When you think of the entrepreneurial hustle, filmmakers are not the first to come to mind. But they are a really good example of the mindset and drive that are required of a 7-Figure Small startup. The broader world of business is moving more toward the Hollywood model of work: forming teams of talent based on what needs to be done, not the illusion of permanent employment. Studios and indie filmmakers have been operating this way since … always.Zeke Zelker is not only an entrepreneurial filmmaker, he’s also a creative pioneer at the forefront of transmedia. Not sure what that means? You’re definitely going to want to tune in, because it’s fascinating stuff.Plus, Zeke has a 4-phase approach to the way he gets his projects done. Through our conversation, I relate how Zeke’s framework for film projects is applicable to just about anyone who utilizes audience, indie talent, and technology to create a big impact from a tiny business. To access the show notes, transcript, and links mentioned in this episode, view the episode page at: http://unemployable.com/podcast/zeke-zelker***Unemployable is brought to you by iThemes Hosting for WordPress. iThemes is our host here at Unemployable.com, and it keeps the site fast and reliable — while not breaking the bank. “On Sept. 20, 1982, three men climbed a billboard along Route 22 in Whitehall Township, Lehigh Valley, to begin a radio promotional contest that ultimately lasted a staggering 261 days. The prize? An $18,000 mobile home for the person who could stay there the longest.” – Philly.com We bring in one of those men, Dalton Young, to the podcast. Dalton talks about his experiences, including an undercover sting. We learn about what made that billboard sway as well as what’s happened since Dalton left that billboard as a 23-year-old many years ago. Hear about phone calls from France and reporters from Rolling Stone. The contest also inspired Billboard Movie, directed by one of our former guests and friends, Zeke Zelker. This week we talked to award winning filmmaker and Transmedia storyteller Zeke Zelker about his newest film Billboard and his tactics for marketing and screenings to make money on his films. Zeke is a bottomless pit of energy and we had an absolute blast talking with him and we learned a lot. Hopefully you will too!
Zeke Zelker has been striving to build a filmmaking career for over twenty years far outside the filmmaking epicenters of Los Angeles and New York, staying true to his commitment of making films in his hometown of Allentown, PA. It's been a challenge, but that hasn't stopped him from creating films that have been seen around the globe while breaking down barriers of distribution. This struggle has inspired him to think differently about his approach to his craft. I had Zeke on the show to discuss his latest film BILLBOARD. Here's the summary from IMDB: Times are tough, listener-ship is down and Casey needs to come up with a plan to save his radio station, WTYT 960, and fast! Casey's grand plan is to host a billboard sitting contest, where four lucky contestants have the opportunity to win "nine-sixty thousand dollars and a mobile home". All they have to do is be the last person to survive, living on a billboard. BILLBOARD is currently available on VOD, for more information go to https://billboardmovie.com/.

In BILLBOARD Casey Lindeweiler (John Robinson) inherits WTYT 960 from his legendary radioman father only to discover that it’s on the brink of financial collapse. To right the sinking ship, Casey pulls out the oldest trick in radio, the wacky contest. His grand plan is to host a billboard sitting contest where four people will live on a catwalk in front of a billboard for the chance of winning a mobile home and “nine-sixty thousand” dollars. Unprepared for the spotlight, Casey rises to the challenge of running a business but is faced with relentless attacks from his competition (Eric Roberts), the local authorities, the media, and mother nature herself. Casey struggles to keep his father’s legacy alive while fighting to stay independent. BILLBOARD is inspired by an actual billboard-sitting contest Zelker recalls from his youth. BILLBOARD, which stars: John Robinson (Elephant, Lords of Dogtown,), Heather Matarazzo (Welcome to the Dollhouse, The Princess Diaries), Eric Roberts (The Dark Knight, Grey’s Anatomy), Leo Fitzpatrick (Kids, Bully), Darlene Cates (What’s Eating Gilbert Grapes, Picket Fences), and Oakes Fegley (Pete’s Dragon, This is Where I Leave You). A long-time pioneer in what has been called “transmedia” entertainment, Zelker is committed to changing the face of film. The “Billboard cine•experience,” tells variations of its story in different ways per medium, which is something unique and not yet fully embraced by the mainstream movie industry. Zelker explores multiple sides of the narrative and is unafraid to push traditional boundary lines between truth and fiction; all while enabling audiences to become a part of the story. The innovative filmmaker Zeke Zelker joins us to talk about his approach to creating an entire cinematic eco-system and why it is so important for filmmakers to seek out new ways of engaging an audience. The way we typically consume stories is how they are told — starting from the beginning to the finale. But it's important to realize that not all stories are linear. Therefore, on this week's show, we're exploring a non-linear