Artist Craig Thompson joins the show at long last to celebrate his new book, GINSENG ROOTS: A Memoir (Pantheon). We talk about how he spent ten summers of his childhood helping farm ginseng, how that herb connects rural Wisconsin with China and South Korea, how he balanced history, journalism, economics, and memoir in the pages of his book, and why he chose to make Ginseng Roots as a serial comic rather than a standalone book and how that affected his creative process. We get into how the book serves as a sort of midlife revision of his breakthrough book, Blankets, how the last chapter of the book had to happen in near-real-time, how a degenerative condition in his hands became a unifying theme to the book while almost derailing it, how he found the design language of the book and obsessed over a two-color process (to amazing results), and whether this is his swansong for comics (spoiler: it's not!). We also discuss what home means to him, 8 months into being on the road, what it was like discovering that he had a global audience, his ongoing relationship with his evangelical Christian upbringing, his editor's concerns that Ginseng Roots could open him up to accusations of cultural insensitivity (and how he got over it), all while geeking out over our fave cartoonists from the '90s indy period (go, Dylan Horrocks!), and more. Today, we welcome acclaimed graphic novelist Craig Thompson to discuss his latest tome, Ginseng Roots. In this deeply personal book, Thompson returns to his rural Wisconsin roots to explore the fascinating world of ginseng cultivation that shaped his childhood. The conversation spans Craig's artistic evolution since his breakthrough memoir Blankets, his research trips to China that informed the book's historical elements, and how his early farming experiences continue to influence his creative process. You can keep up with Craig's latest work and appearances through his official website craigthompsonbooks.com or by following him on Instagram @craigthompsonbooks. Support the show
In his award-winning 2003 graphic novel Blankets, Craig Thompson depicted his teenage love and fall from faith in rural Wisconsin. Now he returns to the story of his life with Ginseng Roots, which focuses on a minor detail that Blankets omitted: namely, 10 summers he spent as a boy weeding and harvesting American ginseng for a dollar an hour. Thompson maps the roots of the 300-year-old global ginseng trade from China and Korea to Marathon, Wisconsin, and profiles the other people tangled in the industry's whiskers: Hmong harvesters who migrated from Laos, American workers and industrial farmers caught up in the vicissitudes of global agriculture, and wild ginseng hunters the world over.Go beyond the episode:Craig Thompson's Ginseng Roots: A MemoirRead Matthew Denton-Edmunson's essay about wild ginseng hunters, “The Root Problem”Also mentioned: Scout McCloud's Understanding Comics: The Invisiible Art, Ted J. I denne episoden tar vi en liten prat med noen av årets vinnere av Kultur og likestillingsdepartementets priser for barne- og ungdomslitteratur, for bøker utgitt i 2024. Join the hosts as they take you through all the news from around the world and across the UK. In this week's show, we have an update on the pilot that crashed the Hawker Hunter at the Shoreham airshow back in 2015, Southwest Airlines says goodbye To Its 'Bags Fly Free' policy and an Air India flight returns to Chicago after a passenger clogs a toilet with clothes and a blanket. Still, saves on loo roll I suppose, albeit a somewhat industrial way of going about things! This week: are we drowning in a sea of twee? Gareth Roberts writes the cover article this week, arguing against what he sees as the hideous triviality of our times. ‘The British have lost their aversion to glutinous sentimentality,' he declares. How did we get here, and who are the worst offenders? Gareth argues that the triumph of twee has left us unable to face serious things with seriousness. Could there be sinister consequences if we don't take this more seriously? Gareth joined the podcast to make his case, alongside Josh Cohen, psychoanalyst and author of All The Rage (00:49). Then: was Graham Brady the ‘kingmaker' or the ‘kingslayer' of the past Tory era? The shadow cabinet member and Conservative M.P. Alex Burghart has reviewed Graham Brady's new book Kingmaker: Secrets, Lies and the Truth about Five Prime Ministers in the books section of the magazine this week. Looking back on his time as chair of the influential 1922 Committee, Graham provides his reflections on what has been an historic, and often turbulent, period in British politics. Having now taken a seat in the Lords, Graham joins the podcast with The Spectator's political editor, Katy Balls, to reveal what he really thought about that time in office and what his advice to his successor would be (16:07). And finally: are pigs in blankets the best Christmas food? It would seem so, according to The Spectator's data editor Michael Simmons, who provides his notes on the festive treat in the magazine this week. His only gripe, as a proud Scot, is that they should really be called ‘kilted sausages'. He reveals that Brits are expected to eat a whopping 668 million of them over the Christmas season. Why are they so good, and how can you elevate your Christmas meal over the coming season? Michael joins the podcast alongside Martyn Lee, head of product at Yeo Valley and the former executive chef of Waitrose and Tesco. Plus, a guest appearance of pigs in blankets from The Spectator's local pub, The Two Chairmen – will they pass Michael's taste test? (26:58). Hosted by William Moore and Lara Prendergast. Produced by Patrick Gibbons, Oscar Edmondson, and Cindy Yu.
