The Golden State Killer is one of the most infamous serial killers in United States history. Also known as the Visalia Ransacker, the East Area Rapist, and the Original Night Stalker, the Golden State Killer was active from 1974 to 1986 across California, committing at least 13 murders, 50 rapes, and more than 100 burglaries. In 2013, true crime writer Michelle McNamara coined the Golden State Killer to encompass the many different monikers given to the same criminal. Do you ever go grocery shopping without any sort of list and end up forgetting half of what you actually needed? Not fun, right? So why would you take that same approach with how you operate your supply chain? On our season finale of Supply Chain Therapy, listen to how Rebeca Illsley, COO of Thermacell Repellents, successfully incorporates process into an ever-growing demand pipeline. Yet another veteran in the industry, Rebecca held a variety of roles at The Clorox Company, including Director of Manufacturing & Director of Supply Chain Integration, before making the leap to Thermacell. In the conversation with Alex and Michelle, Rebecca shares what big lessons she's brought to the Thermacell team, and what she's prioritized first since joining the organization. Some of the highlights include segmentation, team building, and focusing on S&OP first and foremost. Given that Thermacell products are EPA registered, Rebecca highlights the ways in which your manufacturing is impacted when producing safe, high-quality products. Later on, you'll also hear Rebecca talk about what it was like to partially step away from her career in order to build her family and raise her two daughters. Hint – It's totally possible! In addition, she gives her take on how her experience has been in this male-dominated industry, and what advice she has for others looking to tighten the gender gap. —Guest BioRebecca Illsley is the Chief Operating Officer of Thermacell Repellents Inc. She started her career in consumer packaged goods 24 years ago in Research and Development with Frito-Lay followed by Coca-Cola. Rebecca took a pause in her career for six years opting to stay at home with her two daughters. She returned to work full time at The Clorox Company where she held a variety of roles in supply chain over 14 years. Those roles included Manager of Contract Manufacturing, Director of Global Quality Assurance, Director of Supply Chain Integration and Director of Manufacturing. Rebecca is very proud to be leading a talented supply chain organization at Thermacell, driving growth by disrupting the mosquito repellent category with exciting product innovation.Rebecca grew up in Nova Scotia Canada and has a BSc in Food Science from Acadia University and a MS in Food Science from the University of Minnesota. —Guest Quote“My opinion is: S&OP is the brain of the supply chain. So if you don't have S&OP where it needs to be, then you really can't manage your demand. "I hate it, but I didn't like it, okay...I didn't hate it...but I didn't like it..." -Brooke Bates from Happily Booked (She makes no sense 100% of the time)“Godfather?” Sputtered Uncle Vernon. “You haven't got a godfather!” “Yes, I have,” said Harry brightly. “He was my mum and dad's best friend. He's a convicted murderer, but he's broken out of Wizard prison and he's on the run. He likes to keep in touch with me, though…keep up with my news…check if I'm happy…” And, grinning broadly at the look of horror on Uncle Vernon's face, Harry set off toward the station exit, Hedwig rattling along in front of him, for what looked like a much better summer than the last.Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban by J. With DTC sales in the US tripling over the past six years, shouldn't more brands deliver products right to customers' doors? What about if your products are bulky, made of metal, and often weigh more than 100 lbs?Today, hear how Blackstone Products, an outdoor griddle company, serves consumers through both B2B and DTC channels to maximize their reach in the marketplace. Joining Michelle and Alex from Blackstone is Supply Chain and Procurement Manager, Tom Newman. Having recently celebrated his one-year anniversary with the company, Tom has an extensive history of ensuring large items are delivered safely and reliably. In this episode, Tom highlights the importance of paying attention to the most minute details, how critical of a link overseas manufacturing partnerships are, and what steps Blackstone takes to meet the demands of both their product channels. If you're hungry, make sure you eat before putting on this episode, as the discussion also goes on to cover what sort of meals the team at Blackstone tests their griddles with. Stay tuned to the end of the episode to find out what Tom's favorite slope is out in Utah and what is on his mind regarding the future of Blackstone Products. —Guest BioTom Newman is the Supply Chain and Procurement Manager of Blackstone Products. He has been with the organization since March of 2022, and had loved the time he's spent with the team. The Blackstone Griddle came from the idea that while grilling is a global passion, at every BBQ there's always something that needs to be cooked inside, thus separating people from one another. So