The news is filled with stories of wars, mass shootings, rights getting overturned, economic uncertainty, and so much continuous devastation, it could seem that we are living in End Times.  Our guest today, scholar, philosopher, and researcher Jean Houston, Ph.D., delves into the idea of finding possibility, even during these times of great grief. We have been conditioned to respond to the terrible, but it does not have to be this way. As an icon in the Human Potential movement, Jean shares ideas about how the Renaissance, with its advancements in music, art, poetry, and cosmology,  came after great plagues and times of war, much like the world situation today. Could we be in a new Renaissance period now? We are once again in a similar time of radical growth, and we have the power within us to see new possibilities and reach mythical potential in our human evolution.   Jean shares stories of her travels and talks about her friendship with scholar Joseph Campbell and how they would have “beautiful fights” which were friendly arguments and deep discussions about mythology and the fate of humanity. Campbell wrote extensively about the “Hero's Journey,” while Jean considered the “Heroine's Journey.” Part of the problem is that 50% of the human race is not being recognized for women's immense creativity and power. Women's ways are missing. With an emphasis on compassion, cooperation, community, and process rather than product and competition, humane creativity must be celebrated by acknowledging the achievements of women.  She also talks about her fateful meeting of evolutionary philosopher and Jesuit priest Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who became one of her mentors when she was much younger. At an early age, they would have profound discussions of time, history, and transformation, as she gained an alternate education of possibilities through their talks. Can intention alone cause changes in physical systems? Can the collective attention of a large group of people to an event cause changes in the coherence changes in physical systems, despite that lack of intention to do so?In today's episode we're going to be exploring a field consciousness hypothesis: so a variation on the idea that consciousness may extend beyond the body and interact casually with physical systems and the consciousness of other beings, in some kind of resonant field phenomena. We're going to be learning about the experiments with random number generators used to test this hypothesis; how human intention and attention has been proved to be able to affect these random outputs in a vast backlog of positive results and meta analyses; We're going to hear about how these experiments have been taken global, looking at collective effects on RNGs of particularly important world events that many people are attending to; we're going to be looking at criticisms of the statistical analysis and a potential experimenter effect; and we're going to be talking about the contrast between some seemingly non-local effects with other localised effects; and as always we're going to be getting into the implications, in this case of whether the ‘field consciousness' effect the data seems to point to, is more likely to be a unified field of consciousness, so in some sense a single mind, or simply the aggregated sum of all individual consciousnesses. Now fortunately to guide us as we carefully test the thickness of the ice on this genuinely alternative world view of consciousness, we have the cognitive psychologist that has pioneered these field consciousness experiments since he founded the Global Consciousness Project at the Princeton University PEAR labs, Roger Nelson. Roger worked at Princeton's PEAR labs in the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, initially under Bob Jahn, for over twenty years until his retirement in 2002. Les trajectoires du trappiste converti, devenu ermite au Sahara au milieu des Touaregs, et du jésuite, paléontologue reconnu travaillant sur le sens de l'évolution de l'univers, semblent aux antipodes. Pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, on observe de surprenantes convergences dans leurs recherches humaines et spirituelles. Pourtant, marqués par la guerre et les conflits, ils ont osé l'un et l'autre un chemin personnel de transformation intérieure en cherchant le Dieu caché qui se révèle tout particulièrement à travers le visage de Jésus de Nazareth. Nourris d'eucharistie et de fraternité, ils se sont efforcés de devenir, chacun à sa manière, les disciples d'un « Évangile vivant ». Anne-Marie Pelletier, dans « Vivre, au risque de l'autre La Bible contre l'identitarisme », également chez DDB, remarque combien les croyants sont aujourd'hui tentés par le repli sur soi et l'affirmation identitaire. Cette posture s'incarne de plus en plus dans des politiques, qui se réclament de la défense de « valeurs chrétiennes ». Tragique méprise, qui