In a thrilling update for "Star Trek" fans, Paramount+ has announced the renewal of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" for a fourth season, even as "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is set to conclude its journey with its upcoming fifth season. "Strange New Worlds," which premiered on Paramount+ in 2022, has quickly become a fan favorite. The series, set during the early days of Capt. Christopher Pike's command of the USS Enterprise, explores the adventures of younger versions of iconic characters like Spock, Uhura, and Kirk. The show's successful second season featured standout episodes such as a musical and a crossover with "Lower Decks," securing its place in Nielsen's top 10 list of most-watched streaming original series. Executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman expressed their excitement about the renewal: "On behalf of the cast and crew, we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together. We can't wait for you to join us on another season of exploration and adventure." On the animated front, "Star Trek: Lower Decks" will be wrapping up with its fifth season this fall. Since its debut in 2020, the series has carved a unique niche within the franchise by focusing on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos, blending humor with heartfelt storytelling. Despite the conclusion of "Lower Decks," creators have hinted at potential future adventures for the beloved crew. Jeff Grossman of Paramount+ praised both shows for their contributions to the "Star Trek" legacy: "'Strange New Worlds' has found the perfect blend of action, adventure, and humor, while 'Lower Decks' has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart." David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, echoed these sentiments: "'Lower Decks' and 'Strange New Worlds' are integral to the 'Star Trek' franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds. We are extraordinarily proud of both series." As "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" gears up for its fourth season and "Star Trek: Lower Decks" prepares for its final bow, the journey through the stars seems far from over for "Star Trek" enthusiasts.

Above the Title: A Colin Farrell Podcast

This week, the great Charlie Schumann joins us for the tenth anniversary spectacular look at notorious bomb Winter's Tale. A sweeping epic in which Colin Farrell plays an immigrant street thief who befriends a magic horse (?) and discovers he's a pawn in the eternal battle between God and Satan (??) and then lives for a century so he can fulfil his destiny (?????????????), the film was received with much derision and quickly forgotten save for the odd meme or two. We touch on its reputation and general failures, and along the way discuss the legacy of so bad it's good movies, the artistic crimes of writer/director Akiva Goldsman, what remains of Colin's dreamboat status, and just how the hell they got Will Smith to play Satan at this point in his career. “I think what's interesting about healing, psychological healing, is there's always a narrative that helps. So sometimes when you go to therapy, and you tell a story, and in the story, you locate your despair, and it's a knot, and then with the therapist, you work through the knot, you feel better. And was all the pain really attendant to that knot? Or did you just kind of load up that knot with some of the despair that comes from being alive and then you kind of work through it and that story helps you live life better. And I think that's true also this idea of how we look at the different personality states and we can name them and we can give them ages and it's a story that helps us understand ourselves.” So says Akiva Goldsman, an Oscar, Golden Globe, and WGA-Award winning screenwriter whose credits include A Beautiful Mind, The Client, Batman Forever, A Time to Kill, Practical Magic, Cinderella Man, I Am Legend, The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, Insurgent, and I, Robot. He's on Pulling the Thread today, though, to talk about Apple TV+'s The Crowded Room, a psychological thriller starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried on which he was both the writer and the showrunner. So first, some warnings: Yes, there are spoilers, though in my opinion, nothing that will markedly change your experience of watching the show. In fact, knowing the back story made it easier for me to get through the first, very stressful episode. (It gets easier, and by episode three, I was riveted.) And also, a trigger warning: The Crowded Room and our conversation today explore childhood sexual abuse, which is also part of Akiva's personal history. I am excited to have back on the show legendary writer, director Alex Proyas. The last time he was here, we discussed his career, working within the studio system, dealing with insane interference in his creative vision, why he was shooting short films. At the time, his movie, The Heretic Foundation, and his misadventures in Hollyweird had just been released.I've been following all the cool stuff he's been working on social media, his shorts, etc. I'm thrilled for him. It's nice seeing an artist creating and not waiting for someone to permit them to make. For those of you who are not familiar with Alex Proyas's work, he is the filmmaker behind The Crow, Dark City, The Knowing, Gods of Egypt, iRobot, and Mask of the Evil Apparition.iRobot was directed by Proyas, written by Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Vintar. The 2004 Box Office $346 million grossed film received mixed reviews. It starred Will Smith and was a technophobic cop in 2035 who went on to investigate a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity.Today, we are talking more about his new streaming platform VIDIVERSE. I really wanted to promote what you're doing because I know it's coming from a great place. I need to promote what you're doing because I know it's coming from a great place.VIDIVERSE is a new streaming platform that offers a non-exclusive destination for streaming curated content of all kinds. In time, the platform will partner with creators to help produce content. Most independent filmmakers are getting away from Youtube, and that was the inspiration behind Proyas's VIDIVERSE. YouTube seems to have developed stricter policies about who derives any income from content. Even though a few people manage overtime to beat the algorithm, most creators get very few views. Independent creators to continue building through the platform. Vimeo, and others that similarly target filmmakers ease the streaming challenge. Still, there's nothing between those two ends of the spectrum because YouTube seems to soak it all up through advertising. So, someone like Proyas, who has moved effortlessly between helming TV commercials and music videos to feature films, understands the demand for more targeted platforms and fair revenue distribution models. This is what he intends to develop with VIDIVERSE.Alex also gave us an EXCLUSIVE UPDATE on the development of his Dark City streaming series. This was a fun conversation. Please enjoy our guest, Alex Proyas. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/2881148/advertisement

