Life can get hard but having that positive mindset can make all the difference. What we tell ourselves in our head becomes who we are. What we say to our kids and what our kids say to themselves matters. This short mindful story talks about the caterpillar and how they do hard things like making a cocoon and turning into a butterfly. It is similar to the hard things that we and our children do every day. Some things might seem easy to us but these things can feel like a lot to our children and to others. Let us listen and open up the discussion on what seems challenging to us and our children. By talking about what hard things we accomplished will encourage us and our children to keep pushing ahead. Let us try and approach lives challenges with an "I can do it" mentality verse "I can't do it". Just one word can make the difference. Let us talk about gratitude and start to create our own gratitude list together. This story models gratitude and how it fills this deer up just like food does. This is an introduction to being grateful by talking about what makes one feel happy, what brings us excitement, and what makes us laugh. Gratitude can bring us back into the present and allow us to be happier individuals. We can start talking to our children about gratitude by modeling it, reading stories, listening to podcasts, creating appreciation rituals, and saying thank you often. It takes time for our littles to fully grasp what gratitude is but in time and with practice they can learn it. I hope you and your child enjoy this story together. After listening, check out these questions to answer with one another.Questions:1.) What makes you feel happy and warms your heart?2.) What is something you are grateful for?3.) Can we make a gratitude list together?4.) What affirmations can you say today? It is a great time to talk about how to get better when we are not feeling our best. The long winter time makes us want to rest, cuddle up, and take our Vitamin C. Staying healthy is what everyone wants but at times we might get sick. Normalizing this for ourselves and our kids is important when at times we can feel very fearful. Being sick stinks whether it is Covid, cold, allergies, belly aches, or just our body telling us to slow down. This story is about a sick dog and how his family helps him with remedies, rest, and in time gets better. After listening together here are some questions to further the discussion.Questions:1.) Have you ever been sick? What made you feel better when you were sick?2.) What can you do to help others when they are sick?3.) What affirmations can you say to make you feel better?4.) What are some things you can do to stay healthy?Sending all the health to you and your family during this time! I hope you enjoyed this episode. Elephants are similar to humans with their emotions. This story connects emotions to our facial expressions and physical body. Guiding both the child and adult to breathe, feel, and use helpful affirmations. We all need to process and feel our emotions to helps us build better social-emotional skills. When we become more emotionally and socially aware and skilled, we can more effectively navigate relationships, have better coping skills, calm down and problem solve when challenges arise. Let us open up the discussion of how we are feeling, where we feel it in our bodies, and how we can warmly welcome feelings and emotions. Take a moment after the episode or when you both have some time together and ask and answer these questions together.Questions:1.) How are you feeling today? Why?2.) Where in your body can you feel that emotion?3.) How do you think I am feeling? How can you tell how I am feeling?4.) What did you enjoy about this time together?I hope you enjoyed this episode! Welcome to A Calm Kid podcast! I am so glad you are here! This introduction episode discusses the voice behind the podcast, the reason why it was started, the mission, and how to help grow A Calm Kid movement. The Calm Kid Movement is about creating a community to help foster more mindful, meaningful, and present connections between the parent/caregiver and kid(s). If you are seeking a calmer kid, you as the adult need to be calm too. This podcast is a helpful tool to turn on when you need to connect together and both find inner calmness. First, find a comfy spot for you both to be together, put down the phone or tv distractions, and take 5 to 10 minutes to listen to the podcast. You and your child will regulate the body by breathing, listen to a short story using guided imagery, learn empathy and awareness from the characters, and nurture a growth mindset by using affirmations. Then afterwards you both can share what you enjoyed together and in each episode description there are questions for you to use too. I am so honored to open this safe space for you and your family to enjoy.
