In this episode, we have journalist Garrett Graff joining us to talk about his latest book, "UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government's Search for Alien Life Here—and Out There." Garrett's interest in this subject was piqued when former CIA director John Brennan publicly acknowledged his belief in the reality of UFOs. With a blend of open-mindedness and healthy skepticism, Garrett delves into this intriguing topic, exploring the government's quest for answers about alien life both on Earth and beyond.BIO: Garrett M. Graff, a distinguished journalist and internationally bestselling historian, has spent nearly two decades covering politics, technology, and national security—helping to explain where we've been and where we're headed. The former editor of Washingtonian and POLITICO Magazine and a contributing editor to WIRED Magazine, Graff is the author of multiple books, including the #1 national bestseller The Only Plane in the Sky: An Oral History of 9/11, as well as The Threat Matrix: Inside Robert Mueller's FBI, and Raven Rock, about the government's Cold War Doomsday plans. His book Watergate: A New History was a finalist in 2023 for the Pulitzer Prize in History, and his most recent book is UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government's Search for Alien Life Here—and Out There.

Are you convinced the U.S. government knows more than it will reveal about UFOs? After doing a deep dive into the history, journalist Garrett Graff is too. But he doesn't think the cover-up is a necessarily hiding alien life. “There are two obvious cloaks of secrecy that surrounds the government cover-up of its understanding of what UFOs and UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena) are today,” Graff tells MPR News host Kerri Miller on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. “One level is we don't know what level of public UFO sightings are our own government's secret development projects.” “The other is that … some chunk of UAPS are advanced adversary technology being tested against us — drones from other countries. So the military doesn't want to say what it's detected lest it give away too much.” But is there alien life? Graff feels certain there is. He just doesn't see proof that it's visiting earth. His new book looks at the history of UFO sightings in the United States, including the large reports of flying saucers after WWII, UFO conspiracy theories after Watergate and the U.S. government's efforts in recent years to engage in more open dialogue about extraterrestrial life.Guest: Garrett Graff is a journalist and the author of many books. While the What Next team spends some time with their families this week, we revisit some of 2023's biggest, strangest, and best stories. Regularly scheduled programming resumes Jan. 2. In a recent public hearing, three government officials told Congress that not only are “unidentified anomalous phenomena” real, they're a major national security concern. But one witness took his testimony even further, claiming the government possesses materials of “non-human origin.” How much do we really know about UAPs – or, as they're more commonly known, UFOs? And now that Congress is involved, are we about to learn a whole lot more? Guest: Garrett Graff, contributor at WIRED magazine; author of the forthcoming book, “UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government's Search for Alien Life Here—and Out There” Originally aired July 7. Having skewered right-wing populism and its demagogues in his two previous best-selling books, politics professor, writer, and podcaster Yasha Mounk turns now to the threat posed to liberalism from those progressives who champion "woke" identity politics. We discuss his latest, "The Identity Trap: A Story of Ideas and Power In Our Time."This episode— the first of two with Yasha Mounk — looks at the complex roots of a highly influential ideology based on personal identity— specifically race, gender and sexual orientation. These are said to determine a person's power, role in society, and how they see themselves. Mounk explains how the identity synthesis, which has become widely accepted in many universities, nonprofits and large corporations, had its origins in several intellectual traditions, including post-colonialism, postmodernism and critical race theory. Our interview mentions ideas and concepts raised by Michel Foucault, Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Krenshaw, Edward Said, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, and others. We learn how these thinkers sharply criticized modern liberalism and the civil rights movement of the Sixties and beyond.Yascha Mounk is a German-born American who teaches international affairs at Johns Hopkins University. His writing appears in The Atlantic and other publications. He is also founder and editor-in-chief of the Substack publication "Persuasion", and hosts the podcast, "The Good Fight".Mounk's new book has won widespread critical praise. The Washington Post said that "Mounk has told the story of the Great Awokening better than any other writer who has attempted to make sense of it."Recommendation: Jim is reading "UFO: The Inside Story of the US Government's Search for Alien Life Here— and Out There: by Garrett Graff.
