Amplify is a one-on-one conversation about how our experiences impact our faith, hosted by Maggie Evans and produced by Hannah Muñoz. New episodes are released on Monday mornings.
This season is all about spiritual skills with Jim and Jan Sharp, and today we're talking about the armor of God. I feel like our initial reaction could be a flashback to VBS if you grew up near a Baptist church like I did, or there's some song that pops into your head about it. But while you're singing the little diddy, stay with me. The armor of God is powerful and purposeful, and this conversation was really helpful. Let's dive in. This season is all about spiritual skills with Jim and Jan Sharp, and today we're talking about hearing from the Holy Spirit. I especially love this topic because it's something that I think we can all grow in. We have so many messages coming at us and so many voices that influence what we think and believe, and I think honing this skill and practicing hearing the spirit is just essential. Let's dive in. This season is all about spiritual skills with Jim and Jan Sharp, and today we're talking about controlling our thoughts. It's really important as we listen to this to remember that the practice of controlling our thoughts is a daily effort that we're not always going to do well at, and if you're someone who has experienced trauma, then your brain has been wired differently from your experiences. So keep your experiences in perspective as you listen, and give yourself grace if this is an area that you struggle with like I do. Let's dive in. We're going to be doing something a little differently on Amplify from here on out — we're going seasonal! I'm really excited about this shift because it means we can take a little extra time to plan and create high quality shows for you guys. Our first season will be with Jim and Jan Sharp about developing some specific skills for spiritual maturity, which is something I think we can all benefit from. Before we dive into the skills, though, I wanted to give those who haven't heard their story a little background. So here's that episode where we first chatted, and we'll be back next week with the spiritual skills. Amplify is a product of TAB Media Group, hosted by Maggie Evans and produced by Hannah Muñoz. Today's podcast will be a little different than our typical show. This will be more of a listen and respond kind of interaction, but it's one that I think we all desperately need to hear. It's from the perspective of Daniel Fodorean, who is intensely involved in the Romanian effort to help the Ukranian refugees who are flooding into Romania. TAB Media Group's president and editor in chief Jennifer Rash sat down with Daniel in late March when he was in Alabama for another meeting. Daniel is the academic dean at the Baptist Theological Institute of Bucharest, and he's also on the Romanian-American Mission board of directors. His perspective is vital for us as American Christians to hear, and I'm so thankful that Jennifer had the foresight to record their conversation for us. Let's dive in. Today we've got an audio snippet from a recent presentation by Elijah Brown with Baptist World Alliance. Elijah was at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, last week speaking to a group of ministry leaders about the situation in Ukraine. Valentine's Day can be a hard day, so we at TAB Media Group wanted to bring a little lightness to it. Today, I've got my husband, Sam, our friend, Hilliary, and producer Hannah with me, and we're talking about past experiences and fun opinions. We intentionally opted for a lighter episode, so for all of y'all listening, just know that you are precious and loved by God. Today I've got Erik Reed with me. Erik is the lead pastor for The Journey Church in Lebanon, Tennessee, and he's also a father who lost his son in 2019 after years of health struggles. Erik's journey with grief has given him an understanding of the tension between lament and despair and it's changed him and his family in big ways. Last week, we got to hear about Caris Snider's journey with anxiety and depression, and we're continuing our conversation today. As a mom of two girls, Caris is passionate about teaching kids and teenagers about anxiety and how to cope with it in healthy ways. It's something that's vitally important, and something I wish I had understood when I was that age. To learn more about Caris and to check out her books, visit her website here. Today I've got Caris Snider with me. Caris and I have had similar journeys with anxiety and depression, and it was truly therapeutic to hear someone else's story like this. What I love about Caris is how well she articulates what anxiety can feel like, and I just think everyone should hear her story. Today I've got Jim and Jan Sharp with me. These two are the cutest married couple who might be two of my new favorite people. The pair of them just have the kind of spirit and energy that you're drawn toward, and in listening to them share about their love for the Lord and how His Spirit moves within us — it's utterly captivating. Hi friends! So we had big plans and great guests lined up to really kick off the new year, but omicron had other ideas so, even though we took a break last week, this week is pretty similar! But I did want to share something with you all, in case anyone is in the same spot as I am, in already feeling weary by the new year (and, to be honest, the past couple of years). I wanted to share a prayer from the The Valley of Vision devotional that encouraged me. The Valley of Vision is a book of puritan prayers, written in old English, and every time I read one, I feel the Spirit move through the words on the page. This specific prayer I'm reading is called "Love Rest in God." Amplify is a product of TAB Media Group, hosted by Maggie Evans and produced by Hannah Muñoz.

