It's a very special Christmas episode! On this festivus morning, in the dark, on your mat, as you do your lonely yoga practice before your children awake, please feast your ears and bask in the wondrous splendiferousness energy that is Kino MacGregor! Enjoy this relaxed, informal, conversation between old friends chatting about old times, as if we were catching up at the local Coconut Stand in Gokulum after a challenging led class. We're talking about just how hard this practice is and how hard it is to be human, to do all the things, and still have time for your spiritual growth. The real charm of Kino though, besides her effortless ability to be vulnerable, as well as her deep and critical intelligence (which might be a somewhat delightful and unexpected surprise for the average IG doomscroller) is her down to earth, straight-up honesty. She brings to the conversation an ease in describing just how hard it is be her and what she has to do in the morning to feel normal, or even able to engage with other human beings. I think you'll find that even though she is somewhat supernatural her abilities (not to mention super famous within the yoga world), she's very much still human, and not afraid to lean into the fragility of her humanity. As we did, please be charmed with this very Special Christmas episode on a cheerful Sunday morning. We wish you the very best during this holiday season! After years of practicing, I realized getting my meditation practice perfect wasn't going to happen. But, this impossibility doesn't have to be a problem. Understand the imperfect nature of all things, even yourself, your life, and what you bring to meditation practice. A wandering mind is not a failed meditation. It's all a part of the practice. And, that's what it is: a practice. Imperfection and failure are a part of learning, a part of reality. No one is without imperfection.    We must also bring this understanding of imperfection into our lives. Our lives are imperfect, with arguments and other negative situations. None of these are failures of your spiritual practice. In fact, this awareness is a sign of spiritual growth.  Another important thing to understand is that judging other beings will only hurt your spiritual growth. The concept of good and bad varies, and it's important to remember that our perception only allows us to see a sliver of reality.  Blissful moments will happen, but this is when it is most important to practice non-attachment. Experience everything for what it is, and let it go. Remain present in the reality you are in and find peacefulness there.  Start the journey now with your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com. Buenos Dias, mis amigas! We hope you settling in to your Sunday morning. It is our honour to share with you all a conversation with our dear friend Emilia, who teaches Ashtanga Yoga in Miami. We met her many years ago on tour with Paramaguru R. Sharath Jois, and we are excited to talk with her again. We found out about her childhood in Bogatá and the impact of the Medellín Cartel on her family, and we talked about the American appetite for narcotics that sewed that destructive force in her life. This led quite naturally to a frank conversation about NA and AA and the role those positive communities had in getting her clean and sober and becoming now a “mamá caliente.“ Emilia is an Ashtanga Yoga teacher in Miami Beach. She started her journey in Yoga nearly 20 years ago and she embarked on a long research of different styles and teachers until she found Ashtanga yoga and decided to move to Miami to learn from her teachers Kino Macgregor, Tim Feldmann and Greg Nardi. Her passion is showing her students the beauty and transformative aspects of the practice of Ashtanga yoga. Her classes are filled with joy and enthusiasm and her goal is to pass onto them the devotion that has been passed to her by her teachers. Scott talks to Ashtanga yoga teacher and co-founder of the Miami Life Centre Tim Feldmann about the past, present and future of teaching Ashtanga yoga. In this nuanced and meaningful conversation, Tim and Scott discuss dancing as a spiritual practise, movement as a healing modality, and the teacher's role as a vessel for knowledge. ________ We'd like to invite you to join our growing monthly Stillpoint Yoga community. We teach in-person in London Bridge and live stream online Ashtanga Yoga assisted self practice and guided classes, with weekly yoga clinics and philosophy sessions guided by Scott Johnson and the Stillpoint teaching faculty. We also have a growing library of on-demand content. It's a beautiful way to navigate these times… Also, consider joining our Patreon community. We share these podcasts every 2 weeks and would love your feedback, input and support. You can even join a monthly live call to share your thoughts.  _________ Tim found his way to yoga after a catastrophic accident in Venezuela in 1992 interrupted his professional dancing career. He encountered Lino Miele in the late 1990's, who set Tim on the path to practising with Pattabhi Jois in Mysore. There he met his wife, Kino MacGregor, and in 2006 they founded the Miami Life Centre, where they continue to teach together to this day.  Tim shares openly about the fear he felt before practising with Jois, who even then had a reputation for fearsome physical adjustments. When Tim finally felt ready to practise with him (after completing Advanced A), he recalls feeling gratitude for the assists he received.  Since Karen Rain's revelations of sexual assault at the hands of Jois, Tim has had to come to terms with how his experience was at odds with that of the women Jois abused. He asks himself how he failed to notice, talking to Scott about how ‘crazy and amazing' those days in Mysore were, concluding that sometimes people ‘surrendered' at the expense of the safety of themselves and those around them.  Since opening the Miami Life Centre in 2006, Tim has moved his own teaching away from a hierarchical model and towards one that prioritises safety and inclusiveness. Having been confronted with the somewhat blasé attitude towards anatomy in the early days, he's relieved to see a more detailed and logical approach developing in recent years. He talks about the value and limitations of lineage and hierarchy - that structure can create clarity, but space to explore is essential. He talks about the ‘lineage holders' of Ashtanga yoga, and the nature of how knowledge is passed down. And finally, reflecting on the past couple of years, Tim concludes with how nothing is more important in life than being there for other people.  