What happens when machinima stops telling a story… and instead pulls you inside a fractured mind?In this episode of And Now For Something Completely Machinima, hosts Phil Rice, Tracy Harwood, and Damien Valentine dive deep into “Dysfunction” by Iono Allen—a powerful, unsettling machinima film created in Second Life. This isn't your typical machinima. There's no clear beginning, middle, or end—just a visceral, abstract experience of psychological breakdown, sensory overload, and emotional fragmentation. Is it about mental health? Substance abuse? Political disillusionment? Or something even darker?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down for an in-depth conversation with one of the most iconic figures of the 1990s, multi-platinum recording artist Rob Van Winkle, better known as Vanilla Ice. After being raised in the Dallas, Texas area, Rob found his way into the drastically different worlds of motocross racing and breakdancing. These uncommon interests helped fuel a competitive nature in his teenage years, and he would soon pivot to an interest in poetry and hip hop. Rob explains that he developed performing skills at a local mall where he'd breakdance and freestyle rap for shoppers and onlookers. His dancing abilities and daredevil nature would eventually land him on stage at a local hip hop nightclub in Dallas called City Lights, where he won over the club's management and audiences alike. Rob would sign on with a manager and record label and record his iconic song “Ice Ice Baby”, which he had originally penned at age 16. By age 20, he had sold six million records and had the best-selling hip hop recording at that time. But international stardom had its price, and Rob fell into the clutches of drug abuse and was taken advantage of by several professionals around him, including his old record label. Rob would step away from the music industry for some time and thrust himself into the world of real estate, where he discovered a love for home renovation. This passion would eventually morph into the long-running television show “The Vanilla Ice Project”, which he reveals was just recently picked up by HBO. Dale and Rob's conversation covers his redemption arc, his wild car collection, which includes a 1970s Dale Earnhardt Sr. dirt car, and how the rewards of fatherhood outweigh the riches of fame. Scripted Reality: The Elite's Predictive Playbook – From National Treasure to NSA Avatars! Today we're going full conspiracy time — a marathon, no-holds-barred, single-host deep dive because the rabbit hole doesn't have a speed limit. We're talking how so-called “fiction” movies, TV series, and even video games keep morphing into cold, hard reality. National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Black Mirror, V for Vendetta, Idiocracy — these aren't just popcorn flicks. They're blueprints. And we're pulling the receipts: DoD and CIA script-doctoring Hollywood, the WWII origins of the whole propaganda pipeline, America's Army as straight-up military recruiting propaganda, and the Snowden bombshells proving the NSA and CIA were straight-up spying inside World of Warcraft and Second Life like it was their personal panopticon.

Welcome to Season 6, Episode 21! Erin Entrada Kelly is a multiple award-winning Filipino American author best known for her emotionally honest and deeply relatable novels for middle grade and young adult readers. Born in Louisiana to a Filipino mother, Kelly often draws from her own experiences growing up between cultures. She uses humor, vulnerability, and empathy to explore what it means to search for identity and belonging. Before becoming a full-time author, she worked as a journalist and magazine editor, experiences that helped shape her sharp dialogue and realistic characters. The Second Life of Snap is a middle grade science fiction novel that was released on May 12, 2026, from Greenwillow Books. The story follows twelve-year-old Zuzu Santos, who lives with her friends in a struggling, drought-ridden community controlled by a powerful corporation in a near-future world shaped by climate change. After Zuzu's father loses his job, the family receives an outdated guardian robot named Snap instead of proper severance support. Although Zuzu is initially suspicious of robots, she slowly forms a deep bond with Snap as his battery life begins to run out. The novel blends themes of friendship, survival, inequality, climate anxiety, and humanity's relationship with technology, while still maintaining the warmth and emotional depth Kelly is known for. Erin is a New York Times bestselling author and has been honored by industry experts, her peers, and the readers multiple times, including the 2025 Newbery Medal for The First State of Being, 2018 Newbery Medal for Hello, Universe, a 2021 Newbery Honor for We Dream of Space, the 2023 NAIBA Book of the Year Award for Those Kids From Fawn Creek, and the 2017 APALA Award for The Land of Forgotten Girls, among many other honors. In our conversation, Erin shares a little about her journey to becoming an award-winning author, how winning multiple awards impacts her mindset, her background in Louisiana and how it shapes her work, what she hopes readers discuss and consider when it comes to technology, the considerations when writing about serious topics, and so much more.  To learn more about Erin, you can visit her website erinentradakelly.com, follow her on instagram @erinentrada, and of course purchase The Second Life of Snap or any of her other work.  