"Every day is a new, exciting challenge. I am having a great time doing it, but it is a challenge." Anita Smith has been creating live theatre for nearly 30 years. She is the Executive and Artistic Director of the 25th Street Theatre Company and loves providing Saskatchewan artists the opportunity to tell their stories and showcase their skills. The company's latest production, however, is pushing Anita and her team to their limits. Behind Closed Doors takes people to six different sites across Saskatoon to explore unseen conversations and gives them a chance to experience in a performance in a unique venue specific to the story. Each play is 20 minutes, has limited capacity (we're talking 6-8 people per venue), and will no doubt make the impression on audience members. Anita and 25th Street Theatre is committed to supporting Saskatchewan playwrights and Behind Closed Doors is giving six playwrights the chance to share their voices with our community. I am a huge fan of Anita as an artist and a person, and any opportunity to talk with her on the podcast is one that I will take. She graciously took time in-between her many duties to speak with me on the University of Saskatchewan campus to tell listeners about Behind Closed Doors and why people will never forget watching a play in a bathroom! Hello and welcome to a special summer bonus episode of YXE Underground. I hope you are having a wonderful summer! One of the highlights of my summer is always enjoying the Saskatoon Fringe Festival. It is put on by Saskatoon's 25th Street Theatre and features artists not only from Saskatoon and Canada, but from around the world as well. The Fringe Festival attracts amazing live theatre productions to our community and brings people together in very unique ways that Philippa Williams explains in this episode of the podcast. Philippa Williams has been with 25th Street Theatre for years, and this year is one of the leaders who is ensuring the festival runs smoothly. I met with Philippa at the Fringe Festival site in W.E. Graham Park in the Broadway neighbourhood to learn more about this year's festival and discover why fringe performers continue to choose Saskatoon as a place to share their talents. Philippa also shares her passion for ensuring the Fringe continues to make a difference in our community. I think you will love our conversation and hopefully it sparks an interest in checking out this year's Saskatoon Fringe Festival!Click here to learn more about the shows being performed at this year's festival and to purchase tickets. The Fringe Festival runs from July 31st to August 9th, and I hope to see you at one of the shows!Don't forget that Season 8 of YXE Underground launches in September!Thank you for continuing to support a local, independent podcast here in Saskatoon.Cheers...Eric Host, Producer, Editor: Eric AndersonTheme Music: Andrew DicksonWebsite: https://www.yxeunderground.comRecorded: On Treaty 6 Territory and the traditional homeland of the Metis
Tess Hills is an amazing performer - both street performance/immersive theatre and puppeteer. I had the sheer honor of working with Tess on Brainland as puppeteers. She is the kind of person that elevates the whole quality of the project. Tess is fun to be on set with (we kept trying to hide stage clips on each other when the other one wasn't paying attention) and she also brings professional guidance to the project. I learned SO MUCH just by being around her. It was incredible. Tess owns and runs a company called Curious Cargo which has some fun shows for festivals and live events. They have a sketh/show called The Temperance Society described as, "Then never fear, the Victorians are here to help you mend your ways. They're frightfully proper, sombre and stern, with a terribly stiff upper lip." Truly an incredible performer. And one of those incredibly talented people who is also so so so humble. Her backbone is in play and always connecting. I loved doing this interview. Hope you enjoy it!
Prinnie Stevens is bringing The Lady Sings Soul to Canberra, performing at The Street Theatre on July 11th. The big question, will her whole family pack out The Street Theatre? Tickets to The Lady Sings Soul - thestreet.org.auSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She shares insights into her pieces like Stone on Road and the profound symbolism of resistance in Palestinian art. Kunafa and Shay is a podcast produced for HowlRound Theatre Commons by co-hosts Nabra Nelson and Marina Johnson. Kunafa and Shay discusses and analyzes contemporary and historical Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) and Southwest Asian and North African (SWANA) theatre from across the region. Kunafa and Shay highlights MENA/SWANA plays and theatremakers, spotlights community-engaged work in the region and diaspora, and analyzes the past, present, and future of MENA/SWANA theatre in the United States and beyond. Theatre artists and scholars Nabra Nelson and Marina Johnson bring their own perspectives, research, and special guests in order to start a dialogue and encourage further learning and discussion. The name, Kunafa and Shay, invites you into the discussion in the best way we know how: with complex and delicious sweets like kunafa, and perfectly warm tea (or, in Arabic, shay). Kunafa and Shay is a place to share experiences, discuss ideas, and sometimes engage with our differences. In each country in the region, you'll find kunafa made differently. In that way, we also lean into the diversity, complexity, and robust flavors of MENA/SWANA theatre.