Tim is the co-founder and captain of the world-wide recognized Miami Life Center and of the newly opened Miami Yoga Garage - a new ambitious Shala and cultural house in Miami's fun Wynwood district. He has practiced yoga since 1994 and Ashtanga Since 1999. Authorized to teach by Pattabhi Jois and Sharath Jois he explores core concepts and modern boundaries of Patanjali's yoga teachings alike. A practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga's Advanced A Series Tim finds Ashtanga's traditional method an exceptional path towards healing, wisdom and self-realisation. Drawing upon his past as an internationally successful dancer and acclaimed choreographer, anatomy, alignment and technique is his second nature. Tim has been pursuing in-depth studies of Patanjali, Sankhya and Vedanta over the past 7 years with Vidwan Nagaraja Rao, Jayashree & Narasimha and other exceptional scholars in South India. Cherished worldwide for his fun, disciplined and detailed pursuit of authentic yoga and his compassionately effective touch, Tim travels to yoga shalas around the globe with the inclusive message of how study, steadiness and devotion is the means to powerful transformation both inside and outside of us. You can find out more about Tim's work here.   ‘This conversation with Tim Feldmann was so good. For quite a while I've wanted to talk to someone like Tim, who is one of the most recognisable of the current generation of Ashtanga teachers, about where the sharing of Ashtanga Yoga  finds itself. Tim was so open and honest about his own process,  where we are currently and what's possible in the future. I was left feeling like I had found a new friend to ge deep with. This conversation is essential if you care about sharing the practice of Ashtanga yoga to others…' Scott Johnson – November 2021

I've always been vocal about my goals of making Ashtanga yoga more accessible, but I go even deeper at this Q&A with Yoga Alliance. I answer questions from yogis from all over who want to find out more about the Ashtanga lineage and what classes are like on OmStars and at the Miami Life Center. The practice of Ashtanga is hard, gritty, and anything but easy. So my focus is on inspiring students to keep getting on the mat every day, even when they feel physically (and sometimes emotionally) drained.  I put the spiritual practice of Ashtanga front and center. The traditions and lineage are integral to your practice. By inspiring students to develop their spiritual practice, I hope to empower them to take on more responsibilities. Currently, there is a lot of talk about what yoga teachers can do to make yoga more accessible, but that responsibility is shared with the student, too. It becomes our collective responsibility, especially now after the sexual misconduct in the Ashtanga yoga community, to rethink the power dynamics between student and teacher. What does this new yoga practice look like? And how will the guru evolve to meet students at equal footing? Because a student holds as much power on the yoga mat as a teacher, we now have the opportunity to share what we know and strengthen one another on our yoga journeys. This is how I approach my practice and the way I teach yoga. I answer a few questions about my teaching career, but I don't really think of myself as a yoga teacher. I am always, first and foremost, a yoga student. I love learning about this practice, its traditions, our lineage, and then sharing what I've learned with others who are just as passionate about their journey.  My recommendation to you and everyone out there listening who is eager to try Ashtanga yoga is - Spend as much time as a yoga student as possible. Immerse yourself in the experience and gobble up as much knowledge as you can. Yoga students hold the power of the practice because they are the ones who show up to class to put in the work. Without students, there is no yoga teacher, there is no guru, and there is no practice. The student's journey is where the magic of yoga happens, and I hope to share some of what I know and shine a light ahead of you to help you on your journey. Follow me on Instagram @kinoyoga and tune in on December 7 for an Extended Q&A with Yoga Alliance, where I'll discuss accessible Ashtanga yoga even further.  If you would like to sign up for yoga courses with me, get your free 30-day membership on Omstars.com & use code: PODCAST. How often do you follow your “knowing”? Your “knowing” is your intuition. The brilliant ideas that arise to help us on our journey. Oprah says the universe speaks to us constantly, but subtly at first. In whispers. If we don't listen, those whispers become loud & soon make themselves known. Listen, follow through, and bloom. Paige Morency-Notario co-owner of Nadical Ashtanga discusses how yoga, mindfulness, and running can help us ride the waves of life and work towards our dreams with confidence, consistency, strength, and more ease. Paige discovered yoga while cross-training for the Marine Corps Marathon over a decade ago, and has been practicing daily ever since. She soon found that yoga brings life into balance; it energizes, while grounding; it strengthens, while limbering; it encourages, while humbling; it is external, yet every bit internal. She has studied with David Robson, Jelena Vesic, Kino MacGregor, Pedro Rubio, Maryl Baldridge, Jen Rene, & Michael Joel Hall (Ashtanga), David Kyle (Rocket), and Mimi Rieger (Power Vinyasa). She's been a daily Mysore-Style Ashtanga practitioner for over seven years and channels many of the lessons learned on her mat while teaching. Questions we asked Paige: 1. What does physical, emotional, and mental agility mean to you and how do you remind yourself you're in bloom? 2. Among the many amazing places you have worked such as the Washington DC's Bilingual Public Education system and the World Bank, what inspired you to commit your career to international development and improving access to quality education around the world?3. What routines help you enter into a flow state? How does it feel? 4. How has yoga helped you find balance, channel your energy, and discover new found physical and emotional strength?5. Why did you create Nadi-Cal Ashtanga and how do you ride the waves of life and entrepreneurship to make your visions come to life more quickly and with more ease?6. How has technology helped you accomplish your personal and business goals and enjoy your journey? 7. Why is it important that change-makers and leaders own their power and share their gifts more consistently and authentically? 