the outdoor griddle was born in 2008, with the company experience massive growth year after year since. Prior to Blackstone Products, Tom was the Director of Supply Chain Planning and Execution for iFit, a fitness company that pairs its workout equipment with a mobile application. Additionally, he's held roles at Campbell Scientific, Orbit, and General Motors. Needless to say, Tom has plenty of experience delivering large-scale items to customers. One huge advantage that Tom has had in his supply chain career? He decided to study Mandarin after his first experience in Taiwan back in college. Throughout his career, he's spent about 20 years in China, and credits this connection for allowing him to strengthen his relationships with overseas partners over the years. —Guest Quote“Supply chain is one of those agnostic fields where you bring whatever career background, whatever knowledge you have. You might imagine the logistics around subscription box fulfillment are rather simple, right? You have control over what goes in your customer's box, when it gets shipped, and how often you build them... Think again. This week, Alex and Michelle practice mindful breathing with John Roman, CEO of BattlBox and Carnivore Club. Throughout their conversation, John emphasizes the importance of fostering community and building transparency when facing inevitable cracks in your supply chain–regardless of who's at fault. A seven-part documentary series based on the book of the same name, I'll Be Gone in the Dark explores writer Michelle McNamara's investigation into the dark world of the violent predator she dubbed "The Golden State Killer," the man who terrorized California in the 1970s and 80s and is responsible for 50 home-invasion rapes and 13 murders. The series is also a journey into the soul of McNamara, whose True Crime Diaries blog and years of relentless determination for justice for the victims helped keep the case alive and in the public eye, and who tragically died of an accidental overdose while writing her book. A meditation on obsession and loss, I'll Be Gone in the Dark chronicles the unrelenting path of a mysterious killer and the fierce determination of one woman to bring the case to light. The crimes most commonly include murder; about 40 percent focus on tales of serial killers. As much as we love listening to a celebrity interview or cultural discussion, there's nothing quite like a true crime podcast to keep you hooked for hours on end. There's a reason why so many true crime series have climbed the podcast charts over the years – from the genre-defining brilliance of Serial to the unexpected twists and turns of Sweet Bobby, true crime is the genre that just keeps on giving.True crime has never been more popular than it is today, as evidenced by the astonishing number of podcasts, TV shows, and documentaries dedicated to the genre. At its core, however, true crime is a type of nonfiction literature. From influential works like Truman Capote's In Cold Blood (1966) to modern-day investigations such as Michelle McNamara's I'll Be Gone in the Dark (2018) or Elon Green's Last Call (2021), such narratives are unique in the way they connect with their readers, precisely because they explore harrowing real-life events that could happen to anyone.Want to know more about true crime? Here we define the genre, take a fascinating look at its origins, and cover some of its common themes. The Definition of “True Crime”It seems like the definition of true crime would be obvious: A story about a crime that actually occurred. Indeed, most true crime books explore dark and distressing subject matter, and reader discretion is advised. Granted, the first rule of true crime is that the narrative must include as many nitty-gritty facts about the case as possible: Readers expect the actual names of people involved and the correct time and place, information about what they did, and as many details of the crime and its investigation as the author can dig up.True crime books can be about a single event, like a kidnapping. They can also be about the collective crimes of serial killers, thieves, or cult leaders. However narrow or broad the focus, the best true crime books deliver well-researched, finely written examinations of the case at hand. But the wealth of details is just half of what makes true crime so popular with readers. The most talented true crime authors excel at presenting the facts of a case while vividly re-creating the atmosphere that surrounded the crime. They put criminals and their victims in context by establishing elements like the political climate of the day, the history of a town, or the struggles faced by a particular community. They dig into everyone's motives, then weigh these motives against the actions and developments they document. They re-create dialogue as faithfully as possible, although of course sometimes it's necessary to take artistic liberties. In other words, the most popular true crime authors transport readers to the scene of the crime, with all senses fully engaged. Without an author's narrative talents, the details of the crime would simply read like a legal report.Best True Crime Stories Podcast 2022 Police Interrogations, True Crime Investigations and MORE!

