The search for life beyond Earth is no longer science fiction—it takes a lot of data, powerful telescopes and a bit of cosmic detective work. And at the center of this search is University of Chicago astrophysicist Jacob Bean. Bean was part of the team that made history by detecting carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of a distant planet using the James Webb Space Telescope—a major step forward in our ability to study exoplanets.Bean uses cutting-edge tools and discoveries that are reshaping how we think about planet habitability, biosignatures and our place in the universe. From potentially habitable exoplanets like K2-18b to false hopes like Gliese 486b, Bean shares why the atmospheres of these faraway worlds might hold the key to one of humanity's oldest questions: Are we alone in the universe?
Today we're ditching the drama on Earth and talking about K2-18b, an exoplanet 120 light-years away. K2-18b recently made headlines after researchers claimed to observe possible “signs of life” in the planet's atmosphere. So, did we find aliens? Michaela Musilova, an astrobiologist and analog astronaut, said it's too early to tell. On the show today, Musilova breaks down the debate over K2-18b, why better telescopes are needed to find definitive proof of life on another planet, and why President Trump's proposed funding cuts to NASA could disrupt this search. Plus, what's it like to be an analog astronaut, and what do they actually do?Then, why a healthy reading diet contains both “broccoli” and “chocolate pie” books. And, Jessamine Chan, author of “The School for Good Mothers,” answers the Make Me Smart question. Here's everything we talked about today:"Astronomers Detect a Possible Signature of Life on a Distant Planet" from The New York Times"Does exoplanet K2-18b host alien life or not? Recently, a group of scientists claimed they found possible signs of life on a planet called K2-18b. The news made headlines. Researchers said they'd detected sulphur-based gases that, on Earth, are strongly associated with life. But the research caused an uproar in astronomy circles because other scientists don't think the data is strong enough to celebrate an alien find just yet. In fact, they have some real issues with how this whole thing went down, and a new analysis casts further doubt on the findings. NPR science correspondent Nell Greenfieldboyce is here to wade into the controversy — and tell us what all this means for the future of searching for life beyond our solar system. Robin, and Alex discuss the recent story about scientists finding evidence of alien life on an exoplanet K2-18b. Could this actually be confirmed in the very near future, and what would that mean for society overall? We also discuss the other most likely places that life could be discovered within our lifetimes.
Madeleine Finlay and Ian Sample discuss three intriguing science stories from the week. From a hint at alien life on a distant planet, to a clue in the search for answers over why colon cancer rates are rising in the under 50's, and news from a group of scientists who claim to have experienced a colour no one has ever seen before.. This week, the potential discovery of signs of biosignatures in the atmosphere of a distant planet has aliens on the minds of many scholars. Meanwhile, a recently published study, “Exploring expert figures in alien-related UFO conspiracy theories” investigates how “expert figures”—including scientists, self-proclaimed researchers, and UFO witnesses—are used to legitimize alien-related conspiracy theories online. But what do these findings really indicate about conspiracy theories about UFOs, as well as academic views toward the UAP subject? This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we look at how key findings in the new study point to concerning trends that have recently emerged in the UAP research community, as well as potential biases in academic ideas toward the subject. We also look at the myth of the "UFO expert," NASA's lack of progress in UAP, and much more. Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Last week, a team of astrophysicists from the University of Cambridge announced that they had discovered the “strongest indication” ever of extraterrestrial life. The source did not come from Mars or Venus or any nearby moon. It came from K2-18b, a massive planet some 120 light-years from Earth. If this finding checks out, it is, without question, one of the most important discoveries in the history of science. But many scientists think that ... well, it might not check out at all. Today's guest is Sara Seager, a celebrated astrophysicist at MIT. Seager is a pioneer in the study of exoplanets and their atmospheres. She has done as much as practically anybody to develop the science of interpreting light from faraway stars to make inferences about planets. In today's show, Seager and I slowly worked our way up to last week's announcement by building a foundation of the basic science at play. What are exoplanets? How do we know that they're there? How do we