8. •    I wasn't really a gym rat growing up, I didn't take kindly to indoor sporting activities, I was more of an outdoorsy kind of girl. Growing up in Canada, I was a girl scout, I went through all the stages in Canada, we call them Girl Guides of Canada, and I went all the way becoming a leader on everything, and then taking that into school, I was a leader in school, I headed the Outdoors Club, I was a camp counselor for school, and in turn during the summers I was camp counselor for my nearby communities, and so outdoor activity was always my go-to. (2:52)•   So this was what, 21 years ago, and now I pass forward... Now we have access to so much more. And so way back then, there was just really only a couple of styles, like methodologies of the yoga practice, and I don't know if they still have this group that brings Yogi rock stars, as they say, into the city for us all to go and flee to and just learn from. They do many workshops, and I used to take up as much as I can from Baron Baptiste, Tim Miller, Kino Macgregor, all the ones that have Ashtanga or Iyengar backgrounds, like the power and then  Baron Baptiste coined the phrase power yoga. Right? And so I was always attracted to this powerful side of it, Power Vinyasa, very athletic. (7:14)•   At the gym one day, I saw my pro fitness coordinator and I hadn't seen her in a while, and all of a sudden I see her and her body has had completely transformed, changed into this machine, like I could see every muscle. She was a walking piece of anatomy, I could see every tendon, every muscle. Just as she moves, I'm like, Oh my gosh, what are you doing? So she passed her trainer's name onto me, and that's when I got into the lifting weights. (10:25)•    I teach the Lit yoga method, which is a physical therapy-based yoga practice, and so every time you come into the class it's very much a tune up to your body, we get the core integrated, we get your big stabilizers, big movers or glutes fired up because like I call it, this snoozy glutes or glute amnesia, I'm sure you've heard it in your world, it's like you need to wake those suckers up because they tend to go to sleep on us. And then the spine, resetting the spine, so bringing the spine into neutral, the pelvis into neutral, it's all encompassing even before we get into our flows. So at that point, at the beginning of the class is when I get you all in that reset position so that you're ready and able to take on stuff when you're on your feet. (13:08)•   And that's the key right there, Kristi, is your energy, your energy. When you have so much clutter in your life and then you're clutter in your mind, and that monkey mind is going like a broken record and you just cannot get out of the hamster wheel. You feel... You actually feel like you're spilling your energy, your energy is being pulled in different directions, kind of like elastic girl, you can imagine, but with elastic girl, that's her super power, but it's not our super power. If we're being pulled in different directions... It actually is the opposite. And we know this, and I've said this mantra before, you can't pour from an empty cup, so we're spilling all this energy out, and we're really not optimizing our performance in our life, our performance in our head, are critical thinking skills, we're not on point. Welcome to Meditations for Manifesting with Kino MacGregor. This is your daily reminder to practice meditation. We will begin with a few minutes of mindfulness, focusing on the reality of our breath, and then bring our attention to a state of being beyond our breath, body, and mind.  I will lead us through today's meditation on healing and happiness, bringing your mind into a contemplative state. From here, you can start cultivating a space to process your emotions, taking the first steps toward healing.  It starts by focusing on the simple reality of your breath, right down to the simplest sensation of air going in and out of your nostrils. Focusing on this minute detail brings your mind inward and creates an anchor for your mind to latch onto the next time the reality of your emotions gets the better of you.  This kind of focus only gets easier with practice, so be kind to yourself during our practice. The steady pace of your breath is meant to bring your mind inward and below the frequency of your thoughts, so keep those thoughts from passing judgment on what you feel. Remember that you are not your thoughts, nor are you your emotions, and the more you practice cultivating this contemplative state of mind, the easier it will be to observe these thoughts and emotions as separate from yourself. Don't hide from any negative thoughts you may have. Be brave and accept them for what they are, but recognize that your emotional reaction to them is temporary. Whatever obstacle you are facing now, you can handle it. This space we are cultivating here, the space beyond the breath, the body, and the mind, is a space of infinite possibility.  What does it feel like to be free of this personal challenge? How would it feel to solve the bigger problems in your community? Take a breath and imagine it. Breathe out. Notice how it feels to be liberated from your suffering. Hold onto it for a moment, and let that sensation plant the seeds of peace and love in your mind. All it takes is five minutes of meditative practice to change the frequency of your thoughts. After a few minutes of meditation, you will notice a shift in your mind and your body. All it takes to start is a breath. Start your practice today with a meditation toward healing and happiness.  Stay connected: @kinoyoga and @omstarsofficial View my teaching schedule, blogs, etc on Kinoyoga.com Get your free 30 day membership on Omstars.com& use code: PODCAST

Joseph Armstrong is an Authorized level 2 teacher of Ashtanga Yoga. He teaches yoga with feet planted firmly in tradition and gaze turned towards the future. His search for a more present and peaceful life first led him to the practice in 2008. A few years later he was in India, studying intensively. After finally overcoming a long struggle with addiction, Joseph began experimenting with Ashtanga Yoga. He understood quickly that the lineage was calling to him to deepen his practice. He underwent a 2 year apprenticeship program at the world renowned Miami Life Center, continuing his education under his teachers Tim Feldmann and Kino MacGregor. In 2016 he completed 2 months of study in Mysore under Sharath Jois. 2017 brought Joseph to Guatemala where he taught Mysore Style for over a year while also traveling and giving workshops in Europe and the Americas. 2019 brought him back to Miami and his yoga family at MLC. Joseph teaches yoga because attempts to do any and everything else ended disastrously. But when he finally devoted himself to his passion, he became an asset to himself and others. He hopes his practice allows him to be ever more loving and to exist gently.

#51: Seeking Unity: Consciously or Unconsciously?

