What makes someone a good friend? We often think about showing up well for the people we love. But what if being a good friend also means learning how to receive care—and even extending that same compassion to ourselves? Dan and Rachael begin this conversation with a simple story about a bus ride that never happened. What unfolds is something bigger: Why is it so hard to ask for help? What keeps us pushing through pain instead of letting others care for us? Together, they explore what faithful friendship looks like: friends who know our stories, tell us the truth with kindness, and lovingly interrupt the patterns that keep us isolated. They also consider how we can begin to offer ourselves that same honesty, tenderness, and care. As you listen, consider: What kind of friend have you become—to the people you love, and to yourself? *This episode contains some explicit language. Listener discretion is advised. Jay sits down with Jake Shane for a candid conversation about fame, anxiety, OCD, dating, body image, and the pressure of living online. Together, they unpack what it takes to stay grounded when your life is constantly on display and why the hardest relationship to navigate is often the one you have with yourself. We all face moments when comparison, self-doubt, or the opinions of others begin to shape how we see ourselves. This conversation is an invitation to reconnect with who you are beneath the pressure, and to remember that your worth has never depended on perfection or applause. In the wake of the sad passing, Friday, July 10, 2026 of Thomas Williams, one of the most influential figures in Nashville's culinary community, I want to honour Thomas Williams and the extraordinary life of selflessness that he lived today. Thomas and I recorded this conversation some years back and I thought that it would be fitting to share it today. This show is about how Thomas rallied a group of talented and giving chefs and other selfless human beings to raise money for aid and recovery efforts after the devastating floods that hit Nashville in 2010. Founding Member Thomas Williams and the beginnings of the Nashville Food Project.

Send us Fan MailYou can spot the right move for your best friend in seconds, but when it's your own life, the same problem suddenly turns into a spiral. That disconnect is exactly what we're tackling here, with one core idea that's simple to say and surprisingly hard to live: be a good friend to yourself.I share why this has become the biggest piece of advice I've leaned on lately, especially after walking through a rough first half of the year and the emotional aftershocks of a long-term relationship ending. When you're hurt, it's easy to slip into anxious cycles, replay every detail, and take on responsibility that was never yours to carry. We talk about the moment therapy called that out clearly and the shift that followed: stop expecting yourself to do the work of two people, then punishing yourself when you burn out. From there, we make it practical. I lay out the “zoom out” questions that help me reset in real time: Would I tell my friend this? If my friend said this thought out loud, what would I say back? Those prompts can interrupt negative self talk, reduce social media comparison, and create a more grounded, resilient state of mind. We also dig into the boundary behind it all: don't set yourself on fire to keep others warm.If you want a cleaner mindset, stronger self-worth, and a healthier way to move through hard seasons, press play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a rating and review so we can help more people win.Thank you for tuning in! For some people, staying friends with an ex does not seem strange at all, but for others, it is a complete no-no. Anonymous wrote to Breakfast with Martin Bester about this exact predicament. Their partner is still good friends (emphasis on “good”) with their ex, and Anonymous wonders whether they should be worried.

