#20: How to Process Grief Through Yoga and Meditation

Yoga Inspiration

Grief is such a profound subject that impacts so many of us. Yet it is still one of the hardest emotions to talk about, even with our closest friends. This episode of The Yoga Inspiration is very important because Cynthia, a new yoga student, is opening up to me about her own journey through grief, pain, and healing by practicing yoga.  Who do you turn to when you’re grieving? Being vulnerable and opening up to someone is one of the only ways to truly allow yourself to heal. Vulnerability breeds generosity, love, and acceptance, and yoga allows you to open yourself up to these emotions without fear. Part of what yoga teaches us is that, through our pain and vulnerability, we are able to find that human connection. When Cynthia’s father was diagnosed with cancer, she looked for an opportunity to get healthier herself. She didn’t want her daughter to go through what she went through, and she decided that yoga class was a great way to get fit and strengthen her immune system. But what Cynthia wasn’t expecting was how yoga would strengthen her soul.  The story Cynthia shares on this podcast is one she hasn’t really told anyone else yet. It takes a long time to process grief and finding the words to talk about these emotions doesn’t come easily. Yoga gives Cynthia a different way to heal. Yoga practice is less of a physical practice for her and more an exercise of her soul and of her mind.  Your own yoga journey might inspire some emotions you aren’t expecting. For Cynthia, her journey helped her find peace. Everyone manages their grief differently, and finding peace with it is a long and hard process for many of us. People say grieving gets better with time, but you’ll hear on this episode that we don’t necessarily believe that. We may get stronger, and we get better at withstanding the waves of grief, but it never really leaves us.  In order to process her grief, Cynthia learned not to judge herself for the sometimes ugly emotions she would feel. Once upon a time, a yoga teacher told Cynthia, “Don’t judge the pose.” In that same vein, Cynthia knows that she can’t judge her own grief. Yoga teaches us that we must accept it and be at peace with it.  There is a kindness and a softness that comes through when you practice yoga. When you step on your yoga mat today, remind yourself that life is precious. It’s sweet, and it’s beautiful, but it is temporary. These moments we have are valuable, and they too shall pass. Cynthia’s vulnerability on this episode is proof of that, and I hope that it inspires you to see the beauty in your life’s tiniest moments.  If you’re a practicing yoga student, please share a bit of your yoga journey with me! Then, Cynthia worked with cardiology. When Cynthia became a parent, she found her child had eczema. This led Cynthia to learn more about nutrition. Cynthia recommends The Unhealthy Truth: One Mother's Shocking Investigation into the Dangers of America's Food Supply-- and What Every Family Can Do to Protect Itself. Cynthia started to think if she was happy with writing prescriptions. Truthfully, she wasn’t happy. When Cynthia started to study nutrition, she finally felt like she found her calling. Four years ago, Cynthia woke up and realized she was done with traditional medicine and gave her notice the same day. Cynthia wants to make a larger impact on her own terms. Frankly, she was tired of people telling her what to do. Now, she is doing exactly what she is supposed to do. [06:40] Why Cynthia Recommends Intermittent Fasting People have been conditioned to believe that they need to eat in the morning. However, our bodies are not designed to be eating all day long. When we are going against convention, we need the confidence to say BS. The cereal companies will benefit when they convince us that we need to eat breakfast garbage. Our bodies are designed to fast, feast, and fast again. Snacking is making us fat. [11:50] How To Stabilize Your Blood Sugar Each meal needs to have protein and healthy fats first. Carbs should be the non-processed variety. We have to stabilize our blood sugar first. Bacon, eggs, and avocado is a great example of fat-filled breakfast. If you are hungry within an hour of eating, your macros are off. Once you get your blood sugar stable, then you can move onto the concept of fasting. If you can’t sleep through the night, then you can’t lose weight. Also, if you are stressed, then you can’t lose weight. If a woman starts losing their period because of a fast, then the fast is too much for their body. [15:30] The Best Benefits of Fasting Mental clarity is Cynthia’s favorite benefit of fasting. She likes to know that she has loads of energy. The improved digestive process is Cynthia’s second favorite benefit. Lastly, the benefits of autophagy are fantastic. People are attracted to fasting because of weight loss; however, they find out that they feel so much better too. [17:20] Why We Need to Focus on Our Inner Work    Inner work is what keeps us sane. We need to be aware of limiting beliefs, our negative thoughts, and where our energy is going. “Our thoughts become our actions.” -Cynthia Thurlow Mindset is the most important thing that we possess. [21:20] How to Build a Mental Six-Pack You need high-quality sleep in a cold, darkroom. Physical activity in the morning is critical. Cynthia enjoys drinking tea – it is beneficial for boosting autophagy. What are you going to do for your brain? Cynthia is always listening to a book or listening to a podcast. Coldwater therapy will also assist with your mental six-pack. [25:20] How to Build Confidence Building confidence requires being in tune with your passions. Take time each day to be inspired by other people. Creating a plan will help with your confidence. Cynthia says the best investments she has made in her business are the big-ticket ones. Sometimes you just have to leap. [29:45] How to Achieve Youthful-Looking Skin How to achieve youthful-looking skin: Autophagy Sleep Hydration Eating healthy Less feeding More fasting Be around people that make you feel joyful and happy Find something that you enjoy doing AND MUCH MORE! Welcome back to Instant Impact with Elyse Archer! Today, Elyse has a conversation with Cynthia Barnes, founder of the National Association of Women Sale Professionals (NAWSP). Cynthia has built an enormous community in an incredibly short amount of time. She grew her brand from a single meetup chapter in Detroit to over 13,000 members in just two years. She cut her daily sales calls from 125 a day to only 12 a day and quadrupled her revenue. She shares how she did this and gives us insight into the mentality it takes to foster a brand.   