If you like what we do, please share, follow, and like us in your podcast directory of choice or on Instagram @AAHistory101. Black soldier fly, cricket, and mealworm farming aren't science fiction. They're converting food waste into high-quality livestock feed, fertilizer, and protein at scale. Research is even showing promise in using these insects to remove plastics, antibiotics, and heavy metals from our environment. For professionals in cyber-physical risk, OT security, and food and agriculture cybersecurity, pay attention. Insect agriculture facilities are automated, sensor-dependent production environments with real operational technology vulnerabilities, and this industry is scaling fast with limited security frameworks in place (aka a factory) This is the circular bioeconomy in action. Season 2 of Geekstorians continues with the moment virtual worlds stopped being just games and started becoming laboratories. In ‘Virtual Worlds, Real Consequences', Dave looks at three very different digital worlds — World of Warcraft, EVE Online and Second Life — and the very real human behaviour they exposed once thousands of people were let loose inside them.It starts with World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood incident, when a raid debuff escaped into the wider game and created a plague across major cities. What looked like a game bug became something stranger: an accidental model of how people behave during an epidemic, later cited in real-world pandemic research. From there, the episode moves into EVE Online, where CCP built a universe with minimal intervention and players responded by creating their own politics, economies, infiltrations, betrayals and wars. This is the world of the Guiding Hand Social Club heist, the Band of Brothers collapse, the Council of Stellar Management, and the Bloodbath of B-R5RB, a battle so vast it was covered like a real military event. Then comes Second Life, the platform that looked, for a while, like the future of the internet. A world built around ownership, virtual land, and real-money exchange, it drew in businesses, media companies and futurists who thought the metaverse had arrived. What followed was less a clean technological revolution than a reminder that the internet always brings people with it, and people tend to arrive carrying chaos. If the earlier episodes in Season 2 were about collapse, bankruptcy and institutional failure, this one is about something more revealing: what happens when designers build systems, step back, and let human beings do the rest.Geekstorians is a documentary-style podcast from Dave Elliott of Geektown, exploring the hidden history of geek culture, fandom, film, television, comics and gaming.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/geektown. Season 27 @TalkArt continues with TRACEY EMIN. Hosted by @RobertDiament. An exclusive new interview recorded in Margate within Crossing Into Darkness, a group exhibition curated by Dame Tracey Emin including works by 21 international artists.Crossing Into Darkness brings together a group of artists whose works confront the darkness inherent in human experience, not as something to be feared but as a necessary threshold toward renewal. In times marked by upheaval and uncertainty, this journey feels both universal and deeply personal.Featuring works by David Altmejd, Georg Baselitz, Louise Bourgeois, Marlene Dumas, Tracey Emin, Laura Footes, Antony Gormley, Francisco Goya, Gilbert & George, Celia Hempton, Anselm Kiefer, Joline Kwakkenbos, Mark Manders, Danielle Mckinney, Lindsey Mendick, Juanita McNeely, Edvard Munch, Hermann Nitsch, Janice Nowinski, Anna Pakosz and Johnnie Shand Kydd. The title of the show is very self explanatory, especially for the times we are living in. But even so we have always had our own journeys. And I feel that we have to cross into darkness to find light. I'd like this show to be very emotionally immersive and people to feel the strength and vibrations within the works. I want people to know that art isn't just something that you look at. That it has a deeper purpose and can penetrate all souls. I love the idea of people coming to Margate on the greyest of winter days with gale force winds and crashing waves to make the pilgrimage to see the show.– Dame Tracey EminFollow @TraceyEminStudioSpecial thanks to @CarlFreedmanGalleryThis powerful group show runs until Sunday 12th April at Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate. Free entry, no booking required.Tracey Emin's major solo exhibition A Second Life runs until Sunday 31st August 2026 at Tate Modern, London. Tickets available from Tate. Hosted on Acast. Dame Tracey Emin burst onto the art scene in the 1990s and controversy has followed her ever since. Like in 1999, when her Turner Prize-nominated My Bed caused a media frenzy. Emin's raw, autobiographical and confessional work is very personal yet also platforms the wider female experience through its themes of abuse, sexuality, poverty, and reproductive rights.  Jen chats to Jess Baxter, assistant curator of major new exhibition Tracey Emin: A Second Life at the Tate Modern, about the artist, her work, and the expression of the female experience. What does a former entrepreneur feel while recovering the bodies of fallen soldiers every day? What is life truly like under Russian occupation? Part of the "Ukrainian Voices" series, the book was published in English by Ibidem-Verlag and is available on Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Dark-Days-Determined-People-Ukrainian/dp/3838219589 The book brings together 20 reportage stories documented between 2022 and 2024 across Ukraine. Originally published mostly by Euromaidan Press, these stories capture the lived experiences of Ukrainian soldiers, volunteers, artists, students, and children. *** Listen on various platforms: https://li.sten.to/explaining-ukraine UkraineWorld: https://ukraineworld.org/en *** SUPPORT: You can support our work on https://www.patreon.com/c/ukraineworld Your help is crucial, as we rely heavily on crowdfunding. Dame Tracey Emin is BACK on The GWA Podcast! Hailed for her paintings, videos, textiles, neons, writing, sculptures, installations, and now, her extraordinary work as an educator, raising the next generation of artists at TKE Studios in Margate, right by where we are recording today – Emin has been at the forefront of art for more than four decades. Born in Croydon, and raised in Margate with her twin brother Paul, Emin had a complex child- and teenagehood, which she details in her part-memoir, Strangeland – as well as in works such as Why I Never Became a Dancer or Mad Tracey From Margate. Officially leaving school aged 15, Emin went to Maidstone College of Art, and onto the Royal College – where she won over her interviewees with her impressive sketch book selection. In 1993, she kept a shop in Brick Lane, titled “The Shop”, which ended with a party on her 30th birthday, and that year had her first exhibition – at a then-new gallery called White Cube. On view were objects she had collected over the years – from teenage diaries to toys, paintings, drawings and unsent letters. She titled it My Major Retrospective, just in case she never had another show. However, this was just the start. Emin has since exhibited all over the world – most recently the Yale Center for British Art, where I saw her work a floor above JMW Turner, getting me to realise the painterly relationship between the two artists – despite working 250 years apart – from how Emin plays with moods akin to his stormy weathers, to how the bodies in her paintings evoke his mountainous landscapes, with vein-like rivers. As well as Palazzo Strozzi, highlighting Emin's relationship to the history and iconography in Italian art – such as life, death and the crucifixion, to the decay of the body and enlightenment through spiritual (and sexual) quests. It challenged the city's history, revealing the rawness of a woman's perspective in a culture that so rarely addressed it. Now, we meet in Margate on the occasion of the largest – and perhaps the most important – exhibition in her life so far, “A Second Life” opening at Tate Modern on 27 February, in the very city where her artistic life thrived. But it's also a show taking place after monumental personal shifts, such as her mother's passing in 2016, surviving cancer in 2020, the opening of her free studio-based art school in 2023, but also when the world couldn't be more excited for Emin. She has said of this show to be a “true celebration of living” and I can't wait to find out more…

This is the fourth and final episode of our series examining the 1860 Road Hill House murder, the case that gave birth to modern detective fiction. Previous episodes covered the murder of three-year-old Francis Saville Kent, Detective Inspector Jonathan Whicher's groundbreaking investigation, and the five years of cold case torment that preceded Constance Kent's confession. The gallery was packed to suffocation. July 21, 1865. Five years they'd waited for this moment. Five years since Francis Saville Kent was found with his throat cut in the family privy. Five years since Inspector Whicher accused Constance Kent of murdering her baby brother—and was destroyed for saying so. When the clerk asked how she pleaded, Constance spoke one word: "Guilty." No mitigation. No excuse. No insanity defense that might have saved her from prison. When Constance Kent stood in the prisoner's dock at Devizes Assizes on July 21, 1865, she refused the insanity defense her counsel had carefully prepared. Instead, she pleaded guilty to murdering her three-year-old half-brother Francis—a single word that silenced the packed courtroom and condemned her to death. But Queen Victoria's government commuted her sentence. At sixteen when she committed the murder, Constance had carried the secret for five years before confessing voluntarily. She served twenty years in Victorian prisons—first at Millbank, then Fulham Refuge—transforming from a troubled teenager into a model prisoner who educated herself and learned nursing skills. In 1886, a woman named Ruth Emilie Kaye boarded the ship Carisbrooke Castle bound for Sydney. Constance Kent ceased to exist. For fifty-eight years, she built a new life in Australia, rising to Matron at several institutions, nursing the sick and elderly, living in quiet anonymity until her death at one hundred years old in 1944. No one in Australia knew they were burying England's most notorious Victorian murderess.Key Case DetailsTrial and Sentencing (July 1865):Thirty-minute trial at Devizes AssizesJustice Willes presiding, John Duke Coleridge defendingGuilty plea rejected insanity defenseDeath sentence commuted to life imprisonmentPrison Years (1865-1885):Twenty years served at Millbank and Fulham prisonsModel prisoner with no disciplinary incidentsSelf-educated in nursing skillsRelease conditional on leaving EnglandAustralian Reinvention (1886-1944):Emigrated as Ruth Emilie Kaye aboard Carisbrooke CastleNursing career spanning four decadesMatron at Parramatta Industrial School for GirlsMatron at Pierce Memorial Nurses' Home for twenty-one yearsDied April 10, 1944, at age 100, identity unknownLiterary Legacy:Wilkie Collins's The Moonstone (1868) directly inspired by the caseSergeant Cuff character modeled on Inspector WhicherFoundation for Sherlock Holmes and entire detective fiction genreInspector Whicher died June 29, 1881—exactly twenty-one years after the murder nightFrancis Saville Kent was three years and ten months old when he died. He was not a plot device or a mystery to be solved.
