little ways down the path to raising quality people that will always have a good relationship with their family and always be kind to those that they meet while out in the world.Joe owed me nothing, but he gave of his time, nonetheless. He took from the busy vault that is his soon-to-be-married life, and drove to my house to talk music for the better part of three hours, and for that I am grateful. When I really decided to roll with this project, I had an undecipherable feeling pushing me forward and I think that that feeling was this notion that talking to one another face to face about our lives and the twists and turns in them carries with it a good bit of worldly medicine. And I think a good bit of worldly medicine has felt something along the lines of necessary for the past 26 months, if not the last six years. So, that's the unconscious impetus here, I guess; the ingredients and the steps for doing a cool thing exist, and if it's potentially mutually beneficial, why not do it.Someone told me a couple of months ago that this project is "a brilliant idea and the world needs more music love and such if it's ever going to heal and thrive, again. I know you can make this something truly great and you are well on your way."I don't know how much of that is true, but I hope all of it is. I love that sentiment and love the person that delivered it.I also love Joe Strobl for hanging out with me and being a part of whatever mix this is."Thanks for stopping by. And, please: Enjoy yourself."copyright disclaimer: I do not own the rights to the intro/outro audio. They are samples from Kurt Vile's "Wedding Budz" off of his It's a Big World Out There (And I Am Scared) EP from 2013, c/o Matador Records. You should get you some Wakin On a Pretty Daze (Deluxe Daze [Post Haze]) stat. It's good for the soul.Bet.
In our final episode for Season 2, we listen to some raw tape that didn't make the Julien Baker episode. And we're joined by not one but two fans. Allison, a teenage fan, from Louisiana, shares how Julien's music helped her through her own bouts of depresson during the pandemic. And Azin Samari, a documentary editor on "The September Issue"—the award-winning film about Vogue magazine, Amazon docu-series "Lorena" and more recently, Hulu's "Sasquatch." Azin is currently working on a documentary about the refugee crisis. She discusses her experience with religion, editing for documentary, and its similairities to editing for audio. Thanks to Matador Records for use of the song "Appointments." And Katie Nelson from Grandstand Media for support with music clearance. A big, big thank you to the many Julien Baker fans that reached out. We could only pick one but feel free to record a voice message and I promise to play it on a future mini-episode. And of course to our guest Allison, thank you for sharing the music in your head with all of us in the world — it's a truly special thing. Links to the other episodes discussed — Black Belt Eagle Scout, Ezra Furman, Travis and Lucy Dacus. This week on the show, we're joined by Chicago indie trio Horsegirl—Penelope Lowenstein, Nora Cheng and Gigi Reece. Their new album, Versions of Modern Performance, out now on Matador Records, echoes classic indie rock—think Sonic Youth (after all, Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley guest star on one song), Dinosaur Jr, The Clean, and The Breeders. But what really makes it such a compelling listen is the interplay between these three young people. Horsegirl does everything as a group, from answering emails to taking meetings, so naturally all three members join host Jason P. Woodbury to dig in, discussing high school, how the pandemic solidified their band, working at Electrical Audio with producer John Agnello, and trading off on a Bass VI instead of a standard four-string. "Courtney Barnett" is a singer, songwriter, and musician from Melbourne Australia, known for her often deadpan singing style and witty lyrics.Courtney grew up in a musical household, with both her brothers playing guitar around her. When she was just 10 years old she asked her brothers to show her some chords and eventually begged her parents to buy her a guitar and lessons. As a left-handed guitar player Courtney actually started out learning on a regular right-handed guitar with conventional stringing, this basically meant she learnt how to play guitar chords backwards, which she can still do to this day. In her early career she played with a couple of indie bands around Australia, before writing her own songs and putting out her debut EP in 2012.As usual, there is a lot more to know about this fascinating artist. Join musicians Jay Purcell and Jesse Quigley as they discuss Courtney's work, life, career and spin some of their favorite tracks. To listen to the full episode, including the featured music, visit... signlradio.com"Roots to Grooves" is a production of SIGNL.https://www.signlradio.comhttps://www.instagram.com/signlradiohttps://www.twitter.com/signlradiohttps://www.facebook.com/signlradiohttps://www.mixcloud.com/signlhttps://open.spotify.com/user/96mhz6qfjoztxbl2dpm0uj903?si=aAZpsoEnRAKdx85kr1QWhg

Often criminally overlooked among the '90s indie-rock canon, Helium's The Magic City is one of the most colorful and unpredictable albums to come out of Matador Records' reign as kings of the genre. Episode #34: The term “A&R guy” is tossed around casually in the music biz — but what does the A&R division of a label do? A&R teams are traditionally charged with finding new talent, guiding artists through the recording process and connecting artists with producers, songwriters and other collaborators. Their insight can have huge influence on an artist and label. Over the years, the role has changed with the music business. This week, respected A&R dude and founder of Loma Vista Recordings Tom Whalley tells us about his journey from the mailroom at Warner Bros. Records to chairman of the company. He also offers his perspective on how the job has changed — and the differences between working A&R at an indie and major label. Then we talk with Louis Posen, founder of established indie label Hopeless Records, about why the term “A&R” isn't used at his company, and why a team approach to talent scouting works for them. Finally, Robby Morris, director of A&R at New York indie Matador Records, walks us through creative development at the label.
