Send us a textIn this wildly entertaining episode of Nobody's Talking, the usual male-dominated atmosphere gets shaken up when two women – Jess and Queen – join the conversation, creating what the hosts jokingly call an "ebony and ivory" mix. The chemistry is immediate as this diverse group dives into subjects ranging from cannabis culture to the future of AI, all with the podcast's signature unfiltered approach. The cannabis discussion proves particularly enlightening as Queen shares her expertise in creating various THC products, from Sweet Potato Pie to tinctures. Her knowledge sparks stories from the hosts about edible experiences gone wrong, highlighting the universal warning that everyone ignores: "just eat half." These personal anecdotes lead to deeper conversations about the differences between today's cannabis products and "the reefer" of decades past. When the conversation shifts to entertainment, passionate debates emerge about Jordan Peele's films, with the group analyzing everything from "Get Out" to his newest release "Him." Adam Sandler movies become another hot topic, with "That's My Boy" receiving particularly high praise. The group's shared enthusiasm for "Game of Thrones" and "Ozark" reveals how these shows have become cultural touchpoints that bridge different backgrounds and experiences.Technology mishaps provide some of the episode's biggest laughs, particularly the story of someone airdropping inappropriate photos to an entire airplane. This leads to fascinating speculation about AI and robots, with Queen confessing she finds her AI assistant "better than my therapist." The group's musings about how close we are to living like "The Jetsons" shows their shared curiosity about the future.Regional differences add another layer to the conversation as Queen, who recently relocated from the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area to Arizona, shares perspectives on everything from driving patterns to haunted attractions. Her stories about converted prison haunted houses from the East Coast have the Arizona crew reconsidering their local thrill-seeking options.Ready for more unfiltered conversations?  Today on Consuming the Craft, I welcomed Chris Reedy, Senior Director of Food, Beverage, and Natural Products Industry Training at the Natural Products Laboratory and Test Kitchen of NC BioNetwork. We dove deep into the rapidly evolving food safety landscape, particularly focusing on the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) 204 and its sweeping impact on food and beverage traceability. Our conversation ranged from the intricate logistics of tracking every ingredient in a sandwich to the challenges faced by beverage producers, natural product makers, and those entering the world of CBD and THC-infused products. We didn't shy away from discussing the regulatory Wild West these days, the importance of good manufacturing practices, and what's coming down the pike for craft producers as federal scrutiny ramps up. Chris Reedy brings decades of expertise in the intersection of food, beverage, natural products, and industry training. As the mind behind NC BioNetwork's laboratory and test kitchen, he has helped countless producers, from breweries to natural supplement startups, navigate regulations, quality control, and product development. His insights stem from both a scientific and a practical industry perspective, ensuring that companies strike a balance between innovation and safety and compliance. Chris is a passionate advocate for proactive quality management and is intimately familiar with both the promise and pitfalls of rapidly expanding product categories, such as CBD, THC, and functional foods. “I hope these companies that are making these products are going to start acting  like food and beverage companies.” ~Chris Reedy Today on Consuming the Craft: ·     FSMA 204 requirements will soon compel all food supply chain businesses to maintain thorough traceability records for every ingredient, ingredient source, and lot, greatly improving speed and accuracy in foodborne illness recalls.·     Transportation and logistics—especially temperature and sanitation in refrigerated trucking, remain a huge compliance challenge and could become a pain point as regulations tighten.·     Even small producers, like sandwich makers and brewers, must adopt lot coding and traceability, associating each output with precise ingredient origins.·     THC and CBD-infused foods, beverages, and supplements are currently in regulatory limbo, with the FDA focusing initial enforcement mainly on products that pose a risk to children or appear as copycats of popular snacks.·     Many CBD and THC product makers fail basic quality assurance: lack of testing, unclear dosing on packaging, and no third-party certification, all of which can cause dangerous dosing errors.·     Field-to-shelf testing for compounds like THC in hemp products requires a DEA-registered lab, making comprehensive quality assurance both expensive and complex for startups.·     State and federal agencies lack the manpower to inspect and enforce these new standards fully, so proactive internal quality systems and involving health officials early are recommended.·     Training, workforce development, and support from entities like NC BioNetwork can help companies establish robust quality management systems and prepare for both current and coming inspections. Contact Chris Reedy: NC BioNetwork – https://ncbionetwork.org/ Resources Mentioned: NC BioNetwork Laboratory & Industry Training: Food, beverage, and natural products services, COA assistance, and product testing information.FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) 204 – details on new federal traceability requirements.Multi-parameter Beer Testing (Anton Paar) – available free for every NC brewery, up to six samples per month. The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) – framework for supplement industry regulation. For more information about industry training, regulatory readiness, and laboratory services, reach out to Chris and the team at NC BioNetwork. ”Magic mushroom” edibles sold at smoke shops and other retailers might be missing psilocybin but can contain undisclosed ingredients, according to a joint study published Thursday.    Oregon State University researchers collaborated on the analysis with Rose City Laboratories, a state-certified testing lab in Portland, and the manufacturer Shimadzu Scientific Instruments.   The edibles, including gummies and chocolates, contained caffeine and synthetic psychedelics. Richard van Breemen worked on the research and is a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at OSU.  “Syndelics represent a rapidly growing area of drug design, where medicinal chemists create novel compounds inspired by known psychedelic agents like psilocybin and LSD,” van Breemen said in a press release. He joins us with details of the study.