Yoga Inspiration

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 4, 2021 63:13

Every one of us must ask ourselves, sometimes more than once: what is yoga? By definition, yoga means unity - but what do you want unity with? More specifically - are you seeking this unity consciously or unconsciously? To clarify, it’s not important whether you are conscious or unconscious of your spiritual journey.  Rather, it’s important to recognize your spiritual quest as just that - a journey.  The unconscious seeker may take longer to reach a revelation, but the conscious seeker risks the ego getting in the way of their growth. That’s why it’s important to learn the historical context of yoga and apply the methodology of yoga to your practice. I’m discussing the history of Patanjali’s teachings and the dichotomy in his yoga sutras to teach us how to find this unity. Prakriti and Purusha are the dichotomy at the center of Patanjali's teachings.  Prakriti - the phenomenal world - is our material world, the ephemeral where the only constant is change. On the flip side is Purusha - the noumenal world.  Purusha is the singularity that exists independently of our sense and perception; it is that oneness we seek within ourselves and with our universe. According to Patanjali, the Purusha within us has agreed at some moment to forget what it is.  We have forgotten who we are, and the oneness within us now identifies itself as our bodies or our thoughts. Yoga practice teaches us that it is actually neither.  Yoga is a quest for the unity we seek within ourselves and with the world, and to Patanjali, unity could be dangerous if one does not involve the higher mind in the process. That’s why I’m teaching you the history of the yogi’s journey. Without this framework, anything can become yoga, and it’s very important to maintain the practice of yoga as sacred. It’s important to set out a time for your personal practice so you can continue to build on this foundation as you make this spiritual journey.  I’m happy to share this time with you on your yoga journey. If you want to share some of the most important lessons you’ve learned on your quest, send an email to info@kinoyoga.com. Tell me - what does yoga mean to you? What are you thinking about right now? If you think too hard about it, you’ll realize our minds are always distracted. We are always focused on the business of daily life, which is why so many of us avoid the silence. I’m here to tell you that these moments of silence are important.  It is in this silence that we come to truly know ourselves, and through this silence is how we fight the battles within ourselves. You just have to get comfortable with it. Meditation can help you do that. Meditation trains us to survive the silence. Through meditative practice, we can utilize the quiet moments between our breath and rebel against the ingrained habits of our subconscious mind. For some of us, meditation makes us anxious. For others, we get sleepy. I have a few recommendations for all my meditators listening to this podcast, but first — I want to ask you to close your eyes. By closing our eyes, we force the mind’s attention inward, force it to focus on something other than the outside world, if even just for a minute. It could be the longest sixty seconds of your life, but the silence is there to help you. Sitting in silence will strengthen your mind and give you the power to break all those old negative ways of thinking. If you’re worried about the silence, I recommend that you pay attention to your breathing. Don’t change the way you breathe, just watch yourself breathing until there is no longer silence - there is just you and your breath.  Taking on your own mind takes courage, and your courage inspires me to step onto the yoga mat every day and practice not only my asanas but my meditation. Tune in now to learn more benefits of meditative practice, and take advantage of my guided meditation episodes. It’s up to you to get on the mat every day. Send an email to info@kinoyoga.com and tell me what inspires you to continue practicing yoga. You could be invited to guest spot on The Yoga Inspiration Podcast with Kino MacGregor!

This is a practice in meditation and mindfulness and how to integrate a sitting practice into your yoga practice. If you’re intimidated by meditation - or just afraid you’re going to fall asleep in practice! - I invite you to tune in for this guided meditation. I will begin by drawing your attention to your senses and the inner experience. Our senses are normally directed to the external world and our day-to-day lives, but while meditating we have the chance to consciously direct our senses inward. The easiest way to do this is to pay attention to your breath. Acknowledge the feeling as you inhale and exhale. Don’t try and control or manipulate your breathing pattern, just acknowledge and recognize it. It will be your focal point as I guide you through this meditative practice. Meditation is an important part of the spiritual journey in yoga. It teaches us to acknowledge our experiences without getting lost in the often overwhelming sensations of our feelings and our emotions. When you practice meditation, you are training your mind to break old habits and see different opportunities. As your mind wanders - as it inevitably will as you sit quietly on your mat - all you have to do is call it back to your breath with a sense of kindness. There is no judgment, only acknowledgment and a gentle call back to the meditative state of mind.  As I said, this is a judgment-free zone. Meditation is no easy feat and it takes practice. Why not start the practice today? I want to hear about your accomplishments on the yoga mat. Send an email to info@kinoyoga.com and tell me - what does yoga mean to you? #46: How to Find an Anchor While Meditating (Part 2)

Yoga Inspiration

The two practices of sati, or mindfulness, and metta, love and kindness, are distinctly different, but you cannot practice one without the other. It’s important to understand their differences in order to make the most out of your yoga practice. To start with, you cannot practice metta without sati. Sati is the mindfulness and awareness of what is. There is no imagination or visualization - what is simply is, and we must stay grounded in this practice in order to achieve mindfulness. Achieving this mindfulness is easier said than done because sitting and meditating is very intimidating to most of us. We are carrying existential pain and suffering deep within us and meditation forces us to sit with this pain. There’s absolutely nothing comfortable about that. But as you practice sati, you are practicing ways to observe this pain without fueling it. This objective way of looking at our thoughts and emotions makes it possible to practice metta. Metta is the power of creation through conscious thinking. When we practice metta, we are actively planting positive thoughts in our heart’s center of love, kindness, peace, and harmony, both toward ourselves and those around us.  These positive thoughts can be things like “I am worthy” or “I deserve to be happy,” but they can also be as simple as the mere thought of love. Thinking of someone or something you love is part of the practice of metta. These thoughts tap into the vibration of love and give you the power to carry it within you and share it with others. As you listen today, think of your mind and heart as a garden. Sati will clear away the overgrowth of negative thoughts so you can plant the seeds of metta in an open mind and an open heart.  