se dévoile dès l'instant où l'on ouvre les Écritures, dit l'auteur : dès les premières lignes de la Genèse s'affirme la dynamique d'un accueil, d'une ouverture à l'autre, qui est la condition de la vie. Et cela, sans naïveté, car la Bible sait combien la rencontre de l'autre comporte une dimension d'épreuve. Mais c'est l'épreuve même de la vie et la condition de son avenir, ce hors de quoi nous glissons vers la barbarie. Impossible d'esquiver cette vérité, sauf à user de la Bible à contresens. Enfin, Dom Olivier Quenardel, dans « Descendre vers le sommet - L'humilité dans la Règle de saint Benoît » chez EdB, montre toute la sagesse de celle-ci et tout le bien qu'elle peut nous apporter. Au-delà des communautés monastiques, bien des laïcs, hommes et femmes, en reçoivent un stimulant pour vivre leur baptême, et des chefs d'entreprise pour renouveler le style de leur gouvernance ! N'est-ce pas là un « signe des temps » ? Cet enseignement sur l'humilité, avec l'image paradoxale d'une échelle impossible à gravir autrement qu'en descendant, donne le ton à toute la Règle. Benoît y présente une forme de gradualité dans l'ascension de l'échelle. Plutôt que d'en faire une lecture légaliste et juridique, nous en ferons une lecture contemplative et mystérique, en cherchant à dégager, sous l'écorce de la lettre, l'eau vive qui peut désaltérer tout chercheur de Dieu. He graduated summa cum laude with a BA in religious studies and classical civilizations from the University of Vermont and earned his master's from Yale University, where he studied religion and culture. He is the author of Metamodernism: Or, The Cultural Logic of Cultural Logics and host of the Metamodern Spirituality Podcast. His primary interests include theorizing developments in culture after postmodernism, productively bridging the divide between science and spirituality, and developing sustainable systems for life to flourish. Pred kratkim sem prebral misel Thomasa Jeffersona, ki je nekoč rekel: “Sveča ne izgubi ničesar, če prižge drugo svečo.” Vsakdo, ki je že kdaj nesebično pomagal drugemu, ve, da je to res. Toda žal niso vsi pripravljeni sprejeti te miselnosti dajanja. Pravzaprav večina ljudi ne razmišlja tako. Prepričani so, da deliti nekaj svojega z drugimi pomeni izgubiti. Vsak človek ima eno izmed dveh miselnosti: miselnost pomanjkanja ali obilja. Ljudje, ki negujejo miselnost pomanjkanja, menijo, da je v življenju na voljo le omejena količina dobrin, pa naj gre za denar, priložnosti ali kaj drugega. Svet vidijo kot torto s točno določenim številom kosov, zato si prizadevajo, da bi dobili svojega, in ko jim to uspe, ga želijo za vsako ceno zavarovati in v njem uživati sami. Tisti z miselnostjo obilja pa verjamejo, da je vsega dovolj za vse. Če je življenje torta in se drugi bojujejo za svoj kos, je rešitev ljudi z miselnostjo obilja ta, da bodo pač spekli drugo torto. Če imajo zamisel, jo delijo; prepričani so, da se jim bo porodila nova. Če imajo denar, ga nekaj dajo, saj ga lahko vedno še kaj zaslužijo. Vedo, da je na voljo več (ali drugačnih) virov in dovolj priložnosti, da vsi uspejo. Ljudje smo jemalci ali dajalci. Jemalci jemljejo, grabijo in pogoltnejo vse, kar lahko, da bi zadovoljili svoje potrebe. Življenje vidijo kot tekmo, v kateri lahko zmaga le eden. Na drugi strani pa so dajalci, ljudje, ki dajejo, ustvarjajo in omogočajo, da se stvari zgodijo. Ti ustvarjajo napredek in spodbujajo druge k uspehu. Verjamem, da na tem področju dobimo od življenja to, kar pričakujemo. Lahko zbiramo in potem zadržujemo tisto malo, kar imamo, in ne dobimo ničesar več. Lahko pa to, kar imamo, dajemo in delimo z drugimi in smo tudi sami nagrajeni z obiljem. Naše stališče pomeni ključno razliko. Če združimo moči, če velikodušno dajemo, bomo tako ali drugače dobili veliko več, kot smo dali. Svetopisemsko besedilo iz Pregovorov 11,24 je jasno: “Nekateri razdaja obilo in bogatí še bolj; drugi zadržuje celó, kar se spodobi, pa gre v siromaštvo.” Gojimo miselnost obilja. Bodimo dajalci, ne jemalci; sodelujmo, ne tekmujmo. Prepričan sem, da bomo tako na podlagi lastne izkušnje spoznali resničnost omenjenih besed in doživeli tisto, kar je opisal Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, ki je rekel: “Najbolj zadovoljujoča stvar v življenju je zmožnost dati velik del sebe drugim.”