Writer Akiva Goldsman guides us through the long and winding road to the production of 2001's Best Picture Oscar winner A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Inspired to take on the challenge of adapting the book by growing up in a house that fostered kids with mental illness, Akiva's connection to the material was evident in his first pitch to Ron Howard's partner Brian Grazer. He knew the subject had to be handled with the appropiate respect and sensitivity, but was also incredibly creative in his vision for how to cinematically portray the intricacies of schizophrenia. Star Russell Crowe, who had to leave in the middle of filming to accept his Oscar for GLADIATOR, was particular and precise in a role that helped define his career.

The Last Man on Earth (1964)   The Last Man on Earth is a 1964 post-apocalyptic science fiction horror film based on the 1954 novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson. The film was produced by Robert L. Lippert and directed by Ubaldo Ragona and Sidney Salkow, and stars Vincent Price and Franca Bettoia. The screenplay was written in part by Matheson, but he was dissatisfied with the result and chose to be credited as "Logan Swanson". William Leicester, Furio M. Monetti, and Ubaldo Ragona finished the script.  The Last Man on Earth was filmed in Rome, with scenes being completed at Esposizione Universale Roma. It was released in the United States by American International Pictures. In the 1980s, the film entered the public domain. MGM Home Video, the current owners of the AIP film catalog, released a digitally remastered widescreen version of the film on DVD in September 2005.   I Am Legend (2007)   I Am Legend is a 2007 American post-apocalyptic action thriller film loosely based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. Directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich, the film stars Will Smith as US Army virologist Robert Neville. It is set in New York City after a virus, which was originally created to cure cancer, has wiped out most of mankind, leaving Neville as the last human in New York, other than nocturnal mutants. Neville is immune to the virus, and he works to develop a cure while defending himself against the hostile mutants. It is the third feature-film adaptation of Matheson's novel following 1964's The Last Man on Earth and 1971's The Omega Man.   Opening Credits; Introduction (.37); Background History (29.11); The Last Man On Earth (1964) Film Trailer (30.43); The Original (33.43); Let's Rate (55.39); Introducing the Double Feature (1:27.22); I Am Legend (2007) Film Trailer (1:30.10); The Attraction (1:32.44); How Many Stars (2:14.10); End Credits (2:322.03); Closing Credits (2:32.41)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – copyright 2021.
