A CEO's perspective on Louisville's economy

We get some perspective from a Louisville CEO on this week's Access Louisville podcast.Logan Pichel, president and CEO of Republic Bank & Trust, is on this week's show. (He also recently made our Power 50 list of the area's most powerful executives.) We cover a little bit of everything including diversity, equity and inclusion, mergers in the banking industry and banking under the new administration of Donald Trump. In a period where stories out of Washington D.C. seems to be lighting up news feeds on an hourly basis, Pichel discussed the need to focus on his company's mission."You don't run the bank for the administration, you run it for the longterm franchise value of the organization," he said. "Administrations change. Not a lot has changed in our strategy." He suspects a looser regulatory environment will likely be in place as a result of the new administration. He could also see more consolidation in the sector — "although I will tell you that we just bought a bank two years ago under the previous administration." Pichel was referring to Republic Bancorp's (NASDAQ: RBCAA) acquisition of CBank for approximately $51 million in cash in 2023. "It got approved quickly and it was a great experience," he said. We also get into talking about Louisville's economy — which has taken some hits of late particularly with the news that KFC U.S. is leaving Louisville for Plano, Texas. The news of Humana Inc.'s move out of its namesake tower on Main Street hasn't bolstered confidence either."It is worrisome. You don't want to see exits. You want to see entrance into the community — especially with companies with such great reputations as KFC and Humana. We moved associates downtown in the last year or two.""I also believe in momentum. Once you start to see more companies coming to Louisville, more people will come here. It's a great community," he said, noting he just moved here 4 and half years ago. Housing is not as expensive here as it is in other places and travel is easy."I just think we need momentum. We've got good leadership. Our mayor is fantastic. Craig Greenberg's great. And he's pro business. And he wants to bring new companies in. We just have to start getting some momentum," he said."I know we'll get there. I'm encouraged we'll get there. We all just wish it was a little faster."Access Louisville is a weekly podcast from Louisville Business First. Guy Adami, Elizabeth Thomas of SoFi, and Dan Nathan dive into the latest market trends, football updates, and notable financial happenings in Monday's edition of the On The Tape podcast. The episode starts with a light-hearted discussion about the Green Bay Packers' performance before shifting focus to the market's current state, with the S&P 500 nearing all-time highs. The hosts analyze historical interest rate trends, sector performances, and the impact of the Federal Reserve's actions. They delve into rising tech stocks, particularly AI-driven companies, and discuss the potential consequences of a long-duration bull market. The episode also highlights important corporate earnings from companies like Microsoft, Micron, and Costco, and their implications for the broader market. Duffy reflects on his journey from a humble start at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange in 1980 to leading CME Group, a company now valued at $78 billion. On today's show we are talking about one of our banks being forcibly closed and sold to another bank in Philadelphia in an FDIC auction this past week. The bank is known as Republic Bank and is legally named republic first bank, not be confused with the very similar sounding and much larger bank called First Republic which failed last year. Republic Bank was a local Philadelphia bank with about 20 branches in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. It relatively new having been founded in 1988. In 2008 the bank switched from being a purely commercial bank to include retail banking.  Our experience with Republic bank was a good one. They wrote construction and permanent loans on several of our buildings in Philadelphia.  --------- Host: Victor Menasce email: podcast@victorjm.com

