In the last few decades, plenty of Louisvillians have made their way through the ranks of Young Professionals Association of Louisville. But have you ever wondered how that organization got its start? As YPAL approaches its 25th anniversary, we sit down with its founders Cynthia Knapek, president of the Leadership Louisville Center; and Christy Ames, general counsel and EVP at Republic Bank & Trust Co.The two tell us how they were each looking for ways to connect with other professionals and with the leadership in the city at the time. They wanted to build something that lasted too — though they each admit they weren't thinking 25 years into the future back when they founded the organization.Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. 164: Is social media oversaturated? 2024 Online Marketing Trends Question & Answer

This is one of my favorite things to do ever: take YOUR burning questions and answer them live.    Just last month in April of 2024, I had the privilege of speaking to a group of approximately 150 people at the Young Professionals Association of Dubuque, Iowa. They had me in to talk about marketing and how to get seen by more people, particularly through your digital marketing strategies.   When I went to  this function, I love to share what I know and came prepared with slides, supportive resources, and a 45-minute planned speech. But, as with many programs I've been to before, I felt like the biggest takeaways came from the Q&A portion of the event. When we have an opportunity to ask burning questions from the audience in order to get the perspective of the speaker, it engages the participants and allows for real-time learning and application.   This episode is the result of all those fantastic questions the YP attendees submitted.   Read below for a preview of some of the topics we cover (and my answers) and a few helpful links for more information!   2:37 Question 1: Where did you get your blazer? Answer 1: Old Navy   3:27 Question 2: How do you encourage a client to utilize all parts of the flywheel in their marketing when a decent amount of local businesses have small budgets? Answer 2: So this is a fantastic question. If you want to know what the heck is a flywheel, go over to my episode from the beginning of May, the very first episode, episode 162. That one's going to be all about the marketing flywheel, and how I encourage my audience or sorry, how I encourage my clients to develop a more holistic marketing strategy.   Short story: I would remind you that good marketing doesn't mean you have to pay more for it.  It just means that you are doing things in a way that your audience recognizes and appreciates, and you are meeting them where they are.   For example, in the attraction phase of your marketing, I really do recommend that you're doing things in your strategy that are getting new eyeballs on you. This could mean collaborations. For example, I bring guests onto my podcast. It doesn't cost them any money to come be a guest with me, but it's opening them up to a whole new audience.  If they go and do two podcast guest spots a month, then they're open to two new audiences each month. They're attracting a lot more people in.   It's not costing them money. It's just costing them time. And that's helping them really get clear on where their time and energy and efforts are spent for that attraction phase of their marketing.    12:21 Question 3: Have you ever worked on a hiring campaign for a client? And if you have, what was successful and what was not so successful?   24:19 Question 4: Should a business still be using Twitter/X?   27:27 Question 5: What are your thoughts on Pinterest? Tap here to listen to a recent episode on this very topic!   34:31 Question 6: Besides social media, where else should you market in person events?   40:58 Question 7: Platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn have become flooded with entrepreneurs and businesses competing for the attention of their audience. They've essentially become red oceans (tap here for more info on the blue ocean vs. red ocean analogy). Has the shift away from traditional marketing actually created a large opportunity for some savvy people to leverage it? Local Business Branding“Stop working in your business and start working on your business!” When it comes to Branding your business, you need to get out of your business and into your local community. You need to build your brand around you with a logo and tagline. Just try it for 1 year and you will reap great rewards.1. Business to Business Networking GroupsBNI is the world's largest networking group, and one I highly recommend.  BNI operates on the philosophy of “giver's gain,” in which the more referrals you give to fellow members, the more referrals will be given back to you.Trustegrity - The foundation of success includes powerful relationships built on trust between people and organizations working together to solve challenges and pursue opportunities.  At Trustegrity, that's what we do.  We carefully select like-minded professionals to be part of local groups to form relationships that matter, not just to refer opportunities, but more importantly to create real friendships that transcend a commercial transaction.2. Mastermind GroupsMastermind groups bring people together for a shared goal, or shared set of goals, such as better business.  