I hope you recognize how important sati and metta are to not only our yoga practice but also to our own peace of mind. You cannot practice metta without sati because you cannot plant seeds of love before recognizing the pain and suffering that exists within your heart.  Share some of what’s in your heart with me and my listeners. There is a transformation that happens with each practice. Your heart expands and you are better able to tap into that vibration of love, peace, and harmony. But, as with all things in this life, practice is not always easy. We require sustenance to stay on the mat, and I bring this meditation to you today to inspire you and sustain you as we continue our yoga journey together.  Meditation is a practice. You don’t need to be perfect the first time you do it, or even the second or third! Your mind will wander and your nose might itch, but all you need to do is follow each breath with attentiveness. Meditative practice requires an anchor, and this anchor will be your breath. Start now. Inhale. Exhale. This natural pace of your breath will act as your guide through this meditation. Notice the actual sensation of your breath, the way it feels on your upper lip and through your nostrils. Take a moment to find this sensation because it will be your anchor on this journey. If your mind wanders, don’t stress. If your foot falls asleep, don’t move. Just acknowledge these thoughts and sensations and use the anchor of your breath to bring you back to the meditation. I apply this same advice to the powerful emotions that may bubble to the surface as we practice. Try not to react. These feelings are transitory, so observe with mindfulness and move forward. When you choose not to react to these minor disruptions, you become stronger on this meditative path to mindfulness. And when you practice mindfulness, you’re better able to bring your focus to the heart’s center, the center of love and kindness, the center of metta. It is here that you can tap into the vibration of love.  Join me now on this meditative journey as we tap into the vibrations of love, peace, and harmony and learn the importance of practicing self-metta just as we practice yoga. Love is our natural state, and this practice today will bring you back into that natural state of being. Share some of the things you’ve learned on the yoga mat with me and my listeners. Every once in a while on this show we like to pull the blinds down (or the pull the curtain away) and show you what it really sounds like at the Chai Stand gossiping on Gokulum High Street in India. Tim Feldmann is hilarious (unfortunately for him not quite Jewish) and shares a very similar sense of humor to Russell. The two of them create their own little giggling world together and we are delighted to share this hour exploring Tim's life with you! Tim appears to be a Dane. He comes from a nice, boring, Danish town that is unpronounceable to North Americans (believe us, we tried!) and he is a shining an example of how good and wonderful a boy can grow up to be when raised with loving parents. Tim is full of charm, and unlike most of our guests, had a childhood free of trauma or other secondary causalities. He became a dancer as he loved movement and was an energetic child, who had a fabulous mother that encouraged him in every way. His father, despite being an engineer, was astonished that his son got paid to work as a dancer in Australia, and thus, supported his dream wholeheartedly. However, after a fall of some 6 stories down a mountainside cliff, Tim found himself finally having to change things up and discovered yoga as an avenue for self healing. You do sometimes have to hit rock bottom, and in Tim's case, that was quite literal. Tim found that Ashtanga Yoga was a unique and interesting form and pursued it with hungry passion every since his first introduction. He was set on the yoga path by his first teacher Lino Miele and was Authorized to teach directly by the founder of the Ashtanga Yoga Method, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, and his grandson, R. Sharath Jois. Tim's humorous, straight forward yet profound teaching style makes him a cherished teacher in the Ashtanga yoga lineage, traveling extensively throughout Asia, Australia, Europe and the Americas. He also founded the Miami Life Center with his wife Kino MacGregor, which continues to expand to this day! Meditation is an essential component of the spiritual path of yoga. Before you tune in to another episode of the Yoga Inspiration Podcast, I invite you to join me in this meditative practice.  It’s easy to have theoretical conversations about meditation, but engaging in the act of meditating is the only way to truly grow on this yoga journey. Try it with me now! I will guide you through this meditative practice and share some of the benefits of meditation with you. To start, come to a comfortable seated position and allow your eyes to close. Try not to change your position too much during this practice, but do stay comfortable. It’s important to keep your eyes closed during this practice in order to become aware of your senses. When your eyes are closed, the sense of sight is driven inward and you can start to practice in a state of self-observation. Self-observation is how we enter the meditative mind. When you direct your cognizant mind to your inner world, it becomes much easier to focus on your breathing. Use your breath to create an anchor in your mind.  The easiest way to create this anchor is to bring your attention to your nose, your nostrils, and be aware of the feeling of your breath as it goes in and out. Don’t try to breathe in a particular way, just simply breathe. If your mind starts to wander, acknowledge the adventure, and use your breath to bring yourself back to your inner world. Your job on the yoga mat today is to acknowledge where your mind goes without engaging in any of the thoughts. Simply acknowledge, observe, and return to your breathing. When you do this, your mind will become clearer and you can start to truly practice metta. Even if you’ve never meditated before, this practice is the perfect place to start. Get comfortable and get ready to enter the meditative mind! Share the lessons you’ve learned on the yoga mat with me and my listeners. Training the mind is hard work. Any of us who have spent time on a yoga mat can attest to that. But what if I told you there was a secret to training your mind? That secret is meditation. Meditation allows us to gaze at the inner plane, and it’s through this self-observation that we can effectively calm and train the mind.  Now, the practice of meditation can mean many things to many different people. Perhaps you already include it as part of your yoga routine, or maybe you even practiced meditation first before you took up yoga. Anyone can practice meditation, and this episode of the Yoga Inspiration podcast is meant for beginners and advanced meditation practitioners. Meditation requires a state of deep introspective concentration, and even the most advanced meditators can still have difficulty relaxing the mind. In fact, to be considered “good” at meditating, you must be able to focus on your breathing for 60 seconds.  