He has climbed all of Colorado's Fourteeners; found work as an FAA-certificated commercial pilot, a California-licensed building contractor, a publishing editor, a practitioner of Aikido, and a college professor of English; among his many interdisciplinary pursuits are the design and building of Terrell Residence Library (recently renamed the Terrell House Permaculture Living & Learning Center at the University of Maine), writing Building It In Two Languages (a bilingual dictionary of construction terminology), aerial photo documentation of two dam removals (Great Works and Veazie) on the Penobscot River, and once a week since 1991 drafting an installment of A Word In Edgewise, his essay series addressing issues affecting our day-to-day lives — and WERU's oldest continuous short feature. No final do século XIX, um asceta ortodoxo russo chamado Nikolai Fedorov foi inspirado pelo darwinismo para argumentar que os humanos poderiam direcionar sua própria evolução para trazer a ressurreição. Segundo ele, até este ponto, a seleção natural tinha sido um fenômeno aleatório, mas agora, graças à tecnologia, os humanos podiam intervir neste processo. Invocando profecias bíblicas, ele escreveu: "Este dia será divino, impressionante, mas não milagroso, pois a ressurreição será uma tarefa não de milagre, mas de conhecimento e trabalho comum." O movimento foi ganhando destaque não apenas no meio acadêmico, mas também entre empresários e entusiastas da tecnologia. Russel Kurzweil foi um dos primeiros grandes pensadores a trazer essas ideias para o mainstream e legitimá-las para um público mais amplo. Sua ascensão em 2012 para um cargo de diretor de engenharia no Google, anunciou, para muitos, uma fusão simbólica entre a filosofia transhumanista e a influência de grandes empresas de tecnologia. Os transhumanistas hoje exercem enorme poder no Vale do Silício — empreendedores como Elon Musk e Peter Thiel se identificam como crentes desta "nova religião" — onde fundaram think tanks como a Singularity University e o Future of Humanity Institute.  Is it time to redefine the meaning of what it means to be Christian? Traditional religious institutions may be apathetic, or even corrupt, as we've seen in the Catholic priest scandals. Yet, it is possible to feel inspired and start new, according to our guest today, internationally acclaimed theologian Matthew Fox. Matthew was a member of the Dominican Order for 34 years, but then expelled for being a feminist theologian, which went against the traditional teachings. He then started his own institutions for Creative Spirituality. Today Matthew talks about how more and more people have strayed away from traditional religion. Many parents have given up on religion, so how do you teach children about morals and spirit? Matthew discusses how we can emphasize the spirituality aspect more through contemplation and action. Younger people are interested in social reform. He talks about the importance of Christian mystics ranging from Hildegard von Bingen to Meister Eckhart to Pierre Teilhard de Chardin. To recreate religion, we need to consider mysticism. Modern spiritual leaders such as Thích Nhat Hanh and the Dalai Lama are teaching about spirit. Matthew suggests considering various wisdom and studying different ranges of religions. He invites us to ask questions such as how we are related to these great beings like Jesus, Mother Mary, Buddha, or Mohammad. He discusses the intense need for connection that was formerly found though religious communities. Raves are a new way to celebrate rituals. The original purpose was to worship, so he developed the “Cosmic Mass” – a dance celebration ritual without drugs. He talks about how creativity is extremely important. We can look at the planets and stars and ask how we are connected. How can we live in awe? Matthew holds a doctorate in the History and Theology of Spirituality from the Institut Catholique de Paris. He founded the Institute in Culture and Creation Spirituality. This is the first of a three-part series entitled: Made in the Image, Growing in the Likeness.  This first part's title is: Being is Becoming: Why the Trinity is the Template of All Reality.  Marie Woods: Host of the "Everything You Need to Know in a Relationship" podcast and president/ founder of Life Above Foundation. In this enlightening episode, Marie and Doug discuss how the Trinity is the pattern for everything. Doug Scott's Bio Doug Scott, LCSW, works as a mental health counselor in his private practice in Dallas, Texas. After graduating from college in 1997, he served as an international volunteer for two years in Bluefields, Nicaragua. This intense experience changed his life and he returned to the US to pursue graduate studies in clinical social work and pastoral ministry at Boston College. The nexus of spirituality and psychology have always intrigued Doug since childhood and he brings this sensibility to his counseling practice. Doug Scott, LCSW, MA, grew up Catholic and was always drawn to the mystical lineage within this belief system. He had experiences with Jesus, Mary, and angels at an early age. His mystical inclinations have led him to seek the depth of things and teachers who inspire him, including: Richard Rohr, Cynthia Bourgeault, Ilia Delio, Teilhard de Chardin, Alfred North Whitehead, Jim Finley, and the lives of the Saints such as St. Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Teresa of Avila, and Teresa of Lisieux. Doug sees the Trinity in everything and everywhere.  