Founded in 1736, the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, South Carolina, was the first building on the continent solely for theatrical performances before it likely burnt down in the Great Fire of 1740. The Calder House Hotel — later named the Planter's Hotel — was built at or near the theatre's original location in 1809. Many passed through the hotel, including: Robert Smalls, who worked at the hotel before escaping slavery and joining the Union navy during the Civil War, and Junius Brutus Booth, the father of John Wilkes Booth.According to legend, a woman named Nettie Dickerson also often stayed at the hotel. Proud, angry, and sure of herself, the legend of Nettie has lasted long after her alleged lifetime. Over eighty years after the former hotel was reopened as the Dock Street Theatre, Nettie is considered the building's most famous ghost. In this episode, we explore the many stories and paranormal experiences of the Dock Street Theatre. But first, Zoey is here with her Something Spooky: soulmates!Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2024/01/30/ep-147-the-dock-street-theatre-we-love-nettieVisit us on Social Media! Hello and welcome to a special summer bonus episode of YXE Underground. My name is Eric Anderson and I hope you are having a wonderful summer so far. I spent the first two weeks of July on a trip to Scandinavia with my Dad and had a really great time there. We spent time in Norway, specifically Oslo and a city called Narvik within the Arctic Circle, which was pretty crazy to experience as the sun just doesn't really go down at all. We would go to bed around 1 am and it was like 7pm here in Saskatoon, so that was pretty neat to see. The reason for our trip was to learn more about my Grandpa Anderson's experiences as a member of the Norwegian Resistance in WWII and we really learned a lot. I posted a little bit about it on the YXE Underground social media channels but I did some audio recording during our trip and fingers crossed I'm going to be doing a radio documentary for CBC Radio about our time in Norway and my Grandpa's experiences.I am also excited to be back in Saskatoon and to be talking about the Saskatoon Fringe Festival! It's one of my favourite times of the year here in the city. There's great live theatre to take in, there's wonderful local vendors to check out, the buskers are great and if you have kids well there's so much to do!The Saskatoon Fringe Festival is put on by Saskatoon's 25th Street Theatre. It starts on August 3rd and goes to August 12th. There's so much going on in the festival, including a return to Broadway Avenue on August 5th and 6th, that I felt it warranted a summer bonus episode with one of my favourite people in the world, Anita Smith. Anita is the Artistic and Executive Director for 25th Street Theatre and is basically thinking about the Fringe Festival 365 days a year. When I met up with her last week and asked if she was getting any sleep as the festival was getting closer, she told me she was actually dreaming of the Fringe Festival. That's how much Anita Smith cares about putting on a fantastic Fringe Festival for us here in Saskatoon! Now, before we get to our conversation, I quickly want to mention that Season 6 of YXE Underground will drop on September 14th and I am so excited for this upcoming season! I am going to try some new things this season with more episodes and more online promotion that I am eager for you to hear and see and I have some great new merchandise not only for people but for our four-legged friends as well! I'll share more details as we get closer to September but thank you so much for all of your support and spreading the word on all things YXE Underground.Have a wonderful time at the Fringe Festival and best of luck to Anita as she attempts to see all 18 plays during the festival! I started by asking Anita how she was feeling a few days before the festival kicks off.

In the gospel of Luke, we find a geographical structure. The book begins with John in the wilderness. It then portrays Jesus setting his face toward Jerusalem. Eventually he arrives there, and in his final week he goes into the heart of the city. Why is Jerusalem so central? Perhaps it symbolizes the center of political power and religious piety. Perhaps the image is of Jesus going into the belly of the religious/military/economic power of his day. What does he say in there? What does he do in there? In this series, we will look through a historical and political lens of Jesus' final days. What is portrayed and experienced is disruption, for both empire and the reader.