While we won’t be trying to achieve that today, all I ask is for you to consider meditation as a way to celebrate and accept the cycles of life we go through. I’m sharing my experiences from my most recent meditation retreat to hopefully inspire you to give meditation a try. To start meditation, it’s important to find a neutral object to focus on. Many of us use breathing as our center of focus. We all breathe, and breath is unlikely to have any emotional attachment to any thoughts of any kind. You want to keep your mind clear, and meditating on your breath flowing in and out can help concentrate your mind. There are key differences between the breathing in meditation and the breathing we do in yoga. While meditating, you breathe as normal and learn to recognize your pattern of breath. This recognition can help you notice the way your breathing may change depending on the various life situations you find yourself in.  I discuss how and why meditative breathing is different from yoga, and I answer some key questions many yogis have about starting and maintaining a regular meditative practice. Meditation is key to training your mind and breaking any bad habits of negative thinking, so tune in now to step into that meditative mindset and begin retraining your brain. I’m taking a little inspiration from my Chat & Chai classes at the Miami Life Center for this special episode. Please tune in now for a special chat and a meditation that will help you reconnect with the innocence of your mind. Remember when you first started yoga? That beginner’s mindset is what we’re trying to get back to today.  The longer you practice, the more important it is to check back in with yourself and your beginner’s mind. Too often we come to the mat with an agenda - sometimes it’s to do a headstand, or maybe we want a deeper backbend, but when you come to practice with a plan in your head, you’re missing out on your moment to really connect.  That moment goes beyond the physical poses. Yoga is your chance to reconnect with your spirit and get back in touch with the deeper intention of the practice. Remember - yoga is an initiation of the heart.  The more we practice, and the more we learn about the physical practice and poses and bending, the further we stray from that excitement and wonder we felt that first day on the mat - our beginner’s mind. Yes, I love learning about yoga, but I also love how my yoga practice is a chance to unlearn all that I know.  When you come to the yoga mat, you are starting on a journey that will turn you into a totally new person, if you let it. In order to be re-invented, you have to acknowledge that - despite all you know - you really don’t know anything. Your spirit remains untouched by all that your mind knows, and your yoga practice is the rare moment where you have the freedom to spend time within the freshness and newness of the human spirit. Come explore this freshness of spirit and reconnect with the innocence of the beginner’s mind. Share the lessons you’ve learned on the yoga mat with me and my listeners. Yoga is here to change the very foundation of the way you think. But that can only start when you change the way you inhabit your body. Join me in this episode for a special dose of daily yoga inspiration.  This special meditative practice will open your heart and change the way you look at yourself. The society we live in teaches us to toughen up and put on a happy face. But the longer we live in society, the more we become hardened to the ways of society, and it’s hard to let go of that, even as we practice yoga.  Yet the practice of yoga is designed to break this facade and give us a moment to establish a powerful emotional link with our bodies. The body is the home of your spirit while you are on this earth, and it’s important to understand the value of your body. This value extends beyond the shape and size of your body. Yoga reaches into the very space you inhabit. If you’ve ever felt ashamed of yourself, at yoga practice or elsewhere, then you understand what it feels like to judge your own presence. It’s important to feel your presence and tune into yourself without any judgments or desires. This pure act of feeling and awareness is where we begin our practice. With today’s practice, I’m asking you to open your heart to the idea of self-love and acceptance. Listen today and consider these three things as you practice along with me: Think about the space of the physical body without judgment. If it hurts, let it hurt.  Experience the inner body, the space beneath the skin and thoughts of your conscious mind. Experience the space around your body and feel the space you physically inhabit.  Open your heart and share the lessons you’ve learned on the yoga mat with me and my listeners. You can listen on  Stitcher -  I-Tunes   - Lybsin or click here if you are not sure Kino is one of those teachers that barely needs introduction because she is super famous, he has a quarter million subscribers to her YouTube channel, 679,000 followers on Instagram, 43,000 followers on Twitter and another quarter million (almost) Facebook likes to her page. She has also been on the cover of Yoga Journal many times. She is one of those very rare teachers who has gone very deep down the asana route, currently learning the 5th series of Ashtanga Yoga which is the equivalent of performing an athletic feast worth of many gold medals in the olympics, and she is a pleasure to talk to. What is Special About Kino Reading her book "Sacred Fire" her story feels like a fairy tale.  She caught the yoga bug very early on and started traveling to India in her early 20s.  Her ability in asana and her power to communicate and teach make her a great combination, so much so that she attracts massive numbers of students wherever she travels. But it was not all fairy tale. She also had to take a lot of heat from the "yoga police" which as you know by now, does exist.... I know... I can barely believe it myself but there is such a thing. She has been bashed and criticized for her outreach and for trying to expand the circle of people she reaches with her passion, which is yoga. Today the Miami Life Center is a vibrant store front on 6th street in South Beach.  It is always full of people and great energy and there are great instructors always present, with assistants.  They also have great workshops going on all the time. And the best part about Kino is that she comes with Tim.  Tim Feldman, who is also a very advanced and serious practitioner is her husband and together they created the center.  