Today I've got Sarah Law with me. You've actually heard from Sarah in a previous show, and she's such a delight that I wanted to talk with her again. Sarah's got three kids under 10 and has a really gracious perspective on how to balance time and traditions during this season, and we end with a conversation on New Year's resolutions that I found really convicting. Let's dive in. Listen to Sarah's podcast “Talking tornadoes with Sarah Law”. Amplify is a product of TAB Media Group, hosted by Maggie Evans and produced by Hannah Muñoz. Today is an extra fun episode for a few reasons. First, it's the week before Christmas, which just feels surreal, and second, we have two former guests of the show here to share their Christmas hot takes. We've got my husband, Sam, and our friend Aaron Jaillet, who have both shared about grief in different ways with us on the podcast, so we thought it would be a nice change to hear their thoughts on a lighter topic. This week I have my coworker, Melanie McKinney, with me. She is one of the most Christmas cheer-y individuals that I know. To close out the year and as we get closer to Christmas, I thought it would be good to have some fun conversations about people and their Christmas memories and favorite things, just something a little lighter than what we typically do. Hey friends! Maggie is feeling under the weather, so we don't have a new episode for you this week, but we have included one of our favorite previous episodes featuring Maggie's husband, Sam. Hope you all enjoy it and Maggie will be back next week! Today I've got a special guest with me — my husband, Sam. Y'all have heard me mention him nearly every episode, so I thought it just made sense to finally have him as a guest on the show. Sam is a delightful human who experienced a deep loss very early in life. And that loss has impacted how he views God and relationships in really foundational ways, which is something that consistently surprises him. Let's dive in. This is the third in a series on service. If you're just jumping in, I'd encourage you to hop back to the first episode of the series and start from there. Today I've got Clara Huff with me. Clara is a person that was recommended to me by a mutual friend, and I'm so thankful I got to talk with her. She is someone whose whole life has been in service to the Lord, and I loved hearing how she spoke with such confidence about what God has called her to. Let's dive in. This is the second in a series on service. There's a lot to serving our Lord and those around us, and I think there's also a lot of misconceptions surrounding it. And because it's such a big part of our Christian walk, I wanted to dig into it a little more. Today I've got Kelly Redding with me. Kelly is someone who loves to dig into theological texts, which is so interesting to me because that is for sure not my natural leaning. And because of her passion for the Word, I wanted to bring her on today to talk through the theology of service and help us see where we might have fundamental misunderstandings about it. This is the first in a series on service. There's a lot to serving our Lord and those around us, and I think there's also a lot of misconceptions surrounding it. And because it's such a big part of our Christian walk, I wanted to dig into it a little more. First up, I've got the person who taught me how to serve — my dad, Dave Walsh. My dad is the person who has really demonstrated to me what service looks like, and as a pastor he's got an extra dose of perspective and experience on the topic. You're going to hear a lot of jokes in this episode, so just go ahead and prepare yourself for a glimpse into my childhood. Dave is the pastor of Ariton Baptist Church in south Alabama. He also compiles the Pastor Connections email for TAB Media Group, which is a monthly newsletter for pastors by pastors. This week I've got Trennis and Pam Henderson with me. I got to meet Trennis and Pam through our mutual work with TAB Media Group, and they have a really incredible perspective on life that I've gotten to see more in the past few months. This pair travels around the Southeast as regional correspondents for The Baptist Paper, which is a completely new national publication, and seeing them navigate these roles and unique circumstances has been just really inspiring. Today I've got Don Arnold with me. My husband and I met Don down in south Louisiana in September, after Hurricane Ida ripped through the area and caused a lot of devastation. Don was serving with Southern Baptist Disaster Relief, which is a volunteer organization that equips Christ followers to help survivors put their lives back together after disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods strike. Don and his team had such a passion for what they were doing to help a family whose home had been flooded, that I wanted to have him on the podcast so others could hear from him. Also, I have a cold at the time of this recording, so I'll apologize in advance for any sniffles you hear. Let's dive in. This is the third in a series on singleness and all the complexities that it entails. I think it's so important to talk about the experience of singleness and how it impacts our faith and how it's lived out within our churches. There's just so much to the experience of singleness, and when I look at the world around me, I see a lot of people who are single. My prayer is that this series increases our understanding of our brothers and sisters in Christ and challenges any inherent misunderstandings we have about singleness and God. Today I've got Jesse Hoyer with me. Jesse is 61, and she's never been married, so I especially wanted to get her perspective on singleness and how it's impacted