Today we conclude our series: The Evolution of Diabolical Witchcraft Belief with Professor Raiswell of the University of Prince Edward Island, an expert in medieval devil lore, with another double episode release. If you're just joining us, we recommend checking out the previous series episodes first, though this episode can certainly stand on its own.In this episode, part 3 of the series, Dr. Raiswell takes us into the minds and lives of Heinrich Kramer, aka Institoris, and Jacob Sprenger, the authors of the 15th century witch-hunting book, the Hammer of Witches, formally known as the Malleus Maleficarum. This Dr. Raiswell series is essential for understanding how theological concepts about Satan evolved into specific witchcraft accusations and largely gendered persecution mechanisms that still influence witch hunting today. The full series, in four parts, is available now wherever you get your podcasts. NEW PODCAST: The Thing About SalemCheck out our new podcast, The Thing About Salem, on YouTube! Help Us Build Our New Patreon Community for The Thing About Salem PodcastRichard RaiswellShop our Nonprofit Bookshop for: The Routledge History of the Devil in the Western Tradition Purchase the Malleus Maleficarum: The Hammer of Witches, translated by Christopher S. In Part 2, we delved deeper into how this connection became the driving force behind the witch hunts that devastated communities across Europe. In parts 3 and 4 we reveal shocking and informing details on the Malleus Maleficarum and its authors Heinrich Kramer, aka Institoris, and Jacob Sprenger.

Inevitably, we ended up going down various routes in a wide-ranging conversation including Target Books (again), Moorcock and other inspirations, roleplaying games and, eventually, The Warhound and the World's Pain, which is getting a fresh coat of paint thanks to Joe Monti and Saga Press and their brand-new hardcover Von Bek collection (releasing in December). We will follow up on this in the next few weeks with a deeper delve. We also discuss Dave's latest play, inspired by the events that led an under-sexed weirdo to produce the infamous Malleus Maleficarum, The Hammer and Helena. Down, down, the Witches' Road... I'm currently off on maternity leave, but to get you in the mood for the spooky season I'm re-releasing what must be my most popular Halloween special to date. Between 1450 and 1750, some 100,000 Europeans were tried for witchcraft, and some of the most intense periods of witchy panic took place in Scotland and England. Most, but not all, of these so-called witches were women. During this special Halloween episode, we'll be tracing the history of witchcraft, and talking about why King James VI was so fanatical about killing witches. We'll learn about the Malleus Maleficarum (or the veritable Guide to Witch Hunting), and discover how to “spot” a witch. We'll learn what types of women were in danger of being accused, why people thought women were especially susceptible to the Devil's wily charms, and how the Church played a massive role in witch hunting. We'll also discuss what happened when a supposed witch was caught – what torture techniques were used to extract confessions, what witch trials looked like, and what punishments awaited a guilty verdict. And we'll try to answer the most important question of all… why were so many accused witches women, and why were these women viewed as such a threat to society that they had to be hunted down and killed? Missing The Exploress? Patrons of the show get all episodes early and ad-free, voting rights on content, behind the scenes stuff, AND exclusive bonus episodes every month. I'll be posting new ones all through my maternity leave, so now's the time to hop on board! You can even try out being a patron with a 7-day free trial, so why not? 18, p. 1752 - Jean-Luc Eichenlaub The Malleus Maleficarum and the construction of witchcraft: Theology and popular belief - Hans Peter Broedel Sources : Historiographie générale https://journals.openedition.org/medievales/732?lang=en Eléments du procès https://library.oapen.org/handle/20.500.12657/35002 Sur Kramer https://www.britannica.com/biography/Heinrich-Kraemer

Witchfinder General, Salem, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch-hunts and witch trials sounds archaic and fanciful, these terms relics of an unenlightened, brutal age. However, we often hear ‘witch-hunt' in today's media, and the misogyny that shaped witch trials is all too familiar. Three women were prosecuted under a version of the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 2018. In Witchcraft: A History in Thirteen Trials (Simon & Schuster, 2023), Professor Marion Gibson uses thirteen significant trials to tell the global history of witchcraft and witch-hunts. As well as exploring the origins of witch-hunts through some of the most famous trials from the Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was reimagined by lawyers and radical historians in France, how suspicions of sorcery led to murder in Jazz Age Pennsylvania, the effects of colonialism and Christian missionary zeal on ‘witches' in Africa, and how even today a witch trial can come in many guises. Professor Gibson also tells the stories of the ‘witches' – mostly women like Helena Scheuberin, Anny Sampson and Joan Wright, whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James I and ‘Witchfinder General' Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them. Once a tool invented by demonologists to hurt and silence their enemies, witch trials have been twisted and transformed over the course of history and the lines between witch and witch-hunter blurred. For the fortunate, a witch-hunt is just a metaphor, but, as this book makes clear, witches are truly still on trial. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose doctoral work focused on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Häxan (1922): Movie Review from the Ray Taylor ShowShow topic: Join Ray Taylor as he delves into the enigmatic world of "Häxan", a 1922 silent horror essay film masterfully crafted by Benjamin Christensen. This cinematic treasure seamlessly blends documentary-style exposition with dramatized narrative sequences, offering a captivating exploration of the historical beliefs, superstitions, and often brutal responses surrounding witchcraft. From the medieval era's foreboding shadow to the misconceptions of the 20th century, "Häxan" draws on Christensen's extensive research, particularly from the Malleus Maleficarum, to unravel the disturbing possibility that many witch hunts might have arisen from profound misunderstandings of mental or neurological conditions. As Ray Taylor unpacks this thought-provoking narrative, listeners will be invited to reflect on the implications of mass hysteria and the often catastrophic consequences of ignorance and fear.JOIN Inspired Disorder +PLUS Today! Throughout history witchcraft has always been perceived as an evil practice. It is an artform only practiced and/or performed by those who dwell in sin. As society "progressed" there came about precautions that one could look to in order to protect them from the witches' dark arts. So it was handy for both the government and church to have a sort of guide/manual that one could use to convict women of being witches. It was then where the Malleus Maleficarum was created and introduced. This book offered ways in how to identify, interrogate and convict the witches of their time. Today we do a deep dive on the history of witchcraft. What is witchcraft? How does it differ from organized religion? Why did burning witches ever become a thing, and do witch hunts still occur in the modern world? Why do so many of us have such a strong and irrational fear of people we just don't understand? Going back to some of the earliest written words of Western Civilization, we learn today that a belief in magic and a fear of those who practice it in ways different than we do has fascinated and frightened humans since the very beginning of civilization.  Fear of "the other" led not only to a fear of "witchcraft," but to massive witch hunts, torture, and thousands of people being burned alive. What "others" do we witch hunt today? All of this and more on what immediately became one of my favorite episodes.  Wet Hot Bad Magic Summer Camp tickets are ON SALE! BadMagicMerch.com Get tour tickets at dancummins.tv  Merch: https://www.badmagicmerch.com Watch this episode: https://youtu.be/Pv2A6MrsOBIDiscord! https://discord.gg/tqzH89v Want to join the Cult of the Curious private Facebook Group?
