In this final week of our series Simple Rules for Chaotic Times, we explore John Wesley's third rule: “Attend to the ordinances of God” — or in modern language, “Stay in love with God.” Together we reflect on what it means to center our lives around love — love for God, love for neighbor, and love for self — even in times of division and discord. This week, we continue our sermon series “Simple Rules for Chaotic Times” by exploring what it means to Do Good. Building on last week's reflections on “Do No Harm,” we turn to Galatians 6:1–10 to uncover how a rhythm of life centered on Jesus invites us to care deeply for others, live with integrity, and persevere through hardship and criticism. This week marks the second week of our series “Simple Rules for Chaotic Times” as we explore the first of John Wesley's General Rules: “Do no harm.” Drawing from The Epistle to the Romans 12, John Wesley's 18th-century teachings, and our current cultural moment, we reflect on what it means to be a community that resists perpetuating harm—whether in personal relationships or systemic injustices. This practice isn't about easy rules but about honest self-reflection, naming the harm we've caused, and choosing to live differently. This past Sunday, we concluded our sermon series on generosity by examining the power of naming our “so that”—the passions that drive us—and taking steps to bring them to life. We look at Jesus' prayer for God's kin-dom to come “on earth as it is in heaven” and what it means to pray for tomorrow's bread today. Together, we imagine a community that mends what is broken, embraces diversity, and embodies hope and generosity in the world. We're in week three of our series “So That”, exploring what it means to live generously — not just when the timing feels right, but as an intentional way of life. In this message, we look at Ephesians and Paul's vision for a diverse, unified community shaped by grace. God's generosity is not just something we receive but something we embody — SO THAT our lives can be poured out for the good of others. Today we continue our "So That" Series" where we dig into what it really means to be generous — not just with money, but with the kind of life we are building. We look honestly at why money makes us uncomfortable, where the idea of “tithing” comes from, and why generosity is about more than just following rules. This conversation invites you to name your own “so that” — the reason behind your giving, your choices, and the story you want to tell with your life and community. Mark Clifton, Mark Hallock, and Dan Hurst discuss some ways to help inject new life into the weekly worship gathering. Some Highlights: Make sure the gathering is truly God-centered, not man-centered. Help people feel the weight and joy of worshiping God, not shallow and joyless. Let theological conviction shape every component, not pragmatism. Preach the Word with precision, passion, and application, not sloppy, dull, and impractical. Celebrate the Lord's Supper consistently with intentionality, not as an afterthought. Do what you can with excellence, not what you can't and not half-way. Keep it simple, not unnecessarily complex. Choose songs that are singable and sound in doctrine, not simply what is popular. Encourage congregational singing, not disengaged observing. Make sacrificial giving a worship opportunity, not something to be avoided. Regularly cast vision for how our worship of God must fuel the mission of God to make disciples, never assuming people drift toward the mission.
In this first week of our new series “So That,” we explore what it means to embody generosity, especially with our finances. Many of us carry stress, baggage, and even harmful church narratives around money, yet Jesus invites us to trust God's provision and live generously now—not someday when life feels easier. What story do you want your life to tell, and what steps can you take so that generosity becomes part of that story? This week, we continue our series Stories That Last by exploring one of Jesus' most well-known parables—the story of the Lost Son. But before Jesus tells this story, He first responds to the criticism of the Pharisees for eating with “sinners” by telling three stories: about a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. We reflect together not only on the radical grace of the Father but on who Jesus is really speaking to—the religious leaders. These stories aren't just about individual repentance, but about how we see people. In God's eyes, people are never disposable, never beyond welcome, and always worthy of being found and celebrated. We're reminded that hospitality, table-sharing, and mutual care are sacred—embodying the very heart of Jesus. The challenge? To extend the same grace to all people, just as Jesus does. This week we close out our Flourish sermon series in a special way—gathered not in a sanctuary of stone, but in the sanctuary of creation itself. We return to the words of Jesus at the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, where He offers a call to action: to build our lives on a foundation that can endure. To flourish, Jesus teaches, is not to escape difficulty—but to root ourselves in values that are practiced, embodied, and tested in the wilderness of life. Flourishing happens not on the mountaintop or the cruise ship, but in the grit and grace of real life. This message challenges us to consider what we're building on. Are our values lived out or just ideals we admire from a distance? Do we have the kind of foundation that can weather the storms of life? In our Flourish sermon series, we are exploring Jesus' teachings in Matthew, focusing on how our values—inclusion, authenticity, courage, and curiosity—shape our lives. Matthew 7:1-6 challenges us to judge fairly, prioritizing curiosity over condemnation in our relationships. Jesus calls us to discern wisely, remain open to understanding others, and protect what is sacred in our lives. Today, we are celebrating this call through the reaffirmation of baptism, recognizing God's work in each of us, and embracing the beauty of shared journey and transformation. In Week 3 of our Flourish sermon series, we continue exploring Jesus' inaugural sermon in Matthew, where he challenges us to love not just those who are easy to love, but even our enemies. It's easy to care for those who agree with us or support us, but what about those who challenge us, hurt us, or seem impossible to love? In this episode, we unpack how flourishing isn't about avoiding discomfort but stepping into it—choosing love, mercy, and compassion even when it's the hardest thing to do. Jesus redefines righteousness not as rule-following, but as living from a place of wholeness—embracing authenticity, vulnerability, and radical grace.