Cynthia first shares her story—she’s been in sales since Girl Scout cookies were only $1.50 a box. She remembers her father giving her some valuable advice: she already has two strikes against her—she’s black and she’s a woman. That meant she would have to work twice as hard to get half as recognized. Her father told her there are three types of people in this world: those who make things happen, those who wait for things to happen, and those who wonder what happened. When Cynthia was given two sheets to fill selling cookies, she decided she then she would be someone who made things happen.   In 2016, Cynthia left her job to follow her passion for helping women reach the top. She explains that traditional sales training was made by men, for men. She wanted to change that. Cynthia talks to Elyse about some primary differences between men and women in sales. Women, she says, are inherently great at relationship building. Where they could use help, she continues, is building strength in their presence and confidence. Elyse mentions that there seemed to be an internalization of this negative language at a recent meet up she attended. At some point, these women were knocked down. Cynthia adds that part of what she does is helping women overcome imposter syndrome—they are there for a reason. Cynthia wanted to build a community that lifts women in a way that works for women. This meant following intuition and using the plethora of strengths women have to reach the top 1%.   Elyse and Cynthia discuss what it took to establish such a thriving community. Cynthia says sales training and coaching is secondary, what we need is someone who gets us—someone who understands. Many of NAWSP meetups are fireside chats where women can plug-in. She developed the NAWSP App so women can get the support they desire anytime, anywhere, and join a sisterhood of like-minded individuals. This happened, though, almost entirely through LinkedIn.   Cynthia is LinkedIn for Sales Blackbelt certified. This means she successfully completed a program on how to leverage LinkedIn for sales. This is when she was really able to boost her revenue and decrease the number of cold calls she was making. The first step, Cynthia shares, is having a business development profile. Most profiles on LinkedIn are job-seeking and occasionally a branding profile, but a business development profile allows you to attract a targeted market and close sales.   It’s important, Cynthia says, to include SEO keywords in your profile so you pop up on Google’s first page when the service you provide is searched for. After that, it's up to you to use the tools LinkedIn provides to target a market with granularity and specificity to connect with. Once a relationship is established, you can move the conversation off LinkedIn and move through the sales process.   Elyse mentions the different approaches to making relationships. There is a grinding mentality, where you play the number’s game, making hundreds of calls a day, and there is a relationship-driven mentality, which can sometimes be too passive. Cynthia mentions that time is precious—the goal is to be as effective and as efficient as possible. She suggests LinkedIn’s Sale Navigator, where you can search for specific roles, titles, etc. within companies. The program also sends you an email of targeted clients and tells you how many prospects you have. Cynthia says this is a massive help when it comes to narrowing down your focus.   Speaking of focus, Cynthia talks about how she brands herself. She wants to find what she can do that no one else in her field can. Finding a niche is essential, but more importantly, staying true and focused on that niche is vital. She explains that finding where your passion lies is key in keeping to your brand, you don’t want the water to get muddy.   What you’ll learn in this podcast   In today’s podcast, you’ll learn what it takes to build a brand effectively and efficiently. Cynthia offers key tips on how to stay true to your brand and stay the course. She tells us how to make LinkedIn work for you, and how she used it to fuel her passion for lifting women up to the highest possible degree. Cynthia is dedicated to helping women dance on the glass ceiling, and she shows us how she does it.   Contact   Connect with Cynthia on LinkedIn (but be sure to personalize the invitation!)   Check out NAWSP.org to join and for more information.   Request a free Brand Strategy Call: http://thebrandbuildersgroup.com/callelyse

Cynthia and her partner Nick have left the ‘rat race' and set up a regenerative farm and stay operation together in Seymour - about 100 k's north of Melbourne. When Cynthia got wind we were coming through her neck of the woods on our way to the New Economy Conference recently, she kindly asked us to drop in for a chat for her local Seymour FM radio show – The Food Exchange. We talk about the new economy, experiences of living more meaningful lives with less, and just how a former corporate executive (Keith Badger), and a former corporate-backed scholar (Anthony), came to ‘see the light' and join the movement for change to the systems in which we live.
