Today we're joined by Dan Knauss, a technical content generalist at SolidWP (formerly iThemes). The episode focuses on the importance of hardening WordPress websites for enhanced security. Dan discusses their approach to security, which includes targeted security measures rather than trying to cover every potential vulnerability. They emphasise the need for timely updates and advocate for working with a reliable host that provides hardware and software firewalls. Dan also addresses the limitations of traditional security plugins, referring to WordPress malware scanners as "fundamentally flawed" and proposing an external line of security through application firewalls. The conversation highlights the upcoming rebranding of iThemes to SolidWP and touches on their premium security product, Solid Security, which prioritises tried and tested features over added "bolt-ons".

Discussion rolls on within the WordPress community regarding the removal of active install growth data from the WordPress.org plugin repository - but still no firm resolution is in sight. As we reported last week, WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg said that adding some form of stats for plugin developers is “doable”. We'll have to wait and see where the discussion goes from here. Meanwhile, The WP Minute's Eric Karkovack wrote about what plugin developers should realistically expect from the WordPress project and its leadership. It might be that the project simply isn't there to help developers make money. Instead, their focus is likely trained on providing us with a platform to build upon. How a developer monetizes their product is ultimately up to them. And Alex Denning of Ellipsis argues that WordPress.org is an ineffective place to distribute plugins. He provides some key data to back up this point. On the other side of the coin, Liquid Web's Matt Cromwell respectfully disagrees. Rob shares the back story of why he chose WordPress to be the CMS (Content Management System) for all of the funeral home marketing websites and cremation arrangement websites that he and his team have created. He also gives a brief history of WordPress and how its features can help funeral homes create a powerful online marketing tool for their firms. Fact Check: Rob referred to the creator of WordPress, Matt Mullenweg as a billionaire but at the time of the recording, his net worth is estimated at $450 Million and he is from Houston, Texas, not Austin, Texas. See the complete transcript here: Rob Heppell: Welcome back to the Funeral X Podcast. I'm Robin Heppell and I'm joined with my Funeral Results Marketing business partner, Jake Johnson. Hey there, Jake. Jake Johnson: Hey Rob. Rob Heppell: Hey, that was a fun little walk down memory lane there about the beginnings of Funeral Results Marketing and where it kind of all started. A number of times we kept talking about WordPress and I think it's a good topic to just dive into a little bit more for folks who haven't heard of WordPress or what it is and how it can be used for funeral homes and cemeteries and cremation providers. Jake Johnson: Yep, I agree. I learned a lot, just things that I... There are things that we discussed that I had known in connection with our relationship and the things that you do, and then I learned a lot about the other things that filled in to make Funeral Results Marketing what it is. Yes, you're right. We talked about WordPress and I've got a little experience in WordPress but I'm pretty sure you've got a lot more. So I'd love to hear you dive into that more. I think it's a valuable topic for people here. Rob Heppell: Sure. Well, yes. Looking back at the last time we chatted, I had got into the funeral home websites early, like in '96 with McCalls. And then in the early 2000s, met up with Todd Abrams from Aldor Solutions in Texas. So I started to really get into how websites were getting developed and that tenure lasted to 2006. And then I took a bit of a break from website development and I reached out to a local marketer guy, his name's Tris Hussey. He was the one that introduced me to WordPress. I said that we had the three options, Joomla, Drupal and WordPress, and he nudged me towards WordPress, and thankfully he did. But it was more of the marketing platform compared to the other two content management systems. Rob Heppell: At that time, I realized that, hey, this is really search engine friendly and Google friendly right out of the box. I thought that it would be a great platform for funeral homes. But at that time, it was still just a blogging platform. It didn't look like a website. And right at that time, there was this little bit of movement of going from a blogging platform to a CMS, a content management system. And really there wasn't anything inside the software of WordPress. It was just how it was applied basically through the themes. I was working with a developer and he introduced me to a couple of theme developers, one guy named Cory Miller from iThemes and Brian Gardner from StudioPress and Genesis. Rob Heppell: These guys are quite well known in the theme development space. I was having conversations, direct conversations with them because I'd be kind of pushing the limits on them like, hey, can't we make it look like a website, can't we create a navigation bar, and working through these little things. So it was kind of neat to be working with these guys. They've gone on to create lots of high-performance WordPress themes, and we'll get into themes in a little bit. And as I mentioned before, my strategy is I don't want to have to learn it but I'd like to be able to connect the dots to funeral service. So if this is out there in the big world and other companies are using it, how does it apply to funeral service? Rob Heppell: What we did,