Mastermind groups allow you to tap into other perspectives, get support to achieve your goals, and create a level of accountability for taking action to do so.3. Chamber of CommerceOK, so almost everyone joins their local Chamber; but how active are you in it?Do you attend meetings, volunteer for committees, or otherwise play a role as an active member of the group? If not, you're undoubtedly missing local opportunities and connections that can propel your business.4. Non-profit OrganizationsThis one is the most important thing you should be doing. Find a non-profit that you are passionate about. You should donate your money but mostly your time to this organization. Just start out as a volunteer. You don't have to spend a lot of time volunteering, but it needs to be at least once a month.5. Local High School Sports ProgramsFind a local high school sports team to support. Once again, donate your time and money to this team. It doesn't take up much time and normally not a lot of effort.6. Civic OrganizationRotaryKiwanisLions Club7. Trade OrganizationsBe on the lookout for local trade, merchant, and industry-specific associations you can join.My area has a Young Professionals Association in which we meet monthly to listen to a business speaker.  That's all good, but the true value of membership is realized over beers after the presentation, when we get to meet, discuss, network, and grow.8. Local Trade ShowsBuy a booth at on of your local trade shows and get your business in front of people in your community. Have some giveaways or an entry to win a prize. If you have a service business be sure to set appointments at the show. At the show, try to talk to everyone that passes your booth. It is your responsibility to start the engagement with your potential customers. I am inviting you to check out my resources page. It is completely FREE and has a ton information and some downloads. You can find it at resources.xpansioncode.com.I will be releasing new episodes every Tuesday and Thursday!

Helping military families, HIV, addiction, and more! Jennifer tells us what has made her stay with Volunteers of America for over a decade! If you, or someone you know, has an addiction, you can seek help directly with Volunteers of America. She also shares the story of a young man who grew up in a Volunteers of America homeless shelter and went on to become extremely successful. Volunteers of America specifically makes it a point to add millennials to their Board of Directors, and even added it to their strategic plan. If you feel like you can't make a financial gift right now, never forget the impact your time and talent can have on a nonprofit. Ann Marie Kelly, Executive Director of the Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL), gives us her best networking tips and tricks: Ever gone to a networking event and not known what to say? Ann Marie gives teaches us awesome networking tips and tricks so you can make great connections. ***Special discount for listeners*** When you sign up for YPAL use promo code "drunkenmoney" for $10 off! Networking Tips and Tricks: Ann Marie discusses her path from Bellarmine University to the Archdiocese of Louisville and then to the Young Professionals Association of Louisville (YPAL). Not surprisingly, she found her job in YPAL because of her network. In fact, she has never just applied for a job, she has always found a job because of her connections. "It's not about what you know, it's who you know." She discusses how to conquer the fear of going to a networking event and how it's helpful to bring a friend if you don't want to go. Her favorite tricks on how to get out of an uncomfortable situation by expanding the group. Why you should go to networking events even if you're not looking for business connections. Ann Marie knows married couples who met at networking events and there is always the long-term potential benefit when you meet new people. In YPAL specifically, most of the greatest benefits will occur in 5-10 years after you first make the connection. Most YPAL attendees are between the ages of 25-35. The importance of attending networking events if you have just moved to a new city. The biggest mistake Ann Marie has seen at a networking event and the importance of making a real connection. Don't just hand out your business cards and walk away! Remember, networking events are to meet new people and make connections, not to sell yourself. Also, make sure you always follow up if somebody gives you their business card. It's amazing how few people actually follow up (check out How to Network Like a Boss). Ann Marie's craziest networking story involves Jordan Clemons (sorry Mayan Cafe). Don't know how to break the ice? Skip "What do you do?" and ask "Why are you here?" or "What are your hobbies?" Remember, don't just go in to sell, focus on making a real connection. Paul's go to is "What's your dream job?" Attend the event with the goal of trying to benefit two or more people. Have a mutual connection that might help another person? Make the introduction. Thinking of starting a business? The most important asset you can have is a strong network. Ann Marie's top 3 networking tips and tricks: Be brave and go by yourself to force yourself to meet new people. If you must go with somebody else, make sure you split up and don't talk to each other the entire time. Be in it to help someone else. Don't just go to sell yourself. Always follow up. Last call questions and answers: Best career advice: Don't be afraid to ask for help. "The worst thing they can do is say no." What advice would your 60-year-old self give you today? Take chances.
