On today's episode of Big Truth, I sit down with fellow Relatives member Zeboria Peters (aka Johnny Gr4ves) and his longtime friend Cassius Morris to discuss the changing tides of the Arts & Media industries. Ever since the emergence of social media as the primary forum for information and entertainment to spread, there has been an unprecedented change in not only the way that people interface with the media, but how and why people create. As a man who's been interviewing some of the most exciting names in the music industry for over 10 years (since he was 12), Cassius Morris has a unique perspective on what people choose to pay attention to and why, as well as some fantastic advice on the importance on a varied and diverse approach to one's career. Hope you're all having a restful weekend! It's been a BIG couple of weeks over here in Canada, as demonstrations of Indigenous Solidarity have been happening and shutting down infrastructure to show support for the people who are being targeted by the RCMP in Wet’suwet’en. As the Canadian Government continues to refuse to acknowledge the Indigenous rights of land ownership, and is attempting to build a pipeline with Coastal GasLink on unceded territory, a conversation is coming into focus about the ongoing harm of Colonialism and the Negative effects of Capitalism on both the environment and the lives of Indigenous Peoples, who want nothing more than peaceful coexistence between all peoples and the Mother Earth. I'm joined today by Dakota Bear, a Vancouver-Based hip-hop artist and important leader in the Indigenous Rights conversation in Vancouver. He has played an integral part in the recent demonstrations, and is here today to discuss the intricacy and nuance of a situation that is not only an extremely important modern political moment, but something that dates back FAR longer than the Canadian Government would like you to think. Good morning friends! I'm sure by now you've probably noticed the new artwork for the show! We're gonna be taking things in a brand new direction going forward, and I felt like the look of the show needed to change along with the purpose. No longer will I be exclusively just loosely shooting-the-shit with my friends on the mic. I think it's about time that I start diving into using this show to create nuanced dialogue and respectful debate about current events and topics that I believe really matter. To start it off, here is the first ever solo monologue episode. I'll dive into a bit of the reasoning behind the show revamp, as well as my thoughts on the idea of legacy, and a line by line reaction to Joaquin Phoenix's fantastic speech at the Oscars on Sunday. As always, feel free to reach out at @autumn._.woods on instagram if you wanna say hey, have any questions or thoughts, or want to pitch an idea for an episode topic/debate! Today marks a bit of a switch in the direction of Big Truth. Instead of the usual one-on-one interview style of the show previously, we're going to start to focus more on picking a larger topic, and bringing in the right guests to speak on the nuisances of the idea. For this episode, we're discussing how Social Media both helps and hinders the lives of artists, and how having to promote yourself as a "brand" effects your self image. My guests are my dear friend Connor Kryger, a model who's talent for intimate and unique portrait-work has found him working for brands such as "Off-white", and my new friend Jack Perkins, who's unique eye for photography has brought him on tour with some of the biggest names in hip-hop. Goodday Beautiful People! On today's episode I have Fred Thorsen on the podcast to talk about the magnificent, Vancouver-based film program that he runs alongside his sister Kat: Intersections Media. Intersections aims to help young people who are struggling to maintain work in the media industries by supplying them with the knowledge and foundations for success, all while learning the basics of film-making and paying the students for their time. I took Intersections a few months ago, and through their fantastic work I landed a job that I am grateful for every single day, and have endlessly more confidence in my career as an artist.