About this episode. So on the podcast today we have Cory Miller. Cory is likely well known to many of you, he's been a big part of the WordPress community for many years. He founded, grew and sold iThemes and is now the owner of Post Status, which is a community dedicated to informing WordPress professionals and enthusiasts about the industry. So the topic of the podcast today is the WordPress Mergers and Acquisitions Landscape, and it's the perfect subject for Cory. He's been on both sides of the equation having sold iThemes to Liquid Web in 2018 and then buying Post Status earlier in 2021. When we talk about Mergers and Acquisitions in WordPress, it really seems to polarise opinions. Companies are being bought and sold on an almost weekly basis at present. There are those who worry that we're at a point where larger companies have bought, and continue to buy up, smaller businesses. They see this as a cause for concern; a concern that we're in danger of straying into a future where a few big brands own ‘all-the-things'. On the other hand there are people who see this as a sign of the maturation of the WordPress ecosystem. It's a consequence of the success of the WordPress economy that smaller teams have a pathway to profitability, one in which the possibility of being acquired is an attractive option. There's a great deal to discuss here, some of it unexpected, and I'm sure that you'll have your own opinions. We try to tackle the subject by going through a list of the ‘good' and the ‘bad' of WordPress Mergers and Acquisitions. We don't attempt to cover every single angle, but we do try to look at it from both sides. It's great to get Cory's take on the topic.

Despite appearances on social media, we all feel low sometimes. Whether it's just a result of the occasional bad hair day or a sign of something deeper, handling those lows can sap your energy and leave you feeling seriously drained.  If you've ever found yourself in a dark place, you'll know that there's no ladder inside a Pit of Despair. In fact, at the time, clawing your way out can seem impossible. Maybe you've struggled with careers, finances, maintaining positive relationships, or just plain keeping your head above water. Whatever your personal mountains look like, one universal truth resounds: talking about the hard times can be CHALLENGING - almost as challenging as the hard times themselves. The good news is that you CAN make peace with the murky waters that threaten to swallow you up. All you need is a little inspiration, and my interview with Cory Miller is full of it.  As the founder of iThemes, the home of premium WordPress plugins, Cory is no stranger to Instagrammable moments, but his journey has been about much more than joyrides and bankrolls.  He credits his success to a unique idea, an effective pricing model, and starting again - without starting over. Naturally, that's only the surface of Cory's recipe, but it goes very nicely with a healthy dose of introspection and a new perspective on fear.  In this episode of Profit and Impact, Cory shares the intimate details of his battle with mental health, the value of a sturdy relationship with a counselor, and the turning points that came from taking ownership of his work, his happiness, and his desire to do right by others.  So what's this conversation REALLY about? The value of good advice The power that lies in a community of like-minded peopleHow to start again without starting overWhy you should take ownership of your work and protect your own happiness Why you should listen Cory is a great reminder that great things can happen, even when the world seems stacked against you. Need a little push to swap your warm bed for the embrace of the outside world? This interview will do the trick.  Links  www.corymiller.com  Digital Marketing Kitchen You can quote me on that...  “I think we've all had our fair share of luck in life, but the key is what we do with that luck.” - Cory Miller  Like what you hear?  Help me reach more ears by leaving a review (and a hefty handful of stars!) here.

I first heard of Brian Casel when he was doing Restaurant Engine. It was a SaaS type website builder for restaurants, built on WordPress multisite.  In this podcast we discuss how he built it, then had to pivot as he learned about his market. It turned out restaurant owners wanted someone to build everything for them, so that became an important part of onboarding customers.  Brian is famous for talking about "productized services," he even has a course called Productize. The idea for a productized service came from his experience onboarding customers for Restaurant Engine. He ended up selling it, along with another entity called Hotel Propeller, for low six figures.  He then created Audience Ops, another productized service. His latest endeavor has been learning how to code, and he's just putting the finishing touches on a new SaaS called ProcessKit. Brian sold a few companies, including a theme company in 2015, and more recently his Content Upgrades plugin to iThemes.  We talk about that and lots more, enjoy!