In Episode 123, Nikki Erlick joins me to discuss (spoiler-free!) her debut novel, The Measure, and share her book recommendations. A both otherworldly and of our time story, in a symbolic way rather than a literal way. The Measure will absolutely be one of my favorite books of 2022! This post contains affiliate links through which I make a small commission when you make a purchase (at no cost to you!). Highlights Nikki's inspiration for The Measure. How she incorporated Ancient Greek mythology about fate in her writing. The ways COVID-19 pandemic influenced and impacted her novel. How she decided to take her story to a place of healing, peace, and hope. Nikki's path to publication as a debut author. The comparable books and authors Nikki names for read-alikes. Nikki's process for weaving together the wide variety of societal implications into her story. Episode 15 takes us outside the comfort zone in looking at the darkness in life and in people. We're talking about True Crime with Jenn Vogel, Chief Revenue Officer, Voxpopme. Both fans of the true crime genre, Jenn and Jo discuss their seemingly irrational (but actually very rational) fascination with criminal acts, and the true circumstances surrounding them, and what that tells about human limitations and moral boundaries. As a people-first leader in the business of playing detective (that is, uncovering the human motivations behind our actions), Jenn speaks of our need to solve mysteries and the lessons we learn from those who survive them. Jenn also reflects on the fine line between detachment from sensationalized stories (often exaggerated, sometimes humorized, even at times completely made up), the need to allow ourselves to be horrified by them, and the importance of seeing human beings in our whole complexity ... even the taboo and less comfortable. -- To look outside, Jenn goes outside! When she is looking to clear her mind or generate creative ideas, nothing beats a walk outside with fresh air (and of course, the dog). She finds not multi-tasking and trying to be doing everything all at once allows her to get into truly fresh ways of thinking. -- Jenn Mancusi Vogel has been in marketing for the research industry for more than 12 years, gaining a great understanding of the ever-changing needs corporate researchers have to deliver insights in new ways, faster and with fewer resources. This is why she decided to join Voxpopme – at the center of the movement for greater customer empathy movement – in 2018. As Chief Growth Officer, she and her team are focused on educating the market about the power of a people-first strategy, and how to leverage video to have customer conversations at scale, throughout every stage of innovation. Sabbatical Summer is upon us! As you already know, Pastor Aaron has started his sabbatical last week. So, for the rest of the summer, I will be joining forces to co-host with Pastor Michelle McNamara from First Congregational United Church of Christ Downers Grove. This week, we are also joined by her colleague there, Pastor Scott Oberle, just days before the start of HIS sabbatical. We gather to talk about the sacramental moment that is the Christian funeral, about death, and about the hope of life and love everlasting. (Please forgive the audio at the very beginning of the recording...it clears up after a minute.)

Content Warning: This episode contains subject matter that is not suitable for children. In this episode, Sharon has a conversation with retired cold case investigator, Paul Holes, about the mental and emotional impact of working in a field of violent crime. Paul recounts some of his most memorable cases and why he chose to pursue a career in cold cases. We also get to hear about Paul's friendship with the late Michelle McNamara, author of I'll Be Gone in the Dark, and the investigation of the Golden State Killer. After 24 years, the killer, Joseph DeAngelo, was brought to justice thanks to Paul's work with a small team that began to link suspect DNA through genealogy. Prison escapes, death row visits, and how to handle (and not handle) homicide. No it's not an episode of one of those murder-as-snack podcasts, it's Sarah and Nancy discussing serial killers, lovelorn prison guards, manipulative prisoners, and why people who make it their business to cover murder might do it with a little more delicacy. Plus the surgery Sarah cannot talk about, a wee bit of we-told-you-so over Amber Heard being revealed to have not written the 2018 domestic violence op-ed for which ex-husband Johnny Depp is now demanding $50 million in defamation dough, and Sarah plans a trip to see it all firsthand.Por favor: In preparation for a bonus show, the Smoke ‘Em journalistsas invite you to send questions, mash notes, secret messages to smokeempodcast@gmail.com As promised, a baker's dozen of true crime books we love:Shot in the Heart, by Mikal GilmoreLost Girls, by Robert KolkerBlood Will Out, by Walter KirnThe Adversary, by Emmanuel CarrereColumbine, by Dave CullenDown City, by Leah CarrollI'll Be Gone in the Dark, by Michelle McNamara (which, full disclosure, I listened to on audio. Cold case investigator Paul Holes played a major role in ending a decades-long reign of terror by The Golden State Killer. First known as The East Area Rapist, a masked psychological sadist assaulted 50 women in Northern California between 1976 and 1979. He progressed from burglaries to vicious sexual assaults in the middle of the night to bludgeoning his victims to death. Along the way, he called 911 to taunt the police. Suddenly it seemed he had disappeared. But he had moved to a new hunting ground in Southern California, where he murdered 13 people and became known as the Original Night Stalker. And then in 1986, it stopped. In 2011, DNA testing revealed that the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker were one in the same man. True crime writer Michelle McNamara gave the elusive criminal the “Golden State Killer.” McNamara, the wife of comedian/actor Patton Oswalt, became obsessed with the long-abandoned cold case for six years, focusing attention on it until her untimely death. Enter investigator Paul Holes. Holes talked with Robert about his newly released book, Unmasked: My Life Solving America's Cold Cases. They discuss the “Golden State Killer”, notorious cases in Texas, and breakthroughs in forensic genealogy. After a couple of weeks palate cleanser (while Kristina did more reading and research) we are once again back into the True Crime arc and today we are discussing true crime amateur sleuths. We are going to speak to the evolution of sleuthing, how sleuthing can help, how it can harm and overarching it all is what some online scholars have identified as a late modern backlash against experts. We're going to be asking the question: do they sleuth because they do not trust the prevailing authority and how does solipsism fit into everything?
