On Tuesday 4th October Dawn went for an NHS ADHD Assessment in Aberdeen. We couldn't believe that her long awaited diagnosis day was falling in ADHD Awareness Month, AND on the day we hit 100K downloads! Suffice to say, this was not the episode we thought we would be putting out! This is an Episode of two parts. As planned, we wanted to share this very important experience in real time, so began by the pre preparation and feelings the day before the big day to help others awaiting their assessment. Turns out the day was indeed big, but for the wrong reasons! If you've read the Press and Journal article, you will already know about this ordeal. We are very grateful to journalist Chloe Irvine for the fantastic feature on Dawn, highlighting how very broken the current system is: https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/fp/news/aberdeen-aberdeenshire/4876867/im-not-sure-ive-got-another-four-months-in-me-to-wait-rgu-students-desperation-for-adhd-diagnosis/This is NOT what we thought we would be sharing, and certainly not the answers that Dawn had hoped and hung on for. We understand that the underfunded and overstretched NHS is absolutely up against it! The real issue here is the lack of communication. Not laying out the timeline of the process is so incredibly damaging and unforgivable, and Dawn has made a formal complaint. Whilst Dawn recovers and gathers her strength, as she plans her next move she would like to thank every single one of you who has reached out with messages of support both before and after this horrendous experience. It is your encouragement that is giving her fuel to carry on fighting this battle. Though we had so wanted to put out a positive message to all of those seeking NHS ADHD diagnosis and treatment, sadly what we have instead is a podcast episode from two women who were not just let down by the system as children; but now who have also been let down by the broken NHS ADHD diagnosis process in their late 30s this ADHD Awareness Month. Dawn feels that the only positive is that in sharing her ordeal she is raising crucial awareness and letting so many others who are suffering similar know that that they are not alone. YOU ARE NOT ALONE. We hope for a better, quicker, more communicative and supportive diagnosis system by next ADHD Awareness Month. We conclude on a positive note, looking ahead to alternative ADHD diagnosis routes, and announcing the exciting things we have planned this month:If you follow our socials you will already know that Laura managed to hit her starsign deadline and get the brand new website up on 9th October! Trigger Warning: Due to Dean's unfamiliarity with Streamyard, Dean's adjustments to the sound result in him sounding a bit breathy. Be warned. Laura, Krysta and Dean abandon their usual format and this week's planned show on the Mongolian Death Worm to talk to their special guest, Shelah Grimm Erickson! Shelah is the only femal Native American comedian to have worked the biker rally at Sturgis South Dakota as well as being one half of the WBF Comedy Show and one of the guiding lights in Dean's comedy career. Shelah discusses comedy, it's importance to life, how she connects with crowds and her impressions of Dean as a young comic. Then they talk Native American beliefs, including the Native idea of the Wider World as well as the idea of lost souls returning to us. Join us for this amazing episode!
**Trigger Warning - Due to its subject matter, this episode contains racial slurs and discussion and descriptions of gun violence and sexual assault, including the assault of a child. Listener discretion is advised.** The Movie Bar, Episode 5: A Time to Kill Walks Into the Bar! The Diad and Bedroth head back to the American South as they discuss their first foray into the world of John Grisham in the 1996 drama/thriller A Time to Kill - as always, from the dual standpoints of casual moviegoer and legal expert. The film, based on Grisham's 1989 novel of the same name, directed by Joel Schumacher from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, stars Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey as, respectively, Carl Lee Hailey, a Black mill worker whose 10 year old daughter is raped by two white men on her way home from the grocery store, and Jake Brigance, the while lawyer who takes Carl's case after he fatally shoots the two men in the local courthouse. After taking Heiley's case, Brigance and his wife (Ashley Judd) and colleagues (Sandra Bullock, Brenda Fricker, and Oliver Platt) find themselves the targets of the local chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, summoned by the brother of one of Hailey's victims, Freddie Lee Cobb (Kiefer Sutherland), and must decide whether the risk of losing their reputation (and perhaps their lives) is worth the potential benefit of not only saving Hailey's life, but also of proving that a Black man can have a fair trial. The film also features Donald Sutherland as Lucien Wilbanks, a once-great civil rights lawyer and Jake's longtime mentor; Kevin Spacey as Rufus Buckley, the politically ambitious and experienced prosecutor; and Charles S. Dutton as county sheriff Ozzie Walls. Does the film stand the test of time? Does it hold up under legal scrutiny? Join us at the bar and find out! TRIGGER WARNING: Due to some of the graphic descriptions of abuse, this episode is not recommended for children, teens or anyone who is easily triggered when hearing stories of physical abuse. Were you raised in a home with domestic violence? Did you see your mother beaten or did you experience physical abuse as a child? Have you hit road blocks in your adult relationships or marriage and wonder WHY is this STILL happening? Do you feel like you escaped that life and should be on solid ground, but something still is not working? The answer could be that you've made a better life for yourself, but have not healed that inner child. This episode is the 3rd in a series bringing awareness around domestic abuse, and offering hope to land in health, on the other side. In this segment, we discuss children experiencing abusive home situations, how attachment styles form in those early years and follow the child into adulthood and often times, their adult relationships suffer due to lack of awareness of what makes all of us tick. The way we experience love is grounded in how your early caregivers cared provided safety and security. Your host, Christine Elizabeth shares her own story for the first time in a public forum, of how her childhood wounds from domestic violence effected her adult relationships and how today, she's finally thriving on the other side. Dave and Ian conclude their re-watch of Firefly. In "The Message," Mal and Zoe are sent the corpse of an old war comrade that isn't as dead as he first appears to be. In "Heart of Gold" an old friend of Inara's asks for help to protect one of her employees from a local landowner. And, in "Objects in Space," as the crew debate as to the best course of action to deal with an increasingly erratic River, Serenity is infiltrated by a bounty hunter looking to take in the Tams. They go on to discuss the series as a whole, and outline their plans for the next few months as they take a little summer break. Trigger Warning: Due to the events depicted in these episodes, there is an unavoidable discussion on threats of sexual violence as a storytelling device.

Trigger Warning: Due to sensitive and upsetting information shared in this episode. In this episode, You Okay, Sis?: Black Midwives & Mamas Matter with Cessilye R. Smith, Christina and Ekemini are joined by Cessilye R. Smith. Cessilye is a racial and maternal justice activist committed to tearing down walls of oppression and division to build bridges that lead to solution-based practices. Her journey began with her struggle with infertility and lack of awareness of her own body and then the eventual healthy, safe and beautiful births of her own children. Over the years she has witnessed time and time again the devastating impact systemic failures in healthcare, housing and economics have had on the human condition. Constantly bearing witness to the impact of structural racism and the violence of our collective inaction, while also being active in activism and faith circles has given her the ability to see the overlap in these structures and the drive to pursue justice in an unconventional way. She is passionate about finding commonalities and creating unlikely allies within her work, as Cessilye believes we are stronger when we can find the symmetry in our differences. Cessilye's passion for black women and for her community is what compelled her to co-found Abide Women's Health Services, an organization that exists to improve birth outcomes in communities with the lowest quality of care. Executive Director, activist, reconciler, speaker and educator are just a few of the many hats she wears. Cessilye resides with her husband and best friend Ramon and their three (one on the way) remarkable, world-changing children in Dallas, TX.