IT'S UP TO THE STATES NOW, WHERE EVERYBODY WANTS IT, AND WHERE IT ALWAYS SHOULD HAVE BEEN! Geopolitical/Police State Federal Judge Finds Pennsylvania Law Barring 18-20 Year-Olds from Concealed Carry Unconstitutional U.S. District Court judge William S. Stickman decided this week against Pennsylvania's prohibition on 18-20- year-olds securing a concealed carry permit in order to be armed on their persons for self-defense. The lawsuit–Lara v. Evanchick–was brought by the Second Amendment Foundation, Firearms Policy Coalition, and three private citizens, including Madison M. Lara, after whom the case is named. Section 6109(b) of Pennsylvania's concealed carry law states that persons 21 and older may apply for a carry license. Plaintiffs' attorneys noted that Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Robert Evanchick's “active enforcement” of Section 6109(b) for permit issuance means law-abiding 18 to 20-year-olds are unable to carry for self-defense.   Now 18-20-year-olds in Pennsylvania may apply for License to Carry Firearms and the state's draconian transportation laws have been enjoined from enforcement.  Don't miss this fascinating conversation w/RC Williams of SherlocExposes.com ! Elites in the federal government hate cash because they hate Americans who love freedom. Cash provides privacy, an easy way for individuals to settle debts or sell goods without big govt intrusion; cash can't be taxed or tracked, preventing Uncle Sam from getting involved in petty transactions. On the other hand, CBDCs allow big govt to track and control every penny you earn, save and spend. They're also a powerful tool for politicians to take and redistribute your hard earned paycheck as they see fit. CBDCs allow centralized govt controlled banks to impose negative interest rates where you essentially pay the bank for holding your money! Not to mention, CBDCs have an expiration date and enable ESG scores to be imposed on you if you don't bow down to Uncle Sam. Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news the value of bank stocks are being marked down sharply today, globally.First up today, the drama over the failure of some American banks has all the spotlight. Globally, government bond yields fell sharply as investors pared bets of higher interest rates and looked for safety. The US 10-year Treasury yield fell to a five-week low of 3.5% and the 2-year yield lost nearly -50 bps to 4.05%, marking the largest three-day slump since 1987. In Germany, their benchmark 10-year yield fell nearly -30 bps to 2.17% and the UK Gilt was down to 3.27%.Regulators are huddling again today, with the US Fed in an unscheduled meeting. Rumours are swirling about other regional US banks, including Republic Bank, a bank based in Kentucky. Their shares are among the hardest hit today. But apart from some localised pressure points, markets are generally calm. The US President is out emphasising the overall regulator responses underway to keep it that way.In the UK, HSBC took over the local unit of SVB for UK£1. It now has to bolster its liquidity by UK£2 bln to absorb those assets. The main fallout so far has been the building expectation that the US Fed will pare back its rate hike program designed to restrain inflation. Financial system stability has suddenly trumped inflation fighting. In economic data news, American consumer inflation expectations for the year ahead fell sharply to 4.2% in February, the lowest in twenty one months. In the prior two months this expectation was 5%. Aiding the steady retreat has been both food and energy costs. Expectations for inflation three years ahead are anchored well below 3%. The same survey shows that consumers expect their labour markets to "improve".Elsewhere, Indian consumer prices rose at a 6.4% rate in the year to February, little-changed from January. But the rate between January and February was only at a +2% annualised rate, so there are expectations inflation pressures will ease there in coming months. The UST 10yr yield starts today at 3.53% and down -17 bps from this time yesterday. (Recall, its recent peak was 4.08% on March 3, 2023.) In our region, the devaluation of bank stocks has been sharp, a trend that started about six weeks ago. Over that period, ANZ, Westpac and NAB have all seen their share values fall -10%. CBA has seen a larger -14% fall. The current stresses took between -1% and -2% of that out yesterday alone (although CBA was only down -0.4% yesterday). The price of gold will open today at US$1911 and up +US$43 from this time yesterday. It was last at this level in early February. And oil prices start today down -US$1.50 at just over US$75/bbl in the US. The international Brent price is still just under US$81/bbl.The Kiwi dollar is firmer, now at 62.3 USc and a full +1c higher than this time yesterday. Against the Aussie we are up slightly at 93.4 AUc and a new high for the year. Against the euro we are firm too at 58 euro cents. That puts the TWI-5 at 70.6 and up +50 bps.The bitcoin price has raced higher today and is now at US$23,987 and up a remarkable +16.3% from this time yesterday. And volatility over the past 24 hours has been extreme at +/-9.6%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. And get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. I'm David Chaston and we'll do this again tomorrow.