Magic in the kitchen and a whole new approach to edibles.Adam Vandermay, Executive Chef and co-founder of Your Canna Chef, takes us behind the scenes of his cannabis culinary journey, revealing how his relationship with the plant evolved from casual use to intentional consumption. "I went from just getting high to using the plant with intent," Adam shares, highlighting a maturity many cannabis enthusiasts develop over time. The conversation dives deep into the art of cannabis cuisine, with Adam emphasizing precision over guesswork. His most valuable tip? Stop cooking with cannabis-infused oils as your base. Instead, use infusions as finishing elements—in sauces, glazes, and condiments—where you can control dosage with exactness. This approach eliminates the dreaded "mystery edible" problem where consumers don't know how potent their food will be. Beyond cooking techniques, Adam shares the remarkable story of how his culinary skills literally saved his life after hitting rock bottom. Following a difficult divorce, he traveled to Nicaragua with just $600 and rebuilt his life through cooking, eventually establishing a thriving private chef business. Today, that resilience and creativity power Your Canna Chef, where Adam hosts cooking classes and private dining experiences that showcase cannabis as a sophisticated culinary ingredient rather than just a way to get high.Ready to elevate your cannabis kitchen skills? Thomas Winstanley, EVP, General Manager of Edibles.com discussed the severe implications of Texas Senate Bill 3, which proposes a ban on hemp-derived THC products. He highlighted the bill's flawed reasoning, arguing that it disregards consumer demand for safe THC access and would lead to the closure of thousands of businesses and job losses for tens of thousands of workers. Winstanley criticized the political motivations behind the bill, suggesting they are not rooted in genuine health concerns and would instead foster an unregulated illicit market. He emphasized that an outright ban fails to address underlying issues in the hemp industry, and Texas is missing an opportunity to establish a sensible regulatory framework.Winstanley further pointed out the double standards in Texas regulations, contrasting the proposed hemp ban with the state's approach to alcohol, tobacco, and firearms, none of which face similar bans despite documented harms. He noted the strong opposition to SB3, particularly from veterans who rely on hemp products for pain management and fear a return to opioid dependence. Winstanley expressed disappointment that legislative attempts to regulate the industry with THC caps and licensing were ultimately overridden by the ban proposal.Regarding edibles.com, Winstanley explained that the company aims to provide safe access to THC products through a curated marketplace, addressing inconsistencies in quality and testing within the hemp industry. The strategic launch in Texas is a proof of concept for future expansion into states like Florida and Georgia, with plans for nationwide shipping and a flagship retail store in Atlanta. The company's goal is to build consumer trust and legitimacy by connecting them with reputable brands and offering a responsible alternative to unregulated sales. He outlined a vision for effective regulation, including licensing, excise taxes for enforcement, and clear frameworks for product types and dosing, citing Georgia as a successful example of regulated hemp.Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

This week on Parenting is a Joke, Ophira Eisenberg welcomes comedian Mike Cannon for a Father's Day–timed conversation packed with raw insight, humor, and real talk about parenting sensitive kids while holding onto your sanity and creative drive. Mike opens up about life with a kindergartner and a seven-month-old, reflecting on how jujitsu helped his son build emotional resilience—and how parenting has forced him to confront his own childhood trauma, OCD, and anger. The two comedians swap stories about navigating vulnerability, shifting identities post-kids, and finding joy (and a little stability) in edibles. Mike also unpacks the internal war he feels before going on stage and how childhood fears shape his on-stage energy. They cover everything from microdosing trends among parents to the strange poetry of seeing your father's face in your baby's crying eyes. He shares how a Don't Tell Comedy set pushed him to reshape his material for younger audiences, while still anchoring it in authentic parenting truths. Plus, he and Ophira bond over their shared frustration with schools punishing behavior by taking away recess—arguably the one thing kids need most.

Since Michigan legalized marijuana more than five years ago, cannabis has become pretty visible in everyday life. Dispensaries are everywhere, you can get marijuana in the form of candy and baked goods, and the industry is generating billions of dollars every year. But there’s also growing concern about how that normalization is affecting kids. A record number of Michigan kids were hospitalized last year for cannabis, according to the state’s poison control center. In the last five years, they received about 1,500 reports of kids under the age of six being exposed to or ingesting CBD, THC, or other cannabis products. We’re talking with Michigan Public reporters Kate Wells and Adam Yahya Rayes. They’ve been digging into what the numbers tell us, talking to parents, doctors, and people in the cannabis industry about why this is happening.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