He sees how the living pattern of the Trinity provides the power for evolution in biology, psychology, and spirituality. For him, the Trinity is the codeword or abbreviated name of God. What is the long version? Something like this:  The Who-ing, the Why-ing, and the How-ing of Eternal Becoming. Finally, Doug felt called to develop an approach—a type of pedagogy—that attempts to identify the steps in transformation and how a counselor, spiritual director, or caregiver in any position can help someone else initiate and process through the path of wholeness-making.  This is the SH!PS Approach.    Presentation Outline: A. Ben Luke talks to Michaël Borremans about his influences—from writers to musicians, film-makers and, of course, other artists—and the cultural experiences that have shaped his life and work. Borremans, born in 1963 in Geraardsbergen in Belgium, is one of the most original painters working today. He marries a technical brilliance, born of a careful study of the style and touch of the Old Masters, with a sensibility and atmosphere that are completely his own. Though they depict figures, objects and environments, his paintings remain enigmatic, refusing to settle into easily readable narratives. They are full of uncanny detail and incident which is all the more pronounced because of his sensual handling of the paint. Though he is a perceptive observer of people, things and space, Borremans says he paints culture as opposed to nature. When he makes a painting of a human face, for instance, he is not concerned with the mimetic process of portraiture, rather with a perception of the ineffable nature of human psychology; with what it might mean to be—and to represent—a human being today. Even though it is characterised by an often absurd playfulness, an abiding sense of isolation and disquiet permeates Michaël's work. He discusses the ongoing influence of Francisco de Goya, Diego Velázquez and Jean-Siméon Chardin, the inspirational comedy of Monty Python, the profound writing of Vladimir Nabokov, and his love of music by everyone from Franz Schubert to Taylor Swift. Every week it is as if we are diving into living waters that renew and refresh the soul. This is particularly true of step 26 on Discernment and St. John's summary towards its conclusion. So often as is true with the Fathers, St. John makes use of concrete and colorful imagery to capture for us the nature of the spiritual life and in this case discernment.  What one gathers in so many of the teachings is that Faith involves seeing; a pulling back of the veil that allows us to see with perfect clarity the love and the mercy of God. St. John describes the many things that hobble us in that regard: Avarice, pride, attachment to our appetites and desire for the things of this world. It also describes the things that sharpen that vision and open us up to receive the gift of faith. Our pursuit of the virtues, and of the truth in our life lays the foundation to receive the greater gift of eternal Truth. This kind of seeing is not passive but rather involves the whole self. The deepest part of ourselves, the Nous, must be purified by Grace and asceticism so no impediment prevents us from moving toward God. I am constantly anxious about the future. What about you? This is a state of being that is entirely natural and is a gift human beings have been given to contemplate what's coming tomorrow and plan accordingly. It's also torture. Never is our mind 100 percent in the moment, focused on where we are and what we are doing. This was Luke Skywalker's problem in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back as he trained to be a Jedi with Yoda. And it had always been his problem, even when he was back home on Tatooine. His mind wanders anxiously, a stew of anxiety, worry, hope, and dreams for his life. In a new book by titled My Life With The Jedi, Clayton tells his story of walking through life with Star Wars and Ignatian spirituality. Even though the French paleontologist and theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin died in 1955, it feels like his work is still being discussed and debated in theological circles all the time. There are numerous associations and publications dedicated solely to exploring Teilhard's huge body of work. He made it back into the news this past fall when Pope Francis described him as “often misunderstood” during a Mass in Mongolia. Host Mike Jordan Laskey reached out to one of the foremost Teilhard experts in the United States, Sister Kathy Duffy, SSJ, to learn more about this fascinating Jesuits. Sr. Kathy is a Sister of St. Joseph of Philadelphia and the president of the of the American Teilhard Association. She's also Professor Emerita of Physics at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, where she directs the Institute for Religion and Science. She has written two books on Teilhard, including, most recently, “Teilhard's Struggle: Embracing the Work of Evolution” (Orbis).