Description:It's Pride Month, and we couldn't think of a better time to bring back one of our most beloved episodes. Sara Cunningham — founder of Free Mom Hugs — first joined Jen back in 2018, when she was a Christian mom from Oklahoma City who had just started showing up at Pride parades with a handmade sign and a button. A lot has happened since then. What began as one mom extending her arms to strangers has grown into a global movement. Free Mom Hugs now trains advocates, lobbies legislatures, and shows up year after year for LGBTQIA+ people whose own families walked away. Sara hasn't just built an organization — she's built a lifeline. In this conversation, Sara and Jen revisit the journey that started it all: how Sara moved from the church to the Pride parade without losing her faith, what it meant for her son Parker to come out into a family still finding its footing, and how the stories of people who had lost everything — their families, their churches, their sense of belonging — fell into her arms and changed the course of her life. They also talk about what it takes to turn personal pain into structural change, and why showing up — physically, politically, and relationally — for the LGBTQIA+ community matters more than ever right now. This one is worth every minute. Enjoy this encore conversation with our beloved friend, Sara Cunningham! Thought-provoking Quotes: “No one has searched for God more than the Gay Christian.” – Sara Cunningham “The first drag show that I ever went to, when I crossed the threshold, I really thought lightning might strike. But, I realized these are beautiful people raising money for homeless LGBTQ youth. And I was so moved by that. I had it totally wrong. I believed a lie that kept me from some of the most beautiful experiences I've had in my life.” – Sara Cunningham “I remember there was a time, at the beginning of that journey, I call from the church to the pride parade. It was like reality was setting in. The bubble that I was in, the evangelical conservative mainstream bubble that I was in where everyone looked like me and talked like me, had just shattered. And I wanted to take a banner and put it outside of my house on the front door, like, welcome to the real world. And suddenly it's like my eyes are truly open.” - Sara Cunningham Resources Mentioned in This Episode: LGBTQIA MeCourse - https://shop.jenhatmaker.com/products/parenting-lgbtqia-teens-tweens Mama Bears - https://www.realmamabears.org/ FTL Episode ft. Erica Smith is an award-winning sexuality educator, advocate, and author from rural Pennsylvania, where she grew up casually Christian, went to public school, learned sex ed from a gym teacher, and somehow became the most responsible teenage sexual health nerd with birth control, condoms, spermicide, and library books before having sex for the first time. In this episode we talk about purity culture, religious sexual shame, high-control groups, Christian nationalism, marital consent, "duty sex," the pressure placed on both women and men in evangelical purity teachings, and why healing from purity culture is not just about learning sex ed, but reconnecting to your body, your signals, your autonomy, and your right to desire without fear. In this episode of the SHE'S SO WELL Podcast, we dive into the beauty, complexity, and purpose of friendship. So many of us grow up longing for that one best friend or close-knit group where we feel fully known and deeply loved. Yet as we get older, friendships can become messy, complicated, and even painful. Despite living in a hyper-connected world, loneliness is more common than ever—especially among women and Gen Z. So what's missing? We're joined by a special guest known as the "friendship girl," who shares her heart for helping women build meaningful, healthy relationships rooted in Christ. Together, we explore how Jesus transforms not only our lives but also the way we connect with others. In this conversation, we unpack: The common struggles women face in friendships and why they can be hard to navigate A fresh, creative "garden" framework for understanding the stages of friendship Practical tips for making new friends and leaving a lasting first impression Warning signs of toxic friendships and how to handle them with wisdom Biblical principles and Scriptures that guide us in being a good friend We also talk honestly about loneliness and why so many people feel unseen—even while constantly connected online. One key takeaway? Shift the focus outward. When we take a genuine interest in others, we create space for deeper, more meaningful relationships. Inspired by timeless wisdom and the example of Jesus, this episode reminds us: To be interested rather than trying to be interesting To make others feel seen, valued, and known That our worth comes from God—not from others' approval From simple acts like remembering birthdays and making phone calls, to deeper mindset shifts rooted in faith, this episode offers practical encouragement for anyone longing for stronger friendships. If you've ever struggled to find your people or wondered if genuine friendship is still possible—this conversation is for you. In this message from our study through the life of David, Pastor Dave looks at the powerful covenant friendship between Jonathan and David in 1 Samuel 18. Jonathan had every reason to see David as a threat. As the crown prince, he was next in line for the throne, but instead of jealousy or competition, Jonathan chose humility, loyalty, and sacrificial love. This message explores the difference between transactional relationships and covenant relationships, showing us what it means to be a friend who protects, encourages, gives grace, and points others back to God. Ultimately, Jonathan's friendship with David points us to Jesus, who laid down His rights, humbled Himself, and gave His life for us.

This week, we wrapped up our five-episode series all about social life and friendship for neurodivergent homeschooled kiddos. Episode 311 digs into a topic many families experience but often don't have a name for: social hangovers—the aftermath of social time when kids (and adults!) crash, resist future invitations, or need days to recover. Key Takeaways Social hangovers are the nervous system's delayed response to social effort, especially common in neurodivergent kids who mask, self-monitor, and process a ton during interactions. Signs include: Irritability or emotional explosions Withdrawal/shutdown Physical complaints (headaches, stomachaches) Refusal of future plans Reframe the behavior: This isn't poor behavior—it's delayed processing, not avoidance. Build recovery plans BEFORE burnout happens! Include: Predictable ending times and visual cues Leaving while things are still going well Immediate decompression time (quiet, silence, snacks, audiobooks) Regulation through movement or sensory comfort No reflection or questions until after decompression Proactive Strategies Know your child's social energy window—how long they can handle interactions before going into yellow or red zones. Support with lighter academic loads or more autonomy the day after social events. Avoid stacking multiple social events together; buffer days matter! Teach kids to name their feelings and advocate for breaks without shame. This week, we're exploring an important and sometimes misunderstood topic: what to do when our neurodivergent kids are happier alone and genuinely prefer solitude over social interactions. Key Takeaways: Solitude Can Be Healthy: Recognize that some children genuinely enjoy being alone, and this can be restorative, not problematic. Honor their need for quiet time without assuming something is wrong. Distinguish Between Solitude and Isolation: Pay attention to signs. Healthy solitude is chosen, flexible, and doesn't carry shame, while isolation is often rigid, driven by fear, and paired with sadness or avoidance. Listen More Than You Talk: When your child expresses a preference for being alone, approach with curiosity rather than correction. Ask open-ended questions and avoid jumping into problem-solving. Don't Force Social Exposure: Avoid pushing frequent social situations or using solitude as a consequence. Let your child take breaks and control their level of social participation. Offer Invitations Without Pressure: Always keep low-demand connection options available. Respect "not now" and provide different types of social opportunities to let your child decide what feels safest. Honor Individual Differences: Never compare your child's social preferences to siblings or peers. Each child's needs and approach to friendships are unique and deserving of respect. Keep Connection Accessible: Even for children who prefer solitude, periodically check in. Offer short, interest-based activities, familiar settings, or intergenerational relationships to keep social muscles warm. Connection Isn't Linear or Urgent: Reassure your child (and yourself) that social growth happens at their own pace. Deep friendships may come later and are worth waiting for. Gentle Check-Ins: Periodically ask your child if they feel lonely or peaceful in their solitude, and discuss what helps them recharge and feel connected, without requiring action. Encourage Self-Discovery: Support your child's exploration of what types of friendships and connections work for them. Provide opportunities but let them drive the process. Cherish the connections your child finds, offer gentle support, and remember: The world would be boring if we all fit the same mold. Your child's unique wiring deserves celebration, not correction.