approach to telling stories using a variety of media channels to scale the same story. But the concern is if we tell the same story from a non-linear approach framed with different perspectives and media, will it be as effective? We'll get the answer straight from the man who pioneered transmedia storytelling, otherwise known as "Cine Experiences", Zeke Zelker. Zeke Zelker is an award-winning filmmaker who produced the first transmedia project, Pandemic, at the Sundance Film Festival. His current project, Billboard, goes beyond any movie experience as it is aired in a multitude of ways via different platforms. “Learn how to succeed by learning as you go.” —Zeke Zelker Billboard is first featured in social media, then segues to live events and eventually evolves into a web series. Finally, it turns into a feature film, then a game, while different brands get to ride along the myriad events and utilize these platforms to showcase their own brand stories. In this week’s episode, Zeke will share how his childhood experiences growing up in an amusement park shaped his unique perspective for transmedia storytelling. Through this approach, you can also co-create and tell a story creatively that’s completely different from how other brands are doing it. “Take your ego out and listen to your audience. Test things, break things, make things.” —Zeke Zelker As he relives the three major lessons he learned growing up in a Pennsylvania amusement park, Zeke shares his four phases of creation, which you can use as a guide to create your own brand stories through transmedia storytelling. Zeke Zelker a critically acclaimed and award-winning filmmaker has a different approach to his craft which he calls cine•experiences; stories told across multiple platforms and through live events. His projects just don’t simply entertain, they engage audiences to become a part of the story. Zeke produced the first transmedia project at the Sundance Film Festival, Pandemic and most recently produced part of David Cronenberg’s Body Mind Change which is touring various museums around the world. Zeke’s latest project Billboard transcends the “normal” movie going experience by creating entertainment that can be consumed on a myriad of portals and in a number of ways. The story segues from social media to live events to a web series, to a feature film then a game, while offering companies a plethora of branding opportunities which will help fight food insecurity issues. Zeke experiments with the distribution of his projects blending the traditional with the unconventional. His last feature film InSearchOfwas one of the first to embrace streaming platforms such as Hulu ultimately being in the top 10 dramas viewed on the portal for over seven years. InSearchOf was also the first virtually screened movie, showing on Second Life aside from its theatrical, DVD, PPV/VOD release. Films Zeke has produced; Loggerheads, Southern Belles, and Just Like the Son have screened at major film festivals around the world. His first exposure to the film industry was as a dancer in John Water’s Hairspray. The son of a preacher woman, Zeke broke into the entertainment business as a clown, peddling balloons at an amusement park that his great grandfather founded. I am a very passionate person and the idea of taking a breath and kind of like taking a step back has made me not do things that I necessarily would regret. Thoughts on Breathing I have sleep apnea where I stop breathing in the middle of the night and so I gasp for air and wake myself up. So breathing is a very big part of my life. Obviously we wouldn't be alive without it, but I will literally take a moment every once in a while throughout the day to to literally deep breathe in and slow breathe out. I have taken yoga on occasion as well and that actually helped me with breathing. It's just a matter of taking the time to be able to do it. Sometimes I get too wound up and I don't do it and then I suffer the consequences. Suggested Resources Book: The Art of Happiness: The Art of Living by The Dalai Lama App: n/a Bullying Story Growing up, we did not have economic means and so we couldn't afford the greatest trends and everything else and being the person that I am, I decided that I was going to do all the shopping at thrift stores. Then I became basically a hardcore punker, you know, with mohawks and everything else. I was never ultra aggressive. But the interesting about it was, I definitely looked different from everybody else intentionally. Was I ever bullied? No, but the interesting thing about it was, I was also a big kid. I stopped growing in seventh grade, so I was, you know, just a monster. But I would always protect other people that got picked on. I got into more fights by protecting people than ever myself. It's interesting just because quite honestly, even in today's political climate, I just had no tolerance for it. I really don't. In the Marine Corps we didn't have much of it and anything along those lines, but I just can't stand the idea of bullying. It's someone's own insecurity trying to push their insecurities onto somebody else. And so I just don't have time for it. And I literally will protect other people for it as well. And the scars on my face prove it. Free Gift Get the brand new Awaken With Focus 12-Minute Guided Meditation by Bruce LangfordBe alert and focused after waking. Feel invigorated, fresh and dynamic.