her faith through the years. Demetrius has served in a variety of ministry roles for the past 20 years, and in that time he's really dug into what intimacy with the Lord looks like as a single man, and even more broadly as single people, which we all are at different points in our lives. Today I've got my friend, Grace Thornton, with me. Grace was my first podcast guest when we started Amplify, and she graciously agreed to come back. Grace is the first person I met who really made me question a lot of inherent ideas I had about what the faithfulness of God looked like, which 23-year-old me definitely assumed included a house, husband and kids. Today I've got Carole Inman with me. Carole is a retired counselor who's worked with both high school and college students throughout her career. Our conversation started with talking about college students, but it took a turn as we talked about just how we're all broken people who are just trying to figure life out. I walked away from this conversation convicted and simultaneously encouraged. I think this conversation is for everyone, and I'm so thankful for Carole's wisdom and perspective. Let's dive in. Today I've got Rory Groves with me. Rory is a computer programmer who knew that the very nature of a technology industry was that change and innovation was constant. But when he started having kids, he found that he wanted to create something more lasting and have a different kind of lifestyle that would let him work with his family more as his kids were growing up. So he did some researching that resulted in a big shift. Let's dive in. Today I've got Robert Morgan with me. Robert is a speaker, author and teaching pastor at a Nashville church who has a passion for sharing truths about the Lord with everyone he comes in contact with. Today I've got Linda Winn with me. Linda is a few life stages ahead of me, and she has a lot of wisdom to share when it comes to the inevitable time when the roles will be reversed and we'll need to care for our aging parents. We've all got parents, and though we all have different family dynamics and resources, most of us will deal with this at some point. So let's dive in. Today I've got a new friend with me. She is a sweet soul who has a love for the Word of God that I really admire. This is the fourth in a series on the experiences of pastors' wives. We all have a pastor or two in our church, and we tend to have very clear job descriptions and understandings of what a pastor's role should be or should look like. But oftentimes, we don't have that same clarity for the wife of our pastors. And while it varies from church to church, I was curious about the experiences and perspectives of pastors wives on the whole. This week we hear from Jacki C King, who knew she had a call to ministry when she was in college but was determined not to marry a pastor. Jacki and her husband, Josh, have three kids on the verge of the teen years. Jacki serves as women's minister and Josh serves as lead pastor at 2nd Baptist Church in Conway, Arkansas. Camellia Finkley grew up in church, and when she got married, she had so much hope for what her future would look like. But her newlywed hope disappeared as her husband became verbally, emotionally, mentally and physically abusive. Camellia's is a story that's hard to hear, but important to hear. Today I've got Kristen Padilla with me. Kristen and I have very similar upbringings as daughters of Southern Baptist preachers and everything that goes along with it. So we've both seen ministry up close as spectators, and as adults we're trying to serve the Lord as faithfully as we can. For Kristen, that meant going to seminary, which brought up a whole slew of questions and struggles as a woman with a calling from the Lord. And now, as the director of the Women in Ministry Initiative at Samford University's Beeson Divinity School, she's seen a lot of situations similar to her own. Kristen is also the manager of marketing and communication at Beeson and the author of “Now That I'm Called: A Guide for Women Discerning a Call to Ministry” (find it here). She co-hosts the Beeson Divinity Podcast (listen here), which features lectures and interviews with Beeson faculty and spiritual leaders. Today I've got Haley Joe Febrey with me. Since it's graduation season, I wanted to talk with someone who's going through all the young professional transitions. Haley Joe is a Samford University grad who finished her degree in May 2020 – just in time for the world to shut down. But she's been able to see the Lord move in all of the unexpected circumstances, and I just really want some of us who are further down the path to remember how we felt when we were in her shoes and remember what God did when we were trying to figure it all out. So let's dive in. Amplify is a product of TAB Media, hosted by Maggie Evans and produced by Hannah Muñoz.
Today I've got Brittany Logan with me. Brittany is a precious human who always knew that she wanted to be a mom when she grew up. And so when she met her husband, Chris, they made a plan, set a timeline and were excited about becoming parents. But together, they struggled with infertility for years. She describes it as a valley that they were in for about 8 years. Let's dive in. Amplify is a product of TAB Media, hosted by Maggie Evans and produced by Hannah Muñoz.
Today I've got Daniel Gilliland with me. Daniel is a mid-20s seminary graduate who feels a calling from the Lord to preach the Word, teach others about God and pastor believers through their daily walk. But he hasn't gotten “the job” -- the position at a church or in a ministry that would traditionally look like the fulfillment of a call. And that's a hard place to be. Let's dive in.