I hope to have Tim on the podcast soon as well. Claudia Altucher:        Hey, it's me, Claudia. Thanks for listening to the podcast. I'm really grateful to all of you who've been giving me some amazing feedback. I wanted to give you a little – very quick intro to this special episode. I actually interviewed Kino in person and that was the first time I did this, because I've been doing ridiculous hours of waking up to interview people who are in Asia, Japan, Bali, Australia, and then some other teachers that are not so far, but it was never really – even though that Skype face-to-face, sometimes you are able to do it, it was different to do it at the studio. And I was also in Miami, so I was practicing in the studio, and I thought that was something that was very interesting. We arrived about half an hour early, and opening the door, there was one of Kino's senior teachers. His name is Patrick Noland, and he recognized me from prior times that I've practiced at the Miami Life Center, and we started to talk, you know, sort of introduction. Kino was doing a final exam for some students on another room, so what I found curious that I wanted to share with you is the schedule that Patrick told me he had had on that day. And I had it in a recording on my phone, but I apologize, I can't put it here 'cause the quality is really bad and I didn't want it to affect you, but he told me that on that day, he had woken up at 4:00 AM to walk his dog and then he taught, at 6:00 AM, a Mysore class all the way to 8:30 AM, then he was gonna practice his own practice – he does something serious, something really advanced. Then he was gonna go and – no, then he was gonna teach a led class. So instead of Mysore, a led class is very – he actually does the count and all the students go at the same time, and then, after that, he was going to drive to the other side of town to give a one-hour private lesson. So I thought that was very eye-opening for all of us who are thinking, "Oh, I would really like to be a yoga teacher," because I think it may put things in perspective a little. I couldn't believe the level of activity that Patrick had on that day. But anyways, we chit-chatted for a little bit, and then Kino finished her class and exams, and we started talking. And so here she is, Kino MacGregor. Claudia Altucher:        Okay, so – yeah. Okay. So before we start, Kino, I just want to say that I'm a little jealous of you. [Laughter]  Actually, not a little, but a lot, and it happened because I started reading Sacred Fire, which is a book that it feels very confidential, like you tell a lot of little stories that are not in a proper, you know, Ashtanga book, and it felt like a fairytale, like a really good fairytale. So it's the good kind of envy, but – [laughs] – at the same time, it's envy. So – but I want to introduce you to my listeners although you don't quite need that much introduction, but Kino MacGregor is an international yoga teacher. She is the author of two books, The Power of Ashtanga Yoga and Sacred Fire, and you have another one coming up, which we'll talk about soon. She's also the producer of six Ashtanga yoga DVDs. She's the co-founder of Miami Life Center, and the founder of the Miami Yoga Magazine. Now, the amazing thing about her is her YouTube channel has almost five million views, her Instagram account has 514,000 followers, and she has almost 40,000 followers on Twitter. Amazing. Kino is one of the select group of people to receive the certification to teach Ashtanga yoga by its founder, Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of India, and she was – you received this before the age of 30, which is an amazing accomplishment. Welcome to The Yoga Podcast, Kino. Kino MacGregor:       Thank you. Thanks for having me. Claudia Altucher:        I'm very happy that you not only joined me but you let me do it here in the Miami Life Center. You were just doing a final exam or something like that? Kino MacGregor:       There was a course, an intensive course, that we just wrapped up right before Christmas. Claudia Altucher:        Ah, okay, so that was the end of it and then – that was very interesting. We have some sounds of that, so… Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. Right. Claudia Altucher:        So as I said before, I'm a little envious of you. Yoga came so easy, in a way, and at the same time, not so easy. You were very young. You were 19 or so? Kino MacGregor:       I was 19 when I did my first yoga class, and it was not an Ashtanga yoga class; it was a Sivananda class, more focused on relaxation and sort of a restorative view of how to use the postures, and I did my first Ashtanga yoga class when I was 22 years old, and it was really then that I kind of committed to doing the practice more regularly. Claudia Altucher:        Right, and you said in this book that I find fascinating, Sacred Fire, that you were looking for every kind of exercise before that. You had done Zumba and aerobics, all kinds of things, but something clicked for you in the yoga right away. What would you say – what was it, do you think? 'Cause you went to a class and the instructor even said to you, "Do what you can," right? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. My first Ashtanga yoga class, the thing that really sort of resonated for me was that the practice answered a searching, sort of a latent searching that I'm not sure I was aware of consciously. But when I did the practice, there was something that really settled inside of me, and it instinctively drew me back to keep practicing, and so that's really the first and probably most fundamental feeling to really go deeper into the yoga path. Claudia Altucher:        And then, at the age of 22, you find yourself in New York City, right? Kino MacGregor:       Exactly, yeah. Claudia Altucher:        And you were studying something in the university? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, I moved to New York City after some years of sort of just partying and kind of losing yourself in youth and fun and this sort of thing, and I moved to New York City to join a Master's degree program from New York University, and I sort of thought, "Well, I'm gonna get my life back on track." That's sort of what I thought. I thought that I would go to graduate school and maybe get a Ph.D. and get some internships and sort of get a real job and that sort of thing. But when I moved to New York, what actually happened is that I joined a traditional Mysore-style class, and that, for me, really solidified my connection to daily practice. I never thought that I would do yoga every day. It's not something that I, "Oh, I'm gonna do yoga every day." Claudia Altucher:        I don't think anyone thinks that. Kino MacGregor:       No, yeah, I mean, some people are sort of all-or-nothing. Some people who are fitness-oriented people or they go to the gym every day or something like that, I never had any physical discipline before yoga, so it was never really like – I didn't have a daily fitness regimen or routine, not when I was growing up, or really anything. I would work out randomly or something like that. So when I moved to New York and I joined the Mysore-style class, the teacher, he said to me, "This class meets six days a week. You can come at 8:00." And there was no option to come three days a week or drop in or something like that. It was just sort of like, "You're here every day or you don't do it." So I came every day, and after my first week, I could barely move my arms, and after about a month, I had changed my sleep cycle, and after three months, I wanted to change the way that I was eating. It changed everything about my life 'cause now I had this thing I did every day in the morning, and it required me to make different lifestyle decisions and different lifestyle choices. And very quickly, after that first class, I got the inspiration to actually go to India, to go to Mysore. So I actually got that inspiration and I followed that dream, really, all the way to Mysore, to India, where I met ____, I met Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Claudia Altucher:        But before that, I even want to point out the teacher that said to you, "This meets six times a week," he's just no ordinary teacher either, right? [Laughs] Kino MacGregor:       Right, no, this was Govinda. His name was Russell at the time, so Govinda Kai, and – Claudia Altucher:        He's an amazing teacher. He's awesome like you are. Kino MacGregor:       He's really awesome. He's really, really awesome. Yeah, for sure. Claudia Altucher:        So it's amazing, and you said he directed you to some books on – you had some struggles with food, like I think every woman in the planet. I know I do. He directed you to some books on eating, one called Conscious Eating, was it? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, for sure. I remember, after I had been practicing for maybe a couple of months, I remember looking at what I brought for lunch for my internship, and it was just this sort of hodgepodge of things, and I remember that dessert was Mentos, and I thought, "This doesn't really seem so healthy," and I kind of read the ingredients, and I was like, "What are even the ingredients in this?" It was like sugar and Red No. 5 and Blue No. 2 and Yellow No. 20, and I thought, "That doesn't seem really good for me," and I went to my yoga teacher and I said, "What recommendations do you have for how to eat in a correct yoga lifestyle?" And he said, "Well, you could try to read this book called Conscious Eating. So I read that book and it really changed the way that I thought about things, and one of the most important takeaways from Conscious Eating was Gabriel Cousens, he sort of did this research, they cited this statistic where he said that if we took all of the grain that feeds the livestock for all of the animals that are raised for meat production and consumption and we took that grain and we fed that to people, then world hunger would end today. Claudia Altucher:        Wow. Kino MacGregor:       So if we just simply redistributed that grain, then all the people who are starving in underdeveloped countries and all the people who are homeless and starving in our own countries, we would be able to feed them all, and I thought – Claudia Altucher:        Wow. Kino MacGregor:       I just really thought there was no moral and ethical argumentation for eating meat on even on that level. I care about the environment and I care about doing the right thing morally and ethically. And so pretty much after I read that paragraph, I pretty much woke up the next day and made the choice to vegetarian. Claudia Altucher:        Wow, radically, just like – and you haven't come back to eating meat ever? Kino MacGregor:       No. Claudia Altucher:        Wow, and you're fine? You never miss the protein or the – Kino MacGregor:       Well, I don't – Claudia Altucher:        I mean, you do some pretty intense yoga moves. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. [Laughs] Yeah. I mean, I don't miss the protein. I make a concerted effort to eat the vegetarian sources of protein, and if I'm feeling really depleted, like if I'm doing a lot of asana, I'm doing a lot of teaching, I make sure to maybe take a protein shake or something like that, that's gonna help create sort of a balanced approach to nutrition. In the beginning, I really wasn't into that. I just kinda stopped eating meat, just kinda ate whatever for a little while, but I mean, there's a lot of argumentation about which is more health-related issue, and I really think that's a personal decision that you need to figure out between you and your nutritionist or your doctor or something like that based on every individual's health needs, 'cause some people have serious health concerns that maybe they need to eat a particular food or even a particular meat in order to sort of save their life, which is completely acceptable, but I don't have anything like that. Claudia Altucher:        Right. Kino MacGregor:       I feel really good eating the vegetarian diet. I try to do the extreme version, where I was vegan for a while, and I've tried to be raw vegan for a while, and that was really extreme, and I did not feel so healthy. Claudia Altucher:        It's hard. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, it was really difficult and I really felt sort of – I don't know – a little too restrictive. It felt a little bit almost like an addiction on some level for me. Other people do it and they don't feel like that, but I did. And so you asked me if I ever miss the protein. I don't miss protein, like, I haven't eaten meat for so long that even when I see it, it kind of – I start to think about it and makes me physically uncomfortable when I think about what that was and what that came from. Like, that was a being and it had a life, and then now it's sitting there, cooked, you know, like your thigh muscle was once attached to you and then it would be cooked and served to someone. Kind of trips me out. But what I do miss – and this is gonna sound completely random – what I do miss sometimes is the fun experience of it, you know, like a community experience of not having to be like, "Oh, do you have a vegetarian option?" or, "Do you have this?" or, you know, or you walk by and you – like, on the 4th of July in the United States and you smell barbecue. You know, barbecued vegetables also smell good, but when you smell barbecued meat and that sort of thing, none of those smells bother me, but there's a community aspect that I think slowly is starting to shift, but 15 years ago, when I kinda made that choice or 14 years ago when I made that choice, it was really sort of like a flag in the North Pole, sort of staking out new territory. Claudia Altucher:        Wow. Kino MacGregor:       And there's more options and you're sort of less ostracized for making those choices now than maybe before. Claudia Altucher:        Than back then, yes. And so is it true, then, when you got to India for the first time, I believe you were 22 or something? 23? You had no hair? Kino MacGregor:       Yeah. So one of the things that I did in my first year of practice is, when I was practicing, it seemed like this was the first time that I really began to question all the choices that I'd made up until then. Before yoga, again, I had no physical discipline. I was either an academic, or when I wasn't studying, I was intensively partying. So I sort of had this party on the weekends, study during the week, and somehow it all managed to balance itself out.   Claudia Altucher:        Typical New Yorker. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, typical Miami Beach too, you know, Miami Beach. Kino MacGregor:       Yeah, something more typical East Coast, something like that. So what I did was, slowly, I realized, "Well – " so I was looking at my clothes and I thought, "Well, who am I when I wear these clothes? Is this me or am I trying to put on – am I trying to be the party girl or am I trying to be the studious girl or am I trying to be this girl or that girl?" So I gave away almost all my clothes and then I used to have so many different colors of hair. I used to have light blue hair, red hair, and then I had orange hair and strawberry-colored hair. I used to have all these crazy colors. I used to wear wigs and then cut it and grow it and cut it in weird ways and all these kinda strange things, and then, I don't know, I was sitting there in New York after I practiced for a little bit, and I just kinda got fed up with just READ THE FULL TRANSCRIPT HERE
