Jeff Gomez is CEO of Starlight Runner and one of the world’s leading experts in story and narrative design. He works with executives, visionaries, and global leaders to develop vast fictional story universes on properties like Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, Transformers and Spider-Man This conversation is really an exploration of narrative design. In particular, Jeff describes how conceiving and developing stories as worlds that can be told across multiple platforms can unlock incredible value for creators and brands. We also discuss the movement of audiences to participants and how, as storytellers we can not only engage and learn from the audience as well as harness this incredible feedback in our work. This leads us to explore what Jeff refers to us the Collective Journey narrative modality which, he argues, is a more relevant way to think about story in today’s hyper connected world. We dig into what this means for film, for culture and how we are moving from Hollywood-centric storytelling to more global, diverse and inclusive narratives. www.futureoffilm.live

This week I chat with Doctor Cameron Cliff. He develops multi-platform experiences and uses storytelling to solve strategy problems.EPISODE NOTES: This is the fourth episode of the new season of Fictional Reality. This season I will be interviewing experience designers, puzzle developers, and escape room enthusiasts to find out how they design experiences as well as tips and tricks for you how can too. This week I chat with Doctor Cameron Cliff. He develops multi-platform experiences and uses storytelling to solve strategy problems. From immersive, interactive theatrical productions that explore themes like loneliness or the lives of refugees, to the experience journey of online educational modules.Cameron received his PhD researching how multi modal storytelling (then trans-media) can facilitate perceived co-creation, community, and ownership of content and thus create a more fully engaging media. We discuss how emotion and narrative can work together with interactive and immersive design to create an unforgettable user experience. Experience design can lead to strong emotional connections through the feeling of perceived co-creation, choice, and agency.I love talking to Cameron about how to engage audiences to ride an emotional roller-coaster, but of course it is imperative that it is done safely and with the consent of the viewer. We discuss at length what it means to invoke emotional responses and how they can be successfully implemented through experience design.I hope you enjoy this episode, remember to like and subscribe and catch you next time!==========LINKS===========Cam's Website: https://www.cliffhangercreative.com/Punchdrunk "The Lost Lending Library": https://www.punchdrunk.org.uk/project/the-lost-lending-library/Art of Game Design on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/Art-Game-Design-Lenses-Second-ebook/dp/B00OYUO4PYRobert Pratten "Transmedia Storytelling on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylj74jPHafEGetting Started in Transmedia Storytelling: https://talkingobjects.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/book-2-robert-pratten.pdfNo Mimes Media (AR puzzle adventure for The Dark Knight): https://www.nomimes.com/Feminist Approach to Game Design:Brie Code (Tend and Befriend Game Design): https://www.briecode.com/Feminist Game Design Journal: https://maifeminism.com/leveling-up-a-critical-feminist-pedagogy-for-game-design/My website: https://www.puzzledreality.comMy IG: @thepuzzledmakerPodcast Producer: https://thatsnotcanon.comInterested in starting your own podcast?

The way we typically consume stories is how they are told — starting from the beginning to the finale. But it's important to realize that not all stories are linear. Therefore, on this week's show, we're exploring a non-linear approach to telling stories using a variety of media channels to scale the same story. But the concern is if we tell the same story from a non-linear approach framed with different perspectives and media, will it be as effective? We'll get the answer straight from the man who pioneered transmedia storytelling, otherwise known as "Cine Experiences", Zeke Zelker. Zeke Zelker is an award-winning filmmaker who produced the first transmedia project, Pandemic, at the Sundance Film Festival. His current project, Billboard, goes beyond any movie experience as it is aired in a multitude of ways via different platforms. “Learn how to succeed by learning as you go.” —Zeke Zelker Billboard is first featured in social media, then segues to live events and eventually evolves into a web series. Finally, it turns into a feature film, then a game, while different brands get to ride along the myriad events and utilize these platforms to showcase their own brand stories. In this week’s episode, Zeke will share how his childhood experiences growing up in an amusement park shaped his unique perspective for transmedia storytelling. Through this approach, you can also co-create and tell a story creatively that’s completely different from how other brands are doing it. “Take your ego out and listen to your audience. Test things, break things, make things.” —Zeke Zelker As he relives the three major lessons he learned growing up in a Pennsylvania amusement park, Zeke shares his four phases of creation, which you can use as a guide to create your own brand stories through transmedia storytelling. Fictional experiments in emerging media like Twitter and Facebook are influencing traditional printed novels and stories in interesting ways, but another intriguing new narrative is also emerging: the rise of “artifacts” that, although they support a writer’s career, have their own intrinsic creative value. What are the benefits and dangers of a confusion between the private creativity and the public career elements of a writer’s life caused by new media and a proliferation of “open channels”? What protective measures must a writer take to preserve his or her “self” in this environment? In addition to the guerilla tactics implicit in storytelling through social media and other unconventional platforms, in what ways is a writer’s life now itself a story irrespective of intentional fictive storytelling? Examining these issues leads naturally to a discussion on the tension and cross-pollination between the private and public lives of writers in our transmedia age, including the strategies and tactics that best serve those who want to survive and flourish in this new environment. What are we losing in the emerging new paradigm, and what do we stand to gain?
