401(k)s are not perfect, but they do provide a way for workers to begin their investing journey toward retirement. They can be complex and many books have been written about 401(k)s. In today's episode, we are going to simplify it for you.   In This Episode, We Look At: What, exactly, is a 401(k)? It is an employer-sponsored retirement plan and by "employer-sponsored" we do not mean that it is completely funded by the employer. This is a program through you can contribute a set portion of your earned income into investments, automatically, which means you do not have to rely on your memory to contribute. In traditional 401(k) plans, your financial contributions come out of your paycheck without being taxed, so every dollar contributed is credited to your investment account. These "pre-tax" contributions actual allow for more of your money to be invested without hurting your budget. For example, when you earn $100 you do not take home $100. Because of taxes, you take home something closer to $70 to $75. So if in your budget you can afford to part with $75 to invest for your future, you can have $100 going to work for you. From your paycheck, $100 is contributed, before taxes, which would have been $75 (take-home). Now, if the employer offers a matching contribution of 50%, you would have $150 invested for the "cost" of $75. (Your $100 plus their $50), that's a pretty good deal.   Resources and Links: Against The Grain -by Tim Rosen. Chapter Two provides additional wisdom and guidance in managing your 401(k).   Share Your Thoughts: If you have a question or comment about today's topic, we invite you to share your thoughts. In Jesus’ parable of the talents, one servant receives five talents, a second receives two talents, and the third servant receives one talent. Why did each receive a different amount of wealth?   In This Episode, We Look At: Today, we see that God has provided Christians with varying amounts of money for the purpose of occupying until he returns. The key wording in this passage is “…according to their several ability.” Everyone has their own level of faithfulness with God’s resources. We see in Scripture that this who are faithful “in that which is least shall be faithful with much: and that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” Luke 16:10 God knows our individual strengths and weaknesses. A storyline from the parable of the talents (Matthew 25) guides the reader. Here you have two faithful servants who double their lord's wealth, and one who hides the money. What were these servants' views on ownership?   In This Episode, We Look At: Whose wealth did they manage and multiply? In verse 14 the Bible says "… and delivered unto them his goods." They knew that, while they were in physical possession of riches, the wealth actually belonged to their lord. The financial resources we have, in a practical sense, is ours. Yet in the spiritual sense it all comes from God, and He calls us to honor Him in our finances. How is your personal view of ownership? Wealth is not always observed. The reality is that many Americans are quietly saving and accumulating wealth. You'll not see them living in the priciest houses in the neighborhood, nor driving the newest luxury car. Paycheck after paycheck they are willing to forgo the temporary pleasure that spending can provide, choosing rather to pay their "future selves."   In This Episode, We Look At: Accumulating wealth does happen quickly, which is a challenge as many of us today are conditioned to see and receive immediate rewards. A popular little book has the title, "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff!" While there is certainly truth to that—don't make a mountain out of mole hill, don't major in the minors… we also challenge you not to miss the little things that can change lives!   In This Episode, We Look At: The Tongue James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! What a difference a kind word can make in someone else's life! How often are we preoccupied with our own cares and easily miss the opportunity to simply say a kind word. Proverbs 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver Time James Boswell, the famous biographer of Samuel Johnson, often referred to a special day in his childhood when his father took him fishing. The day was fixed in his adult mind, and he often reflected upon many of the things his father had taught him in the course of their fishing experiences together.  It occurred to someone much later to check the journal that Boswell’s father kept and determine what had been said about the fishing trip from the parental perspective. Turning to that date, the reader found only one sentence entered: “Gone fishing today with my son; a day wasted.”  Treasure You may receive a cost-of-living pay increase of 2% and think it no big deal. Contact your HR Dept and increase your 401(k) contributions by that same 2%. A 2% increase on a $5,000 monthly income is $100 per month. Because it is pre-tax, every dollar goes into that 401(k). That could grow into an additional $500,000 in retirement for a 30 year old! Pay off debt quickly Most of us have heard the coffee example (brew at home). While it won't make you rich, taking that $2 a day (week days) and adding it to your minimum payment on a $2,000 credit card balance will pay it off in 36 months instead of 10 years.   Resources and Links: Christians Conquering Credit, Part 3, Blog post by Tim Rosen   Improve Your Faith and Finances: We encourage you to be mindful of the seemingly small things in your life that have the potential to do great good to both yourself and others.   Share Your Thoughts: If you have a question or comment about today's topic, we invite you to share your thoughts. The just shall live by faith. This truth is stated four times in Scripture. We also know that "without faith it is impossible to please God." Do we then demonstrate faithlessness if we accumulate savings and invest?   In This Episode, We Look At: In many areas of our lives we tend to lean on faith and ignore action We have a tendency to think that God will take care of us when considering our future financial needs.  That is true to an extent; (Matthew 6:33) but, what is our part in effort and labor? Consider the source of your income today It is very likely that you sought the Lord to help you and guide you concerning your present job. An interview was conducted during which you presented yourself and your qualifications. You had to prepare for your job or career with college education or prior work experience. Your ability to work comes from the Lord (Deut. 8:18). What about Pastors and Missionaries in retirement years? We think, "Surely God will provide for their future income because they gave their whole lives to His service." Our human minds look to a reward system in this life. But God's rewards for New Testament believers are in Heaven. There are countless blessings in serving the LORD. We see God do amazing works through changing lives and healing people. None of this excuses full-time servants from the need to plan for their future income through their own savings efforts, Missions boards, or Deacons' planning. How does planning and working for today's income differ from planning and working toward tomorrow's income? We know that our bodies of age, weaken, and are prone to injury and disease. We should plan now, put forth effort now, and save now, in order to have resources to provide an income LATER. The majority are aimed at our heart. Our actions come from our beliefs. Our beliefs come from our hearts. If we desire to improve our Faith and Finances, we need to address what we believe about money. Who is the true Owner, what does stewardship mean, and, what does stewardship look like in our world today? There are financial promises in God's Word that are contingent upon our faith and action. Understanding our true citizenship As Christians, we are primarily citizens of Heaven. Real treasure is what we lay up in Heaven; through both giving (Matt. 6:20) and in whatsoever we do unto the Lord.