have any idea about the chemicals present on that planet if we can't send probes to test their air? What does the K2-18b finding really tell us? And what larger philosophical questions about life and aliens are raised by this new science of exoplanet atmospheres? If you have questions, observations, or ideas for future episodes, email us at PlainEnglish@Spotify.com. Hints of Alien Life, a Galactic Mystery, and Juno's Safe Mode IncidentIn this episode of SpaceTime, we explore groundbreaking revelations suggesting the potential for alien life beyond Earth. Using NASA's Webb Space Telescope, astronomers have detected chemical signatures of dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide in the atmosphere of the exoplanet K2 18 b, a sub-Neptune world located 124 light years away in the habitable zone of its host star. While these findings are incredibly promising, researchers urge caution as they work to confirm these biosignatures through further observations.A Surprising Spiral Galaxy from the Early UniverseNext, we dive into the discovery of a surprisingly large spiral galaxy dating back 11.4 billion years, which challenges current models of galaxy formation. This massive galaxy, dubbed the "Big Wheel," is three times larger than expected for its time, prompting astronomers to rethink how galaxies can grow and evolve in the early universe. The implications of this finding could reshape our understanding of cosmic structure and formation processes.NASA's Juno Spacecraft in Safe ModeAdditionally, we discuss a recent anomaly that forced NASA's Juno spacecraft to enter safe mode during a close flyby of Jupiter. The spacecraft's precautionary measures allowed it to protect its systems and continue diagnostics, ensuring the mission's ongoing success as it gathers vital data about the gas giant and its moons.00:00 Space Time Series 28 Episode 48 for broadcast on 21 April 202500:49 Potential biosignatures detected on K2 18 b06:30 Implications for the search for extraterrestrial life12:15 Discovery of an ancient spiral galaxy in the early universe18:00 Challenges to current galaxy formation models22:45 Juno spacecraft enters safe mode after anomaly27:00 Summary of recent astronomical discoveries30:15 Science report: Health benefits of sauerkraut and lunar dust solar panelswww.spacetimewithstuartgary.comwww.bitesz.com

Join Ben Rogers, Jeff 'Skin' Wade, Kevin 'KT' Turner, and Krystina Ray on The Ben and Skin Show as they have a fascinating discussion on the strongest evidence yet of possible life beyond our solar system, with scientists detecting gases on a distant planet that suggest microbial life. 'Keep us posted, science!' becomes the catchphrase of the day.
Episode 298 Big news has just broken - astronomers claim they've detected the strongest evidence for alien life yet. The news has got the world's media fired up with excitement - but is this really a “revolutionary moment”? Astronomers studying the atmosphere of a distant planet called K2-18b say they have detected a molecule called DMS that is only produced on Earth by living organisms, so it's thought life might be producing it there too. Hear from the lead researcher on this project, Nikku Madhusudhan of the University of Cambridge, who says “these are the first hints of an alien world that is possibly inhabited”. But even if this biosignature detection is confirmed, would it be the slam dunk everyone thinks it is? In this episode, Alex Wilkins and Rowan Hooper offer a bit of balance to the discussion and explore how far this is from definitive evidence of alien life. We also hear the views of Laura Kreidberg, managing director of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy. It is one of the greatest questions humankind has ever faced: are we alone in the cosmos? If alien life on other worlds exists, are there intelligent forms that may be capable of communication? Or is it even possible that some form of non-human intelligence might already be present closer to Earth than we realize? This week on The Micah Hanks Program, in our ongoing discussions about the possibility of exotic life forms and the possibility of non-human intelligence, we discuss a potential strategy for research that examines where life might be found, in what forms it may appear, and whether it could be lurking nearby unrecognized by modern science. Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? Please consider reporting your sighting to the UAP Sightings Reporting System, a public resource for information about sightings of aerial phenomena. Are we entering a "Dark Age of Science?" Recent controversies involving phenomena in our universe that include the ongoing debate over dark matter and dark energy, as well as the existence of what some astronomers call "dark comets", have led to controversy about our perspectives on the cosmos... but to what end? Further, are recent cultural and societal events in the world spelling doom for science, including efforts to determine whether we're alone in the universe? Joining us this week on The Micah Hanks Program is Avi Loeb, the Frank B. Baird Jr. Professor of Science at Harvard University, where since 2007 he has been Director of the Institute for Theory and Computation at the Center for Astrophysics. He is founder of The Galileo Project, and author of books that include Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth and Interstellar: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life and Our Future in the Stars. Avi joins us to discuss his latest work, the search for ET, scientific dogma, and much more. Have you had a UFO/UAP sighting? This episode is a rollercoaster of nostalgia, deep thoughts, and lighthearted debates. We dive into gaming friendships, the wild evolution of technology, and how social media might be frying our attention spans. There's a nostalgic detour into childhood cartoons, the Bozo Show, and even some good ol' alien conspiracies. Then, we shift gears to real-world chaos—California's environmental struggles, rising insurance rates, and the ridiculous housing market. Sprinkle in some Disneyland stories, Super Bowl hype, and a crash course on Bitcoin, and you've got a mix of humor, insight, and just enough conspiracy theories to keep things interesting.Chapters00:00 Navigating the Digital Landscape00:03 Generational Technology Shift05:35 Social Media and Attention Span10:40 Communication Preferences in the Digital Age15:48 The Nostalgia of Ringtones17:23 The Evolution of Interests in Boys18:53 Influential Cartoons and Childhood Memories22:06 The Bozo Show and Its Cultural Impact24:07 Exploring Human Evolution and Ancient Civilizations26:56 Theories on Alien Life and Ancient Technology30:32 The Mystery of Pyramids and Lost Knowledge33:28 The Rapid Advancement of Human Technology36:11 Seattle's Unique History and Cultural Identity37:35 Exploring Musical Influences38:03 Discovering Nirvana and Its Impact38:55 Cultural Differences in Music Appreciation39:50 Hydration Habits of Today's Youth40:37 Water Quality and Regional Differences41:37 California's Environmental Challenges42:20 Insurance Implications of Natural Disasters44:16 Rising Insurance Premiums and Market Trends46:05 Living Without Insurance: Risks and Realities47:53 Housing Market Trends and Affordability49:27 Super Bowl Predictions and Team Loyalties54:25 The Resourcefulness of Kids55:11 Late Night DoorDash Adventures56:36 The Cost of Convenience58:39 Cost of Living and Relocation Concerns01:04:38 Disneyland Experience01:06:30 Technical Difficulties and Podcasting Challenges01:07:07 Bitcoin and Digital Currency Discussions

It's time for Bizarre News for January 2025! We have four exciting and strange news stories for you this month.Story 1 - Bigfoot Sighting (Mansfield, Ohio): A man named Andrew Baum and his stepfather reported seeing a Sasquatch while setting up a tree stand on their farmland near Interstate 71 in December 2024. The BFRO (Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization) investigated and found the witness credible, though they questioned whether it might have been a human walking across the field rather than a Sasquatch.Story 2 - Alien Life Search Advancement: Scientists are increasingly optimistic about discovering extraterrestrial life due to technological advancements like the James Webb Space Telescope and the $100 million Breakthrough Listen project. Previous search efforts have been minimal (equivalent to scooping an 8-ounce glass from Earth's oceans), but new technology is expected to dramatically increase our ability to detect potential signs of life in space.Story 3 - Haunted Hotel for Sale (Ballinger, Texas): The Old Park Hotel, an 1886 two-story building known for paranormal activity including full-body apparitions and cold spots, is being put up for sale by its current owners Connie and Dan Lefebvre. The hotel, which has been featured on the Travel Channel, has attracted paranormal investigators from around the world, and the owners are seeking buyers who will continue operating it as a paranormal venue.Story 4 - Haunted Strathpeffer Pavilion (Scotland): A Victorian-era building in the Scottish Highlands has gained a reputation for being haunted, with reports of shadowy figures and unexplained phenomena. Recent paranormal investigators using specialized equipment like EMF detectors and spirit boxes claimed to have received clear responses through their devices, including being told to leave the balcony area.Want two more bonus news stories? Around the turn of the century, 3.8 million people banded together in a real-time search for aliens — with screensavers. It was a big moment in a century-long concerted search for extraterrestrial intelligence. So far, alien life hasn't been found. But for people like astronomer James Davenport, that doesn't mean the hunt is worthless — or should be given up. No, according to James, the search is only getting more exciting as new technology opens up a whole new landscape of possibilities. So today on the show: The evolving hunt for alien life.Want more space content? Let your opinion be heard by dropping us a line at shortwave@npr.org!
